As Jesus was walking beside the Sea

of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will Luke let down the nets.” 5:1-11 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signalled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they They pulled their had taken, and so were James and John, the sons boats up on shore, of Zebedee, Simon’s left everything and partners. If the ministry that brought condemnation was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness! For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. And if what was transitory came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts! Noah filled the ark with birds and animals of every kind. Soon there would be rain, and the rain would become a flood that would wash the whole earth clean again. When Noah, his family and all the animals were safe inside the ark, the rain began to fall. It rained and it rained and it rained. The rivers burst their banks and the seas flooded the land. But Noah’s ark floated on the water. When the rain stopped and dry land at last appeared again, God told Noah and the animals they could leave the ark. A bright rainbow filled the sky. Noah thanked God for keeping them safe. And God promised there would never be another flood like it.

A real friend

Jesus told this story so people knew how they could make God happy. ‘There was once a man who was walking from Jerusalem to Jericho. He was attacked by robbers, who left him lying hurt by the side of the road. ‘A priest came along. He saw the injured man, but ignored him. He walked past on the other side. ‘A Levite followed the priest. He stopped and looked at the injured man, but walked on without helping him.

As time passed, God saw that people hurt each other. They were selfish and greedy. They were only happy if they took what they wanted from others. One man was different. Noah tried to be kind and looked after God’s world. God told Noah to build an ark – a huge boat – big enough to carry two each of all the creatures that lived on the earth. And Noah did. People laughed at him but Noah collected together lots of food – and then, two by two, birds and animals of every kind came to him.

When Noah, his family and all the animals were safe inside the ark, it began to rain. Slowly, steadily, hour after hour, day after day, week after week, it rained. It rained until flood waters covered the earth and all the people who were cruel and greedy and had hurt each other were washed away. Only Noah’s ark floated above it all. After forty day and forty nights, the rain stopped. The clouds drifted away and the sun shone. Slowly, steadily, hour after hour, day after day, week after week, the waters went down and the land dried out.

Joseph told his brothers about the dreams he had - and somehow, in his dreams, he was always the best brother, the important brother, the one others respected above them all. It was time to do something about Joseph. His brothers plotted to make sure he couldn’t be his father’s favourite any more. things. They must be good and kind to other people.’ Jonah knew all about the people of Nineveh. He

knew enough to want to board a ship sailing in the opposite direction. Jonah was running away. After a while, a storm blew up. Great watery waves splashed on to the deck as the ship was tossed about on the wild sea. But Jonah was sleeping below deck. ‘Wake up, Jonah!’ said the frightened sailors. ‘Pray that God will save us!’ But Jonah knew that he couldn’t. It was God he was running away from. ‘Throw me into the sea!’ Jonah shouted above the wind. ‘Then you will be safe. This is all my fault.’ So the sailors threw Jonah over the side into the splashy waves. Down, down, he fell until the water was all around him. Then Jonah called out to God to save him. God answered Jonah. A very big fish swallowed Jonah whole and saved him from the sea. here was noise and bustle everywhere when Mary and Joseph

arrived in Bethlehem. They were not the only visitors. There were soldiers and families and animals, and more people looking for somewhere to stay than there were places to put them. Joseph found a place where they could shelter for the night. They shared it with the animals that were kept there, but Mary knew she could wait no longer. Not long afterwards, the cries of a tiny new baby mixed with the sounds of night-time in Bethlehem. It was Mary’s baby son. She remembered what the angel Gabriel had said. ‘Jesus,’ she whispered. ‘Your name is Jesus.’

Mary wrapped up her baby warmly and made a bed for him in the manger, filled with hay.

n the beginning there was nothing. It was dark and empty and shapeless. ‘Let there be light!’ God said. As soon as he had said the words, light came into existence. God saw that the light was good. God divided the light, so that there was day and there was night. God made the sky and separated it from the waters below. God brought the waters together into seas and created dry land. ‘Let the land produce plants and trees full of seeds and fruits,’ God said. Then all varieties of green and leafy vegetation filled the land, from tall redwood trees to trees bearing olives and oranges, acorns and chestnuts. God saw that all he had

made was good. ‘Let there be lights in the sky for the night and the day,’ God said. ‘Let them mark times and seasons, days, months and years.’ So the golden sun became the light that shone in the day and the silvery moon the light that beamed in the night sky. God also filled the darkness with stars, and saw that all he had made was good. ‘Let the waters be filled with living creatures and the skies with every kind of winged bird. Let them multiply and increase in number.’ Then every kind of fish and sea creature swam and splashed in the seas and the air above became filled with colour and shape and sound. There were dolphins and sea horses, eagles, owls, robins and wrens, buzzing bees and beautiful butterflies. ‘Let there be all sorts of creatures to move on the land,’ God said. So there were sheep and goats, elephants and giraffe, lions, tigers and graceful gazelles. God looked at everything that he had made and saw that it was good. Then God made man and woman. He put them in charge of his creation, to care for it and cultivate it for food. God loved the people he had made and he saw that everything he had made was very good. Then God rested.

As they went into the temple courts, they met there a man called Simeon. Simeon had been waiting for the day when God would send his Messiah – the chosen one who would save his people. He believed that God had promised him that he would see this Saviour before he died. When Simeon saw Mary and Joseph and the baby boy in their arms, he knew that the special day had arrived. He took Jesus from them and praised God. ‘Lord, you can let me now die in peace, because I have seen with my own eyes the Saviour you have promised your people. This child will reveal your truth to all people on earth and be everything the Jewish nation have been waiting for.’ Mary and Joseph listened in some surprise to his words but before they had taken it all in, an elderly woman approached them. Anna was a prophetess who had lived in the temple, praying and worshipping God for most of her long life. She also knew that Jesus was God’s chosen one. And she thanked God for him. They ran down the hillside, determined to find the baby who had been born that night. They found the place where Mary and Joseph were staying, and knew that this baby, lying in the manger, was the baby the angels had spoken of. They went from there to tell everyone what they had seen and heard so that no one could be in any doubt about who the baby was. They set out on a journey, following the star, because they thought it heralded the birth of a new king, and they wanted to worship him. When they reached Jerusalem, they stopped at King Herod’s palace. ‘Where is the child born to be king of the Jewish people?’ they asked. ‘We have come to pay our respects, to welcome and worship him.’ Herod was disturbed by their arrival. What king could there be apart from him? Quickly, Herod consulted the chief priests and teachers of the law. They told him what they knew from the ancient prophecies: the king would be born in Bethlehem. Herod then talked to his eastern visitors and tried to find out exactly when they had first seen the star. This way he could know how old the baby might be. Then he sent them to Bethlehem. ‘If you find the king,’ he said, craftily, ‘let me know. I would like to be able to worship him as well.’

When Joseph was grown up, he met a young woman named Mary. He offered her his hands, rough and calloused from good, honest work. They were also strong gentle hands. He wanted to use them to care for Mary. Her family was pleased, and Joseph and Mary planned the day when they could be married.

On another starry night, Joseph watched in wonder as camels stopped outside the door of a little house in Bethlehem. Wise men entered, bringing gifts for Jesus, whom they called a baby king. Joseph saw the men worship the child he helped care for. When they left, he held in his hands the gifts they had left – gold, frankincense and myrrh – and put them safely away. That night God sent his angel to Joseph in another dream. ‘Take the child and his mother to Egypt for Herod means to kill him! Stay there until I tell you it is safe to return.’

Mary’s baby boy

A

long time ago, the Roman emperor, Augustus, called for a census. He sent everyone back to the place where their family came from to be counted. Among the people who went to Bethlehem, in a tiny corner of the empire, were Mary and Joseph. Mary was expecting a baby, and while she was in Bethlehem, Mary’s baby son was born. They called him Jesus. Mary wrapped him in strips of cloth and made a bed for him among the soft hay in a manger. That night there were shepherds out in the fields, looking after their sheep. Angels appeared to them, announcing the birth of a Saviour who would bring peace to the world. The shepherds found the baby wrapped in

nly the Roman governor could agree to have Jesus punished by death. But Pontius Pilate could find no fault with Jesus. One person could be released on the day of the Passover. So Pilate asked the crowd, ‘Shall I set free the murderer Barabbas? Or this man, Jesus?’ The priests had already told the crowd what to say. ‘Barabbas!’ shouted the loudest voices. ‘We want Barabbas!’ ‘And what should I do with Jesus?’ Pilate asked again. ‘Crucify him!’ they shouted. The soldiers took Jesus away with a crown of thorns on his head and wearing a purple cloak. They made fun of him, before taking him to his death.

What a wonderful world! When God made the world he filled it with all sorts of creatures. There were lions and tigers and bears. There were tall creatures and stripy creatures. Some had swishy tails, some had tickly whiskers. Some made growly noises, some sang chirpy songs and some made no sound at all. Genesis 1

The very scary storm Jesus had fallen asleep in the boat. It had been a long day. But suddenly the wind blew – whhhoooo and the waves got higher – swish, swish and Jesus’ friends began to be afraid. ‘Help us, Jesus or we will drown!’ Jesus woke up. Jesus stood up. Jesus told the wind to be still. And the wind was still, the waves were calm, and Jesus’ friends were amazed. Luke 8:22-25

The Bad Choice Have you ever wanted to do the right thing but done the wrong thing instead? Then you know how Adam and Eve felt when they made the first bad choice. The fruit from the ‘Tree of Life’ tasted lovely and lush. They never ate from ‘The Tree of Knowing Good and Bad.’ ‘Don’t even touch it,’ God warned, ‘or everything will be spoiled.’ One day the sneaky serpent slipped up to Eve. ‘Did God really say not to eat the fruits in the garden?’ ‘No,’ said Eve, ‘just this fruit – or we will die!’ ‘Nonsense,’ said the serpent. ‘God knows that you’ll know what he knows.’ ‘I wonder,’ thought Eve. The wondering was delightful. The fruit looked delicious. She ate some and gave some to Adam. Adam ate some too. Suddenly, they knew what it was to do bad things and they felt bad. They made a bad choice. We all do.

Have you ever wished that you said ‘yes’ the first time you were asked to do something? Then you know how Jonah felt when he was swallowed by a big fish.

God said, ‘Go!’ but Jonah said, ‘No!’ He was afraid and jumped on a ship for far away. While Jonah slept, a storm stirred. Thunder crashed. Lightning flashed. The sailors were scared. ‘We’re going to sink,’ they screamed. The captain shook Jonah. ‘Wake up! Do something! Pray!’

Jonah and the Big Fish Jonah 1:1-17, 2:10

‘Jonah, go to Nineveh,’ God said. ‘Tell them I see the bad things they are doing. I want them to change.’

‘It’s my fault,’ said Jonah. ‘I’m running away from God. Throw me into the sea and you will be safe.’ So they did. The storm stopped. The sailors were saved. So was Jonah. Glub, gulp, swish, swish. Jonah was swallowed by a great big fish! He had time to think. He had time to thank God and pray. ‘I’m truly sorry for running away,’ he told God. ‘I will keep my promise to do whatever you ask.’ The big fish burped. Jonah bounced on to a beach. Jonah got a second chance. It’s best to say yes the first time.

Jesus Rides a Donkey

People were smiling and cheering. Some were waving palm branches in the air. Others were laying cloaks under the donkey’s feet. What was happening? Who was this man, riding into Jerusalem on a donkey? ‘It’s Jesus!’ someone in the crowd shouted above the noise. ‘He’s the teacher from Galilee everyone is talking about. They say no one has ever talked about God the way he does.’ ‘Did you see him heal the blind man?’ someone else asked. ‘I heard about a miracle with some bread and a couple of little fish – they say thousands of people shared a boy’s lunch!’ ‘What about the lepers, then? Ten of them healed and went back to live with their families, I heard.’ ‘So – he must have come for the Passover. Look! Here he is! Praise Jesus! Praise Jesus, the king!’ 4

Jesus Prays in the Garden

5

Jesus returned to speak to his friends – but they had all fallen asleep. Jesus was even sadder now. He woke them, but it was too late.

After they had eaten, Jesus went with his friends to a garden on the Mount of Olives. He asked them to keep watch for him among the trees while he prayed. Jesus was very sad. He asked God to help him. ‘Father, I know that soon I must suffer and die. Please help me to be brave because I am very frightened. If there is any other way to save the people you love, then tell me now. Don’t make me do this if there is any other way.’

So it was that Moses and Aaron found themselves in front of the great Egyptian Pharaoh. ‘The God of the Israelites, the God of all the world, says, “Let my people go!”’ they said. ‘Who is this God?’ Pharaoh thundered. ‘Why should I do what he tells me?’ Pharaoh relied on his thousands of Israelite slaves. He had no plans to set them free – not even when God sent plagues on the land of Egypt. Aaron struck the water of the river Nile with his stick and the water turned blood red. Then Moses and Aaron went again to Pharaoh. ‘God says, “Let my people go!”’ At first Pharaoh agreed – he wanted God to take the plague away. But as soon as the water was green again, Pharaoh changed his mind. God sent a plague of frogs to invade

their beds and cooking pots. There were frogs wherever they turned! ‘God says, “Let my people go!”’ said Moses and Aaron. Once more Pharaoh agreed – and then he changed his mind. God sent ten plagues altogether – biting gnats and swarms of flies; disease on all the animals kept by the Egyptians; itchy, sore boils over all the Egyptian people; a hailstorm that destroyed their crops; locusts that stripped whatever was left; deep darkness for three whole days; and finally, the tenth plague, when the first-born males of all the Egyptians died. The tenth plague changed Pharaoh’s mind. ‘Go, go, go!’ said Pharaoh.

00

God had kept the Israelites safe throughout the final plague. He had warned them to prepare for a long journey, eating one last meal – the Passover meal – of roast lamb with bitter herbs and bread made without yeast. They had marked their doorposts with the blood of the lamb. And the angel of death had passed over them. Now they were following Moses – and God was leading them with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of bright fire by night – out of Egypt and out of slavery. But as soon as the Israelites had gone, Pharaoh changed his mind again! He sent an army of horses and chariots to bring them all back. When the Israelites reached the sandy banks of the Red Sea, they realized that the sea was in front of them and the Egyptian army was coming up fast behind them… ‘Hold out your hand over the sea, Moses,’ said God. And the sea parted to let them cross, safely to the other side. Then Moses held out his hand again and the waters closed up – so that the chariots of the Egyptian army who had pursued them were washed away.

On Easter Day in the Morning Mary has a friend called Jesus. Everywhere Jesus goes, special things happen. But one day soldiers march him away to die on a cross. Mary is very sad until she meets Jesus on Easter Day in the morning. This is the perfect introduction for children to the events of the first Easter. CONTACT US FOR MORE INFORMATION:

on’t hurt someone back who’s hurt you,’ said Jesus. ‘Try to be kind to them. God loves everyone the same.

Then Reuben looked at a boy who was not his friend. The boy looked at him. Then they began to smile at each other.

Try to be like him.’ Little Reuben looked at his friends and smiled. He thought about God loving everyone, good or bad.

But if you forget what I’ve said, you’ll be like a man building a house on a pile of slippery, slithery sand that will fall down with a CRASH.’ Now Reuben knew the secret. Now he knew how to be happy. He wanted to be like the man who built a house on a rock, strong and firm. Reuben loved his friend Jesus very much.

‘I have tried everywhere, but, as you said, there is no room. Do you know of anywhere where we can rest tonight?’ The innkeeper wiped his forehead with the back of his hand. He looked at Mary and then at Joseph. ‘I can only think of one place,’ he said. He pointed to a building beside the inn. ‘Stay there, if you want.’ ‘Thank you,’ said Joseph. He turned round and pulled the donkey towards the stable.

looked hot and tired, and beads of sweat sparkled on his forehead. ‘I haven’t got a space anywhere. Try one of the houses.’ He shut the door. Joseph tried the houses. They were all full. It was hopeless. Before long he found himself back at the inn. He stopped outside the door and knocked again. ‘Sir,’ he said, before the innkeeper could speak. ‘I know that you do not have any room in your inn, but my wife is pregnant and will soon give birth. 8

ight days after the baby was born, Mary and Joseph took him to be circumcised. ‘What will you call the child?’ Joseph was asked. ‘His name is Jesus,’ he replied. Six weeks later, they loaded their donkey to travel to the temple in Jerusalem. It was not far away, and although they had talked about returning to Nazareth, they had decided to make Bethlehem their home. Joseph carried the two young doves which he would give the priest to offer as a sacrifice to God. An old man stared intently at Mary and the baby she was holding. He 20

slowly made his way towards her, picking his way through the crowd. Mary handed Jesus to the old man. The man, whose name was Simeon, cradled the child in his arms, and then he spoke, his eyes overflowing with tears. ‘Sovereign Lord,’ he said. ‘You have kept your promise to me. I have seen the Saviour of the world!’ He handed Jesus back to Mary. Mary and Joseph looked at each other. They were too amazed to speak. At that moment, an old woman called Anna came up to them. She smiled and her face lit up with joy as she praised God. Mary and Joseph made their way back to Bethlehem, thinking of all the things they had heard and seen in Jerusalem. They were unaware of the three other travellers who had begun their journey to visit them.

Rejoicing With the Angels in Heaven!

O

The Gloria Suddenly there was a host of angels praising God and singing, “Glory to God in the highest!” luke 2:13

On the night I was born, my Father sent angels to some shepherds on a hillside. The angels told them about my birth. And off the shepherds went to find me in the stable in Bethlehem. Now it is time for you to join the angels around the altar, singing my praises in the prayer of the Church, the Gloria. Yes, angels are here right now! Even your guardian angel is singing this prayer. Ask my Holy Spirit to give you a picture in your mind of all the angels here in church with you. I love to hear you say, “We give you thanks. We praise you for your glory.” Think of something you are especially thankful for. Maybe you can thank me for your family, your friends, and the fun times you have. Or you can thank me for how I take care of you each day. Did you know that your praises reach me in heaven? In heaven I sit at the right hand of my Father. There’s so much love and laughter. Everyone is so happy to be with us and with each other. Heaven is such an awesome place! Jesus with all my heart I give you the highest praise!

Thank You for Believing! The Profession of faiTh “Because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20:29

T

The apostle Thomas had a hard time believing that I had risen from the dead. But when he saw me with his own eyes and put his hands in my wounds, he believed. He said to me, “My Lord and my God!” My Holy Spirit helps you to believe. When you were baptized, you received the

seed of faith. What a gift! And guess what? Whenever you spend time talking and listening to me at home or at Mass, you will come to know more and more in your heart who I am and what I have done for you! It was my early apostles who put together the prayer of the Church called the Creed. It tells the story of the Trinity: how my Father created the world, how I came to live on earth, and how the Holy Spirit, who spoke to the prophets, helps guide you and the Church. My friend, how delighted we are when we hear you say aloud these truths. And just as I told Thomas, you are blessed—for believing in me and for telling others how much I love them. I believe in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
