ELLIMAN ON THE WATER

During my four-year tenure as CEO of Douglas Elliman South Florida, I’ve experienced the extensive and exciting growth of the luxury real estate market in our region, which in many ways, is mirrored by Douglas Elliman’s own growth. In recent years, our cities have grown and experienced tremendous cultural expansion. Old condominiums on the beach have been replaced by incredible high-rises like Eighty Seven Park, Faena House and the Residences at the Miami Beach EDITION. There has essentially been a starchitect revolution with the likes of Renzo Piano, Rafael Viñoly and Rem Koolhaas, among others, who create visual masterpieces that have garnered international allure for a market that has for years been in the spotlight but without an equal caliber of real estate. Following the condominium revolution, which included larger outdoor balconies with retractable doors, outdoor kitchens, higher ceilings, superior quality finishes and curated amenities, South Florida’s single-family home market has taken a page out of the same book. Inside this special edition of ELLIMAN ON THE WATER, you’ll find some of the most extraordinary real estate assets in South Florida’s markets (and others). Douglas Elliman leads the nation in securing the most distinguished listings and taking the most exhaustive and comprehensive approach to exposing listings to our base of clients, both domestically and internationally, with our global partner Knight Frank Residential.

The fact is, he was on the precipice of a crushing defeat. A violation in the Louis Vuitton World Series leading up to the America’s Cup had spurred an inquiry, and the US team had been accused of cheating. As punishment, three team members had been expelled from the competition, and the Oracle boat was docked two wins before the racing even began in San Francisco Bay. Making matters worse, the Challengers, Emirates Team New Zealand, led by the coolheaded Dean Barker, had quickly capitalized on the situation, leaving Team USA in a 6–0 hole (despite their having won two races!).

he winds on San Francisco Bay are fickle. By late morning, you felt them starting to kick up. Before long, they were blowing at more than 20 mph—just shy of the 23-mph limit at which organizers would have been required to cancel the race. A green light was given. The crew of Oracle Team USA donned their flotation vests and their crash helmets and climbed aboard the AC72, an imposing 13-story jet-black catamaran prone to levitating above the water at breakneck speeds. As a powerboat pulled them into the bay for Race 9 of the 2013 America’s Cup, Jimmy Spithill, Team USA’s veteran skipper, exhibited an unruffled mien—betraying not an ounce of what he must have been feeling.

backdrop, seemingly from every vantage point, as the US team smoked the Kiwis, crossing the finish line a whopping 47 seconds ahead of the Challenger’s boat. The New Zealand team would go on to split the day with the US, winning the next race, a victory that left them just two wins shy of the nine needed to claim the Cup. Excitement rose to a fever pitch among their fans, who had descended on San Francisco en masse. From the deafening sound of their cheers, I could have sworn half of Auckland had crammed into the sliver of waterfront where I watched. “If you didn’t enjoy today’s racing out there, then you probably should watch another sport,” declared Kiwi Captain Barker at the post-race press conference I attended. What he didn’t know then, what he could never have imagined, was that in ten short days we would all be witness to one of the all-time greatest— and, perhaps, the greatest—comebacks in the history of sports, with Oracle Team USA somehow managing to hold onto

the oldest trophy in international sport, successfully defending its title 9–8. Despite tremendous setbacks, Oracle’s simulations had proved gratifyingly correct. But I had to wonder whether anyone outside the Bay area even noticed. America’s response to Team USA’s breathtaking historic victory? A resounding shrug.

T

he America’s Cup—and I’m speaking here not of the sporting event, but rather its prize—is an ornate, sterlingsilver “bottomless” ewer crafted by Garrard & Co., Britain’s official Crown Jeweller, in 1848 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee year, and it commands every bit of honor, every smidgen of deference, that such regal origins might suggest. The Cup flies first class. Swaddled in a Louis Vuitton case. When handled, the Auld Mug, as it’s affectionately known, is gingerly touched. By silk-gloved hands. And like many of us, in its later years, the Cup has grown rounder—so as to better accommodate the myriad names of sailing champions engraved along its base. When I meet up with Spithill again, he’s in Bermuda training for the 2017 Cup.The sport’s highest profile athlete—who’s twice had the legend of his heroic deeds inscribed on the Auld Mug after piloting his boat to victory in two consecutive Cups—is preparing to depart L.F. Wade International Airport for a race in Toulon. And he is flying commercial. Asked about the whereabouts of the Cup, the redheaded spitfire laughs off the glaring discrepancy between its travel arrangements and his own. “Mate, the Cup’s sort of on tour,” he says, adding, “It gets treated pretty well. It has its own security detail.” Spithill travels sans security team. But then he doesn’t really need one. The Australian transplant is an avid boxer. And though he’s been nursing a sore elbow of late (an injury that has flared up from time to time ever since he tore some tendons in the run-up to the 2013 America’s Cup), the worst injuries of his career—broken ribs, shoulder, wrists, leg, collarbone—have all stemmed from activity on dry land, including motocross and rugby. In other words, Spithill is one toughsumbitch. I catch Spithill as he’s leaving the team’s base of operations in Bermuda, which is playing host to the 2017 America’s Cup,

where he’ll attempt to lead his team to a “three-peat.” After a pit stop in London for meetings, he’ll fly on to Toulon, France, for the fifth leg of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series—a sequence of regatta races that determine which team will go forward as Challenger for the Cup. Spithill is not going to Toulon to race, however. The bum elbow will keep him in dry dock, for now. “I don’t like being on the sidelines, that’s for sure, but in some ways it’s actually good for the team,” says Spithill, a modest man unfailingly insistent on sharing the spotlight with his teammates. “It’s a bad business plan to rely on one person.” Still, the 37-year-old captain is the closest thing the sport has to a celebrity athlete. The two-time Cup champion and men’s 2014 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year is the sport’s somewhat unlikely but wholly necessary face—necessary, that is, if America’s Cup racing is ever to transcend the cloistered, elitist world of sailing to become, as some envision, a global phenomenon with a following in the hundreds of millions.

J

immy Spithill grew up the eldest of three children in the tiny Australian town of Elvina Bay, just north of Sydney. At the age of five, he learned to sail in a wooden dinghy (with a persistent leak). To get to school, the young Spithill took a boat, and since few kids his age lived nearby— and TV reception was lousy—Jimmy would come home after classes, hop in his boat and explore the surrounding waterways. Athletics also interested him: rugby, tennis, cricket, Aussie Rules football. “Anything, really, to get me out of class!” says Spithill. As a boy, his red hair and freckles made him stick out at school. He was bullied… until he picked up boxing, a development Spithill views in hindsight as practically inevitable. “Because whether you like it or not, you’re going to be fighting,” he has said. “The hair makes you a bit of a target.” These days, Spithill jokes about it with Graeme Spence, a red-bearded fellow Aussie who’s a grinder (read: beefy operator of manual winches) on Team USA: “We say, ‘If you’re a redhead, you’d better be a great runner. And then at some point you get really good at fighting—because you’re sick and tired of running.’ ”

(Spithill lost in the next round), Coutts made him one of his newest hires. At the 2010 Cup, held in Valencia, Spain, Spithill led Team USA into the final. In a quick, best-of-three format, Oracle needed only two heats. At age 30, Spithill found himself the youngest winning skipper in the competition’s history. But he wasn’t done yet. Not even close.

L

egend has it that at the first America’s Cup, in 1851, Queen Victoria, holding court on the Royal Yacht, asked one of her attendants who was in second place. “Your Majesty, there is no second,” came the reply. The yacht “America,” representing the nascent New York Yacht Club, would beat the best the British could muster and win the 100 Guineas Cup, which was subsequently renamed the America’s Cup in the boat’s honor. In 2016, increasingly sophisticated technology has brought with it heightened competition. Second place now means seconds behind—and threatening victory on every upwind tack. In other words, it’s going to be a fight. No stranger to confrontation, Spithill is prepared. “When you’re the Defender, you’ve got a bit of a target on your back, no question,” says Spithill. “But look, I think either way it doesn’t matter, because the best team is gonna win. And you’ve gotta go out there on the water and get it done.” Still, Spithill leaves nothing to chance. In an effort to gain even the slightest edge,

(CROWD) SAM GREENFIELD/ORACLE TEAM USA; (CHAMPAGNE) GUILAIN GRENIER/RED BULL CONTENT POOL

As a teenager, Spithill showed prodigious sailing talent, but his parents—his father is an engineer, his mother, a medical receptionist—struggled to send him to international competitions. But Jimmy’s competitiveness and devil-may-care attitude provided the necessary fuel to his fire. He was a relentless competitor. Once, a week prior to the national high school sailing championship, he broke his wrist playing rugby. With his arm in a cast, Spithill sailed anyway, and won the competition. In 1999, when Spithill was 20, he debuted with the Young Australia team, becoming the youngest skipper in America’s Cup history. Despite piloting an antiquated boat, he displayed remarkable savvy. While his team lost, Spithill’s outsize skills caught the eye of the 2003 US team OneWorld, which recruited him. With OneWorld, Spithill lost again, this time in the preliminaries. The winner? Larry Ellison’s Oracle team, which went on to the finals as Challenger but came up short. Returning in 2007 as helmsmen for the Italian team Luna Rossa, Spithill went headto-head with the lavishly funded Oracle Team USA. Though their budget ran into the tens of millions, the Oracle team was no match for Spithill’s quick thinking and highrisk/high-reward strategy. Routinely beating Team USA from the starting line, Luna Rossa sent the Americans packing. Italian fans, stoked by Spithill’s aggressiveness, started calling him “James Pitbull.” By that time, Oracle’s CEO, Russell Coutts, had not only noticed Spithill, he had seen enough. After the Cup was over

he took up flying lessons, eventually earning a pilot’s license. His reasoning? To learn more about aerodynamics. Spithill likens the boats being used in the current World Series, the new AC45— smaller than the AC72, but also faster—to a flying car or a rocket. Sailing one is apparently quite challenging. “It’s sort of like strapping a net trampoline to the back of a big truck, sending it around a rally course, and trying to stand up on that trampoline and move around,” says Spithill. “If you cross a line you’re going to pay a big consequence. People can get hurt.” (In the run-up to the 2013 America’s Cup, a British sailor became the first fatality in this new era of boats when the Swedish Artemis Racing AC72 he was crewing flipped over and broke apart.) “But when you push the red line like that, it’s incredibly addictive,” adds Spithill. While the Golden Age of sailing is squarely in the past, the age of Formula 1 sailboats lies ahead. Spithill believes it will lead to an influx of international spectators. I wholeheartedly agree. With GoPro cameras on board, and mic’ed-up sailors—the world will have live, unprecedented access to the 2017 America’s Cup races in Bermuda’s Great Sound. For many, it will feel like the race is happening right in their living room: the crystalline surf breaking against the carbon-fiber hulls and showering the crew, sailors barking commands as they try to be heard in what is effectively a wind tunnel. Spithill has one last prediction: the advent of flight. The AC45s used in Cup events today bounce down with some frequency during a race, their hulls tapping the water, even when moving at top speed. But with the next generation of boats—the 2017 Cup will feature a new model, the AC50— all bets are off. Hydrofoiling around an entire course may well be possible. “I just don’t think we’re going to see the boats touch the water at all,” says Spithill. But would even the outrageousness of that feat be enough to draw interest? In a sport that deftly—and capably—brings together Louis Vuitton and Red Bull (as sponsors), plutocrats and athletic sailors, state-of-theart technology and the volatility of the wind, opposites tend to attract. Whether the sport can draw a large nonsailing audience, however, still remains to be seen. But my money is on Jimmy Spithill. Yours should be, too.

he first time I climbed into a boat, I fell out of it. She was just a tiny dinghy with an outboard motor that started, coughing and sputtering, like a lawn mower. I misjudged her speed. Leaning on the edge, hand skimming the wake, I flipped backward into the cold water of Martha’s Vineyard, the blade of the propeller whirling precipitously close to my head. I was five. From that moment on, I probably should have been stricken with a deathly fear of boats and boating. But something else gripped me instead: the thrill of the sea. Build a yacht as tall as you’d like. Staff it with a small army. Load it up with gadgets, hot tubs, massage tables and nimble helicopters. Throw lavish parties without fear of party crashers (guests can only arrive by tender, anyway). Beneath all the gloss, the thrill of the sea remains. For is it not why we embark from land in the first place? What follows is a list of yachts that invoke within us that same feeling: a mysterious, primordial, oceanic thrill. Our bet is they’ll make you want to climb aboard. Just don’t fall in.

Helios 2001, Oceanco (The Netherlands) 59.1 meters 18 crew members €39 million y.co/yacht/helios Named for the Titan sun god of the ancient Greeks, the “Helios” more than meets expectations, its expansive deck areas designed for soaking up those rays in style. The focal point for outdoor activity is unquestionably the sundeck, where guests can enjoy a dip in the Jacuzzi without fear of dehydration since the bar is practically within reach. The spacious swim platform, where tenders and toys can be launched at a moment’s notice, is also a perfect perch from which to take in a sunset. The “Helios” offers a full-beam master suite with a study, his-and-hers walk-in wardrobes and heated marble floors. The gym (complete with a treadmill, cross-trainer and weights) and a drop-down projector for movie nights make the “Helios” a home away from home.

PJ 210 Sport Yacht 2018, Palmer Johnson (The Netherlands) 63.47 meters 15 crew members €48 million y.co/yacht/pj-210-sport-yacht Slated for completion in the summer of 2018, this beauty from Palmer Johnson projects a raw, primal power. Italian firm Nuvolari Lenard has designed Palmer Johnson’s P Sport Yacht line since the very first, a 120-footer, more than a decade ago. This latest iteration is very like her Wisconsin-built sister ship, the “PJ 210 Lady M,” the line’s flagship. Its sleek, tri-deck design, encompassing more than 10,000 square feet of accommodating space (including exterior living space), the PJ 210 Sport Yacht has been designed with a focus on flow-through indoor-outdoor spaces. Now there really is no need to sacrifice comfort or style for speed and agility.

Athena 2004, Royal Huisman (The Netherlands) 90 meters 21 crew members $69.9 million burgessyachts.com At 90 meters, the “Athena” is the fourthlargest sailing yacht in the world, and like

the Greek goddess for whom she’s named, she’s a devastating beauty. The three-mast schooner owes her distinctive form to the design dream team of Dykstra Naval Architects and Pieter Beelsnijder. Varnished teak cabin tops surmount an Alustar hull and, above it all, some 2,500 square meters of sail power billow in the breeze. Below deck, lightly stained mahogany abounds. Five cabins accommodate up to 12 guests, and a full-beam master suite boasts a separate study, walk-in wardrobe and luxurious bathroom complete with Jacuzzi tub. Athena expertly fuses exhilarating performance with Old World charm to vividly recall the Golden Age of sailing.

Silver Fast 2015, SilverYachts (Perth) 77 meters 18 crew members $89.3 million burgessyachts.com The arrow-like, 77-meter “Silver Fast” is the fourth yacht in the acclaimed SilverYachts series—and the most advanced. Designed by Espen Oeino, the “Silver Fast” retains the supersleek contour and unique hull lines of her much-prized predecessors, now set off by a new, monochrome (some might say menacing) silver paint job. On her maiden voyage to Port Hercules for the 2015 Monaco Yacht Show, the “Silver Fast” traveled 11,000 nautical miles with just a single stopover for refueling—a testament to her status as the most advanced, eco-fuel efficient vessel in the Silver series. With a top speed of 27 knots, the “Silver Fast” is the world’s largest and fastest (in terms of length-to-speed ratio) aluminum superyacht. Most notable is the aft deck, which features a stunning winter garden with wraparound sliding glass panels, allowing the owner to treat up to 20 guests to an indoor or outdoor dining extravaganza.

Sherakhan 1965, Vuyk & Zonen (The Netherlands) Recommissioned 2005 69.65 meters 19 crew members €29.95 million y.co/yacht/sherakhan A gorgeous, 69-meter yacht rebuilt from the shell of a dilapidated commercial ship, the “Sherakhan” was designed for exploring

in style. Her classically wide decks provide cabin space for up to 26 guests, as well as a fully equipped gym, spa and beauty salon. Don’t be fooled by the yacht’s classic lines. The traditional shape belies the ship’s striking contemporary interior, where the luxuriously appointed dining room occupies a colossal atrium bathed in natural light—which filters down through the glass bottom of the 18-person Jacuzzi above. Yes, the ship is named after the fierce tiger from Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, and you can take her on your own (aquatic) safari. Charter price? Just €385,000 a week.

Kismet 2014, Lürssen (Bremen, Germany) 95.2 meters 27 crew members An estimated $200 million luerssen-yachts.com As the owner of NFL franchise the Jacksonville Jaguars, Shahid Khan knows size does matter. So when he wanted an upgrade from his award-winning, 68-meter “Kismet,” he went back to Lürssen and asked for more detail, more drama. The result is the 95-meter superyacht of the same name that can accommodate a football

team. Designed by two leading names in contemporary design—Espen Oeino International for the exterior and Reymond Langton Design for the interior—the vessel outmaneuvered others in its weight class to win a 2015 World Superyacht Award. It features sweeping staircases, two full-height video walls, two fireplaces and a grand piano. But the pièce de résistance is the top deck, with an informal al fresco dining area parked beside an oversized barbecue, all situated behind protective glass doors that give access to a swimming pool and Jacuzzi, forwardfacing pilot seats and a rock garden. .

And Captain Clark is on her own, accompanied only by her feline first mate, Amelia. Clark, 36, was born into a San Diego family who regularly took to the seas for months at a time. Surfing and sailing went hand in hand. In college, Clark was the National Scholastic Surfing Association Champion of 2001,

iving on a boat isn’t all rope hammocks and pink sunsets. Sailing is hard work, especially when you’re going it alone. Clark spends an inordinate amount of time scrubbing algae from “Swell”s hull and fixing things. The quotidian sourcing of food is a constant challenge, as is finding sponsors. And hazards abound: storms, seasickness, lightning, sharks and, worse— unwanted suitors, and that’s just for starters. Still, Captain Liz’s outlook is bright. She’s living the dream of escape. It’s evident in the many photos she posts, on her website and social media sites, featuring blue skies, sweeping oceans and Clark beaming broadly. Even though she’s off sailing in the middle of nowhere, people have noticed. Clark’s a regular in Surfer magazine, was featured in the surf film Dear And Yonder and last year was named a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. Recently, Patagonia appointed Captain Liz a brand ambassador. “Patagonia has helped me get my story and message out to a more diverse audience,” she says. “I feel really lucky to work with a company with environmental and social values so similar to my own.” Clark is a tireless activist for environmental causes; chief among them are raising awareness of climate change, eradicating plastic pollution from the oceans and ending animal exploitation for meat and dairy products. Currently Clark is in the final stretch of writing a book. “It shows my inner evolution through the first eight years of my voyage—from an insecure girl with a big dream to a confident woman with a beautiful understanding of her

connection to the universe. I intend to show that anything is possible when you live from the heart space.” She recently hosted a camera crew from Patagonia on “Swell.” That led to a video, Ten Tuamotus Days With Liz Clark, an insider’s look at her life. In it, Captain Liz presents her mission statement: to find great waves, embrace new cultures and face her fears. Beyond the physical reality of battling the elements while living at sea, for Clark, being alone is terrifying. But she’s embraced it and learned to accept it with the help of her cat, a calico rescue with her own Instagram account. Since 2013, Amelia and Clark have travelled together with regular stints on land to see friends and gather supplies. And then one day last year, after the two alighted on a small island, Amelia went missing.

but competitive surfing wasn’t in her bones. She was hooked instead on the idea of solo exploration and seeing the world by sailboat. In 2006, she set sail from California to explore the coasts of Mexico and Central America, mostly by herself, on “Swell,” a donated Cal 40 by Jansen Marine. Before leaving, the 40-year-old ship required a complete overhaul, which Captain Liz took to like graduate school, with lessons from marine professionals in everything from rigging and electrical work to fiberglass repair. She also studied open ocean sailing, currents and weather patterns. And then…she went. “Magic happens when you follow your dreams,” says Clark. A few years in the Pacific led to an urge to go further. Captain Liz mapped out a 3,000-mile solo sail from the Galapagos to French Polynesia. The plan caught her mother’s attention and Mom, being Mom, offered to accompany her on the rough 22-day voyage. After that adventure together, Liz then spent a year wandering the South Pacific alone, surfing and connecting with locals while living on her boat. Then she discovered, rather alarmingly, that her beloved boat had a mysterious leak. It took nearly two years and another overhaul to make the vessel shipshape again. But by 2011, Captain Clark was once again sailing throughout the most remote islands of French Polynesia. She’s been there ever since, aside from the occasional visit home by plane.

anchored, Clark roasts the day’s catch on the beach of a Pacific island; (opposite, from top) in ports of call along her route, she makes time to share her story and talk to kids about plastic pollution, overfishing and climate change; yoga keeps Clark shipshape, strong and centered; she collects rainwater to keep herself (and Amelia) well hydrated.

Clark admitted to being “stunned” by the loss of her beloved companion. She camped out where she’d last seen the cat and returned to the little island often, leaving cat food and fish. She even consulted a pet psychic. Then, 42 days after her disappearance, Amelia turned up at a bed and breakfast on the island, looking healthy and strong. “Amelia’s return was incredible! I thought for sure she

wasn’t coming back, so to see her again gave me so much joy,” says Clark.
