Of course. One goes with the other. As the size got smaller, we’ve made sure that our readers get more of the quality content they become accustomed to.

3. Gulf News is the trendsetter in visual journalism in the Middle East. Do you predict that all the broadsheet newspapers in the region will follow suit?

I believe most, of not all, will do. It certainly

4. Did you see dramatic change in the editorial copy when you change to a smaller format? Was there realignment and restructuring to cope with the change of format?

Definitely. Our copies now tend to be shorter, snappier and visually attractive.

The newspaper restructuring was a twolayer process: in the pagination where some sections became standalones (like the Views, Technology, Motoring, Health,

6. How did the advertisers react to the change? And the readers?

I should say that in Gulf News, we never think of less or more. We are now actually offering more stories in smaller size. Our policy has always been to inform and entertain. If certain subjects need a bigger copy, so be it. But we are leaning towards educating both our staff and audience to tell

1. What is your greatest challenge as an Arabic newspaper designer?

I realize that easy to design a good page, but it’s difficult to design a “wow” page.

Nowadays, life is running at the speed of light. And with the over-speeding development of media and technology, readers are getting intensely impatient and they want

2. How do you assess the current state of design of Middle Eastern newspapers – both English and Arabic?

Arabic newspapers strive to change and innovate in keeping with the newspapers trends around the world. But I think the progress is a bit slow, and they will still need more time to achieve their goal and overcome many obstacles.

3. Why? Is it because Arabic readers are a bit conservative, as one would presume? And what are these obstacles?

Frankly, I don’t have one. There are too many good newspapers to name them, and each one is distinct. So I try to take advantage of all these facets.

1. At some point, why do you think a newspaper needs to redesign?

Media is currently speeding as internet and television are pulling away the reader’s attention, and the role of newspaper has been affected. Traditionally, newspaper design is boring, and the new breed of readers won’t waste time reading it. That’s why

2. You were greatly involved as an art director when Garcia Media redesigned your newspaper more than a year ago.

Well, as an art director, working with Dr. Mario Garcia is a new experience. Mario is a wise man with a vision for the newspaper’s future. I remember him saying: “I HAVE INK IN MY BLOOD”. I learned a great deal from him as he explained to me the history of newspaper and where it is heading in ten years time. When Mario and I were working on the redesign, he taught me how An-Nahar should be presented, what colors are best for our palette, as well as how editors should think and write.

My schedule was very hectic as I worked 20 hours a day for 3 to 4 months. With two shifts per day, it was really hard at the beginning. And I have continuously police the layout on the daily basis, for I fear that not doing so, the design and grid might change or disappear.

4. So how did your readers perceive the new design?

For the first few weeks, I received many complaints, because our readers were not used to it. I think that’s a normal reaction when one is given something new. But as time goes by, our readers loved and embraced it. And they find our paper much easier to read. So lately, I’ve been receiving a good deal of positive remarks.

5. An-Nahar is one of the oldest newspapers in Lebanon. I'm sure the volume of its readerships comes from older generations who have subscribed to your paper for decades. But what is your newspaper doing to entice new generation of readership?

6. Would you consider the transformation of your newspaper to its current design a radical one?

I call it an “update” of the design. It’s an upgrade of An-Nahar’s previous image, without losing its identity as a newspaper with a long history. It’s very important to keep in mind the identity of a brand when you

10. What's best advice you can give to an art director whose paper is contemplating a redesign?

My advice is to change without losing the identity of the newspaper. Also, the editors should cooperate. A redesign will never survive if the editors are not helping and supporting. It’s a team effort, and art director needs all these things to get the job done. Photographers, illustrators, subeditors -- everyone should understand the concept of the new design to achieve perfect result.

Shahin to editors, designers and photographers. Year to year we improve the publication quality by looking at the trends and choosing the best way to present our publication to the readers.

Of course, in the beginning the design team faced a big question mark with regard to white spaces, less text and the predominance of photos; very unusual in Arabic publications. My target now is to lead the Arabic newspaper market through a clear and consistent layout design and pagination.

2. What are the main changes in the redesign?

The perfect redesign is the result of a successful meeting of minds between editorial and design. In my opinion, there are two types of redesign:

Second, when you have a good and successful design, you need only to rearrange it. This is what I do every year in Al Bayan.

I plan to make significant design changes in Al Bayan this year.

3. Al Bayan was redesigned in 2007-08 by the Innovation team. How much of that design did you keep?

I believe that dialogue between different cultures always brings great results. It was a challenge both for Innovation and Al Bayan. It was a successful experiment because Innovation didn't work alone. The

4. How do you feel about the state of newspaper design in this region?

cations, which have started to realize the importance of design. I have seen a few samples of nice ideas, but they were incomplete. There is no consistence in design; you can find great pages and dull ones in the same publication.

Arabic newspaper designers need to interact with designers from other nationalities and exchange experiences. This will open new possibilities for design solutions.

5. How does your design department interact with the newsroom?

As I said in the beginning, it is all about team work. It is very easy to suggest and sell a good idea to the editor if it is good and worth it. Editors understand the importance of good design, and ask me for special designs if a report merits it. I remem-

7. How are readers reacting to the redesign?

We have not conducted any official market research regarding reader feedback, but have received positive feedback from the media community, which says it is easy navigate a clean design. They now categorize the newspaper as elegant.

8. What is the challenge for newspaper design in the region?
