Hare Coursing Dear Editor,

UK police are clamping down hard on hare coursing, confiscating dogs and using drones in their bid to crack down on the culprits who think of setting pairs of greyhounds on hares as “sport”. A special text messaging service has been devised to enable anyone who spots a hare coursing session to report this immediately. Here in Ireland the hare coursing season has just begun. Far from being a criminal offence as it is in many other jurisdictions it has the blessing of our government and quite a few opposition politicians, and the only police in evidence at a coursing event over the next five months will be Gardai directing traffic. As the weather worsens the hares will run for their lives in mud sodden, water logged, rain-lashed, or ice-covered fields. The Irish Coursing Club claims that the muzzling of greyhound has eliminated cruelty from the “sport” and that the practice plays a vital role in conserving the hare as a species. It is sadly wrong on both counts. Reports from wildlife rangers attached to the National Parks and National Parks Service (NPWS) who attend a number of coursing fixtures each season report mauling and striking of hares by dogs, resulting in broken bones that don’t heal, and other injuries. Video footage obtained by animal protection people and coursing fans themselves, and posted on YouTube, shows hares being battered and tossed about at Irish coursing events. The conservationist excuse has no basis in reality. Coursing clubs concentrate hares in certain areas known as preserves. The locations of these clusters of hares are well known, easily accessible, and especially vulnerable to poaching and hunting activities. Hare density throughout Ireland is so low that poachers would normally catch or kill very few of the animals, but the preserves offer ready made killing grounds for these unscrupulous gangs. Apart from this unintended consequence of their self appointed “conservationist” role, I would remind Irish hare baiters that the Arctic Hare is thriving, despite the complete absence of coursing clubs in that part of our world. The sturdy creature manages to survive in the bitterest climatic conditions and ward off deadly predators. It gets along just fine without the attention of people who would place them in wired enclosures to be chased by salivating greyhounds. Or maybe I’ve got it wrong. Could it be that our furry friends in the northern regions of the Arctic Circle are missing out on all the fun and games that Irish Hares get to experience thanks to our animal loving coursing clubs? Thanking you, John Fitzgerald (Campaign for the Abolition Of Cruel Sports)

Age Action’s Free DIY Service for Older People Age Action’s Care & Repair programme is providing DIY work free of charge for older people in Cork. The service has been in operation since 2009 and is expanding year on year as demand grows. Regional Manager John O’Mahony says that at this time of year people start to think about preparing for the autumn and winter months. “In September people begin to think about getting their garden tidied up or getting things like painting done before the evenings get dark and the weather turns.” “Often, older people are no longer able to do these types of jobs themselves. At Age Action we have volunteers who can help with DIY jobs around the house. In general, if it takes less than about two hours it’s something our volunteers would do free of charge.” “For bigger jobs that our volunteers can’t do, we keep a list of reliable tradesmen whose contact details we can provide for professional quotations.” To inquire about the Care & Repair service or to request a job, simply call Age Action at their new office on the Model Farm Rd. Procuro Therapy Clinic is in a Different Class with Complementary Therapies

Something extraordinary is happening in the world of Complementary Therapy at Church Road, Douglas. Lorraine Blackshields and her colleagues Suzanne Booth and Ruth O’Connor at Procuro Therapy Clinic, provide a holistic yet scientifically based, range of complementary therapies that work in conjunction with the medical care model delivered by your doctor. You will find Procuro through the red door among the shops on Church Road, Douglas West. As you can see from our array here and on the Douglas Post Facebook page the treatment rooms are state-ofthe-art for the provision of Procuro Therapy Clinics’ treatment ethos which I spoke to Lorraine about. She tells me, “I have been a Physical Therapist working in my own practice for ten years. I am the driver behind Procuro Therapy Clinic and our aim is essentially to provide a One-stopshop for wellness. The purpose of having our therapists work together, is to integrate our specialized treatments to help to heal, restore and achieve optimum health in a warm and friendly, yet professional environment. We work together with medical care professionals to provide the ultimate care package for each individual patient.” Procuro Therapy Clinic in its approach, is the only therapy clinic of its kind in Douglas and is building a recognised reputation within the community. When you visit you’ll see that Procuro Therapy Clinic is simultaneously welcoming and efficiently laid out. It’s relaxing to spend time here but will leave you confident you are in the right place for better health. Lorraine as a Physical Therapist has overall 15 years of experience in her field and primarily concentrates on the treatment of muscle and joint dysfunction, Sciatica, nerve impingement, Pelvic Imbalance, Spinal issues and has a particular interest in pregnancy related pain such as Pelvic Girdle Pain and Symphisis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD).

Ruth O’Connor is a Facial Reflex Therapist and REIKI practitioner. For her deeply detoxifying ‘Stress-Less Facial’ treatments, she draws on her knowledge of Touch for Health Kinesiology and Medical Massage to stimulate the lymphatic system and gently nudge the body towards clearing and restoring itself. The addition of REIKI allows the adrenal system to rest, thereby relieving mental and physical stress, inducing an overall feeling of well-being. Suzanne Booth is a Reflexologist and Deep Tissue Massage Therapist. Her therapies are ideal for alleviating Endocrine problems such as; menstrual issues, I.B.S, Anxiety or stress related ailments, Insomnia, Headaches, Asthma and lack of energy by stimulating the bodys own powerful healing affects. Her passion at present is Fertility Reflexology, working with both males and females going through fertility issues and also has vast knowledge in pregnancy and maternity reflexology. Each therapy is bespoke and designed with the patients’ health or wellness goals in mind. Gently producing a wonderfully relaxing, therapeutic experience at Procuro. The volume of people coming to Procuro Therapy Clinic is hugely encouraging and things have been busy since the Clinic opened some months ago. This is testimony to Lorraine’s reputation as a professional Physical Therapist and to the diversity of therapies being provided by all three current practitioners, Lorraine, Suzanne and Ruth. In time, it’s clear that the superb reputation being created will increase with the addition of new therapists coming on board. It elevates complementary therapy into a new and exciting area that will surely benefit a vast number of people already under medical care. I’m planning a visit myself. Poetry

WRITERS GROUP MEETINGS

Ronnie McGinn’s

Corner

Poetry is language. That is inescapable. It may contain ideas, but it is not ideas; it may tell a story, but it is not stories. It may express the whole range of human emotion, but unless its language is vital, fresh and surprising, those emotions will be blurred and ineffectual. Poetry, then, is a vital, fresh and surprising language. Stale language will be ineffective; commonplace language will have no impact. The poetry of personal feeling has always dominated the literary world and long as poets are individuals, all different from one another, and so long as they feel impelled to express their feelings in durable form, there will always be poetry.

Lower Back Pain Is Lower Back Pain disrupting your lifestyle and slowing you down? Is Lower Back Pain disrupting your lifestyle and slowing you down? Do you have to cut out some of the activities you really love to partake in? Would you like to feel free from pain and become more active? Adding Deep Tissue Massage Therapy to your lifestyle could help alleviate Chronic Lower Back Pain. An estimated 400,000 people suffer from Chronic Back Pain in Ireland. Doctors warn that Chronic Back Pain can impact greatly on ones quality of life as well as personal and professional relationships. Lower Back Pain is not always confined to the Lumbar area but may radiate down legs (Sciatica) or give hip, buttock or groin pain. People will complain of different levels of discomfort and at different times of day, week, month or year. It could be sudden or gradually become more painful as you get older. If Lower Back Pain is not treated it is highly unlikely that it will improve of its own accord. When treating Lower Back Pain it is very important to treat above and below the area and also to treat deep Abdominal muscles that stabilise the Spine. What we have found in treating Lower Back Pain is the importance of releasing the Gluteal Muscles (buttocks). The Gluteal Maximus, Medius, Minimus, Piriformis and Obturator muscles can hold chronic tension and need to be released as they play a very important role in extending and rotating the thigh and releasing Ball & Socket joint (hip). Any of us with Lower Back Pain will most definitely feel tight and tender in this area. Very often it is those of us that sit or drive for long periods of time present with more pain as muscles become short and tight and do not work efficiently enough. SO HOW DOES DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE THERAPY WORK? By kneading, stretching, manipulating and trigger pointing the areas affected by Lower Back Pain you are very likely to feel looser, freer and more relaxed in the area, as well as emotionally and physically relaxed. Circulation of fresh blood nutrients and minerals to area improves and inhibited muscles can once again begin to do their job effectively. Muscles can be ‘woken up’ and retrained to work efficiently. The human body has a remarkable ability to heal itself. However, there are times when it needs a helping hand. If you would like to learn more about Deep Tissue Therapy please contact me at Koru Chiropractic Clinic. At Koru we believe in educating and helping you to live a full, healthy and happy life. Why not treat someone to one of our new gift vouchers available at the clinic for the ideal gift. We offer 30 minute or 60 minutes massage treatment and we look forward to welcoming you Koru Clinic. Call (021) 429-2445 to see if your Lower Back Pain can be released with Koru’s experienced therapists!

Mahon Community News

Is there a community event or fundraiser in your area? Please let us know and we will be delighted to publish it for you. Email to – frontdesk@douglaspost.ie. To ensure publication your entry should reach us before 5 PM on Mondays We’re conscious of the importance of recognising the voluntary contribution that makes Mahon Community Centre and Mahon community itself a happier place in which to live. This week, we recognise Emily Jordan and Maria O’Mahony who’ve joined Maria Brothers on work experience at Maria’s Community Cafe. The lifeblood of Mahon Community Centre consists in people such as Emily and Maria joining us and giving their energy to the busiest Community Centre and the most welcoming in the Republic of Ireland. The Cafe goes from strength to strength because of the huge numbers of individuals and groups from across the age ranges making their contribution. The Rainbow Club for children and the parents of autistic children has excelled in its upgrading of the space the Club uses. Lord Mayor of Cork City Councillor Des Cahill popped by ahead of an official visit to view the soon to be completed Autism-sensitive outdoor play area in a few weeks to see how things were going and was met on site by Vice Chairman of Mahon Community Association John O’Mahony. The facilities for the Rainbow Club are of a high order and we look forward to full use being made of both the interior and exterior. The Celtic Historical Group is holding its AGM on Friday November 11th at 5.30 pm at Mahon Community Centre. Among other things to be discussed at the meeting will be the erection of a plaque commemorating Eamon De Valera at Fitzgerald Park. Celtic Historical Group secretary Denis Coffey tells us that he’s been engrossed in researches and a feature length documentary about “Dev”. Doubtless we’ll be reporting on its broadcast shortly. Finally we give our best wishes to Blackrock Camogie Club. Mahon is powerful in its approach to sport and involving the youth of Mahon in various codes. Well done ladies!

Cooper MakingDeirdre the administration of South Terrace, Cork. Estates 17A easier to navigate B.C.L.

By Deirdre Cooper, Solicitor. Tel: +353 (0)21 4312713

Email:deirdre@osullivanwhelan.ie

When a person Web: dies huge emotions mean the administration of www.osullivanwhelan.ie the deceased’s estate can be quite stressful. Your solicitor should be able to make this process less stressful and be clear with the procedure and timelines involved. On average the administration of an estate should take one calendar year to complete but obviously exceptions can occur. When someone dies without a will (intestate) his estate is distributed according to a statute and it is based on an order of entitlement of his relatives on the date of death. This same order of entitlement to inherit also is applied to who can act as the Legal Personal Representative (LPR) for the Estate of the deceased. A LPR is similar to an executor, detailed below, who assists a solicitor in extracting a Grant and ultimately administers the estate to those entitled under the rules of intestacy as set by the Succession Act of 1965. Where a will exists, executors will be named and they will gather and protect the assets of the deceased. They will ensure that all debts of the deceased are discharged as a priority. They will swear oaths to the Probate Office and to the Revenue that they are disclosing the full extent of the estate and they will faithfully administer same as per the will. A solicitor works in tandem with an executor and will liaise with financial institutions/ organisations on behalf of the executor to establish the value of the estate. Once all documentation has been lodged with the Probate office they will perfect the will and make it an official Court document, thereafter all assets can be collected and distributed according to the wishes in the will. Transparency is the key to a stress free process and often the process can become complicated for various reasons but proper communication between solicitor and client is vital. Notoriously Probates have a reputation for delays and ambiguity but I have being doing Probates for 14 years and at O’Sullivan Whelan we pride ourselves on providing a very satisfactory service.

Apologies In the previous issue there was a photo of Marian Quinn getting her presentation as she was selected as Ballinlough Person of the Year at the Ballinlough Summer Festival, The name of Anne Towler was incorrectly on the photo. Apologies to both ladies. Ballinlough Garda Forum The next Garda Forum meeting will be on Wednesday 19th October in the Community Centre at 8.00pm. If you have an issue or an item to discuss do come along. Light refreshments will be served. Retirement of Sgt John O’Connor (Community Policing) Sgt John O’Connor retired recently from Garda Siochanna after thirty two years service. A few years ago John contacted me with an idea to set up a Garda Forum in Ballinlough. As Ballinlough is in three Garda Divisions Anglesea Street, Blackrock and Douglas which means many residents; especially people moving in to the area, don’t know which Division they are in. So representatives from Ballinlough Community Association would regularly attend Forum meetings in Anglesea St, Mahon and Douglas areas. John came up with the idea of one Forum for all Ballinlough and any problems addressed at these meetings, that the Community Gardaí would attend to them or give them to the other areas. So John organised our first Forum which he attended and addressed the attendance. John set up Forums in Mayfield, Barrack Street and Mahon. He was the face of Community Policing in Cork City. The members of Ballinlough Community Association wish John many happy years of Retirement. We also congratulate Sgt Stewart Philpott on his appointment as Sgt. of Community Policing in Cork Bingo Bingo continues every Friday night at 8.00pm in the Community Centre. 45 Card Game Every Thursday night at 9.00pm in the Community Centre.

St. Vincent de Paul Flings Open its Doors to Embrace Douglas

community.

The Douglas Post had a visit from representatives of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul last week. Long time organiser and former President of the local SVP region, Brendan Dempsey, Fundraiser-in-Chief, Anne McKernan and Regional Retail Manager for Cork and Kerry, Mark Hussey are as one in seeking to promote and represent the SVP. They have a plan that places SVP shops at front and centre of the communities where they trade so that they may raise additional funds for the emergency work in which they are increasingly engaged. There are no fewer than 35 shops in the Cork-Kerry sphere of SVP’s influence and in an effort both to raise funds for SVP’s work and to have a positive effect within the wider community, Brendan, Anne and Mark are promoting with the help of media partners what they term ‘Customer Appreciation Events’ on a monthly basis in all 35 shops in the Cork-Kerry region. As the Douglas Post is next door to the Church Road branch of SVP retail here in Douglas, we naturally wanted to help. Why? Brendan who has been with SVP for four decades and more tells me that SVP looks out for the emergency and material well being of “no fewer than 5000 families” each of whom are facing deprivation across the old class divide. Readers of the Douglas Post will know that the magazine recognises quite often the extent to which voluntary services have become frontline emergency services for increasing numbers of people in the modern Republic and SVP’s outreach proves the rule that economic emergency crisis intervention has never been more necessary.

The shop is excellent and very well worth the while of your support.

Frank K Hanover

While SVP has corporate partners such as Musgraves, EMC, Apple, Boston Scientific, O’Connell Warehousing and Intel whose efforts are wonderfully magnanimous and very much appreciated, SVP must make its retail aspect the primary driver of the voluntary effort the organization carries out 365 days a year due to the increasing dependence upon SVP that we see in Ireland in 2016. And so, Mark Hussey tells me, “We’re extending an open invitation to everyone to join us at the Douglas retail outlet here in Church Road between 2pm and 7pm on October 21st Friday which is our first Customer Appreciation Event. We’ll have nibbles and hopefully we’ll be joined by the astute shoppers who regularly join us finding value and sustainability in our product lines and hopefully by astute donors and people wishing to volunteer as well.” You can expect to find the wonderful volunteers who already support SVP with their time and great energy at Church Road and several accomplished classically trained musicians from the Cork Academy of Music. If you’re prompted to get involved in a voluntary capacity, that’s going to be hugely appreciated. What’s evident from the way the society in which we live is fracturing is the appalling extent to which the wider society becomes less and less functional to more and more of its citizens. This necessitates that ordinary individuals become extraordinary to balance the society. Speaking with Brendan Dempsey, Anne McKernan and Mark Hussey it’s clear that SVP is approaching the future by increasing involvement in the Issue 1234

Know Your Rights Question:

What if I need a treatment that isn’t available in Ireland?

Answer: Cllr McCarthy publishes new book on society in 1916 Cork Cllr Kieran McCarthy’s new book, the eighteenth in his series of publications, is entitled Cork 1916, A Year Examined. It is co-written with solicitor Suzanne Kirwan. This book takes the year 1916 from the point of view that there were multiple conversations to be heard during the year – a kaleidoscope of ideas, which provided the context and framework for revolution – everyday life being one – some led Cork citizens to connect with the Republican mantra at the time and others to just maintain existence, survive and struggle with the bleakness of a national and local economy. Entering the Cork Examiner on the 1st of January and progressing page by page one discovers key nuggets about the nature of Cork society, the soul of Ireland’s southern capital, the ongoing conversations about maintaining a contemporary status of being one of Ireland‘s distinguished port cities, and all the advantages and problems that run with that. Cllr McCarthy noted; “In this book we publish a cross-section of the more important themes, which emerged during the year. The Cork Examiner in August 1916 celebrated its 75th anniversary and a proud tradition of “influencing public opinion” and offering “fairness” as they noted in their editorials. As a newspaper it was an active driver in the control of media, place and even time. For all the voices within this book about ideas about Cork and its role in the seminal year of 1916, there are also many voices on the role of this ambitious city in Ireland and further afield to questions of poverty that have never been completely solved or overly discussed. Many of the topics on housing, fair wage, political partnerships and similar ambitions still rage across our newspapers. There is much to learn from this time – not just on the political side but that life itself in any city keeps moving and that society needs to grow and evolve with it – and that even from a dark time in Ireland’s past, there is much to learn about the diverse framework of historical events and how they shape ourselves and our future”. Cork 1916, A Year Examined is published by Irish History Press and available in Waterstones and Easons.

If you are entitled to public health services that are available in Ireland, it is possible to access these services in the European Economic Area (EEA) and be repaid the cost under the CrossBorder Healthcare Directive. If you are a public healthcare patient and need treatment that is not available to you in Ireland, you may be able to use the Treatment Abroad Scheme to get the treatment in another country in the EEA or Switzerland. The Scheme may provide help with travel costs for the patient and a travelling companion, where appropriate. You must be referred for treatment abroad by an Irish-based consultant who is treating you as a public patient. You cannot refer yourself or be referred by a GP. You, and your referring consultant, must complete an application form and include a copy of your referral letter. Your application must be approved by the Health Service Executive (HSE) before you travel or start treatment abroad. You will get a decision on your application by letter, usually within 15 to 20 working days. If your application is not approved, you will be told the reasons and given information on how to appeal the decision. If your application is approved, the HSE will issue a form called S2 (also known as E112). This authorises treatment abroad so that you do not have to make any payment to the healthcare provider. The treatment you have abroad must be in public healthcare under a registered medical practitioner in a recognised hospital or other institution that accepts the form S2. If you don’t have the S2 at your appointment, you may be charged and not be refunded. Any treatments or consultations that are not pre-approved will not be covered. For an application form, contact the Treatment Abroad Scheme Office. You can get the contact details for your area by calling the HSE Infoline on Callsave 1850 24 1850 or online at hse.ie/ treatmentabroad. Alzheimer’s Disease Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia — the loss of intellectual and social abilities severe enough to interfere with daily functioning. In Alzheimer’s disease, healthy brain tissue degenerates, causing a steady decline in memory and mental abilities. Today, 44,000 people and 50,000 carers in Ireland are impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia. Although there’s no cure, treatments may improve the quality of life for people with Alzheimer’s disease. Those with Alzheimer’s — as well as those who care for them — need support and affection from friends and family to cope. Alzheimer’s disease may start with slight memory loss and confusion, but it eventually leads to irreversible mental impairment that destroys a person’s ability to remember, reason, learn and imagine. No one factor appears to cause Alzheimer’s disease. Instead, scientists believe that it may take a combination of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors to trigger the onset of symptoms. While the causes of Alzheimer’s are poorly understood, its effect on brain tissue is clear. Alzheimer’s disease damages and kills brain cells. Currently, there’s no cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Doctors sometimes prescribe drugs to improve signs and symptoms that often accompany Alzheimer’s, including sleeplessness, wandering, anxiety, agitation and depression. But only two varieties of medications have been proved to slow the cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer’s. Cholinesterase inhibitors This group of medications includes Donepezil (Aricept), Rivastigmine (Exelon), galantamine (Reminyl) and Memantine (Ebixa). The first drug approved to treat moderate to severe stages of Alzheimer’s, Memantine protects brain cells from damage caused by the chemical messenger glutamate. A healthy lifestyle may help prevent or postpone the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Because Alzheimer’s is most common in people over the age of 80, delaying the onset of the disease would increase the probability that people will die of other causes before Alzheimer’s has a chance to develop. Exercise your body. Higher levels of physical activity have been associated with a lower incidence of Alzheimer’s disease. Exercise your brain, too.

Maintaining mental fitness may delay the onset of dementia. Some researchers believe that lifelong mental exercise and learning may promote the growth of additional synapses, the connections between neurons and further delay the onset of dementia. SPORT Raffeen Creek Pitch and Putt with Brendan Hayes

The President’s Prize was played for over the weekend with first cards on Saturday and concluding on Sunday. A bit of effort was put in over the week getting the course ready so here’s a big thank you to Richard O’Flaherty and his staff. Scoring was good also. I was out with the in-laws the Dunne brothers. As I said before, Tom is a work in progress but I can see light at the end of the tunnel (mind you, it is a long tunnel). Denis was steady. He was also carrying an injury which he received during the week when Gregg Lynch’s dog took a liking to him hopped up on him and gave him a lovebite. Results for President’s prize as follows: The overall winner was Weeshie Murphy, -18, 1st Gross was Dave Ahern with -20, 2nd Nett was Ian O Donoghue. 2nd Gross was Barry Morrissey and 3rd Nett was Jimmy the Leak. That’s what I said the Leak’s back and playing great stuff. Poor old Syd Venner was very unlucky with a score of -18 only to be pipped by Barry Morrissey for second Gross and by the Leak for 3rd Nett. • Next Saturday the Turkey Competition begins. • There’s a Committee meeting Thursday night. • Finally here’s a reminder to keep the 20th of October free as this is one of the most important AGM’s in the clubs history.
