We’d love to hear from you. If you have any news, views or issues you’d like to see covered, write to the Douglas Post, Douglas Community Centre, Church Road, Douglas, Cork or by e-mail to marie@douglaspost.ie Please include your name and address and a contact number. Letters may be edited due to space considerations. From the Editor Douglas Post Douglas Community Centre Douglas Community Park Douglas Dear Reader,
welcome to the new edition. As ever we have an impressive array of community reports and we’d like to thank the respective representatives of Carrigaline Community, Mahon Community Centre, Ballinlough Community and of course Douglas Community for their contributions to this issue. They are distinctive and very popular reports. The magazine often feels chock-a-block with community spirit and we’d further like to thank the sporting contributors and the various advisers whose eloquence and news so enhances the Douglas Post. Thank you. The Douglas Post wants to hear from you. If you have a community event, are associated with a sporting endeavour you want to publicise and report upon, or if you wish to draw attention to the thousands of activities that all community minded people show their creativity and society building through, then we are here for you. If you'd like to get in touch then we welcome queries and submissions alike at editdouglaspost@gmail.com where we'll have a keen ear for your concerns. The Douglas Post despite being an advertising platform has a prime directive of being a community oriented magazine and in the coming months you’ll find this emerging increasingly. For now we want to hear from people within the distribution area. That’s Midleton in the east, Ballincollig in the west, the city and all points in between. In a short while, we’ll reveal other features and planned sections that we feel will be enjoyed by our lovely readers but we have to keep the lid on them just yet. In any event, please enjoy this issue of the DP. Best regards,
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, at the Royal College of Physicians, Kildare Street, Dublin 2. The event, which is kindly supported by A. Menarini, GSK and Novartis, is open to people with COPD. COPD is perhaps more commonly known by other names such as bronchitis or emphysema. It is estimated that some 380,000 people have the condition in Ireland. The conference will hear from leading Irish and UK experts on the latest developments in COPD treatment and care, while attendees will also be able to quiz our politicians on their plans to develop COPD health policy. Of particular interest will be a range of lifestyle and well-being workshops, including de-stressing through mindfulness, lung exercises through singing, and gentle movement through dance. World COPD Day is an important opportunity to remind people to be aware of the symptoms and to remember the "ABC" of COPD: - Avoid the risks such as smoking and environmental toxins - Be aware of the symptoms that include persistent cough with phlegm, chest infections and breathlessness - Consult a GP for a simple spirometry breathing test, particularly if you are over 35 years, have symptoms, are or have been a smoker, or have a family history of lung conditions. Booking for the conference is on a first-come, first-served basis - simply telephone (01)2833500. Further information on COPD can be found by visiting www.copd.ie. Ballinure used to be a quiet little village in Blackrock. It has long since been swallowed up by a growing city and a hungry Celtic Tiger. Our poem this week is from local Ballinure native Con Hannigan. Written as a traditional Anglo-Irish style ballad, Con arouses the emotions by taking us down his own memory lane and triggering a trickle of nostalgia with an uplifting overture that
Sweet Ballinure Oh, Sweet Ballinure, it has vanished they say, But tonight it has come back to life. For to see the old faces from days long gone by Makes us all feeling happy tonight. This spot of our birth was the nicest on earth, No matter where e'er we did roam. But tonight there is joy as we sing the sweet songs That we learned in our own cottage home.

This spot of my childhood I remember quite well And the games that I played when a boy. Hurling and football and swimming as well, Shure, to all of us it was great joy. I remember the Furlongs, Ahernes and Mick Cash, The Murphys, the Hayes's as well. The O'Connells, the Healys, the Leahy’s and Walsh. Ay yes, I remember them well.

Now, let's fill up our glasses and toast to the past, To our loved ones who long since have gone. To our exiles all scattered all over the world, . On whom the bright sun of God may shine upon. To think of those glorious days of the past, We're all proud of them, I'm very sure. And where e'er we may roam be it far o'er the foam, We are proud of you, Sweet Ballinure.

Is Lower Back Pain disrupting your lifestyle and slowing you down? Is Lower Back Pain disrupting your lifestyle and slowing you down? Do you have to cut out some of the activities you really love to partake in? Would you like to feel free from pain and become more active? Adding Deep Tissue Massage Therapy to your lifestyle could help alleviate Chronic Lower Back Pain. An estimated 400,000 people suffer from Chronic Back Pain in Ireland. Doctors warn that Chronic Back Pain can impact greatly on ones quality of life as well as personal and professional relationships. Lower Back Pain is not always confined to the Lumbar area but may radiate down legs (Sciatica) or give hip, buttock or groin pain. People will complain of different levels of discomfort and at different times of day, week, month or year. It could be sudden or gradually become more painful as you get older. If Lower Back Pain is not treated it is highly unlikely that it will improve of its own accord. When treating Lower Back Pain it is very important to treat above and below the area and also to treat deep Abdominal muscles that stabilise the Spine. What we have found in treating Lower Back Pain is the importance of releasing the Gluteal Muscles (buttocks). The Gluteal Maximus, Medius, Minimus, Piriformis and Obturator muscles can hold chronic tension and need to be released as they play a very important role in extending and rotating the thigh and releasing Ball & Socket joint (hip). Any of us with Lower Back Pain will most definitely feel tight and tender in this area. Very often it is those of us that sit or drive for long periods of time present with more pain as muscles become short and tight and do not work efficiently enough.
By kneading, stretching, manipulating and trigger pointing the areas affected by Lower Back Pain you are very likely to feel looser, freer and more relaxed in the area, as well as emotionally and physically relaxed. Circulation of fresh blood nutrients and minerals to area improves and inhibited muscles can once again begin to do their job effectively. Muscles can be ‘woken up’ and retrained to work efficiently. The human body has a remarkable ability to heal itself. However, there are times when it needs a helping hand. If you would like to learn more about Deep Tissue Therapy please contact me at Koru Chiropractic Clinic. At Koru we believe in educating and helping you to live a full, healthy and happy life. Many people have heard of Powers of Attorney but what exactly is an Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA). An EPA is signed up while a person is still of sufficient mental capacity to understand the document and when they are capable of looking after their own affairs. It is too late to put an EPA in place when a person has deteriorated beyond a certain level, tested by their GP. It is put in place as a type of insurance or peace of mind that should a time come when they are not able to look after themselves they can rely on the help of others. If a person starts to suffer deterioration in memory or understanding then it can be very difficult for family members to legally deal with that persons affairs as they do not have the authority to do so. In an EPA the person wishing to put it in place appoints one or more people to become their attorneys should it be medically considered that they are not capable of looking after their own affairs. They can detail clearly in the document what powers they wish the attorneys to have in dealing with their money or their day to day personal care.
Cllr. Nicholas O' Keeffe Wednesdays from 1.15 pm to 2 pm
Mahon Community Centre welcomed the Old Bridge Historical Society to Mahon Community Centre recently and received a letter from the group’s Secretary Breda Lynch which we paraphrase here. “A big thank you to the manager of the Mahon Community Centre, Denis Coffey and the staff. We had a remarkable day on our visit to the Mahon Community Centre on Thursday 27th October 2016. One of the brighter aspects of our visit to the Centre was the great hospitality we received from Maria at Maria's Community Cafe. The prices and the quality of the food was just remarkable. The facilities at the Centre were excellent. We spent two hours in the company of Denis and Centre staff, enjoying the ambience of the tour of the Community Centre, both inside and out. There is so much going on, it’s very hard to take in all in one visit. We received a full guided tour and a history of the Centre since it opened in 2003. The Centre is clearly aimed at providing a wonderfully communal destination to everyone who comes through its doors. It really is a remarkable Centre and retains an impressive diversity in its approach. We give our sincere gratitude to Denis Coffey, Centre manager to the staff and to Maria of Maria's Community Cafe for such excellent service and value.

The document is signed by the person, their solicitor and their GP all on the same day and often a letter from the GP will be required to state that the person understands the document they are signing. Two close relatives, other than the attorneys appointed, will then be put on notice that the person has signed up an EPA. Ryan handing over the cheque to Ronald Mc Donald House
A key point is that the document all signed up will then be held until it is needed and is only activated or registered if and when the person is deemed to be no longer medically capable of managing their own affairs. The EPA document is then lodged in the Wards of Court Office in the High Court. They will review all of the documentation lodged and they will then register it as a court document which gives the attorneys the power to look after the affairs of the person based on the specific instructions within the document itself. An EPA gives a person great peace of mind. It may never be needed but if it is then a person can rest in the knowledge that their affairs are in order and their wishes are known.

Is there a community event or fundraiser in your area? Email to – frontdesk@douglaspost.ie. Jazzy Autumn Colour in the Park! The October Jazz week-end and the Hallowe'en mood which was embraced by so many in our local businesses and homes, not to mind the gorgeous weather, created a great atmosphere over the break. Many people commented on the visual feast of autumn colours in the trees in our Community Park. It’s such a gem for the wider community to enjoy.
us with staff at our community centre, such as office administrator and caretakers. SECAD also supports mental health activism, youth projects, training courses, small grants, networking and mentoring to people setting up their own business. The area covered by SECAD stretches from Ballincollig to Youghal Bridge and includes Douglas, Glanmire, Carrigaline, Cobh, Carrigtwohill and Midleton.
ELARD/SECAD Representatives visit to DCA, September 2016 ELARD President Kristiina Tammets (Estonia) and Joint Coordinators of European Rural Parliament Kirsten Birke Lund (Denmark) and Michael Dower (U.K.) visited our centre along with members of the SECAD group which included Suzanne Kearney, Assistant CEO of SECAD in the Cork area, Garrett Kelleher a SECAD Board Member and Declan Barron, Supervisor for the Douglas area Tús Programme. The purpose of their visit was to assess how the Leader Programme was making a difference in our area and what impact, if any, it was having.
Presentation to ELARD & SECAD Visitors Paudie Martin made a presentation on the work of Douglas Community Association explaining that it was founded by local woman Mary Hanley in 1969. It now has four very active services, Meals-on-Wheels, Pre-School and Playgroup, Tidy Towns, Park Events who collaborate with other groups in the area such as Young at Heart, Lion's Club, the I.C.A. and Douglas Scouts. The stakeholders supporting the new building project are SECAD, Dept. of Health, HSE South, Cork County Council, Cork City Council as well as local funding by volunteers at Douglas Community Association. Paudie explained that the playground was upgraded in 2008 by the County Council and a recently fenced in hard-surface kick-about area was also provided. Paths to Ballybrack were completed two years ago again by the council, creating many interactions within the community, i.e. visits by school children, the general public, scouting groups and included an initiative between Carrigaline Mens' Shed and local children who created bat houses. The ELARD, SECAD group and DCA members were then taken on a walk through Ballybrack Woods (known as the 'Mangala') by Will O'Halloran of SECAD. He spoke to us about biodiversity and the part it will play in future recreation and the AllIreland Pollinator Plan drawn up in 2015 which has developed a strategy to address pollinator decline and protect pollination for the whole island. They have identified 81 actions to make Ireland pollinator friendly. Outcome of Visit - It was very inspiring to interact with all of these people who work not alone for communities in Ireland by also with our partners in the EU and to hear about how concerns such as the health of our planet are being tackled in practical ways, even locally in our Mangala, by embracing up-to-date science.
Brief Overview Just to explain ELARD (European Leader Association for Rural Development) is a non-profit association set up to improve the quality of life in rural areas through integrated local development. Members come from Belgium, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Republic of Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden. SECAD (South East Cork Area Development) is responsible for the administration of Leader funds in the South East Cork area. It is a partnership company, one of thirty eight in Ireland. It works with state agencies such as local authorities, the community sector and social partners (i.e. employers, trade unions, farming and environmental sectors). It funds the roll-out of programmessuch as the Local Community Development Programme and provides some funding for community projects such as our new extended building at the Douglas Community Park for which we received a grant of €150,000. It also funds the Tús work placement scheme for young unemployed adults. This scheme and the Community Employment scheme (run by SOLAS) provide

David Akinwanda - Former Assistant Caretaker at DCA on SECAD CE Scheme David comes from the Yuruba tribe in South West Nigeria and has been in Ireland for 16 years. He has two young sons. He will be known to many people at DCA from the three years he spent as assistant caretaker at the centre where he was employed under the Community Employment Scheme. He is a very active member of the Douglas community as a choir member at St. Columba's Church, a Minister of the Eucharist at daily morning masses and a regular volunteer with the Tidy Towns group. David has really embraced the local community. When his community employment came to an end, David was eligible to take on a fulltime course in Computer Software in the School of Commerce and recently this led to him taking a position with computer giant, EMC in Ballincollig. We wish David great success in the future and are proud of him for all the effort he has made in transitioning from Nigeria to his new home in Ireland.
The meeting is open to everybody who wishes to attend from the wider community and will clarify the work in the past year carried out by Douglas Community Association and all its voluntary partners on site at the centre and in the park. Reports are being prepared by each partner group and these will inform those in attendance on the night. We look forward to seeing all interested parties.

Tidy Towns - Grotto area on Church Road Two locals, Brian Downey of St. Columba's Terrace and Teddy Daly a retiree, maintain this lovely little grotto and the adjoining green area on Church Road, opposite St. Columba's Church. Brian cuts the grass and Teddy plants flowers from time to time, having recently planted daffodils around a tree area. It is a sacred place, important to many people in Douglas who like to stop and pray there as they pass by on the pathway to Carrigaline Rd. We acknowledge and appreciate their work in looking after it. Douglas Pre-School and Playgroup - a mom's account We found Douglas Community Pre-school last year when we were viewing pre-schools for our little girl. What drew us to the school on the open day was the focus on the child and our little girl immediately felt at home. It was exactly what we were looking for. Everything was explained to us and the staff made the transition to pre-school for our child so much easier. We would recommend anyone about to make the transition to pre-school to choose Douglas Community School for their child. Douglas Community Preschool & Playgroup can be contacted on 086 217 161. There are still some places available. Issue 1244

Know Your Rights DISCRIMINATION WHEN RENTING RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY
Question:
Are advertisements saying that landlords won’t accept tenants getting Rent Supplement allowed?
Workshops ongoing, Discover Cork: Schools’ Heritage Project 2017 School workshops are ongoing for the Discover Cork: Schools’ Heritage Project for the 2016/ 17 school season. The Project, which is entering its fourteenth year, allows students to explore and investigate their local heritage in a constructive, active and fun way. Interested students can pick any topic on Cork’s local history to research and can participate as individuals, groups or as a class. Students produce a project using primary material such as fieldwork, interviews, making models and short films of their area. Co-ordinator and founder of the Schools’ Heritage Project, Cllr Kieran McCarthy noted that “The project is about thinking through, understanding, appreciating and making relevant in today’s society the role of our local heritage – our local history, our oral histories, our landmarks in our modern world for upcoming citizens. This year the workshops involve visiting 35 schools with 35 hours of workshops given overall to classes. The workshops comprise showing students projects from previous years and providing a framework to work to and to encourage colour and creativity”. The City Edition of the Project is funded by Cork Civic Trust, Cork City Council, The Heritage Council, Lifetime Lab, Sean Kelly of Lucky Meadows Equestrian Centre, Watergrasshill and Cllr Kieran McCarthy. Application forms were sent to all principals and history teachers in Cork. A County Cork edition of the project is also in operation and organized by Kieran. The project application process is still open for teachers; contact Kieran at kieran_mccarthy@corkcity.ie for details or log onto Kieran’s heritage website www.corkheritage.ie.
Answer: Equality legislation applies to lettings and accommodation. The Equal Status Acts 2000-2015 ban certain kinds of discrimination. Broadly speaking, discrimination means that you receive less favourable treatment than other people in a comparable situation on grounds of gender, civil status, family status, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, race or membership of the Traveller community. Landlords cannot discriminate against potential tenants on these grounds. Since 1 January 2016, following an amendment to the Equal Status Acts, landlords cannot discriminate against tenants because they are getting Rent Supplement or any other social welfare payment, or a Housing Assistance Payment (HAP). This means that landlords can no longer state when advertising accommodation that Rent Supplement (or HAP) is not accepted and they cannot refuse to rent you accommodation because you are getting Rent Supplement, HAP or a social welfare payment. However, if you are sharing with the home owner (under the Rent a Room Scheme for example), a license agreement exists and the Acts do not apply. There are some other exemptions. If you feel you have been discriminated against by a landlord or their agent, you can contact the Workplace Relations Commission to find out more about making a complaint under the Equal Status Acts. Visit workplacerelations.ie for contact details. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Athlete's foot Athlete's foot is a fungal infection that develops in the moist areas between your toes and sometimes on other parts of your foot. Athlete's foot usually causes itching, stinging and burning. Also called tinea pedis, athlete's foot is closely related to other fungal infections with similar names, which include: • Ringworm of the body (tinea corporis). This form causes a red, scaly ring or circle of rash on the top layer of your skin. • Jock itch (tinea cruris). If your fungal infection is severe or doesn't respond to topical medicine, your GP may give you a prescription oral medication. Oral medications include: Itraconazole (Sporanox), Fluconazole (Diflucan) and Terbinafine (Lamisil). Prevention These tips can help you avoid athlete's foot or ease the symptoms if infection occurs: • Keep your feet dry, especially between your toes. Go barefoot to let your feet air out as much as possible when you're home. • Go with natural materials. Wear socks that are made of natural material, such as cotton or wool, or a synthetic fiber designed to draw moisture away from your feet. • Change socks and stockings regularly. If your feet sweat a lot, change your socks twice a day. • Wear light, well-ventilated shoes. Avoid shoes made of synthetic material, such as vinyl or rubber. • Alternate pairs of shoes. This allows time for your shoes to dry. • Protect your feet in public places. Wear waterproof sandals or shower shoes in communal showers, pools, fitness centers and other public areas. • Treat your feet. Use an antifungal powder daily. • Don't borrow shoes. Borrowing risks spreading a fungal infection. For more information contact Garvan at Lynch’s Pharmacy on 0214366923 Issue 1244

In a run-down saloon in a small town in the Wild West, One-eyed Pete and his gang sat playing poker. There were 5 men round the table. After several games one of the men eyed the dealer narrowly and drawled 2 I says you’re cheating”. It was an unwise comment. The dealer whipped out a gun and shot the offender dead. Naturally someone sent for the sheriff. However, even though the incident had been witnessed by everyone in the bar, he was unable to attest any of the men who had taken part in the Game. Why ?

The Inter-Generational is over for another year. Teams from all over the city and county converged in the concert at the City Hall. On each team two seniors and two students all hoped to win the Echo Boy Perpetual trophy. Well done to the 38 different schools and colleges that took part. It's the commitment and participation of community groups that meant the 6th of year the Quiz was such a success. Especial congrats to Ballyphehane and the students from Presentation Girls school Ballyphehane. Brooklodge were 2nd and Tracton came 3rd after a tie-break round with Blackrock. We give a big thank you to our sponsors the Evening Echo, Cork City Council and Cork County Council and HomeInstead Senior Care. The main purpose of the Quiz is to create a forum for younger and older generations to come together and learn from each other in a spirit of community. Last week fifty of the Young at Heart went to Ennistymon for 4 days. The weather was great and we took a trip to the smallest of the Aran islands Inis Oire, took a trip around on horse and cart as well as a tractor and trailer and went to Lisdoonvarna looking for a few rich farmers. But there were none to be found. With the dark nights upon us here's a reminder to get a Pendant Alarm which you can pick up the application form from the office at 17 morris house. SPORT Raffeen Creek Pitch and Putt with Brendan Hayes
Sunday morning the sudden Autumn colour change in the foliage surrounding our course was spectacular and a joy to behold. The pitch and putt wasn't bad either. I was out with steady Ger O’Sullivan and our opponents in the fourball were John Hughes and John Calnan. Good to see John Calnan back, his pitching is still Senior standard but his putting?? Ger and myself were on fire and we went on to bag the turkeys by 4 clear shots. Winners of the Gross were Syd Venner and John Tett. Saturday results; small turn out so no turkey competition. Barry Morrissey was Anchor man and he won the Gross with Weeshie Murphy and the Nett with Gregg Lynch. Our condolences go to the O’Driscoll family of Carrigaline and the O’Sullivans of Shanbally on the untimely death of Cristine sister of club member Sean and Aunt to Ger O’Sullivan, our club Treasurer.

The Hyundais of Thierry Neuville and Hayden Paddon finished third and fourth. Waterford's Craig Breen unfortunately crashed out on Friday, with his Citroen too badly damaged to continue.
