ABOUT
Gabriela was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1962. She walked on a fertile spiritual road which nurtured her work with a philosophical conception. Since she was a little girl, painting was part of her life in most of her stages. After having been a businesswoman and marketing professional and having performed activities like drama and pottery Gabriela awoke in a deep understanding of her existence. The gates to her creativity were opened through her works of art as the result of everything she has lived. Tolomei is recognized as one of the most emerging argentine plastic artists at international level. Her career includes exhibitions in New York, Miami, Palm Beach, Los Angeles, Barcelona, Mexico City & Punta del Este. Several other businesses will be taking her production to countries such as Germany and China. Currently, for almost two years as the result of her professional career, she has reached a permanent and exclusive representation in London, at DEBUT CONTEMPORARY where she is considered one of the artists with a growing positioning, potential and personality in her artwork. Words such as passion, heartbeats, vibration, energy and mystic are the definition of her work: just ‘a Tolomei’. www.gabrielatolomei.com 2 TOLOMEI
IN THE NEWS ‘Artwork that beats strongly' yIn HEARTBEATS, Gabriela Tolomei exhibits her artwork and worked objects with the color, the passion and the heart in search for a luminous spirituality. “At home where I was raised, art was beating and you could breathe it since I was a little girl”, says G.T., searching for some distant mandate. But there are things that you don’t forget. These things travel on the roads and return and you never know well from where. The painting doorway was opening to get revealed in itself, later on. First, at Ana Fuch’s workshop, then studying kabbalah and the reading of the book by Julia Cameron, 1992, “The Artist’s Way” were the times where Gabriela was placed at the right crossroad where the present and certainty merged. “There I felt the deep need that I was an artist, and since then, I dropped everything else and I never stopped”.
Tolomei acknowledges her works on lyrical abstraction with its roots in Fauvism. Among her influences she mentions Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Willem De Kooning, Henry Matisse and Jackson Pollock. “I experiment as if I were an alchemist. Nature inspires me, feelings guide me”, she affirms. “My artwork goes deeply in the knowing of the soul, not the intellect, in the spirituality and mysticism”. Besides paintings, Tolomei works also on objects and pieces of furniture because that enables her to practice on another dynamic creativity, three-dimensional work that turns chairs, armchairs and tables into unique pieces. But now she expands her interest for decoration launching her new project, her brand, that is applying her artwork on different materials such as metals, ceramics, glass or acrylic. In the exhibition it is possible to see how technology makes possible this kind of production at a great quality.
HEARTBEATS is the name of the exhibition that she shows us at ESCARLATA GALLERY; it’s the heart; it’s the passion; it’s heartbeats. HEARTBEATS is color, that is, “a means to influence directly the soul”, as her admired Wassily Kandinsky had said. For Tolomei, color is inner vibration. There is no other way to get close to her acrylics on canvass which flood your sight with sunlight, with flowers, wings and a desire to live. There is neither emptiness nor sorrow in that garden without any decline. “What grows at first sight is the color, its own maceration, the search of light through colors. I search that light, that mysticism, that message, that spirituality”, she says.
In order to beat you have to be alive, nothing else. On the road of Tolomei’s sounding Heartbeats, life is present exactly as we have dreamed of it, passionately and tenuously. Each canvass seems to keep the secret of the artist’s joy together with the spontaneity that someone opens the door of her house.
From 2009, when she started at a local gallery exhibition, she exhibited at The Hilton Hotel, the German Embassy, The House of Culture in San Isidro and Buenos Aires Design Center, besides New York, London, Los Angeles, San Diego, Miami, Barcelona, Mexico City and Punta del Este.
‘When I paint I feel I’m dancing within my artwork’
“Each of my works has its own spotlight, its own time and story. But I also have my favorite ones”, she says. And she mentions three of them: “One is Joy my first one in 2009 because it awakened in me the desire and the productivity. I also remember especially the first piece I sold: I fell in love again. And the one Contemplation, based on a place where I go to practice meditation in Brazil for many years.

DIXIT y‘Gabriela Tolomei is a rare jewel in the art world; she is a rare individual whose understanding of life, business and spirituality is incredible. Her ambition, passion, mission and vision are enriching not only for those around her and those who are lucky to have come across her work and bought it/them for their home, office, museum but the society as a whole. There are successful artists; there are unsuccessful artists; and then there are rare jewels in the art industry and that rare jewel is called Gabriela Tolomei. Her work exudes something so special and so energising and very spiritual too that no matter who you are, where you come from, what you know or don’t know about art and life, you will be moved’.x Samir Ceric Founder & CEO | Debut Contemporary | London, UK y‘When viewers zoom in Gabriela Tolomei’s intense artwork, a hidden poem is discovered. It springs from the luminous short defined strokes; it reveals from darned and surrounded loops which, as a whole, convey an unusual mystical sense’.x Marcelo Legrand Art painter | Montevideo, Uruguay y‘Gabriela Tolomei’s paintings reflect exquisitely her vibrant and joyous character, ingrained to the background and the environment of Latin America, that has been very much part of her life. The rich, visual, fast moving tempo of life there is equally coloured in the music and sounds that integrate with it, and which pervade Gabriela’s major painted statements. She uses the fast and slow tangos, and musical rhythms South America is renowned for, not in a literal sense in her paintings appearances, but as the life enforcing agents that unmistakably bring that fervour of South American passion and the thrill of living, that we in Europe feel enervated by’.x Barry Martin British curator and artist | London, UK 4 TOLOMEI
