White Elephant Museum Makkovik

Labrador Gateway photo

Labrador Gateway Labrador City You can’t miss this sprawling log building on the Nichols-Adam highway (named for two local Olympic gold medal curlers). Inside you can get information about Labrador, twack around for lovely souvenirs in the Labrador Rose Boutique, and tour the Edmund Montague Exhibit Hall to discover the history and culture of Labrador West and the rest of the Big Land.

Built in 1915 to be used as a boarding school run by the Moravian Mission, the building was rarely used for that purpose and so it became known as the “white elephant.” The museum houses more than 200 artifacts – from tools, to books, fishing gear, old photos and more – that showcase the community’s history.

Parks Canada Red Bay National Historic Site Red Bay

Labrador Interpretation Centre North West River Dive deep into the rich culture of Labrador and learn about its people – Innu, Inuit, Southern Inuit and Settlers. The exhibits, which interpret the lifestyles and cultures of past and present, are presented in three languages: English, Inuktitut and Innu-aimun.

The interpretation centre details the rich Basque fishing and whaling history of this region. There is even a “weird and wonderful” exhibit, a collection of staff’s favourite and often odd artifacts, including Norwegian black rat bones recovered from the wreck of the whaling ship San Juan off the coast.

Lord Strathcona House Rigolet Step back in time inside this newly constructed replica of the former home of a Hudson’s Bay Company trading officer. The home is decorated inside with items that might have been common in households in the 1860s.

How to Build a Campfire 1

Gather your tinder. Brought from home, it might include wood shavings, newspapers or dryer lint.

Tip to make your own travel tinder Save your cardboard egg cartons. Cut out each egg cup and keep a lid for each. Stuff it with dryer lint and secure it closed with cotton string.

4 Light the tinder. It will burn fast, and

when the kindling is burning, gradually add larger pieces of firewood. Don’t add it too fast, as the weight of the wood could collapse the teepee too soon and smother the fire.

5 Have a source of water nearby in case of emergency. Watch for flankers (sparks) landing on anything flammable. Don’t lean in over the smoke or get your bare hands too close to the flames (save a sturdy stick to use as a poker). Don’t wear loose clothing or long, untied hair near a fire.

Tip to source tinder in the woods Look for old man’s beard – that light green, webby moss that hangs from evergreens. It makes a great fire starter. Also, strips of birch rind (bark) can help get a fire going.

2

If you’re not using a metal fire pit structure, make a shallow fire pit in dirt or sand; rim it with rocks. Make sure it’s not near grass or bushes or under low hanging trees. Pile a handful of tinder in the centre.

3 Arrange your kindling (small, dry

sticks) in a teepee formation around the tinder. Leave a small opening on the windward side where you can reach in and light the tinder; the air flow will help the fire burn.

24 : explore 2018

6 Only burn clean, dry, untreated wood,

paper or cardboard. Never burn painted or stained wood, glossy paper or household garbage (eg. chip bags, plastic pop bottles etc.).

7 8

Don’t leave a fire unattended. Be sure it is fully out before leaving the area or going to bed. Be mindful and respectful of any campfire bans in your area.

Pet Friendly

Vacations

If you’re like many people, a true “family” vacation these days includes your pets. So here are some things to remember when preparing to take your pets on your next getaway. Travel with a pet carrier that is large enough for your pet to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably in. Line it with a comfortable, absorbent blanket or towel and a favourite toy or two. Including fabrics with your familiar home scent on them will make your pet more comfortable while travelling. Carry pet dishes and enough fresh water and food for the trip, especially if you won’t be stopping at any places where you can purchase supplies. Don’t forget to pack any medicines your pet may be taking and have enough to last all vacation. Always have your pet on leash when not inside the carrier. It’s also a good idea to have your pet micro-chipped or at least put a name tag on your pet’s collar with your mobile contact information so that if the worst happens and your pet gets lost, you’ll have a better chance for a swift and happy reunion.

46 : explore 2018

Pack disinfectant wipes, paper towels and plastic bags for disposal – because accidents do happen. Don’t ever leave pets unattended in a vehicle (except on the Marine Atlantic ferries where it is an acceptable option for crossings and the vehicle won’t be exposed to summer heat). When booking accommodations, explain that you will be travelling with a pet. Two online resources for pet friendly places are PetFriendly.ca and FurFriendlynl.ca (the latter is founded by avid travellers with pets, that features accommodations in Newfoundland and Labrador).

Getting Your

Boat Ready Heading out for a day on the water? Whether you’re hopping into a canoe or revving up the motor boat, there are a few things you should bring along to ensure a safe and enjoyable ride. Here’s a checklist to get you started:

❏ Life-jackets for each person on board ❏ Drinking water ❏ Food (include a few extra snacks) ❏ Compass or GPS and maps in waterproof bag ❏ Cellphone (off and in a Ziploc bag) ❏ Sunglasses ❏ Sunscreen ❏ Hat ❏ Rain gear ❏ An extra warm layer ❏ Extra socks and gloves ❏ First-aid kit

❏ Plastic bags ❏ Rain gear ❏ Emergency towline (at least 10 metres long) ❏ Whistle, mirror and/or flares ❏ Pocketknife or multi-tool ❏ Waterproof matches or lighter ❏ Firestarter (dryer lint works well) ❏ Money ❏ Binoculars ❏ Camera ❏ Headlamp/flashlight and extra batteries ❏ Boater’s Operator Card

Before you launch your boat for the first time this summer, read over this checklist.

❏ Clean the boat inside and out. Wash the exterior with proper fibreglass cleaner; regular household cleaners could scratch the surface. Finish with a coat of wax.

❏ Remove distributor cap, clean it and reinstall it properly.

❏ Inspect the steering system and lubricate where necessary.

❏ Inspect the hull, seats and other vinyl/canvas surfaces for cracks, tears and mildew. Repair and clean surfaces with the proper cleaner.

❏ Replace the gas, change the engine oil and oil/fuel filter, and refill the cooling system.

❏ Examine the fuel line and hoses for cracks. ❏ Reinstall all batteries that you took out for the winter. Make sure they’re fully charged. If necessary, top up battery fluids with distilled water. 48 : explore 2018

❏ Start the engine and make sure it is running smoothly before taking your first trip. Check all the gauges.

❏ Reconnect all electronics that were disconnected over the winter (eg. GPS, radio etc.) and test that they’re working properly.

❏ Make sure all safety equipment (eg. lifejackets, fire extinguisher, first-aid kit, emergency flares etc.) is in good condition and securely stowed. www.exploredownhome.com

Travel Tips from a Touring

Musician Country singer-songwriter Corb Lund has spent years on the road as a professional musician in vans, buses, planes, and pretty much any other way you can get from one place to another with a guitar and a suitcase. In that time, he’s learned a few tricks to make travel easier. During his last visit to Newfoundland and Labrador, between his performances at numerous Arts and Culture Centres across the province, he shared his top travel tips with Downhome. Get a Nexus card. It’s the best $50 I’ve ever spent. You cut all the lines. The worst part of it is that it takes a whole afternoon to fill out the paperwork…it’s a really intensive, interview-like background check. But once you get it, it’s the best.

I have one [carry on] bag with all my personal stuff in it, so that even if all my luggage gets lost, or all my luggage gets left in the van, I can go into the hotel with just that one bag and exist. It has my passport, my earphones, my book that I’m reading. …but then I have another bag that goes in my suitcase that’s backups of everything. I’ve got an extra phone, extra sim card, extra laptop cable, extra passport photocopy, extra everything in a separate bag, so if that [carry on] bag ever goes away or you lose your phone or your charger dies, you’re right back in action.

Eye masks are big for me. I’ve learned to sleep anywhere during a jet takeoff or punk band soundcheck. I can nap anywhere, so that’s important. 64 : explore 2018

They make these things, they’re like a vacuum pack for your dirty clothes. It’s like a really heavy-duty Ziploc bag but it’s got a one-way valve on one end. You roll it up so it pushes all the air out and it’s vacuum packed. All your stuff that’s dirty is just in this one tightly packed bag. If you fly a lot, MEC (Mountain Equipment Co-Op) has these great toiletry bags that are see-through plastic mesh… you just pull it out and put it in the [airport security screening] tray and it’s visible, so they can see it and you don’t have to put it in the plastic bags. Another good travelling tip – if you’re on tour with a band, especially – is that nobody knows in the town that you’re in that you wore the same clothes the last three nights – except for your band. So you can get away with changing clothes a lot less often because nobody knows – if you’re on tour. Tobias Romaniuk

Springdale Heritage Centre Inc. Springdale The old courthouse is now a home of curiosities, including more than 100 framed historic photographs and the largest taxidermy exhibit in the provinces, showcasing more than 60 animals. NL Tourism

Beothuk Interpretation Centre Boyd’s Cove This Provincial Historic Site is a worldclass homage to the province’s extinct Beothuk people. Even on a rainy day, it’s worth venturing outside the centre to walk through the old-growth forest to view the life-size statue of Shanawdithit – the last known Beothuk.

Botwood Heritage Museum & Flying Boat Museum

Twillingate Museum

Botwood Pilot your own tour of early aviation on the site of a former WWII anti-submarine base. In addition to flying boats, exhibits expand to cover other aspects of local history, including a really cool collection of vintage snowmobiles.

Twillingate Explore local history, room by room, in this former Anglican church rectory. Exhibits cover the social, educational and medical history of this community, home of world-famous opera singer Marie Toulinquet.

North Atlantic Aviation Museum Gander For a small town, Gander has played a significant role in world events. It provided a pivotal airport for early transatlantic aviation, supported Allies during WWII, and welcomed the world on 9/11. Learn about all this, and try out the flight simulator, during your visit. 66 : explore 2018

Mind the Weather Newfoundland and Labrador has some of the wildest summer weather, from ranging temperatures to gusty winds and pea-soup thick fog. We also have some colourful folklore regarding our weather.

Cats cleaning behind their ears or wildly racing around (“storming) is a sign of bad weather to come. When distant hills or islands appear close, rain is coming.

Gulls flying at great height Windy weather overnight. The closer the ring to the moon or sun The farther the weather is yet to come.

(When there is a circle around the sun or moon, it means bad weather; how big or small the circle is determines how far away the bad weather is.)

72 : explore 2018

Chimney smoke falling to the ground indicates low air pressure and bad weather in the forecast. Seabirds keeping near to land Tell a storm is near at hand But flying seabirds out of sight You may stay and fish all night.

Dogs sleeping all day is a sign of rain. Rain before seven, fine before eleven.

(Early morning rain often clears by afternoon.)

Campfire

Recipes Here are three meals you can cook over a fire and keep you satisfied morning, noon and night!

Morning Scramble 3 cups potato, 1/4" dice (good use of leftover baked potatoes from the night before) 1 cup ham, diced (or bacon or leftover cooked steak) 3 eggs 1/8 cup milk 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded 1/2 cup green onion, diced 1/2 cup tomato, diced salt & pepper to taste Grease an aluminum pan or camping pan (eg. cast iron). Toss in ham (or bacon or steak). Scramble eggs with milk in a bowl and stir in cheese, onion and tomato. Pour over meat. Season with a dash of salt and pepper. Cover pan with aluminum foil. Cook over medium flame on campfire grill, BBQ or camp stove for about 30 min. Carefully remove foil cover and check on doneness. Cook until the eggs are set and the edges are crispy.

BBQ Chicken Dinner 2 med. potatoes, peeled and diced olive oil salt and pepper 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1/2" slices

Banana Boat S’mores

BBQ sauce

4 medium sized bananas, unpeeled

shredded cheddar cheese

1 cup mini-marshmallows, each cut in half

heavy duty aluminum foil Toss the potatoes with olive oil and salt and pepper. Divide them between two 8"x8" squares of aluminum foil. Gather up the edges of the squares and seal the foil at the top to make packet (leave space between the potatoes and top of the foil tent for steam). Place on hot coals or BBQ grate for about 5 minutes. Remove and carefully open packet. Add chicken to each packet and a few good squirts of BBQ sauce. Reseal packet and return to heat for 20-25 minutes. When chicken is cooked (no traces of pink and easily shredded), and potatoes are tender, top with shredded cheese before serving. Eat right from the packet.

1/2 cup mini dark chocolate chips 1/4 cup graham wafer crumbs Set each banana on a piece of foil large enough to wrap it; place banana curved side down so it sits up like a boat. Split the banana in half lengthways, all the way down to the skin, but not through the skin. Pry the banana open and fill it with chocolate chips and marshmallows, topping with the graham crumbs. Fold the foil up around the banana and seal it shut. Lay the banana right side up, like a boat, on hot coals or a cooking grill and cook for about 20 minutes. Carefully open the tinfoil to check. Bananas are ready when the marshmallows and chocolate are melted inside.
