I’m always reminded of the uniqueness of this place and its people when greeted by a first-time visitor to this province. Those experiencing their maiden touchdown to Newfoundland and Labrador often remark on the scenic beauty of our rugged, windswept landscapes, the endearing home-grown hospitality of our residents, and the rich and irreplicable culture that permeates through the cracks and corners of our island.

Maybe absence makes the heart grow fonder, or those immersed in the constant of what we have are numb to the total culture shock in comparison to metropolitan Ontario or Prairie Saskatchewan, but sometimes it’s nice to see Newfoundland through the virgin eyes of a first-timer.

Downhome proudly presents our annual Explore travel guide, our dedicated what, where and when directory of all things Newfoundland and Labrador. From must-see attractions to accommodations for all sorts and all the need-toknows in between, Explore is Newfoundland and Labrador proudly on display. From festivals and events to bucket list landmarks and fantastic facts for both the seasoned livyer and eager come from away, we hope your exploration of what we have gives you a fine glimpse into who we are.

THINGS TO DO in Labrador 5FREE

timeless tips

1 Cheer on rowers at the Labrador West Regatta in Wabush at Jean Lake on July 26. This must-see event features a highly competitive series of 20 Olympic-style races.

2 Fill your bucket (or your boots, as they say) with wild berries found on the hills and barrens. The bakeapple is a favourite in Labrador.

4 Walk in the steps of archaeologists on the Jersey Trail in L’Anse au Clair. The paths lead to foundations of former fishing rooms and the gravesites of early residents.

5 The Boney Shore Trail in Red Bay is named for the weather-beaten whale bones on the landwash, reminders of the whaling industry of the 16th century. Whales and icebergs may be spotted offshore.

3 Use your GPS to find some of the geocaches hidden in areas of Labrador (look them up at www.geocaching.com). It’s a great excuse to explore new paths.

Opened in 2009, the Green Moose Interpretation Centre explores the complex and changing inter-relationships between people and the land. Decades of logging around Roddickton, Newfoundland have created an unexpected result: the perfect moose habitat. Roddickton (the “Moose Capital of the World”) now has the largest density of moose in North America. A nuisance to some, moose (an introduced species) are now woven into our way of life and may even prove to be the key to our future. Come and see our moose and polar bear!

NL Camping Tips and Etiquette

With more than 30 provincial parks throughout the province (with 13 offering overnight camping), there’s a wide variety of attractive options to stay both off the beaten path and in tourist-friendly areas. The first step to successful camping is knowing when and where to go, but proper camping etiquette is key to a successful outing. Parks Canada shared some simple and effective tips to maximize your experience while leaving the location better than when you found it.

Respect the posted speed limits and remain alert while driving. Trees may obstruct your view and you should expect pedestrians (including children) and sometimes wildlife on the road.

Use roadways and pathways to travel to and from campground facilities (cook shelters, bathrooms, etc.). Cutting through a neighbouring campsite will disturb other campers and may cause damage to fragile vegetation.

Follow “Pack In, Pack Out” rules. If you bring garbage into the backcountry (food wrappers, beverage containers, etc.) you must carry it back out when you leave.

Throw your recyclables and trash into marked bins. Help keep the park clean.

Keep noise to a reasonable volume. Excessive noise is prohibited at any time of day. Respect other campers’ tranquillity and campground quiet hours.

Keep your pet on a leash. This rule applies at all times.

Keep your campsite clean. Avoid attracting bears and other wildlife by keeping a ‘bare’ campsite.

Use a personal basin to wash dishes on your campsite. Do not use the bathrooms or potable water taps.

Use your own tub to wash laundry. Dump water down the outdoor sink, not inside bathrooms where space is limited.

Visit parkscanada.ca for camping reservations province-wide and for a detailed list of camp-sites, park listings, key information and much more.

Build your own First-Aid Kit

timeless tips

To help you prepare for a safe summer, here is a list of basic tools that should just fill a first-aid kit you can easily fit into your backpack, tent, camper or even canoe, so you should never be caught without at least basic medical aid.

Bandages No two wounds are alike, so pack every size and shape of bandage: triangular, round, square, rectangular, as well as large, medium, and small.

Tweezers Use tweezers to remove splinters, glass shards, stingers and anything too tiny for fingernails to grasp.

Disinfectant Disinfectant is available in several forms, including gel and liquid. Gels can be rubbed right onto the wound or onto the bandage before covering the wound.

Gauze More absorbent and less expensive than a pack of bandages, gauze is especially useful for a bleeding wound that needs frequent bandage changes.

Scissors Needed to cut gauze and bandages to the proper size, and to cut away clothing covering a wound.

Alcohol Swabs Commonly used to clean dirt and grime away from fresh wounds, these swabs are pre-coated in alcohol, which allows them to clean the wound efficiently.

Safety Pins In addition to holding together ripped clothing, they can keep a tensor bandage snug around an injured area and secure makeshift bandages.

Calamine Lotion Immediately calms the pain and discomfort of a sunburn and poison ivy rash.

First-aid Booklet A small first-aid booklet could be a lifesaver when an emergency arises and you need to know what to do.

Car Games for Kids

I Spy

One person chooses an item from inside the car or along the roadside and uses the special phrase as a hint:

“I spy with my little eye something that _____.” (eg. “is blue” or “starts with the letter C” or “rhymes with ____”)

The other people in the car take turns guessing what it is. Then someone else takes a turn choosing an item.

Highway Scavenger Hunt

Give the kids this list of things to look for on their trip and they can check them off when they’ve seen them. They can even add where and when the item was seen. Not only will it occupy them with the scenery, it will also help them keep track of memories made for their trip journal.

o moose

o campervan

o police car with lights flashing

o bicyclists

o motorcycle convoy

o rabbit

o roadside fruit/vegetable stand

o railway bridge

o waterfall

o beaver dam

o ATV rider

o names painted on rock face

Bumper Bingo

Make a list of provinces and states (you don’t have to list them all, just a selection of, say, 6 or 10). The first one to spot licence plates from all the places listed wins.

Arnold’s Cove

709-463-2323 admin@townofarnoldscove.ca www.townofarnoldscove.com

During WWII Arnold’s Cove became part of the huge defence system in Newfoundland and Labrador. The American military arrived in 1941, and they set up anti-aircraft units and watch towers at this point. Today at this site you will discover an updated walking trail, the parking lot and entrance are located at the end of Peach Street and the trail will take you along the coast to High Head, with beautiful views of Placentia Bay and the islands beyond.

timeless tips Ways to a Better Trip with Pets

Travelling with an animal can be fun, exciting and a great chance to spend quality time together, if it all goes well. Just as you require time and planning for a road trip, so does your pet. Here are some suggestions to ensure a safe and happy trip.

Keep pet tags up-to-date

A pet’s tag with your home phone number on it will do little good if you’re away on vacation with your pet. Write a local number you can be reached at on a piece of masking tape and tape it over your pet’s permanent tag.

Pets need toys, too

Pack the vehicle with a couple of your pet’s favourite toys. Just like it works on the kids, it will calm and entertain pets, distracting them from the unfamiliar environment.

www.exploredownhome.com 84 : explore 2024
10

Fasten their seatbelt

If the driver has to suddenly slam on the brakes, a pet could be thrown about in the vehicle. To keep your pet safe, buy a harness that attaches to the seatbelt. Another alternative is a carrier in the back if you have a suitable vehicle. The carrier should be large enough that your pet can stand up inside and turn around easily.

Dealing with motion sickness

It’s best not to leave while your pet has a full stomach, and if your pet is hungry during the drive, feed it small bits of food – enough to satisfy hunger but not enough to cause an upset stomach. (Some vets recommend a half-dose of children’s Gravol, but check with your vet to make sure it’s safe.)

Let them stretch their four legs

Plan rest stops so your pet can stretch out, burn off any pent-up energy and get a bathroom break.

Roadside assistance for your pet

Know where the local veterinary offices are where you are travelling, in case of emergencies.

Tuck them in

Have a blanket handy to keep your pet warm if the weather turns chilly. Bringing the pet’s blanket from home, with its scent on it, will also comfort your pet during travel.

Avoid those window woes

It’s extremely dangerous for animals to ride the highway with their faces to the wind, as bugs and debris can become lodged in their eyes, nose and mouth and cause permanent damage. For safety, minimize the amount of time your pet spends with its head out the window.

Introduce

joy rides

If your pet only associates car rides with going to the vet, they will want to avoid getting inside a vehicle. Before your road trip, go for frequent fun drives with your pet to get it used to being in the vehicle.

Don’t forget the water

Always carry a supply of fresh water and a bowl or other delivery system for the road. It’s important to keep them hydrated.

A Bold Journey My Indian

Let’s Roll Capelin Weather

Kate is eager for summer to begin, but her plans are squelched by relentless rain, drizzle, and fog. Lori Doody’s charming picture book is a celebration of Newfoundland’s weather and the small silvery fish whose arrival is said to signal the return of summer and good weather to the island’s shores.

Miawpukek Chief Mi’sel Joe and Sheila O’Neill reclaim the story of Sylvester Joe –the Mi’kmaq guide engaged by explorer William Cormack in the 1800s to lead a trek across Newfoundland. Will Sylvester Joe lead Cormack to the last remaining Beothuk camps on the island, or will he lead his colonial traveller away?

Chilling Tale Borrowed Black

This classic spooky tale written by Ellen Bryan Obed and illustrated in moody watercolours by Jan Mogensen tells the mysterious story of a shadowy creature who lives on the coast of Labrador. timeless tips Highway Safety Tips

If you’re driving a rental vehicle, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with its features before driving away. Be sure you know how the headlights, windshield wipers and other safety equipment work, and preprogram the radio stations or load-up a playlist before you hit the road so you won’t be distracted trying to find tunes while driving.

Since April 2003, it has been illegal in Newfoundland and Labrador to talk or text on your cellphone while driving. If you must take or make a call, always use a hands-free bluetooth system.

There is a “Move Over” Law in effect in N.L., whereby drivers are required to slow down and pull into an outside lane, if safe and clear to do so, and create as much room as possible when passing any police officer, first responder or highway crew with flashing lights that is stopped in a lane or on the side of the road. This action creates a safe buffer for them to do their job.

If a stinging insect flies into your car, do not panic. Calmly pull off the road and deal with it.

Slow down in rainy conditions. Standing water, particularly in ruts in the pavement, can cause a vehicle to quickly lose traction. If your vehicle skids out of control, steer in the direction of the skid.

Turn on your headlights in fog. Use low beam; high beam makes visibility worse. Turning your headlights on also activates your tail lights, so that other drivers can see you up ahead.

If you have a tire blowout, keep a firm grip on the steering wheel and allow your vehicle to coast to a stop, then try to get your vehicle out of the traffic lane and onto the roadside. Use your emergency flashers.

Do not tailgate large trucks. General rule: if you can’t see the driver’s side mirror, that driver cannot see you. You are in the blind spot, which can be hazardous if you pull out to pass.

Everyone in the vehicle should be wearing a seatbelt, and children under 9 (and/or under 4' 9") should be in a booster seat or car seat. Children should never ride in the front seat.

Forest Fire Prevention

timeless

Starry summer nights are made all the brighter with a crackling campfire. But even a small fire can get out of control. About 55% of all forest fires in Canada are caused by human activity. In Newfoundland and Labrador, there are an average of 118 fires a year, most of them in the hottest, driest summer months. While we can’t prevent every forest fire, there are things we can do to reduce the risk.

Contain your campfire in a proper firepit, backyard chimenea or designated area ringed with stones/bricks and at least 3.5 m from any bushes, trees or buildings.

Do not have a fire in windy conditions.

Do not light campfires in areas identified as high/extreme risk for forest fires (watch for public service bulletins and roadside billboards about current risk).

Always have enough water nearby to quickly douse a fire.

Never leave your campfire unattended.

When you’re done, make sure the fire is completely out by dousing remaining embers with water or covering them with dirt. Stir the coals to be sure they’re cold.

Make sure BBQ coals are cold before disposing of them.

Do not toss lit cigarettes on the ground.

Do not toss glass bottles or break glass in grassy or wooded areas (do not litter in general).

ATVs and other off-roading vehicles should have a muffler and a device to keep sparks and burnt carbon from escaping. These vehicles can get very hot and can ignite very dry grass as they travel over it.

Getting Your Boat Ready

Before you launch your boat for the first time this summer, read over this checklist.

❏ Clean the boat inside and out. Wash the exterior with proper fibreglass cleaner; regular household cleaners could scratch the surface. Finish with a coat of wax.

❏ Inspect the hull, seats and other vinyl/canvas surfaces for cracks, tears and mildew. Repair and clean surfaces with the proper cleaner.

❏ Replace the gas, change the engine oil and oil/fuel filter, and refill the cooling system.

❏ Examine the fuel line and hoses for cracks.

❏ Reinstall all batteries that you took out for the winter. Make sure they’re fully charged. If necessary, top up battery fluids with distilled water.

❏ Remove distributor cap, clean it and reinstall it properly.

❏ Inspect the steering system and lubricate where necessary.

❏ Start the engine and make sure it is running smoothly before taking your first trip. Check all the gauges.

❏ Reconnect all electronics that were disconnected over the winter (eg. GPS, radio etc.) and test that they’re working properly.

❏ Make sure all safety equipment (eg. life-jackets, fire extinguisher, first-aid kit, emergency flares etc.) is in good condition and securely stowed.
