I grew up knowing Twillingate summers,
playing on the beaches, climbing hills, swimming in the ocean and the ponds, and thoroughly enjoying the Fish, Fun and Folk Festival. All our family vacations, except one, took place in Newfoundland and Labrador. We camped in nearly every provincial park between Barachois Pond and Butter Pot. I played Spotlight in Terra Nova, swam in Square Pond, carried away buckets of pretty rocks from Kona Beach, and made sand castles at Windmill Bight. As an adult, I still love visiting new and rediscovered places in Newfoundland and Labrador. I’ve taken up kayaking and relearned biking as new ways to explore. While Twillingate calls me home every summer, my honeymoon was spent camping and hiking in Gros Morne. Some surprise gems I’ve found include the Newfoundland Insectarium in Reidville, the Beothuk Interpretation Centre in Boyd’s Cove, Castle Hill at Placentia, and the Manuels River trail system right where I live now in Conception Bay South. This is my umpteenth year working on our Explore Guide, and every time it gets me so excited for the upcoming season. I’m reminded of all the beautiful places to visit and exciting things to do, and I start making summer vacation plans – everything from an afternoon adventure to a week-long, fun-filled experience. I hope this guide does this for you, too. We’ve done our best to make this guide as up-to-date as possible. Because of the pandemic, plans are sometimes fluid. Tourism operators have been working very hard to be flexible, to create safe spaces and still deliver quality experiences. Please be kind and understanding, follow local health and safety guidelines, call ahead to confirm bookings, and have an awesome summer in Newfoundland and Labrador. MARITIME ARCHAIC BURIAL MOUND NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE OF CANADA L’Anse Amour 709-927-5825 www.seethesites.ca info@seethesites.ca This plaque site of National Historic Significance overlooking the waters of the Strait of Belle Isle marks the burial site of a young Maritime Archaic child who died about 8,000 years ago. Various artifacts were also discovered at the site including a walrus tusk, harpoon head, painted stones and a bone whistle. An exhibit about the site is displayed at the Labrador Straits Museum at L’Anse au Loup.

It is a mounted skeleton of a full-sized North Atlantic right whale, retrieved from the bottom of the bay. The storyboards tell the journey of the whales, their migration, eating and reproduction patterns. The boards also tell of the dangers they faced in the past and the dangers they face today. The North Atlantic Right Whale is unique and in need of protection from extinction. Come see for yourself!

How to Pick a Road Trip Buddy When you imagine roaring down the open road, exploring new places and seeing new things, who’s riding along with you? We put together this little Q&A of pertinent questions to ask each other when picking a road trip buddy.
What’s your favourite style of driving music? If they say country and you’re into Broadway musical soundtracks, someone should pack ear buds.
Do you like to sing along? If you do, too, then it could be a karaoke good time. If they ruin every song ever made, it could be a painful ride.
What are your favourite snack foods? This is important for long road trips. Imagine sitting in a vehicle cabin with unwelcome smells, loud crunching and lip-smacking, or having the car messed up with sticky liquids and crumb dust. On the flip side, if they bring “the good snacks,” you can negotiate a share.
Do you know left from right? Lots of people commonly mix up left and right, and that can lead to lots of confusion on the road. Not a big issue with a passenger, but if it’s your navigator there’s gonna be a lot of “Take the next left… No, not your left, my left!”
Can you read a map or use a GPS? Things can get tense if you lose your way. It’d be helpful if one of you could master direction.

Have you ever changed a tire? Ability to change a tire or do any other minor roadside repair can raise a road trip buddy’s profile instantly.
Do you have a valid driver’s licence and insurance? It’s always good to have more than one qualified driver on a road trip. If one gets tired or injured, there’s a spare to carry on.
Do you get motion sickness? Why would someone who gets car sick want to go on a road trip? Who knows? But it’s better to find out early and pack Gravol.
Do you take your shoes off in the vehicle? You’re going to want to weed this one out early.
Are you a back seat / passenger seat driver? Few things suck the fun out of a road trip more than a passenger constantly pressing their imaginary breaks, “helpfully” pointing out speed signs, and randomly asking you questions from the driver’s test “for fun.” (On the other hand, if they only do that in the car with you, you might want to take the hint.)

The burning in your quads, the sweat trick-

It’s a moderate 2.3-km woodsy trek to the site of a 1953 plane crash that killed all 23 crew members. The wreckage is a sobering sight and an information plaque explains what happened here.

Glowing red embers rise above the swirling smoke, disappearing into the inky night and replaced by twinkling white lights of the celestial dome overhead. Though they are unseen dark shapes against a dark sky, the treetops make their presence known as they rustle in the welcome breeze of a warm summer night. The rising moon shines on the lake, and just beyond its beam a loon calls. Another replies. The strains of a distant guitar and the chorus of tipsy singers travel through the woods, though not loud enough to drown out the crackle of the small fire or break the trance brought on by flickering flames of yellow, blue and red. The air smells of pine, spruce, grass and dirt – but also of charred wood, BBQ sauce and marshmallows. It’s the perfect end to the perfect day of a camping vacation. As the final embers die down and the last of

the day’s energy is spent, you drag yourself to bed. Where you turn in to get the perfect night’s sleep can be an adventure in itself. First-time campers generally start out in a tent, communing with Mother Earth in a sleeping bag on a soft pad. The only thing more back to nature than that would be in a hammock under a tree. (Though in Newfoundland and Labrador, with its cooler nights and unpredictable weather, some shelter is always better than none.) People more committed to camping vacations will usually invest in some kind of camper, from a tow-along hardtop to a fully equipped motorhome, Wi-Fi and satellite included. Continued on page 60

No matter the shelter, as long as it’s portable it can be set up almost anywhere. There are beautifully designed campgrounds with various amenities for comfort and activities located all over Newfoundland and in Labrador. Not only are they attractive destinations, but they also make economical and convenient bases for touring regions of the province. For the really adventurous, set up camp wherever you stop for the night – even near the side of the highway, or what Newfoundlanders and Labradorians call “gravel pit camping.” If you want to go camping but don’t own any gear and aren’t that outdoorsy, or you just want to have a really cool experience, give “glamping” a go. Glamping is basically glamourous camping, where the shelter is fancy. There are several places
in this province where you can rent a tent or a yurt that is outfitted with a comfy bed, fancy linens and pillows, and mood lighting, like a hotel room under the stars. In our National Parks, there are even furnished A-framed cabins and teardropshaped treehouses you can rent for the night. When morning comes, and the early light filters through the trees, take the time to savour that steaming cup of coffee or tea. Breathe deeply that fresh, dewy air. With the sizzle of the bacon and the crack of the eggshells, soon you’ll tuck into the best breakfast known to humans. Nothing beats the smell and taste of food cooked outdoors. Another perfect start to another perfect day of camping in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The droplet of cool water is welcome on your
skin as it drips from the paddle arching overhead before dipping back down into the sea. The sun is warm on your face, and the only things casting shadows are the passing seabirds and towering coastline. The air is salty and you don’t need a shell to hear the ocean. The sea moves beneath you, jostling you slightly like a mom gently bouncing a baby on her knee. In a kayak you don’t just ride on the water, you travel with it. The connection with the ocean from the shell of a kayak is palpable. Newfoundland and Labrador has thousands of kilometres of craggy coastline broken by harbours and coves from which to launch a kayak. Looking out to sea, there could be icebergs, sea birds, schools of fish,
porpoises, jellyfish, turtles, belugas and other whales on the horizon – all sorts of chance encounters. Looking back to shore, there are grassy headlands, clifftop lighthouses, busy harbours, idyllic coves, sea stacks and caves – views that you’ll never get from dry land. The stillness of really early morning or late evening can lead to some unforgettable moments, when the sea is like liquid mercury and the sky is a painter’s canvas.

While boating has been a part of the Newfoundland and Labrador scene since the earliest Indigenous peoples fished and travelled the waterways, recreational paddling is a newer activity. There are a lot more kayaks on the highways these days, strapped to the roofs of everything from small cars to motorhomes. It’s a generally affordable watersport and easy to learn. It provides a “go at your own pace” adventure and you can do it anywhere with water access. If you don’t have your own equipment, there are a number of tour companies in several vacation hotspots that would be glad to take you out for a paddle. On the Avalon Peninsula you might find yourself exploring the cliffs of Bell Island or the waterfalls and caves on the Southern Shore. You can admire the shoreline view of historic Trinity during a trip to this charming Bonavista Peninsula town. Paddle past icebergs, migrating whales and osprey nests in Central Newfoundland. On the west coast, Bonne Bay proves itself a jewel of Gros Morne National Park when explored from a kayak. And in Labrador, adventure awaits along routes travelled for millennia by the Indigenous people of the north. If you go prepared with all the right sporting and safety equipment, emergency supplies, snacks and a waterproof camera, you can have no better summer experience than kayaking (unless you’re a landlubber!).

Getting Your Boat Ready Before you launch your boat for the first time this summer, read over this checklist.
❏ Clean the boat inside and out. Wash the exterior with proper fibreglass cleaner; regular household cleaners could scratch the surface. Finish with a coat of wax.
❏ Remove distributor cap, clean it and reinstall it properly.
❏ Inspect the steering system and lubricate where necessary.
❏ Inspect the hull, seats and other vinyl/canvas surfaces for cracks, tears and mildew. Repair and clean surfaces with the proper cleaner.
❏ Replace the gas, change the engine oil and oil/fuel filter, and refill the cooling system.
❏ Examine the fuel line and hoses for cracks. ❏ Reinstall all batteries that you took out for the winter. Make sure they’re fully charged. If necessary, top up battery fluids with distilled water.

❏ Start the engine and make sure it is running smoothly before taking your first trip. Check all the gauges.
❏ Reconnect all electronics that were disconnected over the winter (eg. GPS, radio etc.) and test that they’re working properly.
