Jim Byrnes PERFORMS at EX NIHILO VINEYARDS Jim Byrnes was born in St. Louis, Missouri – that’s blues country. He grew up on the city’s north side. One of the neighbourhood bars had Ike and Tina Turner as the house band. As a teenager going to music clubs, he and his buddy were often the only white people in the place. “We never had any problems. We were too naïve, and had too much respect for the music and culture – they knew it, they could tell.” By age thirteen, Jim was singing and playing blues guitar. His first professional gig was in 1964. Over the years, he has had the great good fortune to appear with a virtual who’s who of the blues. From Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker to Taj Mahal and Robert Cray, Jim has been on the blues highway for 45 years.

Byrnes moved to Vancouver, BC in the mid-70s after years of drifting, working odd jobs and playing music. In 1981 he put together a band that became a staple of the local music scene. In 1986 the Jim Byrnes Band played 300 nights. Jim Byrnes’ fame as an actor has grown immeasurably from his too-numerous-to-mention TV and movie roles, highlights including television’s Wiseguy and Highlander series, and his national variety show The Jim Byrnes Show. Jim has proven that a serious car accident in 1972 has done anything but hinder him. Despite two swipes with death and some pretty hard knocks, Byrnes has still managed to rack up an enviable string of credits, both on and off-screen.

The Okanagan‌
Creator of Unforgettable Memories As much of The Okanagan continues to grow up there are still a whole lot of vineyards, orchards and untouched green spaces that appeal to visitor and newcomers as much as the modern conveniences of a moderately sized cities.
all the vineyards, orchards and hiking/biking trails. The beauty is, the deeper you go, the less likely you are to see people and more likely to see more of nature!
It is often said that the best season in the Okanagan is year round! But, it is easy to understand that in a climate that is so hot and dry that summertime rules! Outdoor living is king in this part of the world. So, you best get to the beach or get on a boat or fire golf balls down a fairway. The weather is prime for at least seven months of the year. So in this magnificently large window of opportunity, people like to spend as much time as possible outside. If you are looking for bustling beach activity, head to Gyro Beach. Volleyball, Bocce Ball, Frisbee and slack rope are activities that you will likely see and experience. If you are in search of peace and quite, then this likely is not the spot for you. Good news, you’re in luck. There are many (and I mean many) much smaller public beach accesses to the water along the entire length of the lakeshore. Of course beach culture is not for everyone, and that means you are more in the mood for an adventure and exploring your surroundings.
Although this valley is famous for long, hot summers, it is slowly gaining traction as a winter playground too. For the most part winters in the region are pretty mild, certainly compared to the rest of Canada. Within an hours drive of almost every city/town in the region, there is a ski/snowboard resort. Winter sports are like planting crops, you live and die by the weather. Some years you have a banner crop, and some years you just don’t! This part of the world is no different. In the North Okanagan near Vernon is Silver Star Mountain Resort, renowned for dry Okanagan powder, an incredible terrain park with features for everyone and a great, colourful village. They operate year-round, offering downhill mountain biking and a bike park too! Big White is centrally located in the area, just 45 minutes north east of Kelowna. They too benefit from cold, dry snow, several family oriented activities aside from skiing and snowboarding and play host to many local, provincial, national and international events. A quick thirty minutes outside of Penticton is Apex Resort, a full service destination resort known for light snow, friendly people and great terrain. Whether you like cruising the groomed runs, slashing through the trees or taking flight in the terrain
For the most part the Okanagan Valley runs North/South. So for the adventurer, head East or West and that will bring you into the more rural parts of the valley, where you can find fishing lodges, pristine wilderness lakes and campsites. If you are like many people and require more adventure than just sitting in the sand, it is easy to just wonder into the hillsides and discover

park, with so much variety there is something for every skill and age level. There are many other choices for winter adventures as well. Ice fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, ice climbing and cross country skiing are all popular and easy when Mother Nature offers such an elaborate and extensive playground! The Okanagan is not just limited to adventure, lifestyle and agriculture, it also accommodates a wide variety or traditional sports too. The weather often dictates what you do and when, but when the weather cooperates, it is mostly sunny and you can do whatever you want, whenever you want. That’s the Okanagan way. Soccer (which seems to be the most popular sport in the world), tennis, golf, cycling, volleyball, softball and football, from organized leagues to weekend fun, there are enough fields, courts and courses for everyone visiting or living in the Okanagan. And, if it is too windy to participate in these sports, head down to Rotary Beach on Lakeshore Rd. and watch the multicoloured kite boarders dance through the air and across the water in choreographed chaos.
expanding hospital, International airport and regional roadways. What was once considered the outskirts of town is now being fully incorporated into a bigger scene. The upside to all this is that we are better positioned to welcome residents and visitors alike to a more modern, updated and efficient environment. As things continue to evolve, the charm of the valley remains the same. As city infrastructure and community development continues to march forward, the Okanagan will always have it’s magical mountain backdrops, flawless fresh water lakes and continuous hot summer days‌ forever! There are four main bodies of water as you travel from North to South in the Okanagan Valley, and literally hundreds of smaller ones too. Vernon is lucky enough to have shoreline on two lakes, Okanagan Lake, the largest body of water in the region and

Kalamalka Lake, the most colourful body of water in the region. What makes this lake so unique is the crystal clear azure blue waters. This gives such a tropical feel. If you can’t get out in a boat, at least make the effort to get to the shore, it is such a wonderful experience and you will not be disappointed. Okanagan Lake runs from Vernon in the North all the way down to Penticton in the South. There is only one bridge, The W.R. Bennett Bridge which spans Okanagan Lake. It is centrally located in Kelowna at the narrowest point in the lake. It is not only a long lake, but a very deep lake as well, with some spots deeper than 1000 feet. It is rumoured that they have never actually found the bottom of Okanagan Lake, opening the door for legendary stories of Ogopogo, an entirely different topic that you should explore on your own! Okanagan Lake funnels into Skaha Lake via the Penticton Channel. For a relaxing afternoon, grab an inner tube, some sunscreen, a floating cooler and cruise down the channel with a bunch of your closest friends. If you are not a “floater”, take the time to see the canal with your own eyes on a sunny long weekend day in the summer, you will be caught off guard by how many people are actually doing this.

Skaha Lake is a little smaller than Okanagan & Kalamalka Lakes and comes to a halt at Okanagan Falls. The final body of water on the list is Osoyoos Lake, which heads South from the town of Osoyoos and makes it way across the border and into the U.S.. It is not uncommon to hear stories of locals starting their day in Osoyoos, visiting a winery and jumping into Canadas warmest lake. Then the start to head north, visit another winery and jump into Skaha Lake. One more winery and you find yourself in Okanagan Lake. Finally the tropical waters of Kalamalka Lake are followed by a delightful treat from a local distillery. From the North Okanagan down to the border in the south, the roadsides and lakesides have little communities that each have a charm of their own. North of Kelowna there is an area sandwiched between Okanagan Lake and Kalamalka Lake named Lake Country, aptly titled considering its surroundings. The two business communities are Winfield and Oyama, both are full service towns with fuel, food, hotels and marinas, while Carrs Landing and Okanagan Centre are the other two that make

up Lake Country. They are more rural with homes, cottages, picnic areas and waterfront parks. After crossing the bridge in Kelowna and starting to head south you come to Peachland and Summerland. Peachland is an adorable lakeside community that has pebble beaches stretching the entire length of the town, the best Sunday walk in the area. With big developments in the hills above the town site, Peachland has some of the best views in the valley too. Summerland has an olde English charm, as well as a fantastic waterfront, with resorts, parks, beaches and restaurants. As you wind your way along the highway you encounter such gems as Okanagan Falls and Oliver. This region is on the northern tip of the Sonoran Desert and these moisture rich soils are famous for some amazing wines. The hills are covered with scrub brush and ponderosa pines. Like the entire South Okanagan, daytime temperatures in summer are consistently in the mid 30’s. If you are interested in learning about and tasting amazing vintages, you will enjoy the “Wine Capital of Canada”. This just goes to show you that The Okanagan is so much more than just ski resorts, wineries, beaches and golf courses! The pace
of life here can be as hurried as you want it to be or as relaxed as you need it to be. That is just one of the wonders of living (or visiting) this region. You can shop downtown and in 30 minutes be so remote enjoying absolute outdoor freedom! So now it is up to you. Are you excited at the prospect of trying something new… or are you more comfortable with keeping things a little more conventional. As The Okanagan matures, some things will inevitably change, for most people things will be constantly getting better, for some they enjoy the slower pace of life. So as things develop and improve closer to the city and won sites, the peripheral areas will stay untouched by time, which is just fine for many people. The old adage goes, the more things change… the more they stay the same! And that certainly applies here. It is the perfect marriage, the old Okanagan will stay old and the new Okanagan will progress move forward. The Okanagan Is More Than Just Stunning Sunsets. The Okanagan Valley really is at the intersection of modern and traditional… and flourishing in every aspect!

FAST CARS FLYING HIGH Cruising The Okanagan in Utmost Style by Land, Sea and Air There are two expressions that have always stuck with me since I was a little boy. Life is a journey… enjoy the ride. And, you don’t get into these cars, you put them on! These two sayings could not be more perfectly suited for Kelowna Exotic Car Tours and Rentals. First things first., you will need to decided if you want drive all five super cars on a tour or just rent one machine and enjoy it for a few hours. Decisions, decisions… I think that the tour is best suited for most people because it allows you to enjoy a variety of exotic cars (which change from time to time) but for now include an Audi R8, a Corvette Grand Sport, an Aston Martin (convertible of course!) a Porsche and a Ferrari. masterpieces of horsepower, tail pipes and sleek lines. Your first smile of the day will come when you turn that key (or press the button) that fires this beast to life. That initial roar and the vehicle vibrates as you are belted tight into the luxurious leather seat. Now you are out on the open road, headed to Ex Nihilo Vineyard for a rare chef inspired lunch. You can’t believe that you are driving any one of these roadsters and can’t wait to drive the next one too. As the day progresses, so do the good times. At every stop you are filled with excitement and enthusiasm and want to discuss how great the car you were driving handles and how much power it has, so much fun your cheeks are hurting! Not only in this a fantastic experience for the driver, but this is also a great experience for a passenger. The perfect day could include your wife, mother, son or uncle riding shotgun! As most tours wander through wine country the passenger can also enjoy the local wines that all these places are famous for. But, none for the driver‌ No problem though, because adrenaline in way stronger than wine! If you have a specific idea of where you would like to tour these vehicles around, Dara-Lynn Nordquist can make all of these packages very customizable. Seems like it might be the best day ever! Imagine rumbling down the highway in one of these supercars on moment and then taking off in a helicopter in the next moment. Needless to say‌ there will be more smiles and excitement.
For now the cars are parked, and find yourself standing near the heli-pad at Valhalla Helicopters in West Kelowna (which is experiencing a massive expansion) and you get the feeling that they take great pride in their operation. so well established and respected in the Okanagan community and beyond. Your eyes scan the horizon and sky above. This will be your ride for the day! Whether it is your 1st time or 101st time getting into a helicopter, you will be buzzing with anticipation. As the machine begins to lift off you are overwhelmed with that unnatural feeling of flight! Look, left, look right, everybody around has a big smile on their face. Fun is in fact the name of the game. And cruising in a helicopter takes that feeling to new heights, literally! The pilot rolls the machine left, then rolls it back to the right, you are gleaming with joy and loudly expressing yourself over the headsets shared with the other passengers. The excitement stays with you throughout the day, in fact the memory doesn’t go away at all. Your action packed day so far has seen you roll past marinas in the fast cars, fly over marinas in the helicopter. So, there is only on thing left to do, get yourself to the marina for this last chapter of this amusement. As you first lay eyes the this battleship grey aquatic masterpiece your sense heighten once again, for the third time! This meticulously designed power house allows you the ability to do many things, over a wide spectrum… from hauling butt across the top of the water to bobbing up and down in the waves utilizing all the luxurious features that this gem has to offer. says lets go “yachting” and this magnificent Cruisers Yacht 338 South Beach Edition pulls up to the dock. There is a time and a place for Bob’s tin fishing boat… but today we are going yachting!! Talk about a thrill, right from the second the Twin 380 HP engines froth the water at the stern of the boat. There is always a mystery of what lies beneath, well here its nothing but power! There has always been an attraction for man to go fast. On land, in a car, through the air, in a helicopter and on the water aboard this pimped out cabin cruiser. On a fancy boat there are many options, each one more exciting than the last. If you want sun, stretch out in the bow or across the back and start the tanning machine! If you are looking for a mini condo on the water then you are in luck. Comfort and style, every detail is just perfect.
Travelling down the lake at top speed is a totally different feeling on water, for some reason everything feels faster. If you are travelling at 90 km/h on the highway and you will probably get run off the road for driving so slow, but 90km/h on the water, well that is a whole different story altogether. The loud crack as the hull slices through the waves and that distinct “thump” a boat makes when it comes back down into the water, I assure you that everybody on board has a big grin on their faces as the watery adventure continues for the entire day! All that excitement, and that was just as a passenger, image being the pilot of this floating masterpiece!

Now the captain decides that you should shift from a mellow cruising speed, to warp speed and that happens quickly as he drives both throttles forward pushing you back into your deep sumptuous seat.
Your take away from all this should be that people seem to want to go fast (in a responsible sort of fashion) but most people seem to want to have fun. Fun is the name of the game, whatever makes you smile, whatever makes you happy, that is what you should really be pursuing. Have an experience that you would consider to be an Absolute Thrill, by land, sea or air! The experience of flying in a helicopter or driving a supercar or thrashing down the lake will stay with you forever. And remember, Life is a Journey… Enjoy the Ride.

A Private cooking classs with storied chef ROD BUTTERS Rod Butters continues to have a storied career that has seen him hold positions at established and well respected restaurants from sea to shining sea. In the middle of his illustrious pursuit for the perfect taste, he took a year to travel the globe. In this industry it is important to stay relevant, test new techniques and try new flavours. Going outside of your comfort zone allows to broaden your horizons and develop your game. You can just imagine the culinary experiences he enjoyed and surely has transformed some of that wisdom into his everyday cooking style.
It is natural to want to share your skill and practice with others. And there is no better vehicle to do this than with a private cooking class and a 270 page, 80 recipe cookbook. Armed with enough cooking expertise to write six books, it was challenging to say the least to reduce that list down to 80 dishes. The Okanagan Table: The Art of Everyday Home Cooking. Just like the name states… this was designed to be used by the home cook, it is not pages full of experiments (that never seem to work out) it is pages full of comfort and happiness. Chef Butters states “ …it harkens back to the happy feelings that a warm, aromatic kitchen instilled in us as kids” Rod takes great pride in promoting the growth of culinary tourism in Kelowna and now the Okanagan Valley. adventure, aside of operating RauDZ Regional Table and micro bar & bites (both in Kelowna) is Terrafina at Hester Creek by RauDZ. Perfectly located between Oliver and Osoyoos BC, right in the heart of The Wine Capital of Canada. He is not just putting his name on this intimate 45 seat dining room with additional patio seating but much to the delight of the rest of the planet, Rod will be hosting cooking classes by reservation only with groups of 14 lucky aspiring chefs. The stage is set… a worldclass chef hosting you and a few friends. You will be the envy of all you co-workers, family members and long list of associates. To say that this is an intimate, exclusive experience is a huge understatement. This Hester Creek setting is perfect for recreational workshops that will appeal to “home cooks” but also serious enough for budding chefs. These classes will ignite that fire inside. That special aroma of garlic frying in EVOO, followed by onion and ginger… this is the start of something magical!! Rod Butters is perfectly suited for this. Not only is he an amazing chef with over 25 years of experience, he is an outstanding entertainer. His instruction will steer you down the proper path with knife technique, the use of fresh (locally sourced) herbs and vegetables and the correct way to filet a fish or prepare a roast. Every experience is unique because every dish is unique. You know what people are doing in New York, Shanghai and Milan?? They are paying top dollar and going to cooking classes. This is such a rare adventure, big city adventure in the most splendid rural setting.
It speaks volumes when upon release of his cooking bible, Rod says “…this cookbook is for the home cook. I want you to get this book dirty – dog-ear the pages, write in the margins… “ Finally a practical guide book, not another conversation piece for your mantle. Long story short, if having fun in a room full of like minded people all being taught by one of our generations most captivating, charming and lively chefs, then cooking classes with Chef Rod Butters is a must on your “to-do” list.

Only the Best for you, and The Okanagan! There is no way to control what you will be served when you visit a restaurant for dinner. But, you can control the environments that you put yourself in… That being said, if you are looking for the best steak in Western Canada don’t go to a place famous for fried chicken. I am sure that you get the picture. You are (and should be) the most critical foodie to yourself. You know what you like and more importantly you know what you don’t like. So, if you steer yourself towards the places that serves dishes that you enjoy, half of the battle is already won! Of course when you are dealing with a party greater than one it becomes more and more difficult to please everyone, but that is just a fact of life! Luckily for you, the Okanagan Valley has some of the greatest chefs to choose from and likewise some of the greatest ingredients to choose from. The Okanagan offers such a wide variety of culture when it comes to food and dining. Every nationality is handsomely represented from Vernon to Osoyoos. From big name, familiar restaurant chains that comfort you as you know what you are getting, to little “hole in the wall” eclectic spaces that people line up for. There is an appie or main dish that will make even the most critical foodie salivate!

Often the weather dictates the location. But since more often than not the weather here is hot and dry, some of the best and finest restaurants are located at wineries and golf courses. It is that outdoor, patio dining lifestyle that defines and exemplifies the Okanagan. Even if you don’t golf or drink wine, one thing is for sure, you should make the effort sit on one of these many patios and enjoy what all the fuss is about. The Okanagan Valley always provides a bounty of the finest vegetables, herbs and fruits, all grown in our backyard, sensibly… one should harvest and serve them. This style of eating has become to be known as ”Farm to Table”, which seems to be a buzz word in the restaurant industry lately, but has been practiced here for many years. Welcome to dining in the Okanagan and the relentless pursuit of outstanding dining experiences. Allow fresh food to awaken your flavour senses and guide you to one of the many available perfect dining experiences.

Jeremy Tucker Iconic Chef Jeremy Tucker is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of Canada from Charlottetown P.E.I.. Jeremy has had the pleasure of traveling and working at notable restaurants in P.E.I., Alberta, Bermuda and New York, where he had the honour of working at the ‘James Beard House’. In the winters, Jeremy is executive chef at the ‘Snowwater HeliSki’, a boutique backcountry heli-ski lodge. It’s no surprise that the Vineyard Terrace Restaurant at CedarCreek Estate Winery ranks among the top restaurants in Kelowna. At a winery that was one of B.C.’s first eight pioneering wineries, ‘Respecting the land’ is the apotheosis of their philosophy and every effort is made for each bottle to be a true expression of their distinct terroir, the land where their wines are born. The food at the Vineyard Terrace Restaurant carries this philosophy through. Their seasonal farm-to-table menu changes every other week and all of their produce comes from Okanagan farms with a few meats from the interior. Chef Jeremy Tucker partners with passionate local producers to create a menu that offers a tantalizing taste of local, real food. The Long Run CedarCreek Estate Winery. Senator Ross Fitzpatrick made the first vintage of CedarCreek wines back in 1987, after purchasing the property the previous year. Running counter to the alarmist trend regarding the pending free trade agreement, Fitzpatrick stuck to his vision, that the Okanagan could, and would, produce unique wines of great character. No reason to fear an influx of wines from Napa or Sonoma; the Okanagan would stand on its own terroir, and flourish. Fitzpatrick’s confidence has been rewarded many times over since then, and today CedarCreek remains a standard-bearer for high quality wines expressive of the place they are grown. Perched just above Lakeshore Road, nestled not so far from the surrounding hills, CedarCreek has always been idyllic. Features such as a great patio restaurant, and an event space where many dozens of marriages have been conducted and concerts given, the winery has become a showcase for the region. Fitzpatrick and his son Gordon have always been hands-on proprietors, and the wine quality has steadily grown, as vines mature, and as the winemaking team adapts their
hard-won knowledge of soil types to specific grape varieties. Winery tours, quite a variety of them, in fact, can be scheduled, certainly. And the restaurant is called Vineyard Terrace; there you will taste the region’s local bounty, made by executive winery chef Jeremy Tucker, and chef de cuisine Ron Shaw. The restaurant alone is well worth the visit. February 2014 saw the Fitzpatricks take a proactive step, in selling the property to von Mandl Family Estates. For the Senator, this was about enduring legacy, and ensuring a bright future for CedarCreek under the careful, watchful eye of Anthony von Mandl, whose company also owns, among others, Mission Hill Family Estate, CheckMate, and the soon-to-be launched Martin’s Lane. Martin’s Lane, named for Anthony’s father, is sited just a few metres from CedarCreek, and will for the time being not actually be open to the public. The focus, on high-end pinot noir and chardonnay, plus a certain amount of riesling, is dedicated to showing there are

VALLEY PIONEERS We speak to General Manager Scott Locke, at Kelowna’s spectacular CedarCreek Estate Winery Left photo: Scott Locke What makes CedarCreek vineyards so special? The locations we have selected. From the steep, sun exposed slopes of the CedarCreek vineyards in Kelowna to the stony soils of our Desert Ridge vineyard Osoyoos, we have spent a lot of time finding the perfect sites and planting the right varieties. Every vineyard site is unique and it is about expressing the site where your vines are planted. Combine our special vineyards with the old vines and care and attention and you have the makings of great wine. What is the reason behind the success of your Vineyard Terrace Restaurant? It is an unmistakable truth of wine that its very best friend is food. And with a menu like ours, created with ingredients sourced from local farms, we are not only bringing the wine but all of the Okanagan to life. Pair that with a setting nestled in the vineyards with breathtaking views and its a dining experience that leaves you with a whole new appreciation for what dining should be.
Okanagan Confidential
Besides tasting wine, what else can one do at CedarCreek Estate Winery? We have many new events this year. From BBQ classes to Painting classes to sunset Yoga in the vinyard. We are one of the few wineries that are open daily, year round. You are welcome to join us any day for a wine tasting or join in on any of the Winery Tours offered daily at 11am, 1pm and 3pm, May 15-Sept 4.This summer we will also be offering seated food and wine paired tastings at our Vineyard Terrace that can be booked any day from 11am to 5pm and our popular Vineyard Tours with pairings is back Thu-Sun at 11am until Sept 4. So even if you have been here before, you will want to come back.
CedarCreek Estate Winery was one of the first 8 pioneering wineries in British Columbia. Right from the early onsets, CedarCreek’s pioneering has been tempered by patience and perseverance. Our ideals matured into our philosophy: “Respect the land, honour tradition, pursue perfection.” For almost 30 years now, we have pursued perfection and produced some of the valley’s best wines resulting in CedarCreek being twice recognized as “Canada’s Winery of the Year”. Passion, tenacity, care and hard work are vital but above all we seek truth in wine. And the results show in every bottle. On that, you have our word.
The world is a Big Place, why did you choose the Okanagan? I’m very familiar with Kelowna having spent my summers as a child in the Okanagan Valley. First on Skaha Lake in Kaleden at Ponderosa Point and then in my teens in West Kelowna. My strong family connection with CedarCreek began with my cousin and later my father who ran the distribution and warehousing for the winery. Today with a young family and my son in kindergarten, this was the right time. Kelowna is known for its outstanding public school system and community spirit, Go Rockets! - Scott Locke

virtually no limits to quality in the region, no glass ceiling for belonging at the same table as the most illustrious wine regions in the world. And thus far, anyone who has tasted Martin’s Lane wines tends to agree, the quality is magnificent. At CedarCreek itself, the tasting room is alive with a happy buzz all summer long. Some thoughtfully curated culinary products, along with select cookbooks and wine books, aid and abet the experience of tasting the wines, and choosing just the right bottles for tonight’s barbecue or tomorrow’s family picnic. Over time, the winery has garnered a multitude of awards, and as general manager Scott Locke put is, “the goal has always been to make the best wines possible, wines that reflect the land they come from. I know Mr. von Mandl is fully dedicated to maintaining this approach, and we are actually expanding the restaurant for next season, and building a whole new winery. Exciting times for CedarCreek.” There is an Estate line of wines, with dependable value built in to each bottle. The winery has historically had great success with chardonnay and pinot noir, but their ehrenfelser is consistently one of the very best in the whole valley, the riesling is seemingly better year
after year, the syrah has been a triumph from the very first vintage. Some of these sell out before July even arrives. There is a Platinum line as well, featuring some specific blocks of fruit which receive a little more time and sometimes more oak treatments. The viognier is unctuous and amazing; the Block 2 and Block 4 pinot noirs are fantastic, and, a recent entry into the portfolio, The Last Word, a Bordeaux blend, makes a major statement about how rich and complex an Okanagan wine can be. The winemaking team is headed by winemaker Tyler Whelan, and Locke affirms that “Tyler has really risen to the challenge here. Since Darryl Brooker left to take over at Mission Hill, and of course we miss him, we have seen success after success here. It’s pretty gratifying to be at CedarCreek, that’s for sure.” There are three primary vineyard sites: CedarCreek, first planted to grapes in the 1930s, sits all around the winery itself. Aromatic wines, and much of the pinot noir, are sourced here. Haynes Creek in Osoyoos, and Desert Ridge, near Oliver, provide the kinds of soil and climate that make big, rich, red wines and viognier possible.

VALLEY TEAM We Speak to Jeff & Decoa Harder and Partner Jay Paulson of Ex Nihilo Vineyards in Lake Country Left photo: Jay Paulson, Decoa and Jeff Harder What Makes A Visit To your Vineyard So Unique ? We created first and foremost to produce wines that exceed expectations, to deliver in the bottle is paramount. We also wanted to create a place where people could experience the essence of the our winery and our culture, to feel our passion. From the moment you enter Ex Nihilo, our goal is to share, educate and entertain. We want our guests to feel they enjoyed a valuable experience by stopping in; and looking forward to their next visit. A winery visit also includes experiencing the stunning Gallery Creatio featuring local Okanagan figurative and abstract artists. Last year we opened Chaos Bistro. Pairing our wines with Wood Fired Pizza and other exciting tapas will extend your epicurean experience in Ex Nihilo’s courtyard. What is YOUR wine making Philosophy? Attention to the details and to compromise nothing. Balance is the key to great wines and we take great care and pride in farming our vineyards sustainably and responsibly. We keep in mind that Mother nature always has the last bat, but we work hard and let our passion join her. That’s when our dedication to our craft shines in the bottle. We would rather explain the cost of quality in our wines , rather than for its absence. If it was not gold ...It would be easy.

A tribute to a friendship and a pact that will last a lifetime. The friendship dates well over 38 years. In grade 9 these two characters swore that they would be business partners and that pact has come true. They spoke of being concert promoters to fashion designers, but one thing was constant, It was going to be friendship first. Today they have been called the “Glimmer Twins “ of the wine business. When Jay took the roll as winemaker, it was his quest to be the best and to conquer the heartbreak grape placing Ex Nihilo on the world stage. His goal is to make more amazing wine than Jeff can sell, where Jeff wants to sell more than he can make... Fortunately they have Decoa, who keeps the boys grounded and to the beat of the drum. After winning the Lt.. Governor’s Award for the best Pinot Noir in BC, we would say, let the boys take centre stage and play some Rock and Roll.... They deserve it!

What makes the Okanagan wine scene so exciting? When we first cut our teeth in the business, there was approximately 120 wineries in the Province. We thought that was a lot at the time. Sadly Okanagan wines did not blip much on the radar outside the Western Provinces. We felt that we were on a football field that had not yet been played on. Today there is well over 320 wineries and the support of wine consumers, restaurants, and retail in all Provinces has also increased greatly. Our wines now shine brightly on the world stage too. We have won gold medals from the world prestigious Riesling du Monde, and the Lt. Governor’s Award for best Pinot Noir. Our wines are now in Hong Kong, Mainland China and the USA. Media from all over the world is recognizing our industry in the Okanagan and claiming that we may be the next Napa Valley. List five words that best describe your character and work ethic. 1) Team work 2) Dedication 3) Desire 4) Determination 5) Passion. You need all of these to make it in this business baby! The words overlap but without them the marriage in the wine business won’t work. Our team at Ex Nihilo is the best. There is a clear understanding of what our goals and philosophies are and everyone on our team feels the same way. If you get up in the morning and do not live by these five words, the wine business is not for you. However, when you put them together and swim up the river the same way there is romance by the bushel...

Valley GUY We speak with Tony Holler, proprietor of Poplar Grove Winery. Born in Summerland and familiar with the Okanagan’s fruitful bounty, he sets out to make world-class wines. Left photo: Tony Holler The world is a big place, why did you choose the Okanagan? I was born in Summerland and grew up farming my family’s apple orchard so I was no stranger to the beauty and bounty of the Okanagan Valley. About ten years ago, my wife Barb and I decided that the Okanagan Valley was the most beautiful place we had ever been. My passion is great wine and I knew that the Okanagan Valley could produce the fruit that would allow us to make world-class wines. We decided then and there to move back to the Okanagan Valley.
What makes the Okanagan wine scene so exciting?

The Valley has attracted so much talent, all with an incredible amount of commitment to the land and to continuous improvement to the winemaking processes. Each year, the Okanagan wine community’s knowledge of the climate, the soil and their land grows. Discovering mesoclimates and microclimates, deciding which clone and root stock is best suited to the soil, and using this information to inform the planting of new vineyards throughout the valley is very exciting.
What are the future plans in store for your winery? Now that the doors to Poplar Grove’s brand new winery are open year round, our plan is to invite the world to visit us on the Naramata Bench. We can’t wait for everyone to experience our signature wines! A few years back, we created the Poplar Grove Wine Club. Becoming a wine club member is the newest way to be a part of the Poplar Grove family. Our members enjoy discounts on direct wine purchases and invitations to exclusive events at the winery. Together, we are growing our wine club and I personally invite everyone to join us on our journey to make truly great wines!
What is the best insider tip for pairing food and wine together? The best tip I have ever heard for pairing food and wine is to make sure you are eating and drinking exactly what you like with your favourite people in a fantastic place. One July long weekend as great friends and I were sitting at Poplar Grove on the Vanilla Pod Restaurant patio waiting for the fireworks, we opened a bottle of the 2007 Legacy and had it with Chef Bruno’s seared rare beef tenderloin topped with warmed olive oil and finished with sea salt. It was a perfect Okanagan summer evening with the greatest of friends, and the food and wine couldn’t have tasted any better.

The King of Sweden Says... Sweden’s Queen Silvia, left, Governor-General David Johnson, second left, his wife Sharon Johnson and King Carl XVI Gustaf pose for the cameras at Stockholm Royal Palace Monday Feb. 20, 2017.
Painted Rock proprietor John Skinner is on a crusade of sorts. He wants to bring Okanagan wines to the international stage, and of course to international markets. After some heavy research, he discovered that Scandinavia was a rather large market for wines from California and Oregon, but that Canada had not a seat at the table as of yet. Then he got to work. It is a long, involved story, but key to it all is Janet Dorozynsky, whose job is Trade Commissioner, Canadian Wine, Beer and Spirits and Tourism. She heard Skinner out, and with her direct involvement, not only Painted Rock (the 2013 merlot was the

wine Skinner tabbed as the right choice from his winery) but several other Canadian wines were poured, at a state dinner for just over 400 guests, in Stockholm earlier this year. “They initially wanted our syrah, but the merlot is showing nuance and complexity that it really never has before. That wine is better than ever,” says Skinner. And the evening proved him right. One of the guests was the head of the Swedish wine and liquor monopoly. The guests of honour for the evening, though, were King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, of Sweden. At one point, the King actually stood up, glass in hand and stated he loved the Painted Rock, and wondered if it was available in Sweden. Rest assured, this put plenty of wheels in motion. Skinner is understandably excited, and even now gets very animated talking about this. “We want to build the export market, and it is not only Painted Rock, of course. We know there is strength in numbers, and several other Okanagan wineries are joining forces, with the set purpose of growing international markets.” The question of whether Okanagan wines can really shine on the international stage is becoming more redundant by the day.

O’Keefe Ranch The moment that you step foot onto the sprawling 50 acre estate you get a real feel for what it was like back in 1867 when Cornelius O’Keefe first founded this location when he drove a heard of cattle from the coast. What was once just a field at the end of a dusty wagon road, eventually grew into a stagecoach depot and later bloomed into a self contained community. Cornelius and his partners Thomas Greenhow and Thomas Wood (the namesake of Wood Lake) arrived at this location because of the wide open fields of grass with creeks and lakes where their cattle could comfortably graze. Let yourself get transported back in time as you explore the timeline that started with a small shack and ultimately finished with a selfsufficient little town. The buildings include, The O’Keefe Mansion, Post Office, Blacksmith Shop, Pottery Barn, Grist Mill, the first Catholic Church in the area and a cemetery. You can see how things progressed for the original settlers. Every several years the O’Keefe house got bigger. Starting out with what is now the chicken coop, that was the original home and without question is the oldest building on site. There was a mid sized house and eventually the mansion which still sits there today and is open for guided tours with your host wearing period clothing to give you that authentic feel. You get a real idea of what “extravagant” living was by late 1800’s standards. This home has the look and feel of a Victorian era building. Which is interesting because Cornelius O’Keefe was a cowboy, but wanted nothing but the best for his wives and children.
In keeping with the cowboy theme, while visiting the ranch you are able to tour through the village and fields on horseback. What a thrill, to experience history on the back of a horse! There are also period specific animals on site, meaning the actual kind of sheep and ducks that were originally at home on the ranch. Shetland Sheep, Jacob Sheep, all sorts of birds, ducks, geese, peacocks… too many to name here. The church has just undergone a major renovation on the exterior. It has been brought back to its original white wash colour, which gives it that real authentic aged look. Be sure to take note of the interior too, the blue ceiling and stovepipe designed to heat the room. These are just a couple of details that you can experience as you tour the grounds, but the church is the hallmark of O’Keefe Ranch. The blacksmith shop and pottery barn are actually working studios for local artisans to display their wears or during events they will have their shops in full working order for you to see and admire the processes that were involved long before modern day comforts. O’Keefe Ranch is open six months a year and offers a wide array of functions, tours and fund-raisers. Don’t miss out on prospects like The Victorian Christmas Party, or the corn maze that transforms into “The Field of Screams” at Halloween or just an everyday tour that will relax you, educate you and excite. To keep the children focused on the historical aspect of the tour there is a candy store (located at the General Store). Come and enjoy this delightful cross-over of Victorian era and cowboy culture O’Keefe Ranch truly is a place full of Heritage!

INSPIRED LIVING Decks, docks, and a desire for something better. by Albert Berkshire
Technically, it may be considered a marketing term, a buzz word, a power-packed statement. It’s designed to give you a summary of what life is like in the Okanagan. A person might think it is overused, but if you spend enough time in BC’s Okanagan Valley, you’ll completely understand it. The expression is Inspired Living. For the uninitiated, this seems hard to believe. A place in Canada with weather this amazing, summers so long and

toasty warm, and a laissez faire approach to life that we have patios and decks that are more elaborate than our living rooms. After seventeen years here, I still feel I’m playing catch-up with the patio furniture game. And to some, the economics of two outdoor armchairs and two love seats, dining for six, far too many of spouse-selected throw pillows, and vintage lighting is a bit ridiculous. But when you sit here (even to write) it all seems to make perfect sense. The only afterthought is, “why didn’t we do this 15 years ago?”

And a deck, though entirely what you make it, is something that features prominently in the inspired lifestyles of those who have migrated to BC’s interior. Okanagan residents - mostly newcomers, by the by get rightfully swept away when they tour through lifestyle focused communities like Wilden, Predator Ridge, West Harbour, Lakestone, McKinley Landing and Vista Villas (in Vernon). These residential communities have inspired living (there’s that word again!) as the core of who they are, and to whom they relate. After all, if you’re considering a move to the Okanagan,
you certainly have to keep in mind how you’ll spend your leisure time. And this aging mountain biker, skier, paddler, quasi-skater, hiker, and camper can tell you, you’ll always find time to sit on the deck and sip some local wine, or craft cocktails ‡ la Okanagan Spirits. And why wouldn’t we? We have outdoor sofas and long hot summer days.

But wait, there’s more! Those deck parties aren’t just for summer, with Big White, Silver Star, Apex, and Sun Peaks just a short drive out of the Valley, we’re not adverse to down jackets, outdoor fireplaces, and snow-covered deck parties for our aprés ski festivities. I mean, it may be winter, but it is still the Okanagan Valley - and we have hot tubs in the mountains! And then there’s the docks. Okanagan Lake is unreal. It’s 120 kilometres of wide-open fun from Vernon in the North to Penticton in the South - with Kelowna at the half-way point. So many secluded beaches, points to jump out of your boat and do a quick hike or have a picnic, or even just shut off your engine (or pull in your paddle) - and float. And while paddle power has always been my thing, you can’t miss the broad smiles and screams of joy I hear every day when I look out at the lake to see ski boats roaring past.

In pursuit of a life reboot, the ultimate retirement, or even a family vacation to remember, people tow their boats here from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Washington and Oregon. The sheer size of Okanagan Lake alone (there’s also Kalamalka, Wood, and Skaha Lakes in the valley) makes the abundant boat traffic seem light. Though, while most people like to showboat close to City Park and Gyro Beach, there are plenty places you can go in under ten minutes to escape the crowds and find some solitude on the water. size… well, let’s rethink that together… we lack nothing. The abundance of lifestyle related opportunities far outweigh the benefits of a huge city disconnected from nature. And that’s where we excel.
And that’s why some people move here. For the inspired living. But not all. Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton, even Osoyoos and Kamloops are all still relatively affordable. The value of real-estate has grown here over the last two decades, but that is just a factor of supply and demand. Compared to Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton - or the current boom cities of Regina and Winnipeg - owning a simple, or even spectacular, home in the Okanagan Valley is still inexpensive. Shooting for Pars... and Postcards in the Thompson Okanagan It’s a couple of hours before sunset and I clamber up to a high spot above the 17th fairway to survey the scene. If the sun breaks through (a long shot given the forecast) and my calculations are correct (I’m not great at math), the scene – the colours, the contours, the soft back-lighting – should make for eye-popping imagery. And, fingers crossed, I’ll be able to get a postcard-worthy shot that showcases Tower Ranch’s exquisite 17th hole. Without a doubt, the Thompson Okanagan is laced with spectacular golf holes that swerve through idyllic scenes. The orchards, the vineyards, the mountains, the deserts, the valleys, the forests, the shimmering lakes; it all adds up to pictureperfect settings for the game. Throw in beautifully contoured golf holes and great light and, presto, you’ve got a golf course photographer’s heaven! I’ve been fortunate to photograph (and play) many golf courses in North America and abroad. the Doug Carrick-designed Ridge Course, for example, make for an awesome one-two punch for both pars and pictures! At 216 yards from the white tees, the par-3 5th is a downhill doozy that never disappoints. Although the massive, undulating green is an ample target, the swirling winds, the bunkers, the pond, and the stunning (not to mention distracting!) views of Okanagan Lake are enough to get your knees knocking! The very next hole, a dramatic down-the-hill par-4, is equally impressive. Ever hit a 300-yard drive? This is your hole! From the perched cliffside tee to the stunning backdrop, this is yet another gem of a hole to “shoot.” While Predator Ridge could rightfully be considered the trump card when it comes to golf in the Okanagan, from a purely photogenic standpoint, Tobiano in Kamloops is tough to beat. And, speaking of tough, the 7,367-yard Thomas McBroomdesigned layout requires power, precision, and nerves of steel to negotiate. Case in point: the par-5 8th. After blasting a tee shot over the ravine, a lay-up squeezed between the lake (or a go-for-broke attempt at the green?) is needed. It’s a challenging and amazing golf hole that epitomizes what Tobiano, which is widely considered one of the top public golf courses in Canada, is all about. Regardless of your score at Tobiano, the vast, unspoiled lakeside setting at Tobiano is one for the ages. And one you don’t want to miss. Unquestionably, the lakeside theme is common among many of the top golf courses in the region. And if unforgettable views and unforgettable holes that tumble and roll high

above the water are appealing (how can they not be!), a visit to Sagebrush is highly recommended. Now owned by the Newmark Group and managed by Troon Golf, Sagebrush is a wonderful Rod Whitman design that plays like a wild and remote Scottish links course. Complete with ragged bunkers, mind-boggling slopes, and 18 unique golf holes that require a skillful combination of creativity and brute force, Sagebrush is unlike anything else you’ll play. In terms of a signature hole, the par-4 2nd, which careens down the hill and features a rolling green hanging high above the lake, is definitely a candidate. Yet another lakeside layout with a beautiful finishing run on the water, Talking Rock at the Quaaout Lodge & Spa near Chase is also Thompson Okanagan classic. The 15th – an elevated par-3 with green guarded by sand and thigh-high fescue - is widely considered the signature hole. It features a gorgeous background with the shimmering surface of Shuswap Lake and pine-covered mountains in the distance. I’ve photographed this hole on a number of occasions and have always been smitten with the awesome aesthetics and the mouth-watering view from the tee. A tripod and a self-timer – and yours truly as the model! - have produced a number of “keeper” shots that I’ve utilized on numerous occasions. Naturally, from both a golfer’s and photographer’s perspective, “elevation” is a critical element. In other words, a lofty position is advantageous for both extra yardage and that pleasing bird’s eye view that makes a great golf image possible. And, thankfully, these elevated positions are a trademark of many of the courses in the Thompson Okanagan. In Kelowna - perhaps the ideal home base for a golf trip in the region - numerous courses provide that critical “high” perspective that makes both the golf and the photography a thrilling endeavor. Courses such as The Harvest Club, Gallagher’s Canyon, The Okanagan Golf Club, and Tower Ranch, for example, all provide this all-important elevation. (Incidentally, due to my photography work on flat courses, especially, I also utilize a 30-foot retractable pole that provides the ideal vantage point! And, of course, more and more people
are using drones these days for incredible aerial imagery.) Even though The Harvest Club, a smooth Graham Cooke design that rambles through orchards off K.L.O. Road, doesn’t feature massive elevation changes, there are more than enough vantage points to “paint” golf holes with a camera. Always one of my favourites to play in Kelowna (thanks to the orchards, the setting is about as relaxed and peaceful as it gets), the Harvest Club is the quintessential Okanagan golf experience. From the locally-inspired cuisine in the clubhouse to the glorious sunsets on the patio, this is a golf experience to savour! Dramatic elevation (and a savoury golf experience) also comes part in parcel at The Okanagan Golf Club. Another 36-hole facility – The Bear was designed by Nicklaus Design and The Quail was designed by Les Furber – The Okanagan Golf Club has an excellent variety of holes that parade through pines and plunge down the hillsides. To fill up on golf – and photos – play both courses in one day for an awesome Okanagan golf day! To round out a memorable Kelowna golf getaway, rounds at Gallagher’s Canyon (a parkland classic with a riveting run of holes along the canyon) and Tower Ranch should definitely be incorporated. Without a doubt, Tower Ranch, located high on arid benchland near the airport, is about as sublime a setting for golf as exists in the Thompson Okanagan. Although both nines are dramatic and daring, the back nine, which cuts up the mountain and ends with a stirring stretch high on the bench, is the real show-stopper. Designed by Thomas McBroom, the exceptional shaping and beautiful bunkering – not to mention the massive elevation changes! make it one of most photogenic courses I’ve ever seen. Which, for me, always makes for a difficult proposition: should I shoot golf balls or pictures? But whenever I’m in the Thompson Okanagan the answer is always the same. I do both.

Owned and operated by the Osoyoos Indian Band, Nk’Mip Canyon Desert Golf Course expanded from a relaxed nine-hole course to a championship model in 2001. We have redesigned our course to include 2 new spectacular holes for 2015. The result is a striking blend of natural contrasts divided into the desert-dominated Canyon Nine, which delights in throwing the elements at an unwary golfer, and the more laid-back Grove Nine whose verdant fairways and greens welcome a long drive and a satisfying putt.
