PAWS FOR

I have heard many times that a dog is mans best friend… I beg to differ! It makes more sense to look at it from our perspective, from the eyes of said dog. I like to think that man is dogs best friend. I mean, let’s face it, you would do almost anything for your dog, we see it everyday. And that’s what buddies are for, I scratch your back and you scratch mine… literally!

THOUGHT

Now, everyone thinks that their dog is the smartest but let’s be honest… we are all not quite eligible for a Nobel Prize! Just like people, some dogs are smarter than others. There are also many other qualities that people share with their pets, and most people could probably take some free advice that these quadrupeds are throwing out there. First things first, make sure that everyday, you make time to run and play. Life is busy, serious and full of responsibility, a little fun is great for the body and soul. People can also take note that they should always greet each other with great excitement whether they SYSCO BLU - EDITOR have been apart for three weeks or only three minutes. Projecting love and loyalty creates an unbreakable bond. Of course, you can’t wag your tail like we do, but a hand shake and a hug sends the same message. The bottom line is, when you are pleased, show it, we do. If more humans followed dog traits, I seriously think that they could lead healthier more contented lives. Think of the benefits of taking a long trail walk and stopping to smell almost everything along the way, nature is a wonderful thing, get out there and embrace it. Or how many times have you thought, let’s take a drive, just go for a ride, think about it, I think about it everyday.

Every time I get up from a nap the very first thing that I do is stretch, you should do the same. Not just stretch but every now and then take a nap too! We know when you are sick, unhappy or heavy hearted, and we will always stay close, either at your feet to let you know we are there or snuggled right into your chest. You should translate thins into your life too, comfort the people around you and take care of them. In the summer, stay hydrated and relax in the shade under a tree, in the winter, frolic in the snow, roll around and act like your eight years old! These are the kinds of things that we do and that you should definitely do. Eat with passion and make a mess if you want to. Lastly, in times of distress and unhappiness, think about sending a woof instead of a bite, I am sure that you know exactly what I mean. So, take it from me, dogs are probably smarter that you think they are and you can potentially learn a lot from us. Let’s keep working together cause well, you’re my best friend too!

Woof Weekend at The Westin

Why

Does My Dog Do That Dr. Steven Wilson

Bob came in to see me with a large Akita. It’s skin was mottled looking due to an area of thinning hair and reddened skin. “Doc I don’t get any sleep at night and I don’t think Lomac does either. All night long thump, thump, thump as Lomac is scratching away at his skin with his hind leg. Why is my dog doing that?” In my practice, this is a very common presenting complaint with a simple cause and a not so simple resolution. Lomac is scratching because his skin is itchy due to inflammation. Inflammation can be caused by a few different mechanisms and

10 | DOWNTOWNDOG

I’ll discuss the common one which is a type of allergic reaction. Allergic reactions in dogs cause inflammation in this skin which allows the normal skin defenses to be overwhelmed by bacteria and yeast commonly living on the skin. Inflammation leads to infection which worsens the itch and actually makes the condition painful. We see this especially in the ears. Broadly there are 3 main categories of things which can cause allergies in our pets;

parasites, food and the environment. Parasites can be the usual things that make us itchy like mosquitos and fleas or the more unusual like mites that burrow in the skin causing an intensely itchy reaction. Parasites are the first thing I look for in an itchy dog exam. If found there are many effective treatments available. If a test is clear of parasites, then I next consider food allergies to either a carbohydrate or protein source. The dog may have been on the food for a very long period of time and hypersensitivity could develop even though there may have not been a problem initially. Often food allergies are accompanied by other gastrointestinal signs like regurgitation, vomiting and stool inconsistencies but not always. If I suspect food allergies or want to rule them out I will try a new

diet with a new protein and a new carbohydrate source for 6 – 12 weeks. If it is an allergy, the itch will subside and the coat will become healthy again. The last category, environmental, can be very frustrating as the offending allergen can be anything in the environment that the dog is inhaling or that is contacting the dog’s skin. I always warn owners that the allergy symptoms can be a lifelong affliction if we don’t isolate the offending allergen or allergies. A veterinary dermatologist can do a sensitivity skin test much like the ones we do in humans however they don’t always get every allergen and desensitization doesn’t always work. Sometimes if we can’t isolate the allergen we have to control the symptoms. Inflammation can be controlled by steroids and or by products such as Atopica or Apoquel which dampen the inflammatory response through different

DOWNTOWNDOG.CA | 11

mechanisms. Secondary infections that arise because of inflammation of the skin can be controlled with medicated shampoos, antibiotics topically and by mouth as well as antifungal medication topically or by mouth. Some products can be used in an attempt to raise the inflammation threshold or make it harder for the allergen to cause a skin break out. Some examples of these products are spray on oatmeal conditioners, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. Spot on products like Dermoscent have hydro-lipophilic fats that block cracks in the top layer of skin called the stratum corneum so the allergens cannot make contact and start the inflammatory process. Hills Prescription Diets have been developed to counter the inflammatory process while feeding your dog.

12 | DOWNTOWNDOG

Some breeds do have more problems with allergic skin conditions but any dog can develop an allergy – see your vet to try to eliminate the allergens, control the symptoms and stop that thump, thump, thump in the middle of the night.

GO GOLFING WITH YOUR BEST FRIEND EAGLES, BIRDIES and DOG-LEGS, FOUR DOG LEGS TO BE EXACT Just imagine, your happy place… that place that you escape to once a week (or more if you are lucky!). That’s right, the golf course. For as long as people have been golfing, they have been using it as an escape from the real world. A place where you can be free, your only worries are long, straight drives, perfect approach shots and deadly accurate putting. In the grand scheme of things, pretty easy tasks compared to what is going on in the rest of your life. Now imagine all this, with a new twist. Your co-pilot in the golf cart is your best friend four legged friend. Predator Ridge has set the standard in many regards, but this elevates things to a whole new level. They are currently

14 | DOWNTOWNDOG

taking Dog Friendly Tee Times, which are available every Sunday after 4 PM. It is a perfect fit really, it’s like a massive backyard, 1,200 acres to be exact. In an on-going effort to accommodate peoples needs, they are the first golf resort in British Columbia to introduce this kind of pet friendly initiative. Of course there are strict rules that go along with “Dog Friendly Tee Times”. Dogs must be on a leash at all times, no barking or bad behaviour and each golfer is responsible for Fido at all times. If the course ambassadors remove your pet from the course, you must go with it (and feel great shame!). This would only happen after certain, proper warnings have been given.

GO GOLFING WITH YOUR BEST FRIEND

Fido plays for free, there is no cost to spend the afternoon golfing with your pet. Predator Ridge is not just a pet friendly golf course, but a pet friendly resort and community. Walking trails, pet friendly patios, dog stations, pet friendly shopping and pet friendly accommodation are all a part of the pet renaissance at Predator Ridge. A portion of the resort pet fee ($30/night) goes to the BCSPCA. Of course they take pride in keeping a clean community. As a result, they have installed “Dog Stations which provide two necessities while spending time with your little buddy outside, dog bags and of course garbage bins conveniently located throughout the community. So, do yourself a favour and make arrangements to enjoy two things that you would not even consider doing together. This is one of those rare events that will turn into fond memories that make people chuckle at every dinner parties for years to come! Enjoy a round with your best dog buddy and let him appreciate watching you chase balls around for once!

DOGSCAPING

Probably everyone that has taken the time to pick up and read this magazine have done so because of an outright love for dogs. Your furry pets have a magical hold on you and as a result you will do almost anything for them! One of the greatest gifts in the world you could give Fido is a space of his or her own. Creating a landscape (or dogscape) that works well for both of you is the key to eternal happiness! Dogs need so much more than just a fence to contain them and a ball to entertain them. If you give them

18 | DOWNTOWNDOG

things to do and places to go on your property, they will control their part and you can enjoy yours. First off, these are not rules, just ideas, but starting with a fence is a great plan. Now that you have your roaming dog contained, you can have a beautiful yard to enjoy with friends and family while your dog(s) wander in their own space. There are a few requirements to keep your pets safe from the elements. Most dogs have only five prerequisites. They need water, sun, shade, a place to run and a place to relax, like a dog house or shelter.

creating a pawsitive oasis

There is really only one rule to dogscaping, maintain a safe area for your dog. Be sure to research nontoxic plants and flowers, because even the most well behaved puppy is constantly curious and might bite the odd flower, just to give it a taste! The most ideal water feature is a gurgling fountain that allows for easy drinking and getting your paws wet on a hot day. Or if you have visions of grandeur, a small waterfall/ pond feature that is deep enough for your dog to wade into and get its legs and belly wet, a refreshing soak is always nice.

Now creating a balance with you, your pet and sun and shade. People tend to like trees, dogs also like trees. People tend to like sun, well good news, dogs also like sun. But some people prefer shade, good news, many dogs also prefer shade! The key is creating a balance of sun and shade that works well for both of you. There are two trains of thought for designing walkways in your yard. Dogs are like water, they have a tendency to seek out the path of least resistance! Allowing your dog to freely navigate the yard gives

DOWNTOWNDOG.CA | 19

them a sense of responsibility and accomplishment. Instinctively dogs want to protect their/your space. By providing walking paths to keep them moving is a great way to allow your little buddy to exercise just by roaming around the pathways. Planting shrubs in front of fences are great way to naturally take the edge off. But, by leaving a three foot gap between the bushes and the fence leaves room for your hound to patrol the perimeter of the property and constantly run up and down the fence, all the while being hidden by the bushes. This is dog heaven! This is the perfect example of providing you pup with its own space so they do not destroy yours. Providing a spot for your four legged brethren to relax and sleep is the final piece to this amazing puzzle. A dog house creates a home base that affords comfort, shelter and safety. To ensure that your pet property fits into your dogscaping plan, build a house that mimics your actual home, sit back and listen to every visitor say “Ahhhh, this is so amazing! Whether you know it or not, your pooch loves to sit and survey the property and the situation. Why not provide them the ability to do this at their own

20 | DOWNTOWNDOG

discretion. Some yards will have a genuine high point that works perfectly, but most will need a little something. An elevated flat rock is a great natural option for a lookout, you can even build a couple of steps to help smaller dogs get to and from their perch. Or maybe a home made platform is better suited for your and your pup.

Lastly establishing a specific area for your dog to “do its business” is great way to protect your space from dead grass patches and unsightly messes. Creating a zone that has a different texture than grass, like bark mulch or round gravel can save your lawn. Teaching your pet to pee in a specific spot can be helped by placing a marker, a fake fire hydrant or a garden gnome. This creates a target and keeps your green grass green and clean! Face it, your dog deserves the very best. They are known as “Mans Best Friend” for a reason! I assure you that if you spoil them and they will spoil you right back! DOWNTOWNDOG.CA | 23

The

doctor

My dog is feeling the weather and her age. Is there anything I can add to her food to help her arthritis? Answer: Absolutely! Osteoarthritis can really affect a pet’s mobility in the winter months. Nutritional supplements and natural remedies are some of the most effective tools we have to treat a dog (or cat’s) arthritis. Every aging canine should be getting a health dose of high quality fish oil, with enough EPA. All fish oils aren’t created equal: make sure your fish oil doesn’t smell like fish. If it does, it has gone rancid and actually contributes to inflammation. Instead, your quality fish oil should smell like ocean, and should be kept in the fridge to keep it fresh. Glucosamine and other glycosaminoglycans provide building blocks for joint fluid and cartilage. One of the best sources is greenlipped mussel, straight from the ocean, which you can buy in powdered form. Glucosaminoglycans are complementary to fish oil and and herbal medicines. Herbal remedies can also be extremely effective to ease the symptoms of arthritis. Our hospital’s mobility tincture includes ashwaganda and devil’s claw to reduce stress and quells inflammation, ginger to stimulate circulation, and St. John’s Wort to minimize pain and give a pick-me-up to depressed dogs. Herbal powders and tinctures are simply added to the dog’s food, can have excellent results, and are also complementary to the others sea-sourced supplements. Vaccines are a hot topic, and I’m interested how you weigh in. Do I need to vaccinate my dog and cats? Answer: Vaccines can play an important role in protecting your pet; however, routine vaccination is often unnecessary.

24 | DOWNTOWNDOG

is in... Dr. Jason Rowan

Puppy and kitten vaccine series are important, as they give your pet initial exposure to diseases. But as your pets become adults, it’s best to test their immunity level to see if they need a vaccine boost, instead of just boosting a vaccination without knowing if they need it or not. I recommend that every adult dog and cat receives a titre test before deciding to administer vaccine boosters. This approach prevents over-vaccination and unnecessarily stimulating your dog or cat’s immune system. Titre (pronounced tight-er) testing is a medical alternative to routine vaccinations. A titre test is a blood test performed in a laboratory that measures the immunity levels to individual diseases. At our hospital, we can do titre tests for rabies, as well as for the canine parvovirus, distemper and adenovirus, and feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia. Most boarding and daycare facilities in Kelowna accept titre tests as proof of immunity in lieu of vaccine certificates. Our family has a new puppy. What kind of toys do you recommend? Answer: Congratulations on your new family member. As you get to know him, you will find if he is a stuffie or ball kind of guy. The size of the dog doesn’t matter: our 180 lb wolfhound is gentle with stuffed animals but I know several chihuahuas that can make short work of soft toys.

As a general guideline, choose toys that are bigger than his mouth, so he doesn’t get them stuck or swallow them. This might mean you size up his toys as he grows. Depending on how aggressively he chews, you may be able to give him soft fabric toys, or may have to stick to leather or fabric reenforced with upholstery thread. Resist the urge to let him chew his toys apart, as he could digest the pieces. Instead, try hardy rubber or tiger-tested toys for maximum fun and minimal danger. Lastly, avoid playing hard games of tug with your puppy until he gets older, as those baby teeth are quite fragile and break easier than you might think. Sometimes my Boston terrier gets an upset tummy. Do you have any home remedies you recommend? Answer: Have an upset stomachs is no fun, for the pet or the person cleaning up after them. When your dog gets diarrhea, constipation or other intestinal issues, you should them a very bland, low fat, fibrous and easily digestible food. Some people try hamburger, which only makes the issue worse since it is full of fat. Instead, try canned pumpkin. I don’t mean pumpkin pie mix, but the 100% squash variety without any spices. Pumpkin is, as our animal chiropractor Dr. Pam Carlson says, “the great equalizer.” It helps restore normal bowel function. If your dog is vomiting, sometimes a 12-24 hour fast away from food can give their stomachs the break that it needs. Of course, both vomiting, diarrhea and constipation can indicate more serious conditions. If your dog can’t keep water down, they are painful or lethargic, or the bowel upset last more than a day, it’s best to see your veterinarian. I was visiting my sister and was surprised to see her brushing her little dog’s teeth. Is this overkill, or does brushing really help? Answer: Your sister isn’t crazy. Well, at least not about brushing her dog’s teeth! Ideally, all

pet owner’s should brush their dog’s teeth, as it really helps prevent tartar building up and ruining their mouth. Remember, healthy teeth aren’t only for a dog to eat with; they use teeth to pick up things, groom themselves and even play. Teeth brushing is especially important for small dogs, because they are often prone to dental issues. It’s easier to start a dog as a puppy, but a tasty chicken or seafood flavoured toothpaste does wonders even for a reluctant retriever. In between brushes, you can also give your dog soft chews so they can naturally fight off tartar. Avoid super hard chews like hooves and antlers: they are a recipe for cracked molars. You’ll also want to avoid rawhide that comes apart in strips and can be swallowed by your dog. Choose instead dried meat treats like trachea or pizzel sticks for big dogs, or dried chicken gizzards for small dogs. Treats like these let them practice their chewing and clean their teeth at the same time. I’ve heard that dogs need their ears cleaned regularly, but I don’t know what I should use, or how often. Answer: Ear cleaning is part of a regular grooming routine for most dogs, but how often depends on a few factors. If your dog swims regularly, then an ear cleaning and drying after a soak in the lake is good idea. Some breeds are also prone to yeast infections (think droopy-eared breeds like basset hounds and cocker spaniels) and a weekly cleaning can help knock back the build-up of yeast in their ear canals. Otherwise, most other dogs only need an ear cleaning about once a month. When choosing a preventative ear cleaner, you want to look for an astringent, antiseptic herbal wash designed for that purpose. Use gauze or cotton balls to soak up and clean out the visible outside ear. As your grandmother says, never put anything inside your ear smaller than your elbow. So don’t use cotton swabs or tissues, which could hurt the ear or leave bits behind. If your dog’s ears start to smell bad or have brown goo inside of them, or your dog is continually shaking their head, please take those ears, and the dog, to the vet.

HOMEMADE PEANUT BUTTER AND BANANA

Nutty Bacon Dog Treats • 3 slices of bacon, diced • 1/3 cup creamy natural peanut butter • 1 tablespoon maple syrup • 3 tablespoons water • 1/2 cup soy flour • 1 egg • 1/2 whole wheat pastry flour • 1/2 cup wheat germ

• 1 banana, peeled • 1 cup oat flour • 2/3 cup rolled oats • 1/2 cup dried parsley • 3 tablespoons peanut butter • 1 egg, beaten

Preheat oven to 300°F. Put banana in a large bowl and use a spoon or potato masher to mash it thoroughly. Add oat flour, oats, parsley, peanut butter and egg and stir well to combine. Set aside for 5 minutes. Roll mixture into 24 balls, using about 1 tablespoon dough for each; transfer to a large parchment paper-lined baking sheet as done. Use the back of a spoon or the heel of your hand to press each ball into a (1 1/2- to 2-inch) coin. Bake until firm and deep golden brown on the bottom, 40 to 45 minutes. Set aside to let cool completely.

• Preheat oven to 300 degrees and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. • Fry the diced bacon until crispy. With a slotted spoon, remove the crispy bacon but save the fat. Allow the fat to cool slightly (2-5 minutes) • Add the egg, peanut butter, maple syrup and water to the bacon fat and mix thoroughly. • Add in the flours and wheat germ and mix until combined. Stir in the crispy bacon pieces. • Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4” thick. Cut into desired shapes. I used three different 1” cookie cutters. • Bake in the oven for 12-15 minutes (for 1” diameter shapes) until lightly browned. • Cool and serve

Homemade Flax Seed Dog Biscuit Recipe

DELICIOUS TREATS

• 12 oz (340g)whole wheat flour • 12oz (340g) bread flour • 2 oz (55g) wheat germ • 1 t (5g) salt • 3 eggs • 2T (30g) brown sugar • 3-4T Flax Seed (optional) • 1c (240ml) vegetable oil • 3oz (85g) powdered dry milk • 1c (240ml) water • Combine wheat flour, bread flour, wheat germ, salt, and brown sugar, and flax seed in mixing bowl. Stir in eggs and vegetable oil. • Dissolve dry milk in water then incorporate the mixture. • Mix to form a very firm dough that is smooth and workable. Adjust by adding a little extra flour or water as required. • Cover the dough and set aside to relax for 15-20 min. • Roll the dough out to 1/2”(1.2cm) thick. Cut out biscuits using a bone-shaped cutter 3”x1.5”(7.5×3.7cm). Place the biscuits on sheet pans lined with baking paper. • Bake at 375°F (190°C) for approx. 40 minutes or until biscuits are brown and, more importantly, rock-hard. Let biscuits cool, then store in a covered container five to six feet off the flour. Use as needed to reward your four-legged friends.)

PUMPKIN BISCUITS • 2 eggs • ½ cup canned pumpkin • ½ teaspoon salt • 2 tablespoons dry milk • 2½ cups flour ( wheat is probably better!) • water

• Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. • Blend eggs and pumpkin together; add salt, dry milk, and flour. • Add water as needed to make the dough somewhat workable. • The dough should be dry and stiff, don’t be concerned with crumbs being left in the bowl. • You will need to mix this with your hands because it is too stiff for an electric mixer. • Roll to ½-inch thick. • Cut into shapes. • Place 1” apart on ungreased cookie sheet. • Bake for 20 minutes on one side, then turn over and bake another 20 mins

DOG FRIENDLY PARKS

okanagan

To keep your dog happy, healthy and entertained, dog parks play an important roll in every community. We are especially lucky here in The Okanagan because of the lakes, open spaces and dog-friendly people. It is important for dogs to constantly build on their social skills and continue to work on their relationships with their owners. There are currently

dozens of developed, undeveloped and proposed future dog parks in the greater Okanagan area. An ideal dog park would have water (to drink and/or swim), shade is a must in this warmer climate, a cache of extra doggie bags so that our parks remain clean and healthy and a separate, specific zone for smaller breeds. Because summers are so long and hot in

TRUE LEAF’S

HEMP-BASED PET CHEWS FIND

“TRUE LOVE” What Does True Leaf Pet Do? True Leaf Pet provides quality of life to our furry friends with their innovative functional hemp-based dog chews. The health and medicinal benefits of hemp are quickly becoming recognized by researchers worldwide and - with a science-based focus and a team of highly regarded professionals in the medical, veterinary, hemp production and regulatory field - True Leaf Pet is well on their way to becoming a leader in the hemp product industry. Although hemp and marijuana are closely related, they are not the same varietal. Hemp is legal in Canada and the USA, it does not contain any psychoactive compounds, and it does not get your dog ‘high’. Hemp seeds are a balanced and rich natural source of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in an ideal 3:1 ratio, plus vitamins A, E, B-12, folic acid, magnesium, potassium and iron. Hemp supports your pets health by providing anti-oxidants like tocopherols plus significant amounts of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and gamma linolenic acid (GLA), which help support the body’s natural response to inflammation. Common ailments are mobility, and anxiety. this provided True Leaf Pet

MY TERRITORY I’m a runner. A lover of long and hilly trails. My family and I live in Wilden. They love what I love.

My mom takes me for a run every morning. We’re lucky that our fa vourite trail starts just steps from our house. It means she is always back in time for work. My whole family loves being out doors. Our greatest hikes with the best views start right in our backyard. Plus, I have lots of friends in the neighbourhood. And there‘s plenty of space for more. So come out and play!
