WELCOME TO If you are looking for sand and beaches, you have come to the right place! Kelowna and the Okanagan are also home to agriculture, vineyards,

Nourished by a hot, sunny and dry climate, cool nights and soil well suited for growing grapes, the Okanagan Valley and its mountainsides have become one of Canada’s foremost wine producing regions. The Kelowna area is home to more than a dozen wineries and most of the Okanagan Wine Country’s vineyards offer wine tours that teach visitors the art of the craft. WINE ROUTE signage, showing a cluster of grapes, directs visitors to “not be missed” wineries from major roadways.

16 2016/2017

Orchards and vineyards produce some of the country’s best fruit and wines. The spring, summer and fall wine festivals offer hundreds of activities dedicated to wine making, tasting and touring the region’s many wineries. With an average of 2,000 hours of sunshine every year, warm summers with low humidity and mild winters, the Okanagan Valley and its surrounding hillsides are Canada’s fruit basket.

the OKANAGAN & FAMILY FUN! technology, golf courses and lakes. Lifestyle and fun in the sun is what keeps the entire valley going.

Throughout the region, fruit and vegetable stands are an Okanagan tradition. These roadside stalls offer the chance to purchase and enjoy some of the freshest and best quality produce to be found anywhere; no wonder, as the delicious offerings are often grown on the hills right behind. Kelowna’s downtown is a dynamic and bustling place with a village like atmosphere and a wide array of shops

and boutiques for the latest fashions, accessories, and trends for the body, mind and home. The downtown core has just undergone a major revitalization, with new larger sidewalks, modern lighting and an overall feeling of cleanliness and happiness. Take a walk and set course for the new and improved downtown Kelowna and be sure the check out the new waterfront boardwalk and marina area.

The actual boundary for the South Okanagan is between Peachland and Summerland. This hilly country provides a beautiful backdrop for those communities that are dotted along the shoreline of Lake Okanagan. Hot, dry summers and mild winters are the ingredients that make these lucky places the South Okanagan. From Summerland all the way down to the US border, you will find Osoyoos and several “must see destinations in between.

18 2016/2017

The greatest way to get a feel for Penticton, Oliver, Osoyoos & the South Okanagan is to fly over it. A bird’s eye view really helps you to grasp how magical this region really is. It is well represented with summer fun, lakes, beaches, and river floating. But, it also becomes very evident that there is a huge agricultural presence here. Obviously wine is at the forefront, but keep in mind that fruits and vegetables are abundant and have been around a lot longer than the grapes!

Deep agricultural roots are obvious in the picturesque orchards & vineyards, as the visitor is welcomed to a huge variety of fruit stands and market gardens. Recently, a fabulous wine tour route has emerged in Summerland, offering spectacular scenery as you wind your way through the countryside. The Bottleneck Drive wine route is truly an experience featuring 12 wineries, award winning wines and Summerland hospitality.

From the lake basins and hundreds of sandy beaches, up to the high plateaus and mountains that cradle the Okanagan Valley, this is a place that tempts you with numerous options. Explore the South Okanagan and discover the culture and treasures that surround you in every direction.

Don’t Forget To Have Some Fun in the Okanagan

BEE WISE at PLANET BEE Understanding the honey bee has been Ed Nowek’s life long ambition. Planet Bee Honey Farm in Vernon BC was his solution to getting that message out to the rest of the world. Ed has adopted “bee philosophy” into everyday life. You can achieve so much more together than you can as individuals. Ed recognized that few people knew anything about honeybees and the concept of a honeybee tourist attraction was born. Planet Bee goes a whole lot further than just honeybee education. Tourist traffic has been constantly increasing thanks to Ed’s perseverance and unwavering belief in his concept. Continuously introducing new products has been the key to his success. Educational Tours are the foundation of the operation. They offer more and more products all of the time, like unique mixtures called Hive Healer Honey which help people with respiratory ailments and allergies. He has recently launched a unique line of all-natural body care products called “Let It Bee” which contains bee pollen, royal jelly, propolis and of course honey. Encouraged by the demand of bee products, Ed began producing Honeymoon Mead, a honey wine steep in historic tradition. For one of the remarkable experiences in the Okanagan Valley, be sure to spend some time at Planet Bee Honey Farm and be sure to keep an eye out for the most intriguing items like Mason Bee Homes (like a birdhouse for bees) and hibernation hotels that shelter and promote breeding.

EXPLORING THE VALLEY

The Okanagan Valley is the ideal mix of mountain sides rolling into clear blue fresh water lakes, flanked by orchards, wineries and long green fairways! In the summer, sandy beaches are the hot spots (literally) while communities from Vernon to Osoyoos offer wonderful places to eat, shop and wander. This outdoor paradise attracts people from all over the world and satisfies people that live here. This valley is truly a sanctuary!

36 2016/2017

From Kelowna by car, touring choices radiate out in three main directions – North on Highway 97, which heads for Lake Country, Vernon and Salmon Arm, South on Highway 97 which crosses Okanagan Lake (at Kelowna) and then undulates down towards Penticton, Oliver & Osoyoos and finally Highway 33, which climbs high into Kettle Valley country to the South and East. It’s an arid landscape of hoodoos, orchards

and vineyards, ponderosa pine forests, peaks and valleys, lakes and highlands. The diversity and the choices are exceptional. Welcome to Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley. Like many communities in the Okanagan, Vernon boasts a healthy lifestyle with an emphasis on the outdoors. Surrounded by lakes, the land provides the ideal playground

for watersports and all outdoor activities. Vernon has grown up and shaped into that has become much more of a destination than a town you used to pass through on your way to somewhere else. That distinction has been surpassed thanks to outstanding shopping, restaurants, high-end hotels, championship golf, skiing and‌ you get the picture!

The commercial hub of the Okanagan Valley is Kelowna. A community inspired by beaches and lake life. Stand up paddleboarding, kite surfing, wake boarding and anything water related keeps the excitement levels high. There is sun if you are searching for relaxation on a beach or poolside and there is shade, if you are after some down time on a patio enjoying a beverage from a local craft brewery or distillery. Either way, you will enjoy yourself! Come and explore your new favourite getaway, the vibrant city of Kelowna can’t wait to see you! West Kelowna, Peachland and Summerland are all a landscape of

38 2016/2017

mixed residential properties surrounded by rolling hills filled with orchards and vineyards. The town sites provide excellent shopping and eating options while the landscape provides the best lakes and beaches. All three are whimsical lakeside communities with commanding views. The weather is second to none in this valley, it provides the freshest ingredients for amazing food on umbrella laden patios up and down Okanagan Lake. Be sure to wander into the hillsides and explore unique wineries and fruit farms that will eave you on awe! The further south you travel, you get deeper into “wine country”. Penticton and Naramata are the perfect

combination of lakeside lounging and hillside harvesting. Penticton is flanked by two beautiful lakes, Okanagan Lake to the north and Skaha Lake to the south. This dictates summer fun. Beaches, rivers and water fun are all on the menu from sun rise to sun set! Naramata is located on the eastern shores of Okanagan Lake, this region is world famous for producing some of the finest wines . It is easy to spot the terraced benches above the lake with row upon row of many different varieties of grapes. The vineyards have discovered that if you build it, they will come! Many of these businesses now have elaborate tasting rooms, restaurants and guesthouses. There is a whole lot more to owning a

winery these days, with added features like concerts with big name musicians, helicopter tours, weddings and fine dining. Okanagan Falls, Oliver & Osoyoos are three places that have distinctly different vibes. Two things you will enjoy in Okanagan Falls are vineyards (of course) and wildlife. Oliver is the Wine Capital of Canada and for a very good reason. It has the highest concentration of wineries in BC. Osoyoos is also home to many award winning vineyards, but it is also commonly known for the hottest temperatures in Canada and because of that distinction has the warmest lake in the country.

GOLF The perfect balance between spectacular scenery and nail biting challenge Did you know that there are over 50 golf courses within an hours dive of Kelowna? Every single golf course offers picturesque backdrops of vineyards, orchards, rolling hills, shimmering lakes, rivers and desert like terrain too. There are few places (if any) that can offer golfers that kind of variety. The Okanagan Valley has award winning courses of every style, mountain, desert and links courses are all playable, some of them year-round!

it is no wonder that from Vernon to Osoyoos, the Okanagan has become one of Canada’s top golfing destinations.

The Famed golfer Lee Trovino once said “If you’re caught on a golf course during a storm and are afraid of lightning, hold up a 1 iron. Not even God can hit a 1 iron!” Luckily bad weather is rarely an issue here. With the sun constantly shinning down on the greens and fairways

Most facilities have great practice areas for driving, chipping and putting (warming up is important) And, many fantastic restaurants for before, during or after your round. So get out there and enjoy every challenge that the Okanagan golfer lives for.

The season typically runs from March to November. Courses in the North Okanagan are more likely to be green and lush with many water hazards, while courses in the South tend to have less water and sand traps everywhere, much more of a desert style course.

WINE & SPIRITS Okanagan wines and spirits have shattered all expectations, as the world acquires a fondness for local vintages and spirits In the past, the Okanagan Valley has been respectfully referred to as “Napa North, but now after all the praise and all the awards world wide, this area is known as The Okanagan! The wine industry has been recognized on a global scale, and have now surged their way to the top. It is a fact that there are many medals and accolades hanging on bottles from the North Okanagan all the way down to Osoyoos and all points in between! This valley is a rare tract of land that transforms from semi-arid in the north to fully arid, desert in the south. The difference between high day time and low night time temperatures provides the much needed acidity for production of high quality wine making grapes. Winemaking in the

Okanagan Valley first gain popularity with white wines like Pinto Gris, Chardonnay, Gerwurztraminer and Viognier, however in recent years there has been a surge in red vinifera vines. The climate and soil are perfect for growing Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Farnc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah grapes. Be sure to take some time and enjoy the weather and unparalleled scenery that creates these wonderful vineyards. The slopes and benches are teeming with vines and grapes, row after row. After even just a small tour you will begin to get a clearer picture of the positive affect and magnitude that the wine industry has on the entire Okanagan Valley.

Right from the early onsets, CedarCreek’s pioneering has been tempered by patience and perseverance. Our ideals matured into our philosophy:“Respect the land, honour tradition, pursue perfection.”For almost 30 years now, we have pursued perfection and produced some of the valley’s best wines resulting in CedarCreek being twice recognized as“Canada’s Winery of the Year”. Passion, tenacity, care and hard work are vital but above all we seek truth in wine. And the results show in every bottle. On that, you have our word. Credit cards: DD, MC, VIsa location: mAP 3 - E12 Winery | DIRTY LAUNDRY VINEYARD 7311 Fiske Street, Summerland | Tel: (250) 494-8815 | www.dirtylaundry.ca With a production increase to approx. 17,200 cases Dirty Laundry Vineyard is very excited about their 2012 vintages. 2011 was an exceptional growing season for all our vineyards with loads of fruit expression & spicy notes for the reds. Our recently released 2011 reds have already won major awards. For years we’ve been planning for our new white blend, “Secret Affair.” It’s a blend of Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay & Gewurztraminer. We`ve been describing it as `Fiji in a bottle` and our clever silk screened bottle with the lovers silhouette through the key hole makes the whole package just that much more enticing. It wasn’t just the landscape’s splendor that spoke to us - it was also the soil, the climate, and the southwestern facing slope that overlooked the beautiful Lake Okanagan. That was the day that we committed to the dream of creating wines that reveal the true beauty and essence of this unique hillside we now call Ex Nihilo. REAL ESTATE & RE-LOCATE to the OKANAGAN Whether you are here to visit or here to stay, there are two things that have likely drawn you to the Okanagan Valley, the weather and the lifestyle. One of the greatest accomplishments in life is buying a home, it is a true right of passage. Buying a home can be an overwhelming experience. It doesn’t matter if it is your first home or fifth home. Regardless, you want to make sure that the experience is a good one. There are so many variables when buying a home, condo, house, townhouse, should I buy land and build a house…?? These are the challenges that you will be faced with, but once you have narrowed your searched and committed to one option, let the good times roll! Market trends and the baby boomers love affair with warm weather climates for retirement and relaxation will keep real estate prices here moving up over the next several years. Realistically market conditions seem to be on the upswing. Now is a great time for both individuals and investors who are looking to buy

property in Vernon, Kelowna, Penticton, Oliver, Osoyoos and all points in between. Kick back and relax, you will love it here! The good news is that the Okanagan offers an incredibly diverse line of real estate offerings to match the appetite of any investor, visitor or new resident. With all the amenities that anyone could ever need, and set in the most magnificent backdrop, word of our Okanagan lifestyle is gaining popularity, further making this a desirable area to live and vacation in. Like many visitors to the Okanagan, you may have already found yourself drawn to the websites and pages of the local real estate newspapers. As real estate prices continue to sky rocket on the West Coast, there are many people that are selling out (or giving up) and heading to the Okanagan. As you travel around the valley you will see lots of SOLD signs on houses. Some might say that the market is brisk these days. The bigger picture is that demand for Okanagan real estate has a bright future.

There is one aspect of travel that people always hone in on, did you like where you stayed? Doesn’t matter if you were staying with a friend, relative, hotel or rented a lakeside villa. People always want to know if you enjoyed your stay, so it must be important! There are over 5000 guest rooms from Vernon to Osoyoos that vary in size, style and location. The best locations are always more popular—waterfront or right in the heart of the action. Many of the properties feature amenities such as swimming pools, hot tubs & saunas, tennis courts, spas, internet and fitness facilities. More often than not, restaurants are a part of the resort complex or accommodations are situated near restaurants and food outlets. The Okanagan truly does provide a wide variety of places to stay. Rooms

are scattered throughout the cities, with particular concentrations found near the shores of Okanagan, Skaha, and Osoyoos Lakes. Many hotels offer “stay and play” packages that can include, ski, golf, spa or just a romantic getaway. For hardy travelers, campers can pitch a tent or park their RV in a wide range of properties, from isolated lakes to full service beachside parks with all the amenities And, just a short drive from the city centers, if you head up into the surrounding hills, you will find the area’s fishing lodges in pristine surroundings, a much more remote experience but still a delightful one I am sure. Reservations for rooms, and a spot to pitch a tent or park recreational vehicles are highly recommended during the summer months and especially for weekends and long holiday weekends.
