C

HEERS NY, a first-of-its-kind craft beverage festival, was held on October 3rd and 4th at Industry City in Sunset Park.

The festival was produced by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the State of New York and Governor Andrew Cuomo through the Empire State Development Corporation and Taste NY. At the event, makers were brought together with consumers to celebrate the very best of New York State-made craft beverages – beer, wine, cider and spirits. In total, over 40 beverage manufacturers were showcased to nearly 2,000 attendees. CHEERS NY also promoted the State and Brooklyn as prime destinations for tourists interested in wine trails and brewery and distillery tours.

Because no wine or beer is complete without a cheese or meat, the festival included a Brooklyn Eats Marketplace, featuring roughly 30 incredible food options from many of the borough’s premier manufacturers.

Brooklyn Chamber & Airbnb Launch Partnership to Promote Tourism Project Will Be Airbnb’s First Program to Connect Hosts with Local Businesses

O

n September 16th, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and Airbnb announced a first-of-its kind partnership program geared towards promoting tourism across the borough. The Neighborhood Tourism Fellowship will be Airbnb’s first attempt at systematically connecting its hosts with local businesses in an effort to improve its user experience. If successful, the company plans to replicate the program globally.

In addition to organizing events to introduce hosts to local business owners, Airbnb will fund a Chamber community outreach organizer to meet with Brooklyn businesses one-on-one and educate them on opportunities to get in front of Airbnb’s users.

The announcement was made during the launch event of the newly redesigned ExploreBK.com website, Brooklyn’s dedicated tourism website. The new ExploreBK.com assists visitors in finding Brooklyn’s best dining, events, shopping, attractions, and more, while providing local businesses and attractions with an easy-to-use tool to promote themselves. It will also serve as the home of

a series of borough-wide alcohol trail maps, helping visitors sample the best wines, beers, and spirits in Brooklyn. The new site will allow people to book hotel rooms for their next trip through a partnership with Booking. com, as well.

“Brooklyn has long been a major tourism destination – due in large part to the amazing people that live here and the great businesses that surround them – and the new ExploreBK.com will make visiting the world’s greatest borough easier and more enjoyable than ever,” said Carlo A. Scissura, President and CEO of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. “This partnership with Airbnb is an exciting opportunity for us to continue promoting the best that Brooklyn has to offer, while also greatly improving the experiences of visitors. Almost one third of all Airbnb visitors to NYC stay in Brooklyn, and 45 percent spend at least some time in the borough. In 2014, Airbnb generated $100 million in economic activity in Brooklyn. In Bed-Stuy alone, travelers generated $30 million in direct spending in the neighborhood – $10.2 million to local hosts and $19.8 million to local businesses in the neighborhood.

Deputy Mayor Glen Addresses Business Community at Newsmakers Event O n September 24th, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce held the seventh edition of its popular Newsmakers series, led by Alicia Glen, Deputy Mayor of Housing & Economic Development.

The Deputy Mayor discussed a variety of topics during the morning event, such as the importance of affordable housing in the city and the administration’s investments in the manufacturing sector in Brooklyn – particularly in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Brooklyn Army Terminal and Industry City. “Brooklyn has grown into an incredible ecosystem of innovators, manufacturers, makers and institutions,� said Deputy Mayor Glen. “It’s a vibrant economic success story, and we are so excited about its next chapter. We’re focused on driving growth across diverse industries and making sure Brooklynites really have an opportunity to plug into the good jobs being created across the borough. Chamber Annual Meeting Set for Oct 28th

Chamber & NYS Department of Labor Host Career Expo

T

he Brooklyn Chamber, in partnership with the New York State Department of Labor and Brooklyn College, held the 2nd Annual Brooklyn Bridge to Employment Career Expo on September 16th. Held at the Brooklyn College Student Center, the career fair focused on the employment needs of Brooklyn businesses.

Employers had the chance to meet with qualified job seekers who were prescreened by the Brooklyn Chamber’s Good Help staff, while Brooklynites were also connected to hundreds of open positions.

Nearly 80 companies participated in this year’s expo – an increase from 60 last year – along with over 650 job seekers.

The Brooklyn Bridge to Employment Career Expo was sponsored by MetroPlus Health Plan and Penda Aiken, Inc. “Connecting our terrific Brooklyn businesses with residents seeking quality employment opportunities has consistently been a top priority for the Brooklyn Chamber – and the Brooklyn Bridge to Employment Career Expo is a major part of accomplishing our goal,” said Brooklyn Chamber President & CEO Carlo A. Scissura.

Brooklyn Museum Hosts The American Fine Craft Show

Five Brooklyn artisans will celebrate their creativity, artistry and skill with 85 other exhibitors

Two jewelers, a handbag designer, potter and a woodworker/furniture maker whose studios are in five Brooklyn neighborhoods will be among 90 exhibitors at the third American Fine Craft Show Brooklyn at the Brooklyn Museum on November 21st and 22nd.

Handpicked by Joanna and Richard Rothbard of American Art Marketing, the show’s founders and directors, artisans will fill the regal Beaux-Arts Court with handmade work that celebrates American creativity.

“We’ve timed the show early enough for holiday shopping but not too close to Hanukah and Christmas, so that visitors can also enjoy the magnificent current and long-term exhibitions at the Museum,” said Richard Rothbard. A ticket to the craft show includes general admission to the museum.

On the eve of the show, the museum will open “Coney Island: Visions of an American Dreamland, 1861-2008,” an exhibition of pictures, photographs and objects such as carousel animals, representing this icon of American Continued on Page 16

Intersection I Prospect Heights draws on oral histories and photographs from past and present to explore the impact of rapid change on a community’s identity and sense of place

I

f you walk into Met Food on Vanderbilt Avenue in Prospect Heights, you’ll find a sign advertising not grocery specials, but colorful guidebooks offering to show you “Neville’s Places,” “Tanya’s Places” and “David’s Places.” Will these take you to some exciting destination? They might. It’s Intersection | Prospect Heights, the new multidisciplinary public art project using photographs and oral histories to start a conversation on what Prospect Heights means to you – and how the rapid change in this one Brooklyn neighborhood is impacting its residents. This project of the Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council (PHNDC), Brooklyn Public Library, and urbanist studio Buscada is popping up all over Prospect Heights this fall, in local businesses and the Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Branch. Sending participants on a playful scavenger hunt to find all six guides around the neighborhood, the project hopes to help people see the present in a new way through the experiences of the not-too-distant past.

In recent years, Prospect Heights has seen tremendous physical change, including the clearing of the 22-acre Atlantic Yards site, the 12 Brooklyn’s Progress

construction of the Barclays Center arena, and the development of much of the neighborhood’s vacant properties. At the same time, Prospect Heights’ population has shifted significantly in terms of race and income, indicating the displacement of a large number of people.

In a convergence of art, research and advo-

cacy, Intersection | Prospect Heights presents a series of participatory events about the changes that have occurred in the neighborhood in the last 15 years. Beginning on October 3, the project will engage current and former residents of Prospect Heights – and New Yorkers from all neighborhoods – with its neighborhood guides, popup exhibitions, guided

tours and public conversations. Building on Buscada founder Gabrielle Bendiner-Viani’s work in the neighborhood in the early 2000s, the “guidebooks” use her photographs and oral histories to show neighborhood places through the eyes of residents from over a decade ago.

“Changes driven by development and rezoning as experienced by Prospect Heights are now faced by other New York City neighborhoods,” said Dr. Bendiner-Viani. “Valuing everyday experience and people’s stories of their important places can help us have an open conversation on the forces shaping our city. We hope people will take our ‘tour guides’ walks, and let themselves laugh, cry and grapple with the experience of what is too often framed as the city’s inevitable trajectory.”

The project encourages past and present community members to contribute their own reflections on neighborhood places though storytelling cards, the project website, participation in two public “Place Conversations” at the Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Branch, and by having their stories recorded in an interview at the library. wo Brooklyn Chamber Members dedicated to improving the lives of young people, the Boy Scouts of America and Mythic Bridge Film Makers, have partnered for an immersive two-day film making workshop.

“Our mission is to prepare kids for life, so partnering with Mythic Bridge was a natural fit for us. The Chamber has been vital in helping us develop partnerships with local businesses to deliver career education programs like this one to youth here in Brooklyn,” said Justin Rodstrom, Brooklyn Director for the Boy Scouts of America.

The hands-on workshop will help young people tell their own stories and develop new skills. Scouts will learn about film elements like storyboarding, set design, casting, and video editing.

Founded in 2011, Mythic Bridge provides hands-on, narrative filmmaking education to disadvantaged youth in NYC. Co-founder Gage Cass Woodle had this to say of the workshop, “I’m excited, we have a sold-out workshop. The Boy Scouts are a great organization, and a great way for us to continue our

mission to create a safe community where youth can discover their creativity and passion through film.”

At some point in the last decade, Brooklyn emerged as a globally recognized icon of cool, but the borough has been around since long before its rebirth as a hipster mecca. Many of Brooklyn’s trendy neighborhoods were settled by the Dutch in the 17th-century, and Kings County has some of the oldest buildings in the United States. Carroll Gardens

Named after Charles Carroll, the only Roman Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence, Carroll Gardens used to be a working-class Irish neighborhood. In the 19thcentury, many of the Irish moved out while first-generation Italians moved in. Designated in 1973, the Carroll Gardens Historic District includes over 160 buildings in a surprisingly small area located between President, Carroll, Smith, and Hoyt streets (the equivalent of two very long city blocks). Majestic gardens are a neighborhood signature. Thanks to the careful planning of Richard Butts, one of the surveyors of the young City of Brooklyn in the 1840s, the district’s brownstones feature 33-foot, 5¼-inch deep front yards.

In the summer, the teeny-tiny historic district becomes a wonderland of lushly planted greenery. Round out your tour with a visit to G. Esposito and Sons Pork Store (established in 1922) for a primo Italian sub.

in 1973. These days, the small neighborhood is a popular hunting ground for buyers looking to score one of the area’s coveted Greek and Italianate 19th-century row houses (Michelle Williams recently sold hers for a cool $8.8 million).

Boerum Hill used to be a little more accessible. Marketed as “economical housing” for Manhattan merchants in the 1800s, the historic district’s rows of houses are concentrated on four long east-west streets—Pacific, Dean, Bergen, and Wyckoff. Once you’ve ogled all of the brownstones, head to The Brooklyn Inn. The iconic 19th-century watering hole features a monumental carved wood bar transplanted from Germany in the 1870s.

Brooklyn Heights It’s hard not to be charmed by Brooklyn Heights. Originally settled by Dutch farmers who purchased land from the Canarsie Indians in 1636, the neighborhood is home to rows of well-kept brownstones and pre-Civil War houses. Considered “New York’s first suburb,” Brooklyn Heights was transformed by the opening of Robert Fulton’s ferry service in 1814. Once the ferry began shuttling residents to Wall Street, the neighborhood became a popular destination for moneyed Manhattanites. Many of the area’s stately houses are the result of this first building boom.

In 1965, the newly-formed Landmarks Preservation Commission designated Brooklyn Heights as New York City’s first historic district. The Brooklyn Heights Historic District is bounded by Cadman Plaza West (Old Fulton Street) on the north, the Brooklyn-Queens Ex-

pressway on the west, and Atlantic Avenue on the south.

If you’re unsure where to start, 24 Middagh Street is the oldest home in the ‘hood. The 1824 wood frame house is a prime example of the Federal-style architecture that was in vogue in the early 19th-century. A three-minute walk away, you’ll find 64 Poplar Street, a clapboard house built in 1834 by Walt Whitman and his father.

Cobble Hill Cobble Hill is a must-visit for architecture buffs. When the Dutch arrived in the 1640s, they named the area “Cobleshill” after a conicalshaped hill at present-day Atlantic Avenue and Court Street. Originally designated in 1969 (it was later expanded) the sprawling Cobble Hill Historic District includes 22 city blocks bordered by Atlantic Avenue, Court Street, Degraw Street, and Hicks Street.

Like Brooklyn Heights, its more famous neighbor to the north, Cobble Hill was largely built up in in the decades preceding the Civil War. The neighborhood is particularly wellknown for its 19th-century Greek Revival row houses. You’ll also find plenty of Gothic Revival churches, Victorian schoolhouses, and Italianate architecture on display. While you’re there, make sure to check out Verandah Place—a picturesque little lane comprised of 19th-century mews houses.

Weekend Walks Connect Residents With Commerce

he Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce wraps up the Weekend Walks season with the North Flatbush Fall Fest on Saturday, October 17th. As part of an ongoing management agreement, the Chamber and its tourism initiative, Explore Brooklyn, support the North Flatbush Business Improvement District (NFBID) in co-producing this year’s street festival at the 6th Avenue triangle at Flatbush and St. Marks avenues from noon until 4pm.

The North Flatbush Fall Fest hosts arts and crafts and pumpkin decorating, music, dancing and other activities, with special treats from local businesses, like Brooklyn Chamber Members Eladia’s Kids, Brooklyn Crepe and Juice, HIIT BK and others. Restricting vehicular access activates the street bed for residents and visitors to enjoy the Park Slope neighborhood from an otherwise unavailable perspective around the 6th Avenue Green Streets triangle.

These unique events employ creative ways to highlight local businesses, and neighborhood resources while enjoying food, games and entertainment. They foster wonderful opportunities for Brooklynites to gather, see their neighborhoods in a new way, and rediscover their community and the local businesses.

On September 19th and 26th, in Williamsburg’s Southside, the Southside Connex Community Festival on Havemeyer Street engaged businesses in planned activities, such as a street soccer tournament, domino tournament, and dance and exercise workshops, thus connecting residents with culture and commerce. Ad-

ditionally, the Chamber and Explore Brooklyn have partnered with community groups and merchants in a number of commercial corridors, including Midwood, Brighton Beach, Sheepshead Bay, Boro Park, and Crown Heights, to bring fun-filled, pedestrian-friendly, neighborhood focused events.

The NFBID covers Flatbush Avenue from Atlantic Avenue to Plaza Street at Grand Army Plaza, including five traffic triangles at 5th, 6th, 7th, Carlton and 8th avenues. The BID provides support to property owners, businesses, and the community residents with supplemental sanitation, government advocacy, special events and marketing. The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce has prioritized working with businesses all across the borough, including neighborhood based businesses serving Brooklyn residents.

With the Neighborhood Entrepreneurship Project (NEP), the Chamber works on strengthening commercial corridors through direct technical and capacity-building services, such as merchant organizing, place-making, marketing and special events like these Weekend Walks. Each year, the New York City Department of Transportation works with community groups across the City to present Weekend Walks, which aim to be multi-block neighborhood events on commercial streets temporarily closed to vehicles. These events are alternatives to the ubiquitous mass-produced fairs and give local communities opportunities to showcase themselves with a focus on merchant engagement and participation.
