NEWS FOR BROOKLYN BUSINESSES
welcome to brooklyn! Chamber Partners with BP Adams on Revamped Brooklyn Tourism Visitors Center and Gift Shop
O
n February 3rd, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Carlo A. Scissura and Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams unveiled a partnership, along with One Brooklyn Fund Inc. – the official non-profit organization affiliated with the Office of the Brooklyn Borough President – on a revamped Brooklyn Tourism Visitors Center and Gift Shop, an interactive information hub located in Brooklyn Borough Hall that provides tourists with guidance on what to do and see in the borough. First opened by former Brooklyn Borough
President Marty Markowitz, the office has been updated with iPad stations that provide a high-tech point-of-sale system for the gift shop as well as visitor access to ExploreBK. com, the borough’s dedicated tourism website. Through the partnership, the Brooklyn Tourism and Visitor Center will also serve as the physical home for Explore Brooklyn, helping to generate and share content on dining, lodging, recreation, and shopping options across the borough. Additionally, the Brooklyn Chamber is working with its members to stock the center with Brooklyn-Made
products to help promote local artisans and small businesses. Brooklyn Chamber President Scissura and Borough President Adams highlighted the importance of ensuring Brooklyn fully benefits from the recent boom in tourism; an estimated 15 million people visited the borough in 2014 alone. “Brooklyn is one of the world’s most iconic places, and in recent years, it has become a destination for millions of international and domestic visitors alike,” said Scissura. “With the opening of our new, state-of-the-art Explore Brooklyn Visitors Center, the Chamber

and Borough President Eric Adams will ensure that tourists enjoy an authentic Brooklyn experience and take advantage of everything the borough has to offer. Through the Visitors Center, each neighborhood across Brooklyn – from Coney Island and Sheepshead Bay to Crown Heights and Brownsville – will be promoted to tourists, so they spend their time and money in our businesses. I’m thrilled to partner with the Borough President to create this new home for Brooklyn tourism.” Continued on Page 18

brooklyn goes global
Brooklyn Makers Sizzle at Winter Fancy Food Show I
n January, the Brooklyn Goes Global (BGG) program participated in the Winter Fancy Food Show for the second consecutive year, reaching a new milestone with 16 participating manufacturers. The Winter Fancy Food Show is the largest specialty food trade event on the West Coast and acts as a showcase of industry innovation, bringing specialty food’s top manufacturers, buyers, and thought leaders together under one roof for three days of delectable discovery. This year’s show featured more than 80,000 products, 19,000 buyers and 1,400 exhibitors. And Brooklyn was definitely in the house! With companies like Brooklyn Brine, Salty Road, The Jam Stand and Aunt Butchies, Brooklyn was fully represented by a variety of delicious products. In partnership with Taste NY – Governor Andrew Cuomo’s initiative to
encourage New Yorkers and tourists alike to try our state’s homegrown products and help continue to grow our thriving agricultural industry – the Chamber also created a CHEERS NY pavilion for the first time. The pavilion featured six craft beverage makers, including Owl’s Brew, Cocktail Crate, Kelvin’s Natural Slush, Hella Bitters, Original Sin and Barrow’s Intense Ginger Liquor. The BGG program first began participating in the Summer Fancy Food Show in 2000. With a 200-square-foot space, the program was supporting just four manufacturers in Brooklyn at the time. As the years went on, the manufacturing industry in the borough began to grow considerably. New artisanal companies were starting to develop and preparing to show the world what Brooklyn was all about. By 2013, BGG had reached a
new milestone by taking 12 manufacturers to the show – manufacturers that had never worked with the program and never participated in the show before. Through BGG, the Chamber allowed these small batch, artisanal makers to promote their products in a completely new way, offering the opportunity and platform to gain access to buyers from retail stores such as Wegmans, William Sonoma, Fairway, Whole Foods and Stew Leonard’s. Just one year later, the program reached another new milestone by taking 1,400 square feet of space and offering 18 manufacturers the opportunity to exhibit. In 2015, the program offered yet another new opportunity to Brooklyn manufacturers when it participated in the Winter Fancy Food Show for the first time. This allowed Brooklyn makers to reach a new, West Coast demographic of buy-
ers, distributors, wholesalers and retailers. Since 2015, the program has gone from beginning with seven participants to 16 this year. As the manufacturing sector continues to grow, so will the program and its outreach. BGG has proven to be a tremendous direct service program to many businesses, not only in the way of subsidized participation at events like the Winter and Summer Fancy Food Shows, but also by providing technical assistance services for importing and exporting. For information related to participation in the Winter and Summer Fancy Food Shows, please contact Ilan Stern, Vice President of Operations, at istern@brooklynchamber.com. Getting It Right and Working with Millennials “They’re intolerant, entitled, and lazy.” “They aren’t willing to put their best foot forward in order to help the organization succeed.” Sound familiar? Is this the manner in which you or someone you know has described the millennial employee, that demographic from age 12 to 35? Working with millennials as members of my staff, as well as working with millennials as clients, I have come to know that some of these descriptions are true and some are just plain wrong. In order to have a better work relationship with this unique workforce, let’s dispel truth from myth.
Facts:
• Forbes magazine says, “over the next twenty years, millennials will account for 75% of the global workplace.” That’s a statistic that must be reckoned with. • A recent webinar hosted by hr.com and facilitated by Rodney Mason indicates that millennials show great commitment to their work when they are made to feel that their work and contributions matter. • An IBM report on millennials indicates that when comparing millennials to Generation X (persons age 35 to 54) and baby boomers (individuals age 55 to 76), millennials align with these other generations regarding what it takes to engage employees at work, inspire leadership, and improve collaboration. • According to that same webinar facilitated by Rodney Mason, only 13% of millennials rank their job as top contributor to their happiness factor. You can’t argue with the facts. • Only 40% are happy with the rewards they receive on their jobs, so says Rodney Mason’s report. • Millennials are more likely to jump ship if a job doesn’t fulfill their passion.
Keeping millennial workers happy benefits the employee and the organization. Improving their happiness factor: • Allow for creative ownership of tasks and work activity. • Recognize and acknowledge their accomplishments regularly and openly at work and via social media. • Encourage them to participate and volunteer in world causes. Reward them for doing so. • Regularly and consistently explain the basic tenents of how your organization works, the vision and mission of your company, and what you expect of each employee. Doing so will invoke employee confidence in what they do and how their work benefits the organization. • Stay on top of innovations in technology. Invite these bright young minds to enlighten top management regarding the functions of new innovations to improve and enhance business performance. • Working with a company well ranked in its field is very important to milllenials. If your company isn’t well ranked, and you aren’t meeting the happiness criteria outlined above, chances are, your millennial employee(s) may be looking for new work opportunities. Let’s start removing some of the old methods of engaging staff and instead start thinking in a critical and significant manner in order to engage this vibrant and growing workforce – the millennials. Brooklyn Chamber Collects Over $11K for Local Food Banks
T
he Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that it has raised $11,510 during its 3rd Annual Brooklyn Eats Cares Fundraiser. Monetary donations – collected from November 17th through December 31st – were split evenly among six partnering food banks and soup kitchens. NYBDC contributed an initial donation of $6,000 – $1,000 for each food pantry. The remaining donations were collected through the Chamber’s website and from raffle sales during its Winter Gala on December 17th. Brooklyn Eats is the borough’s largest food and beverage manufacturing trade show featuring products made in Brooklyn. “Through Brooklyn Eats Cares, the Chamber is able to do its part to make the holidays brighter for struggling Brooklynites,” said Brooklyn Chamber President & CEO Carlo A. Scissura. “I would like to thank the partnering food banks, NYBDC, and all those who contributed to this meaningful cause.” “One of the elements of a successful business is recognizing the importance of being a good corporate citizen. The Brooklyn Chamber has gone above and beyond with the Brooklyn Eats Cares program, now in its third year, and has made a significant impact on the Brooklyn community by providing food for our fellow New Yorkers in need,” said NYBDC President and CEO Pat MacKrell. “We are pleased to partner with the Chamber and hope that together we can continue to make a difference.”

In addition, Dwell, Metropolis, Inhabitat, Aphrochic and The Architect’s Newspaper are a few of the confirmed media sponsors who will add to the show’s robust programming and creative sitespecific installations. “The popularity of our brand must translate into prosperity for all Brooklynites, and tourism is a vehicle to achieve that mission,” said Borough President Adams. “Reinvigorating the Brooklyn Tourism Visitors Center and Gift Shop has long been a dream of mine, and the partnership with the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce is turning that into reality. Tourists want a memorable experience when they travel, and our new and improved center will set the stage for a day trip, weekend getaway, or longer excursion that excites their senses and expands their horizons. Efforts like these are reflective of my commitment to helping maximize the dollars generated through local tourism right here in our borough.” Brooklyn Chamber President Scissura and Borough President Adams also thanked New York City Department of Citywide Ad-

series and for all her incredible work.” “The Brooklyn Chamber is proud to have a true innovator, such as Chancellor Fariña, speak at our Newsmakers event,” said Brooklyn Chamber Board Chair Denise Arbesu. “With access to the best education, which includes a diversified environment, Brooklyn and all of New York City will retain its competitive edge. Chancellor Fariña’s commitment to our youth will certainly lead to better employment opportunities and will create a stronger city overall.” Newsmakers is sponsored exclusively by Investors Bank, and is held in conjunction with NYU Tandon School of Engineering and the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership. Investors Bank Chief Operating Officer Domenick Cama said, “We are honored to sponsor the Brooklyn Newsmakers event featuring Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña. Investors Bank recognizes the significant contribution Chancellor Fariña makes to the students of New York City and understands the enormous responsibility she has for educating our children. Investors Bank stands committed to helping with this great cause. We also thank Carlo Scissura and the Brooklyn Chamber for its efforts in bringing newsworthy matters to the business community.”
ministrative Services (DCAS) Commissioner Lisette Camillo for her agency’s collaboration on redesigning the center to include brandnew graphic wall displays, featuring images of historic Brooklyn landmarks, as well as producing promotional banners to attract street traffic. The Brooklyn Tourism Visitors Center and Gift Shop continues to feature historic photographs of local attractions, memorabilia related to the Brooklyn Dodgers and other borough institutions, and guides to places of interest. Honoring the connection between Brooklyn’s past and present, it includes an ongoing exhibit on local sections of the Underground Railroad in Brooklyn that enabled slaves in their search for freedom, created in collaboration with the Weeksville Heritage Center. The center also presents a rotating display with various aspects of the borough’s history, curated by Brooklyn Borough Historian Ron Schweiger.
“Education is the panacea for society’s issues, and at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering we have found no better partner in the advancement of STEM education for both New York City’s teachers and students than Chancellor Fariña,” said Sayar Lonial, Director of Marketing and Communications at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. “We are excited to have her on campus again and look forward to continuing to pursue worthy goals, such as CS4All and other STEM initiatives, under her leadership.” “We’re pleased to have Chancellor Fariña join the Newsmakers Series at a particularly timely moment,” said Tucker Reed, President of the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership. “With Downtown Brooklyn’s residential population nearly quadrupling in size over the last fifteen years, school overcrowding is a major issue facing the area. We enjoyed a thoughtful discussion with the Chancellor about how we can work together to alleviate that issue in the coming years as even more residents pour into the neighborhood.” Previous Newsmakers keynote speakers include Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen, City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton, New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, and Public Advocate Letitia James, among others.
