O
n July 20th, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and its Real Estate & Development Committee hosted the 2016 Building Brooklyn Awards at the Duggal Greenhouse in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The Public Affairs Department – Advocating for the Needs of Brooklyn Businesses H
ere at the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, we pride ourselves on being one of the borough’s leading and most recognized advocates for economic development. We have a long history of working with elected officials, government agencies and community leaders to effectively represent the interests of Brooklyn businesses.
Meet the Team! This work is executed by the Chamber’s Public Affairs team, which includes Senior Vice President Melissa Chapman and Government Affairs Director Avi Leshes. Melissa leads the day-to-day operations of the department and focuses on advancing the scope and influence of the Brooklyn Chamber at the city and state levels of government. Avi supports Melissa in this role, and manages the Chamber’s federal affairs. The Public Affairs Team works closely with the Chamber’s Membership and Economic Development departments to swiftly identify and address obstacles to business growth, conduct strategic outreach to community stakeholders, and publish findings. Further, the team collaborates with specific groups and consultants to enhance the interaction between Members and public officials, including the Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee, co-chaired by Antonia YuilleWilliams of Con Edison and Gil Cygler of Fleet Coverage Consultants, Inc., and the Chamber’s government affairs representatives – Yoswein New York in the city and state and Davidoff Hutcher & Citron LLP on a federal level. With this combination of resources, Members can rely on the Brooklyn Chamber to notify them about legislation that could potentially impact their businesses and to provide them with opportunities to offer feedback – in some cases, directly to elected officials. In addition, the Chamber represents its Members by way of testimonies and letters of support to public officials. For example, if a Chamber Member has an issue that comes up for a hearing before its local community board, a representative from the Chamber can testify on its behalf.
Your Feedback Matters The Annual Member Issues Survey is a key tool used by the Public Affairs department to shape the Chamber’s position on legislative issues. It is usually issued at the end of the year via an e-mail to all Members, and contains a series of questions related to how proposed or existing pieces of legislation impact businesses at the city, state and federal levels of government. In addition to this standard survey, Members are also asked to weigh in throughout the year via more targeted surveys.

other Member feedback form the foundation of the Chamber’s three Annual Legislative Agendas – state, federal, and most recently, city. These documents lay out the policy recommendations for issues that impact businesses in Brooklyn – for example, what existing legislation or regulations harm businesses and in what ways; what legislation or regulations would help start, retain and grow business in the borough; and how government could be more supportive of businesses. Each year, over 100 Chamber Members join the Brooklyn Chamber in Albany, Washington, D.C., and for the first time this year, New York City, to advocate for improved economic conditions in Brooklyn. During these visits, the delegation meets with elected officials that represent Brooklyn, as well as key agencies to present the Chamber’s Legislative Agenda.
The Albany and Washington, D.C. trips feature a “Brooklyn Night” event, which showcases the very best of Brooklyn-Made food and beverage products, as well as iconic brands that made their debut in the Borough of Kings! This traditional ode to the great borough of Brooklyn highlights the critically important economic gains being made across the borough in areas as diverse as food manufacturing and a wide array of innovation economy sectors.
Brooklyn Newsmakers Series In addition to our legislative visits, Members gain direct access to representatives through our Brooklyn Newsmakers event, as well as several other forums held throughout
the year, that feature governmental decisionmakers. Brooklyn Newsmakers is a quarterly event that features high-level guest speakers addressing a citywide audience. Past speakers have included City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Police Commissioner William Bratton, Public Advocate Letitia James and Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman.
How Can We Help You? Now that you have an idea about the work of the Chamber’s Public Affairs Department, don’t hesitate to contact us should you ever have a question related to a specific bill or if you need assistance navigating government. Please contact Melissa at 718-875-1000 ext. 126 or mchapman@brooklynchamber.com, or Avi at 718-875-1000 ext. 105 or aleshes@ brooklynchamber.com.

No Ordinary Dude from Brooklyn R
ob D. Walker is not just another artist from Brooklyn, but rather just a dude from Brooklyn. His clothing and home design brand, Brooklynaires/Just a Dude from Brooklyn, began taking shape in 2005 when he appeared on the reality show, The Cut. Hosted by fashion mogul Tommy Hilfiger, the show gave Rob a much-needed platform to showcase his unique, hand-painted shirts, caps, hoodies, jeans and footwear. The second oldest of five children raised in a single parent home, he credits his success and attitude about life to his mother Beverly, a Brooklynite originally from Jamaica. Rob regards his mother as strictly amazing and amazingly strict and says that her life lessons about education and respect are the foundation of his upbringing. Considered a bit of a renaissance man, Rob not only creates beautiful designs on clothing and visually stunning works on canvas, wood, paper and recycled materials, but he is also a published author with Scholastic
Books. His two books, Once Upon a Cloud and Mama Says, have received five-star reviews. As a vendor for the Department of
Education, Rob has traveled around Brooklyn and across the city reading his books at schools, Barnes and Noble, Book Court and
at other events, giving talks to children and their families on the value of education, peace, following their dreams, and overcoming adversity. He recalls losing all of his art and equipment in a storage unit auction. While the loss was devastating, he understood that this was just another test of his faith. Rob may have lost very valuable equipment, but he still possessed the raw talent that allowed him to bounce back in the face of adversity. Rob is an advocate for educating and empowering youth, as they are indeed our hope for the future. His brand is not simply about being profitable, but creating opportunities for the youth in Brooklyn and hopefully around the world. As a result of this ambition, Rob started a line under the Just a Dude umbrella entitled Unbroken Peace, which seeks to be an outlet for funding youth projects wherever there is a need. He would like Brooklyn to be seen as the place where peace and love can be found.

Build It Back Seeks Temporary Housing to Help Homeowners Relocate During Construction
T
he Mayor’s Office of Housing Recovery is asking Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island landlords, brokers, real estate agents and affiliated professionals to provide available apartments to Build it Back homeowners. Short-term lease units of less than one year are desired. In addition, the Office of Housing Recovery Operations seeks Americans with Disabilities Act compliant and/or petfriendly units to accommodate household needs. The Housing Recovery Office is moving aggressively toward Mayor Bill de Blasio’s goal of program completion by the end of 2016. Build it Back has now raised more than 250 homes citywide, started construction on over 3,000 and finished construction on over 2,000 — including 1,121 starts and 731 completes in Brooklyn. In April of 2014, the City dedicated funding for a Temporary Relocation Assistance program, which reimburses homeowners for rental expenses while they’re displaced during construction. Monthly rents start at approximately $1,500 a month for a one person household and up to $2,700 for a household size of five or more. In June 2015, Build it Back, the Mayor’s Fund to Advance NYC, and wNew York Disaster Interfaith Services (NYDIS) launched the privately-funded Sandy Temporary Rental Program to provide housing assistance for vulnerable and under resourced homeowners for the duration of construction. The program supplements the benefits available to Build it Back homeowners through the Temporary Relocation Assistance program. Landlords interested in helping can call the Build it Back Temporary Helpline at (646) 757-2886.

Five Reasons Why Small Businesses Need Websites S
Create a forum, add a comment section and provide customer incentives that show the public that you care about those you serve.
tartups are all the rage right now, and you can bet that your small business will be facing some type of serious competition over the next year. Unfortunately, many small business owners limit their opportunities by relying on return visits and word-ofmouth to grow their companies. Since building your brand is an important part of your marketing strategy, you should be aware of these five reasons why your small business needs a website so that you can make the best choices for your company’s future.
4. Keep Up With the Competition In today’s modern times, you can bet that at least one competitor is already one step ahead of you. If they have a website and you don’t, then guess who is getting the business. Setting up a website today will show your target audience that you are on top of your game.
5. Stay Current
1. Increase Customer Interaction The digital explosion has changed the ways that people interact with each other and with their local businesses. Today, you can expect that your customers will search for businesses that provide similar services and do some comparison shopping. Having a website means that your business will be among those that pop up during searches so that your brand stays visible.
2. Bolster Brand Awareness As a small business owner, you have care-
fully crafted your brand to represent your company’s values. Yet, no one will ever know about it unless you put it out there. On your website, you can provide a company history, explain your values and inform potential customers about new products that enhance the public’s perception of your brand.
3. Build Your Reputation Like it or not, your business already has an online presence since review sites provide an outlet for past and future customers to post reviews. With a website, you can take control of your online presence so that you maintain that critical positive reputation.
Now that people are communicating more online, you have to stay up with the times. On your website, you can talk directly to your customers and keep them informed about all of your exciting company events. Stepping into the digital age may seem incongruent with your company’s goals, but it’s important to reach out to your customers in ways that they find convenient. Take your small business to the next level and contact us (bklynmarketing.com) today so that we can build you a winning website that stands out from the competition!

In Memoriam– Anthony J. Nardella I
t is with great sadness that we note the passing of Anthony J. Nardella on July 27th. After completing a distinguished career in law enforcement, Anthony joined Muss Development LLC in 1999 as Director of Security, with responsibilities for fire safety and building management at Brooklyn Renaissance Plaza, the office tower built by Muss along with The Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn’s first major hotel. The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce moved to the building in 2013 and shares offices with Muss. Anthony was a constant presence, ensuring smooth operations of the building complex. Carlo A. Scissura, President and CEO of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce said, “Anthony exhibited extensive technical expertise and personal attention to all facility management details. But he will be most remembered by all of us, our visitors and staff, as a person who made the workday better, through his sense of humor and warm smile, and by his unflagging efforts to maintain 335 Adams Street to the highest office building standards. We looked forward to seeing him every day. Wherever he went – local restaurants, civic and business events, or government meetings – he knew everyone. His comments and commitments were always well received. He was a fine professional and a good friend. He will be missed.”

CDL500 Helps You Look Good, Generate Leads, And Tell Your Story Online
W
e know small business owners take on too many responsibilities. Starting or running your own business is ultimately rewarding, but at what cost? Lots of business owners are juggling sales, operations, marketing, and website management. Chad Lewine, digital strategist for CDL500, Inc. wants to provide some relief. CDL500, Inc. specializes in small business website design and internet marketing. One client testimonial by a Williamsburg business owner sums that up perfectly. “Chad has done a great job of learning about our business from the inside and combining that with his technical expertise, has already delivered great results in a few short months. Reasonable and fair fees. Highest recommendation!”
Lewine doesn’t just apply a template to your marketing needs and call it a day. He learns about your services, company history, customer base, locale and competitors. Essentially, Lewine is a consultant who executes on what he recommends. Lewine was raised just outside of Philadelphia by two lifelong entrepreneurs, Nancy and Rich Lewine. He was instilled with the value of balancing business and personal/
family time. Now, having served the NYC area since 2011, Lewine is quickly becoming an ally of small business owners due to his affordable fees, fast turnaround time and irrefutable results. Lewine’s flagship success story – FTKny. com – is proof that you don’t have to shell out a small fortune to build a superior website and benefit from local internet marketing. Take it from Franco Verdino, owner of FTKny.com,
who said, “Chad helped me achieve a sold out summer camp in Park Slope with his dope web marketing skill. What else is there to say but ‘thank you Chad!’” Even more recently, it only took Lewine and his client a few months to reach abovethe-fold ranking on page one for the keyword “Park Slope preschool” (ParkSlope Preschool.com). CDL500 currently works and has worked with clients in many industries, including but not limited to education, entertainment, animals, nonprofit, and technology. As a Brooklyn-based company with a universal perspective, whether you are in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Pennsylvania, or California, CDL500 has the experience and network to help you reach your goals.

Steakhouses in Brooklyn Gourmet steakhouses are a quintessential part of Gotham’s culinary heritage. New Yorkers have been addicted to prime cuts ever since Delmonico’s began serving its legendary rib-eye in the 1850s. If you’re serious about steak, you won’t be surprised to hear that many of the Big Apple’s most celebrated chophouses are right here in Brooklyn. Here are six Kings County steakhouses that belong on every committed carnivore’s bucket list.
Peter Luger Steakhouse
(Williamsburg) Peter Luger is the granddaddy of Brooklyn steakhouses. Hungry Manhattanites and Long Islanders have been trekking to Williamsburg for their dry-aged steaks since 1887 (the Williamsburg Bridge wasn’t even built yet). They’ve picked up a Michelin star along the way, but the steakhouse remains firmly rooted in the past. The bow-tied waiters, German beer hall decor, and manual cash register only add to the charm. First-timers are strongly advised to splurge on their legendary porterhouse. Charred to perfection and spooned table side in its own fat, it may be the most delicious slab of meat in America. Insider tip: make sure to bring a debit card or cash. Peter Luger’s doesn’t accept credit cards.
DeStefano’s Steakhouse
(Williamsburg) DeStefano’s caused quite a stir when it debuted in 2007. Located on a stretch of Williamsburg dominated by Peter Luger, the 34-seat steakhouse had a lot to prove. The restaurant was opened by longtime Williams-

burg resident Joey DeStefano and cultivates a homey feel. Family photos line the walls, a fireplace gives off a cozy vibe, and the tin ceiling is picturesquely battered. Although we love the décor—the steak is the main attraction. Standout dishes include the dry-aged porterhouse and the filet mignon accompanied by Tuscan beans and sausage.
Atlas Steakhouse (Ditmas Park) The borough’s newest steakhouse brings a Mediterranean dining experience to Coney
(Bay Ridge) This old-school chophouse is a Bay Ridge institution. Despite inauspicious beginnings (it opened the day after the 1987 Black Monday financial crash) the steakhouse quickly became a neighborhood favorite. Chadwick’s has built its reputation on its dependably good steaks and chops. Crowd-pleasing side dishes include fried shoestring zucchini, whipped sweet potatoes, and crispy home fries. Feeling indecisive? You can’t go wrong with the classic T-Bone. Bonus: the restaurant offers stunning views of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.
Amber Steak House
(Greenpoint) Greenpoint’s first (and only) classic chop-
house, Amber Steak House serves gourmet cuts in elegantly old-fashioned surroundings. If your date doesn’t share your love of red meat, steer them towards the extensive seafood menu. The juicy 16 oz. New York Strip is broiled at 1,700 degrees and comes with a gorgeous heap of potatoes. Amber also has a great whisky menu.
Brooklyn Steak Co.
(Midwood) This kosher joint serves premium hand-cut steaks in a casual atmosphere. Located in the heart of Midwood, Brooklyn Steak Co. caters to a younger crowd. Popular dishes include the rib-eye, twice-cooked duck, popcorn chicken, and roasted carrot and arugula salad—all cooked to order by executive chef Eric Acklowitz. If you’re feeling adventurous, round out your meal with an order of fried pickles.
T. Fusion Steakhouse
(Marine Park) Opened in 2007, T. Fusion Steakhouse is a veteran of Brooklyn’s kosher restaurant industry. The elegant steak joint specializes in prime USDA hand-cut beef. The 22 oz., 21day aged prime rib is a must, as is the gargantuan 34 oz. bone-in ribeye. Finish the evening with a nightcap from their well-stocked bar.
