as its new President and CEO, I am saddened by the departure of an incredible boss, mentor and friend in Carlo Scissura. During the last four years, Carlo spearheaded a renaissance at the Chamber that resulted in a tremendous growth in membership, the creation of numerous innovative programs and services, and the success of countless businesses throughout Brooklyn. There is no question that Carlo’s are big shoes to fill, but I am buoyed by his and the Board’s confidence in me and grateful for all of the lessons he has taught me over the years. I wish Carlo the best of luck in his new endeavor and look forward to continuing to work with him to make Brooklyn a better place to live, work and own a business.” New York Building Congress President and CEO Carlo A. Scissura said, “It has been one of the greatest privileges of my life to serve as President and CEO of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. helping thousands of small businesses across Brooklyn and growing membership to record levels, to launching innovative programs like Chamber on the Go, Brooklyn-Made and Explore Brooklyn, creating new programming in Washington, D.C., and being one of the primary advocates for this incredible borough I call home. I will always look back fondly on the time I spent at the Chamber and treasure the memories and incredible relationships created here. Andrew Hoan is the perfect candidate to now lead the Chamber, and I look forward to working with him in my new role as President and CEO of the New York Building Congress. I have the utmost confidence that, through Andrew’s direction, the Chamber will continue to be one of the largest and most successful business organizations in the state. My deepest thanks to my dear friend, Board Chair Denise Arbesu, the entire Board of Directors and all the staff that has worked with me throughout my tenure.” Brooklyn Chamber Board Chair Denise Arbesu said, “Words cannot express the debt
of gratitude that the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce owes to Carlo Scissura. As President and CEO, he has surpassed any and all expectations, molding the organization into the largest and fastest-growing chamber of commerce in New York State. I will miss him deeply as a colleague, but as a friend, I am proud of him and wish him the best of luck in his new role. Succession Planning is part of our Strategic Plan, and as Carlo’s Chief of Staff and second in command, the Executive Committee and Board have the utmost confidence in Andrew Hoan taking the reins. Along with Carlo, Andrew has been a driving force behind the resurgence of the organization. I can think of no candidate with more experience or expertise, and the Executive Committee and our Board were absolutely confident that the ideal next President was already right here within our ranks. I have no doubt that his appointment will be equally well received by the countless Chamber members he has already done so much to help over the years.”

Brooklyn Chamber Announces 2016 Brooklyn-Made Award Winners O n January 5, 2017, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce announced the winners of the 2016 Brooklyn-Made Awards, honoring this year’s best certified Brooklyn-Made products. The awards recognize companies and entrepreneurs that manufacture their goods in the borough, growing the Brooklyn brand while promoting local economic development. The awards were divided into six categories: food, beverages, apparel, design, technology/ hardware and Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprises (MWBE). The winners of each category were Brooklyn Delhi, Café Grumpy, Scosha, Wax Rax, Zieba NY and Isabella’s Creations, respectively. “We were very proud to recognize and support these accomplished businesses and their high-quality, Brooklyn-Made products,” said Brooklyn Chamber President and CEO Andrew Hoan. “These industrious companies invest in Brooklyn — fostering local economic development, creating jobs for Brooklynites and manufacturing great products that expand our brand — and they deserve this honor.” “Brooklyn-Made is a wonderful recognition that rewards businesses for making substantive contributions to their local
economies and communities,” said Brooklyn Chamber Board Chair Denise Arbesu. “The winners of these awards have it all — product design, development and assembly all take place right here in our borough.” The Brooklyn Chamber introduced the
Brooklyn-Made certification in 2014. It is used to show consumers the extent to which various products are made in the borough. The system evaluates producers across a range of criteria, including the sourcing of materials, product assembly and the loca-
tion of employees. Applicants are awarded one of three certifications — gold, silver and bronze. Only legal businesses, headquartered in Brooklyn, that make one or more physical products are considered for Brooklyn-Made certification.

NYPD Commissioner James P. O’Neill Keynotes Brooklyn Newsmakers N YPD Commissioner James P. O’Neill was the keynote speaker at the December 2016 installment of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce’s Newsmakers series. Commissioner O’Neill touched on a range of topics in his address, including neighborhood policing, a recent spike in hate crime and the state of crime in Brooklyn and throughout the city. He also discussed his childhood roots in Flatbush and his 33-year career as a police officer, first as part of the Transit Police and later as part of the NYPD. “I appreciate the opportunity to be part of the Brooklyn Newsmakers series,” NYPD Commissioner James P. O’Neill said. “What a great opportunity to engage with those who live and work in Brooklyn, my hometown. This kind of dialogue is absolutely essential to fighting crime and keeping people safe. Cops can’t do it alone. Public safety is a shared responsibility, and neighborhood policing is the way forward.” “Brooklyn’s public safety and vibrant economy go hand-in-hand,” said Acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. “As Brooklyn’s chief law enforcement officer, I am committed to working with the NYPD to keep our borough’s business owners, employees and residents safe, which in turn helps our communities thrive.”

“Fair and effective policing is a vital component of the local atmosphere that helps Brooklyn businesses thrive and give back to their communities,” said Former Brooklyn Chamber President and CEO Carlo A. Scissura. “We’re very happy to have Commissioner O’Neill, a native Brooklynite, here to speak about many of the most pressing issues that affect our city. Many thanks to Investors Bank, NYU Tandon and the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership for making this possible.” “Commissioner O’Neill is a terrific addition to our growing list of prominent Newsmakers keynote speakers,” said Brooklyn Chamber Board Chair Denise Arbesu. “The NYPD’s essential role in keeping New Yorkers safe is highly relevant to the Brooklyn business community, and we are glad to be a part of that conversation.” Newsmakers is sponsored exclusively by Investors Bank, and is held in conjunction with the NYU Tandon School of Engineering and the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership. Investors Bank Chief Operating Officer Domenick Cama said, “We are grateful for the opportunity to sponsor the Brooklyn Newsmakers programs, and pleased that attendance has steadily increased since the series began. More importantly, the briefing sessions provide Chamber of Commerce members and their guests with up-close ac-
cess to the leaders who manage New York City.” “Tandon is committed to making the world and NYC safer through our research, among other areas, in cybersecurity and safer transmission of information across digital platforms. We are delighted to contribute to the well-being of the City and grateful to the NYPD for their diligent efforts in keeping us all safe. I am, thus, very pleased that the NYPD Commissioner O’Neill is addressing Brooklyn on our campus,” said NYU Tandon School of Engineering Dean Katepalli Sreenivasan. “We are delighted to welcome an important partner, Chief James O’Neill, to Downtown Brooklyn for what should be an enlightening conversation about his vision for the NYPD,” said Regina Myer, President of the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership. “Having grown up in Brooklyn, Chief O’Neill brings with him a deep understanding of our borough and we are excited to work with him to ensure Downtown Brooklyn remains one of the City’s safest neighborhoods.” Previous Newsmakers events have featured New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman, Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen, City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, and Public Advocate Letitia James, among others.

rooklyn’s premiere design event, BKLYN DESIGNS, is gearing up for another successful edition at the spacious and light-filled Brooklyn Expo Center in Greenpoint from May 5 to 7, 2017. Presented by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and co-produced with Novità Communications, the show will kick off the first weekend of NYCxDESIGN - New York City’s official citywide celebration of design - with a veritable pool of Brooklyn’s finest designers, architects and artists illustrating their work in myriad ways, from exhibitor booths to a curated marketplace to bespoke installations. The Chamber is calling for the first round of exhibitors producing a range of creative products and services in the borough and offering special pricing for multiple applicants from the same neighborhood. “We take pride in being the only show during NYCxDESIGN that is dedicated exclusively to Brooklyn talent. We were one of the first design fairs to showcase the local creative economy and continue to find new ways of supporting and highlighting our bustling design community,” said Andrew Hoan, President and CEO of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. BKLYN DESIGNS is currently accepting applications for exhibitor space and tables in the BKLYN BUYS marketplace from emerging designers and established brands across a range of categories including furniture, lighting, textiles, art, surfaces, accessories and design and architectural services. A jury of design industry experts will review the submissions on a rolling basis. In an effort to bring down the cost for participants, BKLYN DESIGNS will offer white gallery walls, at no additional charge, to accepted exhibitors to present their
work. The Chamber is also excited to announce a new neighborhood focus for this year’s show, highlighting the borough’s creative hubs and strong sense of community. Participants who apply in a neighborhood cluster, with four or more booths, will receive a 15% discount. About BKLYN DESIGNS: Founded in 2003 by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, BKLYN DESIGNS was one of the first design fairs to shine a spotlight on the creative economy in Brooklyn, and helped put many Brooklyn mak-

special, and we hope that it will remain that valuable for years to come.” The first day began with a lunch reception, which was keynoted by U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono of Hawaii. Senator Hirono spoke about her efforts to host a Hawaii-themed reception on Capitol Hill that emulated Brooklyn Night. She also praised the Chamber for bringing its views to lawmakers on the hill. “I think it is very important to touch base with the administration,” she said. The delegation went to the United States Capitol to meet with U.S. Senator Charles Schumer. He thanked the Chamber members for their service to their communities. Schumer is the Senate’s new minority leader and a native Brooklynite. “Brooklyn is in my bones,” he said. An afternoon of meetings with Brooklyn representatives in Congress followed; the delegation split into groups and met with U.S. Representatives Dan Donovan, Jerrold Nadler, Nydia Velazquez and Yvette Clarke, and the Office of U.S. Representative Carolyn Maloney. Then, the delegation went to the Kennedy Caucus Room to meet with U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand before Brooklyn Night began at 6 p.m. The senator toured the room, which was filled with Brooklyn-Made products the Chamber had transported to Washington. Brooklyn Night featured remarks from a variety of members of Congress; Senators Schumer, Gillibrand and Richard Blumenthal, and Representatives Clarke, Earl Blumenauer and Nita Lowey spoke throughout the night. The Legislative Trip’s second day began with a White House briefing, which was held in the Eisenhower Executive Office

They were given a brief overview of the state of the economy by Zaid Hassan, who is assistant director of the White House Business Council. Then, Deputy Director of Private Sector Engagement Justin Vail described the administration’s ongoing efforts on criminal justice reform. Bess Evans, who is senior associate director of public engagement and senior policy advisor to the Office of Public Engagement and the Domestic Policy Council, gave an overview of the administration’s work on health care. The last speaker was Rob Diamond, who is special assistant to the president for public engagement and director of private sector engagement. “Always an honor and a pleasure to welcome the Brooklyn
Chamber to the White House,” Diamond tweeted later. “They are the best in the biz!” A final luncheon back at the hotel was hosted by MSNBC commentator Chris Matthews. Matthews spoke extensively about his views on the election and the state of the electoral college. He also focused on the benefits of developing U.S. infrastructure, particularly railroads. “Forget red and blue; unite the country by rail,” he said. “The Washington, D.C. trip is a fantastic opportunity for businesses and nonprofits to interact with government at a substantive level,” said Brooklyn Chamber Board Chair Denise Arbesu. “From the halls of Congress to the White House, we’ve been able to help our members get their concerns across at top levels of government.” Brooklyn Progress • VISIT ibrooklyn.com 7

onify is a monthly monitoring service that monitors your current merchant service provider. Each month, Monify scans your statement, looking for hidden fees and deceptive billing practices. The company has a report card-style grading system that will grade your statement and give the score to you for free. After you receive the score, you can then choose whether you want to enroll in Monify’s services. If you accept credit cards from your clients, take two seconds to do this one trick – it can drastically reduce the fees you pay, all without having to change your current provider. Take a look at your merchant services statement. If you are missing any of these categories, there is a very good chance your provider is deceiving you with fees that you should not be paying. Interchange fees must be broken down into the following seven categories: 1) Description/card type breakdown 2) Sales total 3) Number of transactions 4) Rate 5) Cost per transaction 6) Sub total 7) Total Providers often leave out categories for a reason – to rob you of your hard-earned money. If your statement looks like the example, you are most likely in good hands with the right provider. If your statement doesn’t look like the example, you are most likely being deceived by the provider. A lack of regulation in merchant services and the broad definitions of the pricing models that exist allow 100 percent of the providers to charge as much as they can get away with. Most people don’t realize that while banks are heavily regulated, the merchant processing industry is not, and providers hide, make up and inflate fees and use deceptive billing practices to steal companies’ profits. Do not be fooled by a great rate. Merchants who think they have a great rate are most likely paying hidden fees. If you’d like to find out whether you’re paying unnecessary fees, Monify will test your statement for hidden fees and full transparency, and give you your score. The score is out of 100 and is free to anyone looking to keep their current credit card provider honest. A score of over 90 means you are in the right

hands, your provider is treating you well and no changes need to be made to your account. A score below 90 means changes need to be made to your account. A score below 70 means Monify will need to speak to your provider and make the necessary changes that will result in much lower fees. You can send your statements to Info@ getmonify.com or fax them to 212-634-4228. Joe Kraljev’s goal is to clean up the merchant services industry. He wants to make it illegal for providers to use deceptive billing practices to rob merchants of their hard-earned money. To accomplish that, he founded two companies that have one goal in common – to disrupt unethical profits in the merchant services industry. Members Only Processing, the second company, is changing the game in merchant services. It is the first provider of merchant services on the east coast to offer a membership type pricing model that breaks down interchange fees and is completely transparent with its clients. Its markup above volume is zero percent. It never charges a flat dollar amount to take over your processing, and that dollar amount never changes based on your monthly volume. This eliminates the dreaded rate review and caps its own profits in an industry that has no cap on profits. Visit www.membersonlyprocessing.com to see the three plans it offers.
Tickets Start at $15! Restrictions, exclusions and additional charges may apply. Subject to availability.

Exploring Brooklyn, One Business at a Time E
xplore Brooklyn is the Brooklyn Chamber’s tourism department, a brand and website that helps to promote the borough to the millions of people who visit each year. It is run by Mariela Estrella, who serves as director of Brooklyn tourism and business relationships, and supported by Walter Murillejo, who serves as project manager. “There’s no better borough than Brooklyn,” Estrella said. “My favorite part of my job is collaborating with businesses in the tourism and hospitality sector and generating awareness of their establishments.” Explore Brooklyn works to promote the borough through its website, explorebk.com. The site features Brooklyn dining options, events, shopping outlets and attractions. It also contains a business directory that includes Chamber members. It is consistently updated with new blog posts about upcoming events and programs throughout the borough. The department plans and executes initiatives that connect tourists in Brooklyn with local small businesses. It also promotes Brooklyn industries to draw more attention to them. Explore Brooklyn currently manages two major tourism partnerships; one with the Empire State Development Corporation, or ESD, and one with the home-sharing service Airbnb. The department partnered with ESD and Taste NY to launch Drink Local Week, a series of promotions at restaurants and bars throughout the borough. The week sought to promote the New York State craft beverage industry. Explore Brooklyn also organized and hosted two trips that connected Brooklyn businesses with vendors in the Little Finger Lakes region and Buffalo, N.Y. The trips provided opportunities for buyers to meet with makers, learn about products, and discuss distribution and market access issues. Another group went to the International Pow Wow (IPW) in New Orleans, La., the premier travel trade show in the United States. The department pre-scheduled 132 appointments with buyers from around the world to showcase Brooklyn products. Explore Brooklyn is currently partnering with Airbnb on AirbnBrooklyn, a neighborhood tourism project that connects tourists using Airbnb to small businesses operating near their hosts. It is the department’s second year of partnering with Airbnb. “I take pride in being able to support businesses in achieving their goals,” he said. “I like meeting local business owners who are making a difference and creating jobs in their communities.” Murillejo manages Explore Brooklyn’s website and communications, including email blasts and social media. Estrella also manages a borough-wide Tourism Council composed of non-profit promotional organizations, art entities, cultural attractions and destinations, tour operators and hotel operators. They work together to attract more tourists to the borough. “I have to say, my favorite part of the job is exploring Brooklyn,” Murillejo said. He manages and creates calendar event submissions, business directory listings, and neighborhood pages. Murillejo frequently connects with Brooklyn’s small businesses through social media and many of the visits the staff have made throughout the borough.

Eriksen Translations Inc. Celebrates 30th Anniversary with a Focus on the Future
T
his December, long-time Brooklyn resident Eriksen Translations Inc. celebrated its 30th anniversary. The company got its start in 1986 when, armed with a typewriter and a passion for language, Vigdis Eriksen launched a translation business. In the beginning, she worked out of an artist’s loft in Brooklyn with a handful of dedicated linguists. Eriksen Translations has since grown to become one of the top 40 language services providers in North America. Today, the company boasts an extensive network of translators and interpreters who work in more than 100 languages to offer a full range of language services across print, web, and multimedia to clients worldwide. Still a Brooklyn resident after 30 years, Eriksen is proud to use the borough’s language expertise to give back to the local community. The company works with agencies that support the education, health care, and social service needs of the borough’s multilingual residents, and provides translation and faceto-face interpreting services for hospitals, schools, and businesses throughout the New York metro area. To commemorate the company’s anniversary, Eriksen held a holiday bash at its office on Friday, December 9, 2016 and celebrated
the milestone with staff, linguists, clients, and friends. They were joined by Senior Advisor to the Brooklyn Borough President Ingrid Lewis-
Martin, who presented a proclamation honoring the company for 30 years in business. The recognition from the Borough Presi-
dent’s office coincides with another very meaningful award Eriksen received from the Business Owners Council, a regional membership organization for entrepreneurs. On November 21, 2016, the Council presented Vigdis Eriksen with its top award for company culture at the organization’s End of Year Bash and Member Awards Dinner. “Building a strong culture sometimes means doing things a little different,” said the Business Owners Council during the award presentation. “Eriksen Translations maintains an open, collaborative environment where there are ‘no doors,’ encouraging discussion and collaboration among team members. The team has a strong sense of shared purpose and values, working together not just to earn a profit but also to support the arts and build a more inclusive society through language.” “This award is especially meaningful as we celebrate our anniversary,” said Founder and CEO Vigdis Eriksen. “Developing a company culture that nurtures talent, promotes collaboration, and takes advantage of individual strengths has always been one of my top priorities. I am honored to have a dedicated, talented team, and we are excited to meet the future with expertise, creativity, and innovation.”

A walking tour of Bed-Stuy Historic District The Bedford-Stuyvesant Historic District is quite easily one of the most picturesque neighborhoods that Brooklyn has to offer. From its humble beginnings as a Dutch settlement in the 1800s, to a neighborhood that has been home to countless personages from legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson to hip-hop artist and mogul Jay-Z, the area is a diverse landscape that invigorates the senses no matter the season. A walk through the district is an ideal way to spend a day, appreciating all of the wonders of the Bed-Stuy Historic District. The starting point: Take the A or the C train to the Utica Avenue station. Exit and make your way into Fulton Park, a neat space where many come to get some fresh air and meet near the statue of Robert Fulton, the famous engineer and steamboat builder. Veer slightly east and walk north along Stuyvesant Avenue to begin your walk through the district, which was created and appointed to the National Register of Historic Places in the 1970s. Lovers of architecture will marvel at the varied styles of many of the neighborhood’s buildings, which include Utilitarian, Queen Anne and Beaux-Arts. Make a left onto MacDonough Street, and you’ll be greeted by Akwaaba Mansion, an 1860s estate that is now a popular bed and breakfast inn. Walk over to Marcy Avenue and make a quick left, crossing over Fulton Street, and you will find The Billie Holiday Theatre, the centerpiece of the venerated Restoration Plaza and home to an artistic organization dedicated to the community since 1972. Walk west on Fulton Street, and make the left onto Nostrand Avenue, and feast your eyes on the grandiose Alhambra Apartments, erected in 1889 and designed by architect Montrose Morris. If you’re inclined to partake in some shopping, the Bed-Stuy Historic District offers an eclectic array of boutiques and shops. Breukelen Cellars, a boutique at the corner of Nostrand and Halsey, is notable for a choice selection of wines and for hosting art exhibi-

“Part of making good decisions in business is recognizing the poor decisions you’ve made and why they were poor. I’ve made lots of mistakes. I’m going to make more. It’s the name of the game. You don’t want to expect perfection in yourself. You want to strive to do your best. It’s too demanding to expect perfection in yourself.”
“Being part of the Brooklyn Chamber has given us a tremendous opportunity to communicate our brand, network, and form business relationships, all of which is crucial for any business to succeed. By our attendance and participation in Brooklyn Chamber’s events, we have made a number of connections with businesses in need of our help and services.” -Debra Dixon, Light of Gold PR
