Chamber Rings in its 100th Year T
he Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce celebrated its Centennial Gala by throwing the biggest event in its history at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge. On Saturday, February 10, 1000 people packed into the Marriott’s Grand Ballroom to celebrate 100 years of business in Brooklyn. In a night of accolades given to the borough and past Brooklyn Chamber Chairs and Presidents, the Brooklyn Century Awards were presented to the people who have displayed tremendous leadership in the borough’s history and modern economy. The Chamber also recognized Centennial Chair Peter M. Meyer, who is the New York City Market Bank President at TD Bank, for his contributions to Brooklyn by dedicating the Peter M. Meyer Award in his honor. It
will be presented each year at the Chamber’s Annual Meeting and Trade Show. “Today’s Brooklyn Chamber is a vibrant organization, in line with current times and, as the largest Chamber in New York State, we provide services for businesses today and tomorrow,” Meyer said at the Gala. The Brooklyn Century Awards went to Pamela Harris, Bob Catell, Alan Fishman, Joseph M. Mattone, and Bruce Ratner. Harris is the former long-serving Chief Executive of Maimonides Medical Center. Catell and Fishman are former Chairs of the Brooklyn Chamber who have served in numerous other roles throughout the borough. Mattone and Ratner are real estate developers who have played integral roles in the borough’s development.
The night featured a keynote address by Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Andrew Hoan. “The support from our sponsors goes beyond putting on a party tonight,” he said. The speaking program also included remarks from Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce Board Chair Denise Arbesu, Meyer, Ana Oliveira of Investors Bank and Kenneth Daly of National Grid. The speakers were introduced by Amber Lasciak, the founder of REDU NYC. Lasciak received a loan from Brooklyn Alliance Capital, the Chamber’s Community Development Financial Institution, which provides loans for immigrant and minority-owned small businesses. The Start of a Centennial Year
LEADERSHIP CIRCLE CHAMPION
Well, March has certainly come in like a lion for the Brooklyn Chamber. Our roar actually began in February, as we pulled off the Party of the Century, our Centennial Gala, on February 10. Thank you to the 1000 people who attended and to those who supported us throughout the event, especially our Board Chair, Denise Arbesu and Centennial Chair Peter Meyer who leads TD Bank, our Brooklyn Bridge sponsor. TD has played a major part in our upcoming Centennial programming, including our exhibit ‘The Business of Brooklyn’ which opened on February 22 at the Brooklyn Historical Society. Aside from the many artifacts and nostalgia on display, what a treat to be able to engage in a historical conversation with our three living (two past and one present) borough presidents. They are truly insightful, innovative leaders who were instrumental in seeing Brooklyn’s potential as an economic driver for New York City and the rest of the world. As Brooklyn continues to boom with its population and development, we must not become complacent regarding its growth. That’s why the Brooklyn Chamber, along with a multitude of partners in government, business, education and advocacy, has released a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy to lead Brooklyn into the next 100 years. Our Centennial programming continues throughout 2018 with a series of Centennial Talks. The first talk, “Borough of Diversity,” recognized great New York City Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprises, in partnership with the 5 Chamber Alliance. It included a panel discussion that discussed diversity’s role in creating a thriving Brooklyn.

It was great to host Brooklyn Night, featuring Brooklyn-Made products from across the borough! On a personal note, I announced on March 2 that I will leave the Brooklyn Chamber in May for family reasons. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve this borough that I love. NYC Buildings Commissioner Rick Chandler Promotes Slew of Agency Initiatives for Brooklyn Business Community at Latest Newsmakers Event
R
ick D. Chandler, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Buildings, addressed the Brooklyn business community at the latest edition of the popular Brooklyn Newsmakers speaker series on January 10. The Commissioner touched on a variety of timely topics, including DOB NOW, which aims to move many DOB services online, as well as the NYC Construction Dashboard, a new aggregation of a wide variety of data collected by DOB. Chandler remarked that he had once worked mere blocks from the MakerSpace at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, where the event was held. Brooklyn Newsmakers is exclusively sponsored by Investors Bank, and is produced in partnership with NYU Tandon and the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership. “Brooklyn’s one of the most dynamic places on Earth and it’s a pleasure to talk to the borough’s business leaders about how we at DOB are supporting their work. Our agency is committed to delivering on our twin mandates of promoting construction safety and responsible development. What’s more, we’re modernizing DOB to ensure that New Yorkers can do 100% of their business with us online, know where their projects stand
without having to rely on intermediaries, and get consistent answers from us no matter who reviews their projects,” said Buildings Commissioner Rick D. Chandler, PE. “Well-kept and resilient commercial facilities are integral to a thriving business environment, and it was excellent for the Brooklyn business community to benefit from Commissioner Chandler’s expertise on the borough,” said Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Andrew Hoan. “Many thanks to Investors Bank, NYU Tandon and the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership for making his talk possible.” “We’re thrilled to host Commissioner Chan-
dler, who can speak confidently to a range of Building Code topics due to his long and thorough experience,” said Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce Board Chair Denise Arbesu. “The Commissioner’s specialized knowledge is very valuable to us and our membership as we continue to promote thriving economic development throughout Brooklyn.” Investors Bank Senior Vice President and New York Market Executive Ana Oliveira said, “We are honored to sponsor the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce’s Newsmaker Series in 2018, which brings together key business owners and executives. The program consistently features compelling pre-
sentations by exceptional leaders who serve Brooklyn, its businesses and communities. Our team looks forward to meeting new leaders and connecting with our clients and good friends at future Newsmakers events.” It is an honor to host Commissioner Rick D. Chandler of the NYC Department of Buildings here at NYU Tandon. As a licensed PE, he shares our dedication to making New York City a more livable, sustainable, and safer place, and he stands as a stellar example of how engineering know-how can be used for the benefit of society,” said Katepalli Sreenivasan, Dean of the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. “DOB Commissioner Rick Chandler’s strong leadership and vision has helped guide Downtown Brooklyn’s development. We’re proud to welcome him to the Brooklyn Newsmakers program and look forward to continuing to work with him to promote a sustainable, accessible, and resilient Brooklyn,” said Regina Myer, President of the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership. Past editions of Brooklyn Newsmakers have included five members of the Brooklyn Delegation to the House of Representatives, NYPD Commissioner James P. O’Neill and Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams, among others.

‘Realizing the American Dream’: TD Bank Awards Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce Grant to Provide Educational Seminars to Small Businesses Chamber to Partner with Citywide 5 Chamber Alliance, Nonprofits, TD to Assist Small Businesses and Home Owners
T
he Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce has been awarded a $750,000 grant from the TD Foundation to foster small business education and pathways to home ownership by partnering with nonprofits throughout the borough. The grant, which will be paid out over the course of three years, will allow the 5 Chamber Alliance to produce a bevy of small business education workshops, as well as seminars for potential home buyers, educating them on what mortgage lenders look for when they approve loans. “This grant follows a long history of helping businesses in Brooklyn, and beyond, including the expansion of the city-wide Neighborhood Entrepreneurship Project, which helped enumerable waterfront communities recover in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. We’re extremely grateful to be able to continue our productive partnership with TD Bank, which will create opportunities for small businesses and more educated home ownership in Brooklyn, and throughout the five boroughs. I look forward to continuing this relationship in the future,” said Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Andrew Hoan. The 5 Chamber Alliance last partnered, with TD Bank’s support, in 2012 in order to assist businesses that were affected by Superstorm Sandy. TD Bank Group and the TD Charitable Foundation provided a grant of $200,000, at the time, to create the Citywide Entrepreneurship Project. It provided direct commercial revitalization services to small businesses throughout the city, as a whole, with each borough program run out of the borough’s corresponding Chamber of Commerce. “We thank TD Bank for this incredible chance to, once again, make a difference by enriching the lives of our underserved communities, which the Brooklyn Chamber will host for the first time,” said Brooklyn Cham-
ber of Commerce Board Chair Denise Arbesu. “This partnership will further our commitment to small business education with an entire-city perspective, and let us share the work we’ve been doing in Brooklyn throughout New York.” “The potential to empower thousands of New York residents with financial education and stability is not only an honor for TD, it’s our obligation,” said Peter Meyer, Market President, TD Bank. “This partnership will provide economic growth to individuals interested in improving their financial status, as well as provide small business owners with the tools needed to create a sustainable, thriving business and we’re excited to be a part of this effort.” The program will include a variety of seminars to provide small business owners
with the tools they need to run successful operations. Another primary topic will be smart property ownership, with seminars on both commercial ownership and home ownership. The Brooklyn Chamber will provide a framework for running seminars, which will be offered through each borough Chamber of Commerce. Seminar types include: • Small Business Seminars • Home Buyer Seminars • Business Resource Discussions • M/WBE Certification • Brooklyn Chamber Centennial Education Seminar topics include, but are not limited to: • Realizing the American Dream • Creating a Strategic Plan
• Running a Profitable Company • Your Company’s Legal Structure The program will also include partnerships with community-based organizations and nonprofits throughout the city. “The Queens Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to be part of this effort,” said Thomas J. Grech, President and CEO of the Queens Chamber of Commerce. “We have advocated on the premise of all 5 Chambers working together with an overall mantra of a rising tide lifting all boats and this is a great result of this mindset.” Bronx Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Nunzio Del Greco said, “As President and CEO of the Bronx Chamber of Commerce, I am excited to work with the other members of the 5 Chamber Alliance in partnership with the TD Bank Charitable Foundation and Google.org, to coordinate enhanced services in support of businesses and individuals in low to moderate income and immigrant communities. This partnership ideally aligns with the Mission of the Bronx Chamber of Commerce.” “Education is key to making better and informed decisions. We thank TD Bank for the opportunity to provide this valuable service to new and existing businesses, and those wishing to embark on home ownership in all 5 boroughs. The Staten Island Chamber of Commerce is pleased to partner with our fellow borough Chambers and TD Bank to provide these resources in our community,” said Linda Baran, President and CEO of the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce. “We are excited to partner with the other borough-wide Chambers to deliver meaningful help to small businesses throughout the city,” said Jessica Walker, President and CEO of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce. “Thank you to TD Bank and Google for making this happen.”
‘Guiding The Future of Innovation’: Google Awards Brooklyn Chamber Grant to Give Businesses the Online Tools to Succeed Chamber to Partner with Citywide 5 Chamber Alliance to Expand Go Digital! Throughout New York City
G
oogle has awarded $125,000 to the non-profit arm of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, Brooklyn Alliance, to expand the group’s highly successful Go Digital! program throughout the five boroughs. The program provides free, on-site digital marketing assistance to mom and pop retail establishments in low-income neighborhoods focusing on immigrant-owned businesses, helping them set up online business profiles across various Internet and social media platforms. The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce has already served over 450 businesses with Go Digital! Now, the pro-
gram will expand throughout New York City thanks to a partnership with the 5 Chamber Alliance. In the first 30 days of Go Digital’s implementation in Brooklyn, participating businesses received nearly a million views online and 60 percent indicated they saw immediate increased revenue. The expansion of the Go Digital! initiative is a part of the Brooklyn Chamber’s Centennial Education Initiative. In addition to bringing the Go Digital program citywide, the Brooklyn Chamber will generate a train-the-trainer curriculum to teach students and others how to provide digital marketing tools to businesses.
It will also plan and execute a forum to guide the future of innovation in Brooklyn over the course of one year. “The Go Digital program empowers small businesses in high-need communities throughout Brooklyn to utilize their digital footprints, attract customers and increase revenue absolutely free of charge,” said Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Andrew Hoan. “Thanks to Google’s incredibly generous grant, we’re thrilled to be able to expand this program throughout the five boroughs, bringing smart, commonsense training to hundreds of businesses across New York City with
the 5 Chamber Alliance.” The Brooklyn Chamber has been helping businesses utilize digital marketing tools since 2014. A pilot of the program was funded by the New York City Economic Development Corporation in 2013. “Google is thrilled to stand alongside the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce to celebrate 100 years of service and commitment to this amazing community. Helping Employers Find the Best People Good Help: Supported by the Brooklyn Delegation to State Assembly and State Senate
A
thena Hernandez and Lara Pantin, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce’s Workforce Development team, help employers throughout the entire process of finding qualified candidates, from looking at resumes, to interviewing candidates, to recommending them to employers. They run Good Help Services, a program that the Center for an Urban Future recommends should be expanded to cover all five boroughs. “We become the recruitment arm for employers here in Brooklyn,” Hernandez said. The process starts when an employer reaches out to the Good Help team, asking with assistance in finding a new hire. The team assists the employer with creating a job description and posts it on the job boards of job sites, community-based organizations and colleges and universities. Then, they review the thousands of resumes that come in. “We’re the first line of defense,” Hernandez said. The team brings candidates into the Chamber’s offices for interviews, which are conducted personally by Hernandez and Pantin. They also sometimes
administer tests to candidates, screening their proficiency in Microsoft Office, for example. They send the resumes of candidates they like to the employer, who can then decide whether he or she wants to move forward. “It’s very rewarding to hear about the placements,” Pantin said. Good Help is integral to providing small business owners, who often do not have time to conduct exhaustive searches for candidates, with qualified employees. The team then assists the employer with scheduling. If the person is hired, Hernandez and Pantin follow up with the employers at the 30, 60, 90 and 180 day-mark. Hernandez said that her favorite part of the job is “when that employer calls me and says ‘This person is amazing.’” Good Help makes between 120 and 160 job placements per year, interviews 100 candidates per month, and reviews thousands of resumes every year. Good Help Services was created in 1995. “You’re helping people feed their families,” Hernandez said.

Board Member Spotlight
Brooklyn’s Newest City Council Members Justin Brannan Council Member Justin Brannan was born and raised in Brooklyn, the son of a record salesman and early childhood educator. After attending PS 185, McKinley JHS and Xaverian High School, Brannan studied journalism at Fordham, before embarking on a career as a professional musician. His bands released several albums and toured the world – traveling to over fifty countries across five continents. While working at a New York City radio station, Brannan got involved in union organizing and fought to recover unpaid wages for his co-workers. He then served as Chief of Staff to his predecessor Council Member Gentile and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs at the Department of Education where he helped oversee the expansion of Universal Pre-K. A longtime believer in the importance of making government work efficiently to create opportunities for working and middle class families, Brannan was elected in 2017 from a crowded field of ten candidates to represent southwest Brooklyn’s 43rd Council District. With too many people feeling that government only works for the wealthy and well-connected, Council Member Brannan has vowed to always fight for the “little guy.” The 43rd Council District might be far from the soaring skyscrapers and posh penthouses that many associate with New York City, but Brannan knows that his district is the backbone of the City and deserves the same respect, resources and results as everyone else. As Council Member, he’s made it his mission to make life just a little bit easier for everyone who
calls the 43rd District their home. Justin lives in Bay Ridge with his wife Leigh, an artist, educator, and small business owner.
Alicka Ampry-Samuel Alicka has always been a visionary and a dreamer. A fervent believer in the better angels of our nature, behind her signature glasses and smile rests true grit and empathy for her neighbors and community. This passion was forged from her upbringing in Brownsville, Brooklyn where she saw firsthand the struggles that many families faced to live day to day. Alicka carried this with her throughout her upbringing, educated in public schools. Her pursuit of furthering her education led her to North Carolina A&T State University, where she obtained a Psychology degree and subsequently, a Juris Doctor degree from CUNY School of Law. Her tenure attending these two universities made such an impression on her that she still sojourns to “the Greatest Homecoming on Earth” and has continued to model the CUNY school’s motto – “Law in the Service of Human Need.” Alicka has worked in various capacities with City and State legislators, where she spent years sharpening her servant leadership and perspective concerning marginalized individuals and their plights; locally and internationally. She worked as a community organizer in Brooklyn, as a Child Protective Specialist with the NYC Administration for Children Services, and prior to bringing her influences to Accra, Ghana where
she managed a Human Rights and Community Development portfolio under the auspices of US Embassy of Accra. Upon returning to the United States, she served as Chief of Staff to her State Assemblywoman Latrice M. Walker and later served as a Senior Advisor for the New York City Housing Authority in its Community Engagement & Partnerships Division. Despite her close and intimate understanding of the intersectionality of obstacles facing many, Alicka is among the few that remain actively hopeful and vocal about the much needed change that is imminent. Alicka is happily married to her college sweetheart, Kalongi, a United States Diplomat and the proud mother of a son, Kamau who shows promise as an aspiring artist. Giving City Students City Smarts
W
hen we founded City Smarts ten years ago, it was with a simple goal: to provide excellent one-onone tutoring. We worked with a handful of mostly Brooklyn-based families, providing their sons and daughters with academic support at each stage of their education. When 5th grade math got a little tough, we were there, and when the time came to apply to high school or college, we were there too. We eschewed claims of easier! better! faster! in favor of a decidedly old-school approach. And it worked. City Smarts kids were accepted to the city’s best public and private schools, and ultimately enrolled in the country’s best colleges, confident in their own abilities. Today, we work with hundreds of students across the New York City area, but we remain as committed as ever to providing holistic, highly individualized academic tutoring, test prep, and educational consulting tailored to the needs of our community. So how is City Smarts different? It all starts with our tutors. We recognize that while tests may be standardized, learning is not. And so we hire rockstar educators and brilliant test-takers, unabashed nerds who
just love to teach and proven specialists in higher learning. Each “tutor-pairing” is the result of a meticulous process. We take time to understand each student’s individual needs and pair them with the tutor who will be most effective. When questions arise–about learning obstacles, admissions processes, or upcoming tests–we provide careful guidance. And when City Smarts kids receive their report cards and diplomas, we’ve been known to swing by and celebrate. City Smarts doesn’t tout web-based, app-driven learning or trademarked methodologies, and we don’t offer shiny score-booster guarantees either. This is by design. We owe our decade in business to a relentless focus on that one simple goal– really excellent tutoring. We didn’t need a gimmick to go viral. To learn more about our offerings, including outstanding SHSAT, ISEE, ACT, and SAT tutoring, K-12 academic tutoring, and a college consulting program that has sent students to Harvard, Yale, and Columbia in the past year alone, visit citysmarts.net, or better yet, shoot us an email at info@citysmarts.net, or give us a call at 347-324-7443! A
s the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce celebrates its Centennial year, it is paying it forward with a special, perpetual award that will serve outstanding Brooklynites for years to come. The award was presented to Meyer by Brooklyn Chamber Board Chair Denise Arbesu and Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Andrew Hoan, at a Centennial preGala ceremony on Saturday, February 10 at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge. When asked for his reaction, Meyer said “Confucius once said ‘If you think in terms of a year, plant a seed; if in terms of ten years, plant trees; if in terms of 100 years, teach the people.’ It is always a pleasure to watch an idea take hold and bloom. I have been an active member of the Chamber for at least the past 25 years, and have watched the organization grow in strength and prominence, not only in Brooklyn but in New York and beyond. It is my distinct pleasure to have been selected to participate in the centennial celebration as gala chair, and honored that an award in my name will live on. Thank you to the staff of the Chamber, the Board and my TD Bank family for making this possible.” As President of the New York City Market for TD Bank, Meyer is the head of Commercial Banking, which includes Small Business, Business Banking, Middle Market Lending and NonProfit/Education/Government Banking. TD Bank currently has 142 locations in NYC. He currently serves as a trustee of St. Joseph College, and as a board member of The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy. Meyer previously served on the boards of Greater Jamaica Development Corp, American Cancer Society and the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership.

Dolce Brooklyn Receives $150,000 Loan from NYBDC for Expansion
olce Brooklyn, a gelato maker based in Red Hook, has received a $150,000 loan from the New York Business Development Corporation to be used for a wide variety of purposes for business expansion, including job creation. The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce supported the loan and will assist Dolce Brooklyn with hiring. “We need to grow up and develop the business,” said Pierre Alexandre, who runs the business with his wife Kristina. “We have a fantastic product, but we have a problem with exposure.” The Alexandres are originally from France. The money will help Dolce Brooklyn accomplish two objectives: physical improvements to its Red Hook store and the development of a new line of product. The Alexandres will improve their kitchen, increasing the production capacity and freezer capacity, and will install a new floor, with the goal of turning their shop into a more modern space. They will also seek to partner with a market or restaurant to create temporary, seasonal locations to sell their
products. The partnership will include two other points of sale. Dolce Brooklyn is continuing to partner with Formula E, an electric car company that hosted its inaugural New York City race in Red Hook last summer. At a Brooklyn Chamber event that welcomed Formula E to the business community at the Red Hook Winery, Dolce Brooklyn debuted a special gelato flavor in honor of the race. The partnership continues to this day. Dolce Brooklyn received the loan from The Brooklyn Fund, which is a partnership between the Brooklyn Chamber and NYBDC. The Brooklyn Chamber’s Business Solutions Center helped him with the loan application. “We will develop a new line of product to extend,” Alexandre said. Dolce Brooklyn’s gelato is frequently made using local ingredients, such as the ones found at Brooklyn Borough Hall’s farmer’s market. The shop once partnered with Van Brunt Stillhouse to release a flavor that incorporated the Stillhouse’s whiskey.

King’s Theatre Brooklyn 1027 Flatbush Avenue Upon its inception in 1929, the Loew’s Kings Theatre was one of the most exquisite theatres in the nation. This iconic theater soon became the epicenter of cinema and live performance in the thriving Brooklyn arts and shopping district along Flatbush Avenue. Beautiful Boxes of Bonbons Chocolates, truffles, heart-shaped candies, cards and more are signs of love across the world for special days, such as Valentine’s Day. With its sweet message and beautiful presentation, chocolates still make for a great gift! Some of the coolest gift box designs, cutest bonbons and personalized wraps and prints are to be found at Cacao Market, Tumbador Chocolates and Chocolate Works in Brooklyn!
Raw Deliciousness So-called raw chocolate is a minimally-processed cocoa bean turned into a delicious chocolate bar. Sometimes considered a “healthier option,” the our truth is that all chocolates are delicious, even if not created equal. The raw form of chocolate really brings out the variety of cocoa bean flavors, making it possible to taste the difference between beans from different parts of the globe. You can visit our friends at Raaka or Fine & Raw for tours of the “bean-tobar process” and enjoy the amazing chocolates they wrap in colorful, fun, creative and cute wrappers!
Candied Creations Skip the “standard” chocolate-covered strawberries and surprise your valentine with some more chocolate-covered creations this year. Take your tastebuds for an adventure with the wide variety of chocolate-covered pretzels, nuts, apples, kiwis, oranges, figs and more. If you want

6 Facts You Need to Know Before Switching Your Business to Solar Energy
Y
ou may like the idea of switching your business over to solar energy. Your company might even have a sustainability committee or executive devoted to exploring renewable energy. You have probably heard that solar will be great for your bottom line, not to mention the environment. But that could be where it all stops. Read on to get a stronger grip on what you should know before taking the plunge into solar energy. That way, you’ll be able to make a better educated decision on whether your business can actually benefit by making the transition to solar. The Solar Energies Industry Association (SEIA) reports that in the last decade, solar has experienced an average annual growth rate of 68 percent. Largely, this is due to the lowering cost of solar panels and installation, and the government’s passage of the Solar Investment Tax Credit. Residential and commercial solar installations are expected to double from 1 million in 2016 to 2 million in 2018. Non-residential solar installation is on the rise, with community solar taking a leading role. Fortune 500 companies, including Apple, Walmart and Amazon, have also been in the news for embracing clean technology for
their buildings. Here are six things it’s important to know before making that first call to a solar company: • There is no disruption to your business during or after the transition to renewable energy such as solar. You are connected to
factors. It’s best to get quotes from multiple vendors before moving forward • You don’t need to go out of pocket. Solar companies offer financing solutions – such as a lease - that allow your solar savings and incentives to fund the project. • Solar equipment comes with a 25-year warranty and maintenance contracts so that you never have to worry about a broken panel. • You are tapping into an unlimited, clean energy source, which is good for our planet and for future generations. With the right partner guiding you through what can be a complicated process, with multiple partners plying their services and wares, solar can be an incredibly lucrative option, not only for your business, but for our environment. When you’re ready to take the next step, call a broker like SolarKal, which can help guide you through the process and is agnostic when it comes to installation options and partners. SolarKal, a solar advisor, was recognized as one of the Top 100 Energy Startups. It was also announced as a winner in New York State’s 76 West Clean Energy Competition. SolarKal.com
the grid at all times. • Installing solar panels can increase the value of your business and/or building. • The price of a solar energy system can vary dramatically (a 100 percent difference) based on the area, the equipment used, the quality of the installation company and other

Learn How to Save the Brooklyn Way
M
ichael Schneider has been a publisher for more than 10 years and a serial entrepreneur since the ripe age of 13. Now 41, he lives in Greenpoint with his wife, two kids and a rescue dog. Michael was born and raised in Westchester County and lived in Manhattan before moving to Brooklyn. He instantly fell in love with the suburban urban community vibe of North Brooklyn. Michael’s foray into discounts and offers began with a popular discount card he created while attending the University of Delaware. His most successful venture is a hospitality interior design magazine, Boutique Design, which hosts the highest-regarded hospitality interior design event in the United States, called BDNY. Michael is also the founder of Pilots to the Rescue, a 501c3 nonprofit that saves animals from being euthanized by transporting from kill shelters to no-kill shelters. Upon moving to Greenpoint, Michael noticed that the local, independent merchants faced several difficulties. With increasing online sales and rising rents, the local “mom-and-pop” needed all the help it can get. To make matters more difficult, these merchants have little budget left over for marketing. Michael also real-
ized that consumers don’t want to pay for discounts and want an offer to try something new. Thus, the idea of The Brooklyn Saver, a free local discount guide, was born. The Brooklyn Saver is a community-driven discount guide that connects Brooklynites
and visitors to local independent merchants through the intersection of storytelling and discounting. It is a trusted, authentic editorial voice that builds support of the local community. Launching this spring, The Brooklyn Saver is a free printed guide that will feature curat-
ed merchants with exclusive offers and coupons. Unlike other publications, it is action-oriented, featuring attractive offers for all merchants and advertisers, engaging users to interact with the guide on a consistent basis. The guide is bi-annual with a distribution of 25,000. The first issue will feature North Brooklyn (Williamsburg, Bushwick, Greenpoint) and merchants in the following categories: Food & Drink, Shopping, Health & Beauty, and Culture & Entertainment. Local consumers or visitors will pick up The Brooklyn Saver at any of over 100 participating merchant locations. Grassroots marketing throughout the neighborhood as well as distribution by local hotels, tour operators, and other venues will be used to circulate the guide throughout the neighborhoods. If you are a merchant interested in joining their program, please go to: www.BrooklynSaver.com and apply for free. If you are an advertiser that wishes to inquire about the opportunity to promote your business, you can download The Brooklyn Saver media kit on their website. Realty Collective hosts “Buying into Brooklyn” Crash Course
A
collection of agents with a passion and love of Brooklyn’s history and everevolving energy, Realty Collective was co-founded in 2005 by Victoria Hagman. Victoria has not only earned a reputation as a trusted and admired agent in Brooklyn’s real estate market but also as a committed community leader and historic preservationist. Not happy with the stereotypically shady practices of other agents and agencies, Victoria prefers to hire creative types. Realty Collective’s network of agents includes designers, artists, dancers, producers, photographers, musicians, filmmakers, and writers. These are people who understand that a home is more than just square footage – it is a place to create the environment that reflects and supports who you are. The Realty Collective team lives and works in Brooklyn, often sponsoring, hosting or participating in community events. From setting up a table at a neighborhood street festival to fundraising for local non-profit organizations, contributing to and being active members of our community is extremely important to us. An event that we co-hosted last fall, Buying Into Brooklyn, was a crash course for firsttime home buyers navigating the often stressful process of purchasing their first homes. We 16 Brooklyn Progress • March/April 2018
had a great turnout in a packed room at The Brooklyn Brewery! Victoria and RC agents, Tina Fallon and Jane Herro, were there to give tips and answer questions alongside mortgage professionals, a real estate attorney and renovation experts. We explained what it takes to find the right home, make the right offer, get into contract, secure the right financing, and close, all without having a nervous breakdown. Some of the questions asked were “Is their any upside
to using ones own bank to acquire a loan?” and “What is the difference between a co-op and a condo and how does that effect closing costs?”. Acquiring a foundation of knowledge about the real estate market in the area before beginning your journey is crucial and those who came out on October 10th now have the tools to begin their home search. “It was great to see first time home buyers of all different levels at the event. Some who have been going to open
houses, those who have gotten pre-approved already and many who just have a goal of buying in the next few years but didn’t know where to begin. It’s never too early to start preparing to buy!” says RC’s Jane Herro. Realty Collective has offices in four locations, Red Hook, Carroll Gardens, Columbia Waterfront District and Clinton Hill. Look out for more of our events, which we post regularly on our blog at realtycollective.com.

Ideal Properties Group’s Journey as the Brooklyn Born and Bred Firm
I
deal Properties Group is one of the largest privately owned, independent real estate firms in Brooklyn today. Its journey as the “Brooklyn Born & Bred” firm began over 10 years ago in April 2007, when Aleksandra Scepanovic and Erik Serras realized the need for a technologically innovative real estate company in their beloved borough. Scepanovic previously worked as a wartime journalist and editor in her home country of Serbia. After the Balkan Wars, she moved to New York City, where she pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology. Her interest in interior design was sparked from a post-war mindset, and it led her to a job at the small brokerage firm in Manhattan where she met Serras. Serras has been in the real estate world since 2000. Prior to that, he was a financial and REIT specialist on Wall Street. The duo soon realized Brooklyn’s real estate potential. The borough was not yet seen as a competitor to Manhattan, but as a secondary destination where people lived only if they wanted more affordable housing. With their keen knowledge of both the econo-
my and real estate, Scepanovic and Serras knew that this would soon change, and they launched the firm from the spare bedroom of their Brooklyn home. Mapping out rental properties on a bulletin board, they began to enter the market and develop deep expertise in the borough.
Through their dedication, they opened their first office in Gowanus. Soon, they established the brand. With continued perseverance, business flourished and over the course of 10 years, Ideal expanded to four offices in Brooklyn: Gowanus, Park Slope, Cobble Hill and Williamsburg. The firm grew
to a staff of over 200 highly trained experts, from real estate brokers and salespeople, to marketing and social media gurus. Ideal expanded from primarily rentals to mostly sales and expanded in the commercial market as well. On the company’s 10-year anniversary, Scepanovic and Serras launched the company’s newly redesigned website, driven by the firm’s desire to make reliable real estate and neighborhood data more accessible to its clients, customers, new development, sales and rental teams, colleagues, friends, and the media. In addition to traditional real estate services, Ideal maintains internal market research, architecture, interior design, and programming teams offering a full range of design, staging, marketing, new media and web services. The firm possesses extremely accurate and relevant data on sales and distributes a focused quarterly market report. Because of a steadfast commitment to its team members and customers, Ideal continues its rapid growth, and looks forward to its continued expansion across the New York City real estate market.
Kamin Brooklyn Puts a New Stamp on Urgent Care
U
rgent care centers are popping up all over the place, including here in Brooklyn. If you look around, you may notice them on your way home from work or while taking a leisurely stroll. Many urgent care centers are part of large chains, while others can be operated by a single doctor who simply puts up a sign announcing urgent care hours. At Kamin Health, we take a different path. As a patient, you will get all the speed and efficiency that you expect from an urgent care facility, while resting assured that you are receiving quality medical care. At Kamin Health, we are respectful to the neighborhoods in which we open our centers, and work hard to be a helpful community resource for everyone’s urgent and routine medical needs. Each and every manager is a local resident and has a grip on the community’s needs. This allows us to give back to the community, whether it is by sponsoring events at local schools, educating community members on their ability to obtain medical insurance or supporting local small businesses by hosting raffles and contests. From the second a patient walks through our doors, we take pride in the service we provide them, whether it’s the complimentary beverage station, charging stations, free Wi-Fi or the children’s play area. Our short registration form makes the registration process super quick, and allows us to see our patients promptly. Once the registration process
is finished, patients are escorted to one of our state-of-the-art exam rooms, where they are examined by our highly experienced providers. Every Kamin Health provider is encouraged to not only provide quality medical care, but to provide compassionate care and allow patients to ask any relevant questions or concerns without feeling rushed. Every patient gets a follow-up call the day after visiting. If a patient is advised to follow up with a primary care physician, requires a specialist but doesn’t have a PCP, or does
not know a specialist, Kamin Health’s patient relations team will use its wide network of contacts to find the patient the appropriate doctors. Part of working with the community is building and maintaining a good rapport with medical providers in the neighborhoods where Kamin Health operates, and it is proud of its collaborative relationships. Kamin Health is especially proud of its flagship Brooklyn location. Located in the center of Crown Heights within walking distance of Prospect Lefferts Gardens, our amazing team
is led by lifelong neighborhood resident Yosef Hershkop - Manager CHUC, with hard work and a commitment to both our patients and the community at large. Crown Heights Urgent Care is now a valued and respected center of healthcare in the community. All of Kamin Health’s patients know how accessible it is, and it is happy to expand that exceptional personal service to all Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce members, so don’t be shy and reach out. Yosef can be reached via email: yosef@ kaminhealth.com.
