BROOKLYN EATS Female Makers Make Their Mark at BROOKLYN EATS
A
nita makes yogurt. Chitra makes an Indian relish called Achaar. Pooja makes ice cream with native spices from India. And, Marisa makes salt water taffy. This year’s BROOKLYN EATS food and beverage showcase brought a variety of flavors and differing elements, but it also brought a unifying theme -- female makers are making their mark on the food manufacturing industry. Sixty-one exhibitors showcased at the event held on Thursday, June 28 at BKLYN STUDIOS at City Point, and 21 of them were women-owned businesses. In Brooklyn, food and beverage manufacturing has grown by 31 percent since 2009 to 7,300 jobs, according to a new economic report from NY State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli. And, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2017, women made up almost 42% of the food manufacturing industry nationwide. The event’s popularity showcases the broader success of Brooklyn’s food and beverage manufacturing scene, an economic force that accounts for the greatest portion of manufacturing jobs in the borough. Brooklyn food manufacturing created over 6,000 jobs during the first half of 2015, and 35 percent of New York City’s food manufacturing jobs are located in the borough. “Brooklyn’s food and beverage manufacturers are an industrious and spirited bunch of people who are really making an impression on the culinary sector throughout Brooklyn and beyond. Plus, they are environmentally conscious and making use of the borough’s many natural resources to sustain and grow their businesses. We appreciate their participation and thank our sponsors and the city and state legislatures for their essential support,” said Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce Acting President Rick Russo. “BROOKLYN EATS is always a huge success, but this year was especially successful due to the strength of women entrepreneurs who are manufacturing high-quality, artisanal products right here in Brooklyn,” said Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce Board Chair Denise Arbesu. “It’s great to sample and purchase

the results of their hard work, and passion, and to know their production has led to job creation and economic development in the borough.” “Being in business in Brooklyn is extraordinary from the rest of the world because of the invaluable knowledge and collaborative spirit you can only get from others running businesses here. And, working side by side with fellow women entrepreneurs who started in their own kitchens and at pop-up markets and now have thriving, successful businesses – is so
exciting to see. I’m fortunate to be surrounded by these tough, smart and resourceful women,” said Anita’s Yogurt Founder Anita Shepherd. “It’s exciting to be a new business in Brooklyn. Not only is there support from the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, but people are hungry for Brooklyn-Made new, healthy, and organic foods. At Norwegian Baked we are bringing our tradition of Norwegian nutrientrich crispbread to modern-day Brooklyn with health-conscious quality food that tastes good.

It’s even more meaningful to be able to be amongst like-minded women in this business who understand the challenges and are passionate about their successes,” said Norwegian Baked’s Founder and Baker Hedvig Bourbon. “We have had great success with BROOKLYN EATS and this was our third time exhibiting. It has become a must-visit for everyone in town for the food shows that week, and there are an increasing number of buyers and media every year who focus on the Brooklyn brands

and make a point to visit. In fact, we made the connection with our largest customer, who is a national retailer, at BROOKLYN EATS last year,” said Legally Addictive Foods Founder Laura Shafferman. She added, “being a female founder has been nothing but an advantage in this community and I’ve made so many friends with other incredible women food entrepreneurs since we opened four years ago. New York City is definitely the absolute best place in the country to be a female founder.” Shafferman was recently part of a panel discussion on women in manufacturing that took place on June 6 at The Noble Experiment as part of the Brooklyn Chamber’s Meet the Makers series. The well-attended event covered topics such as the challenges women face in the manufacturing world, why they located their business in Brooklyn and any advice they would give to fellow entrepreneurs looking to start their own businesses. Other panelists included Kimmee Hoffman, co-owner of Greenpoint Trading Co. and Nina Nathel, Operations Manager at Nobletree Coffee. Both companies will exhibit at BROOKLYN EATS. The Brooklyn Chamber has produced BROOKLYN EATS in some fashion since 1997, when it began as a trade show for Brooklyn restaurants. The aim was to encourage attendees to gain business to the restaurants after the show. Today, BROOKLYN EATS is aimed at local and regional buyers/distributors, restaurateurs and consumers with the aim of increasing visibility

Meet the team
Communications covers a lot of ground at the Chamber
T
he Brooklyn Chamber’s Communications team is a two-person operation covering promotions, media relations, digital and social media, speechwriting, copy editing, and original content for publications such as the Progress. Meredith Daniels, whose past experience has been as a multimedia journalist and press liaison for the MTA, leads the team. Chloe Silversmith, who joined the Chamber in May after working at BAM and NYCEDC, brings her marketing knowledge and cultural institution experience to the job. Together, the team puts out six issues of the Progress per year, a twice-weekly e-newsletter, called the Buzz, runs the Chamber social media sites, as well as event-specific social media sites, and provides updates to the Chamber’s website, ibrooklyn.com. And, as you read in the last issue of the Progress Meet the Team story, the Chamber puts on many events which involve many components. So, all materials associated with events, such as journals, signage, flyers and other collateral cannot go out until it is carefully copyedited and approved by the Communications team. “We literally make sure the “t’s” are crossed and the “i’s” are dotted. I enjoy writing and copyediting, and George works so hard on the design, it would be a shame to have any
mistakes in the copy,” said Vice President of Communications Meredith Daniels. Branding and voice are also a big part of communicating what the Brooklyn Chamber is, and what it does. As a member-driven
organization, as a support system for individuals looking for healthcare assistance, job seeking advice or networking opportunities, the Chamber portrays itself as a friendly, approachable, informative and understanding
organization. We are a staff of diverse individuals, corresponding with a community of diverse individuals, and the Communications team strives to provide familiarity and shared interests when communicating to our audience. In the world of digital distribution and immediate news, social media is very important as a means of sharing information with the membership and beyond. “Working on social media entails a variety of tasks; from figuring out what type of copy, images, and social media channel will most effectively reach and engage the audience, to selecting and guiding businesses for Instagram takeovers for event promotion,” said Communications Associate Chloe Silversmith. Essentially, the Communications team works with every department at the Brooklyn Chamber, in order to promote and disseminate information about all the great work the Chamber does. “We have so much going on at any given time that we don’t have a problem running out of our own news to share, but the best part of the job is actually helping members share their stories. Many small businesses don’t have time to concentrate on marketing. So, if we can help promote them in some small way then we become better and more effective communicators,” said Daniels.

IN MEMORIAM
Board Member Spotlight on Phil Stenger
P
hilip F. Stenger served a two-year term as Chairman of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and the Brooklyn Alliance and continued to serve on the board of directors in an emeritus capacity until his passing last month. He served on the Chamber’s Centennial Committee, contributing to a celebration that began this February. Stenger also served as the President of the Municipal Club of Brooklyn and wass the former Chairman of the Council of Regents of St. Francis College. He served on many boards and contributed to many organizations during his 60-year career in banking which began at Bankers Trust Company in 1953, where he rose through the ranks to Assistant Treasurer in 1965, Assistant Vice President in 1969 and Vice President in 1971. In 1984, Phil joined National Westminster Bank until his retirement in 1993. He was employed as a consultant for TD Bank in the Brooklyn region where he was given the opportunity to develop new business and make introductions to potential
TM
customers to his colleagues. “Phil Stenger was a leader amongst men. Phil was someone who was always there,
someone you could always count on for help and support. Phil was the “Dean of Bankers.” Above all, Phil treasured his family. I am proud to have called Phil a friend. Phil enriched all who knew him – Phil Stenger will be greatly missed,” said Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce Board Chair Denise Arbesu. “Phil Stenger was, in every sense, a true gentleman. A giant of the banking world, Phil’s leadership with legions of organizations over the decades places him central to the Brooklyn renaissance. Always impeccably attired, Phil remained vital in recent months, contributing his prowess to planning the Brooklyn Chamber’s Centennial Gala, an event with which he was devoted. So many have been the beneficiary of Phil’s expertise and friendship, and I am honored to count myself among them. I vividly recall a breakfast he asked I have with him in 2003 in Albany -- just us -- as he took a keen interest in the work I was taking on, having just joined the Chamber staff after serving as fel-
low Board members for five years previously -- now and again, I reminded him about what our talk meant to me. He was a constant in my work over the years, and I already miss him,” said Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce Acting President Rick Russo. “Phil always showed great dedication and commitment to the many causes and organizations he was part of. For so many of us in banking he served as a role model and mentor and we will all miss him. He was always a man of service to his community, to Brooklyn, and his country (having served in the army during the Korean War) and our fond memories of him will live on forever. We wish his family peace and comfort during this time,” said Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce Centennial Chair and Chair Emeritis Peter Meyer. Philip is survived by his wife Evelyn to whom he was married for over 60 years. Together they had three children and six grandchildren.

A Wide Range of Programming at the Brooklyn Historical Society This Summer
H
oused in an 1881 landmark building in Brooklyn Heights, the Brooklyn Historical Society (BHS) is a venue worth noting on the outside as well as the inside. It is a nationally recognized urban history center dedicated to preserving and encouraging the study of Brooklyn’s extraordinary 400year history. As mentioned in the Centennial edition of the Progress, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce is proud to celebrate a quarter of this rich history with its current exhibit at BHS — The Business of Brooklyn: An Exhibition on the Occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, which explores the past 100 years of business in the borough. The exhibition showcases images and objects from companies large and small that thrived in Brooklyn, including Domino Sugar, Squibb Pharmaceuticals, Schaefer Beer, Drake Bakeries, Abraham & Straus, Gage & Tollner, and many others. For those interested in digging into the history of business in Brooklyn from a different angle, Brooklyn Historical Society’s second location in DUMBO’s Brooklyn Bridge Park is host to a major exhibition and multimedia experience titled “Waterfront.”
“Waterfront” brings to life the vibrant history of Brooklyn’s coastline through stories of workers, artists, industries, activists, fami-
lies, neighborhoods, and ecosystems. Brooklyn Historical Society’s evening public programming provides a wide range of
panels and lectures throughout the summer. On July 31, in connection with ‘The Business of Brooklyn” exhibition, historian Joshua B. Freeman will discuss his recent book, “Behemoth: A History of the Factory and the Making of the Modern World.” Freeman, who is Distinguished Professor of History at Queens College, looks at how the factory has come to define the modern world, transforming the human condition and the environment. On July 19, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Gilbert King presents his latest book, “Beneath a Ruthless Sun: A True Story of Violence, Race, and Justice Lost and Found.” King tells the true, gripping story of false accusations against an African-American man in the late 1950s, and the reporter who doggedly pursues the truth. Finally, on August 23, Brooklyn Historical Society turns its attention to the buzz around bees. In the program “Urban Bees: Mead, Rooftop Farms, and an Environmental Crucible” experts discuss the proliferation of urban apiaries, honey’s ascent on bar and restaurant menus, and more. Programs at Brooklyn Historical Society start at 6:30 pm. For more information, to register for programs, and to see open hours, visit www.brooklynhistory.org.

BBT Brightens Brooklyn’s Southern Shore with Arts and Culture for All T ucked away on the campus of Kingsborough Community College is one of Brooklyn’s finest artistic gems: Brighton Ballet Theater (BBT). Since its founding 31 years ago, BBT has served as a cultural oasis for the many diverse immigrant, ethnic, religious and socio-economic groups that call Brooklyn home. It’s no wonder that the website hometogo.com, in a feature about NYC attractions, said that BBT “conveys the strength and dynamism of the local community.” Today this award-winning non-profit organization teaches over 300 children ages 2-18 classical ballet and several other dance genres, offers many different full-scale productions and a World of Dance Festival at affordable prices for local families, performs in many community festivals, provides arts enrichment at six public schools, and brings dance and fitness workshops to five senior centers annually. BBT is distinct from many other local dance programs in part because its instructors are all accomplished soloists from renowned touring companies and ballet academies in the former Soviet Union and/or graduates of university dance programs in the US. As the BBC noted in a story about Brighton Ballet Theater, it is now “one of the largest schools of classical Russian ballet in the country.” Another rarity: All BBT classes are taught to live musical accompaniment. One of BBT’s most distinctive features, however, is its Founder and Executive Director Irina Roizin’s belief that all children deserve an opportunity to dance, regardless of background, ability or fi-
nancial means. To this end, the organization offers more than $60,000 in need- and meritbased scholarships every year. This spring BBT’s Artistic Director and Principal Choreographer Edouard Kouchnarev premiered a new version of “Cinderella,” set to the music of Verdi and focused on the the theme of forgiveness. “I always wanted to bring to life this classic story by Charles Perrault because it is, perhaps, the central fairytale of all times and peoples and, because it has seen thousands of variations...I wanted to add my own,” said Kouchnarev.
“Cinderella” is the latest production of BBT’s “Theater for Young Audiences,” which garnered a Neighborhood Achievement Award from Mayor Bloomberg in 2006. In an unusual twist, the current production stars Sasha, an 11-year-old native of Peru, as Cinderella and Logan, a 12-year-old whose parents hail from Spain and China, as the Prince. More experienced students, instructors and guest artists dance supporting roles. BBT is seeking support for more performances in community venues over the coming year. There are many different ways to support
this wonderful organization and expand its reach within the community. Individuals can enroll their children in BBT’s Summer Intensive (August 13-26) or academic year classes (starting in September), make a charitable contribution, or attend one of BBT’s productions. Corporations, foundations and other organizations can sponsor a performance, underwrite BBT scholarships, or partner with BBT in other ways, such as providing volunteers, space or services for a BBT event. Check out the website at www.bbtballet.org or call 718.769.9161 for more details.
4 Tools to Solving the Crisis in the Workforce
D
isengagement has become a crisis in the American workforce—from top managers to hourly employees. Its impact is felt from personal to global levels. Bova Enterprises offers a proven GPS guidance system that can change the course of this crisis and completely eradicate it. This system consists of 4 tools that will vastly improve personal and professional experiences and job effectiveness. Similarly, when those in managerial positions implement just some of these elements, not only will managers themselves benefit, but the entire institution and its bottom line will as well.
Distinguishing Management, Leadership and Supervision Accountable managerial leadership is critical to employee and business success. Management’s role is to ensure the organization’s work gets done in the best way possible. Differentiating between management and leadership is important. A strong leader seeks to understand his/her staff’s behaviors and personalities in order to attain success. Supervision is also important, but it does not carry the weight or authority of a managerial role. 18 Brooklyn Progress • July/August 2018
Such semantics and distinctions are important.
Effective Task Assigning equals Quality, Quantity, within Time and Resource Allocations (ETA=QQT/R) Strong managers must assign tasks effectively and cleverly. Quality, quantity, completion time and necessary resources are all important for effective employee task assignment. This involves open communication between manager and employee. When understood by both managers and workers, this formula eliminates confusion and misunderstanding of the tasks to be completed.
Self-Awareness In order to live a fulfilling life, individuals must understand their own capability and recognize desires and needs. It is equally important that we understand how our actions and behaviors impact others. Self-knowledge is a powerful tool and a critical component of a successful employee, if this employee is to help a business also achieve success.
Self Care Our world can feel overwhelming and ex-
hausting. Add work into the fold, and along comes a host of other issues to confront daily. Self-care—exercise, deliberate breathing techniques, mindfulness, self-honesty and nurturing—is critical to our overall well-being. This includes our daily work and how we handle complex social and professional situations. If employees keep positive, so too does a business thrive. Each of the 4 tools can stand alone, but utilized together they form a well-oiled system that can and will eliminate employee disengagement once and for all. Consider the tools as building blocks of an empowered, innovative and creative workforce AND foundational pillars for profitable, successful and socially conscious businesses. Further reflection and internalizing of the details of these tools will truly help employees and business leaders reinvigorate themselves, their businesses and the American workforce. Take personal action. Recognize there is a better way to build work systems. Basic knowledge and tools, self-reflection, self-assessment and courage are required of workers at all levels, in all industries and businesses of all sizes.
Bova Enterprises, led by Rosemary Bova, is passionate about innovating new pathways for businesses, delivering savings to clients and developing women in our workforce. Utilizing a science-based approach to organizational development, Bova Enterprises has been providing management, business and executive coaching services for more than 28 years. For more information about the 4 Tools to Solving the Crisis in the Workforce and Bova Enterprises, visit www.bovaenterprises.com.
