New President and CEO Takes the Helm at Brooklyn Chamber T
he Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce has a new thought leader sitting in the corner office and it’s a name that is familiar with the renaissance of Brooklyn. Hector Batista began his career in Borough Hall, where he served as Director of Real Estate for the Brooklyn Economic Development Corporation, Director of Economic Development and Director of Development and Finance, over the course of nine years, for former Brooklyn Borough President Howard Golden. Batista is the first Hispanic President to serve in the Chamber’s 100-year history and was recently honored at City Hall by the Black, Latino & Asian Caucus (BLAC) as they celebrated the Hispanic roots and contributions by community leaders. He gave his first official address, as the Brooklyn Chamber President and CEO, during the Annual Meeting and Trade Show held on October 24 at Gargiulo’s Restaurant in Coney Island. As the son of a man who owned a small business, Batista has an appreciation for the challenges the business community faces every day and wants to make sure the membership knows the Chamber is there for them to help with those challenges. He wants the organization to focus on serving members – the small, medium and large companies – by proactively growing and supporting them through programs, service and advocacy. He plans to strengthen many of the established programs such as workforce development, neighborhood entrepreneurship and Brooklyn-made certifications, but he will also be setting other goals and implementing more strategies during his first 100 days at 335 Adams Street. He will soon experience the Brooklyn Chamber’s advocacy efforts on a federal level as he leads a delegation on a two-day legislative trip to Washington, D.C. where members will meet with elected officials and heads of agencies to discuss federal legislative issues that could affect their businesses. The Federal Legislative Agenda will be available on ibrooklyn. com as will the State Legislative Agenda following the Chamber’s trip to Albany in March. Batista leads all three arms of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, including its 501c (3) corporation, the Brooklyn Alliance, and its Community Development Financial Institution, Brooklyn Alliance Capital Inc. He will continue to work closely with the Board of Directors of all three organizations, with Brooklyn’s small businesses, elected officials and other Continued on Page 5

CHAIR’S CIRCLE Message From The President
Hector Batista
A New Beginning for the Brooklyn Chamber
LEADERSHIP CIRCLE
I wanted to take this opportunity to re-introduce myself as the new President and CEO of the Brooklyn Chamber. I am a Brooklyn boy at heart, having grown up here, attended high school here, my children having attended school here, and now my return to Brooklyn. I am looking forward to meeting all our local businesses that comprise this great borough that I truly believe is like nowhere else in the world.
CHAMPION
Many of you may know that I was lucky enough to work with former Brooklyn Borough President Howard Golden, when I led his economic development team. It was truly a great time for industrial growth downtown, and for other parts of the borough. MetroTech drove big companies and jobs here and I watched our first hotel in Brooklyn (the Marriott) get built. This momentum continues today with our technology, manufacturing, and innovation industries where we are seeing places like the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Brooklyn Army Terminal and Industry City really drive economic development. Our healthcare sector employs more people in Brooklyn than any other job sector with the retail industry as the borough’s second biggest employer. Hospitality and tourism is booming with over 50 hotels in Brooklyn and about 20 more in the pipeline. Plus, Brooklyn is home to 20 higher educational institutions that enroll more than 120,000 students.

Brooklyn Chamber Furthers Health and Wellness in the Workplace with Inaugural 5K Corporate Challeng e
Just Energy BROOKLYN RUNS Took Place October 11, 2018 in Prospect Park
S
ome rain in Prospect Park didn’t dampen the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce’s inaugural corporate run. The Just Energy BROOKLYN RUNS 5K took place on Thursday, October 11, 2018 with 143 runners participating. The fun, teambuilding event was organized to strengthen community in Brooklyn and promote health in the workplace. Proceeds from the run supported the mission of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce to promote a healthy and robust business environment throughout Brooklyn. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Prospect Park Alliance, the nonprofit organization that cares for the park. The race was followed by an awards ceremony and reception in the LeFrak 4 Brooklyn Progress • November/December 2018
Center at Lakeside. “Health and wellness is certainly on the minds of those who live, work and play in Brooklyn. That’s why we are excited to be kicking off our first-ever BROOKLYN RUNS 5K Corporate Challenge. Whether you’re an avid runner, or more of a walker, this is a great opportunity to bond with co-workers and enjoy beautiful Prospect Park and its newly renovated LeFrak Center at Lakeside,” said Rick Russo, who was Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce Acting President at the time of the event. “Just Energy is proud to be the presenting sponsor of the BROOKLYN RUNS 5K,” said Miriam Stiefel, Affinity Program Director, Just Energy. “The mission of our Affinity Program is to benefit non-profit organiza-
tions while helping businesses manage their costs with competitive rates on gas and electric products. The Just Energy BROOKLYN RUNS 5K will provide funds for the Brooklyn Chamber’s work in developing a robust business environment and for the Prospect Park Alliance to maintain its beautiful grounds for use by Brooklyn families and visitors.” Prospect Park is a favorite course among serious and recreational runners. The location of the start and finish of the course loop was the southeast corner of the park at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside. Lakeside spans 26 acres and was created as part of a $74 million restoration of the southeast corner of the park by Prospect Park Alliance. Although there were medals for the top
male and female runners, runners of all levels were encouraged to participate in the event. Dawud Abdul-Rashid, 22, of Canarsie, crossed the finish line in record time of 19:05.33 — a pace of 6:09 per mile. Adam Mulia finished in second place and the first-place winner for the women was Ashley Hofferber, finishing with a time of 24:16.71. All runners’ times (and more photos) can be viewed on www. brooklynruns.nyc. “I commend the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce for initiating the Just Energy BROOKLYN RUNS 5K, a run that advances the goals of workplace wellness that we’ve worked together to advance. When Brooklyn runs, everyone wins!” said Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.

neighborhood and community leaders. Batista comes to the Chamber with a wealth of knowledge and experience from the nonprofit sector, most recently serving as CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters NYC. Aside from his successful eight-year run as the CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters; where he expanded the organization’s footprint into all five boroughs, grew key programs and mentoring initiatives; Batista has developed a comprehensive management style across industries. He has devoted most of his professional and personal endeavors to public service and has served as a leader of large government departments as well as nonprofit and private organizations. He was later appointed by New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani to serve as Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer of Department of Housing Preservation and Development. He also served as Executive Vice President of the New York Metropolitan Region of the American Cancer Society. “This is kind of a homecoming for me. I’m a local kid from Brooklyn, who went to high school in Brooklyn and continues to have roots in Brooklyn,” said Batista. “It’s as if my career has come full circle having started in economic development at the Brooklyn Borough President’s office. I look forward to serving as an advocate and thought leader for the business community and continuing to build on the work being done at the Chamber.”

Brooklyn’s Certification Program’s Got Spirit
B
rooklyn has become a brand. Its rich history of industry and manufacturing has evolved into niche markets with small-scale food and craft beverage makers and showrooms of artistry woodwork and organic handmade skincare products. To protect the ‘Brooklyn’ brand, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, which is dedicated to supporting the local manufacturing community and strengthening Brooklyn’s economy, created the Brooklyn-Made certification program in 2014 which certifies companies that are manufacturing goods here in Brooklyn. The application for the certification is a quantitative measurement and consists of a series of questions where the answers are based on percentages. It is then reviewed by our independent advisory board for final approval. For both the companies and consumers, the Brooklyn-Made certification signals to customers that the products are made with the utmost quality, and that they are dedicated to contributing to the local economy. One such company, Moto Spirits, is a Brooklyn-born distillery that is the epitome of ‘Brooklyn-Made’. In 2016, Moto Spirits opened its doors in Brooklyn as the first rice whiskey distillery in New York. Everything they make, from rice whiskey to Jabuka, was created after taking motorcycle trips around the world. Moto Spirits sources ingredients locally: the apples in the specialty spirit, Jabuka, come from Wilklow Orchards in the Hudson

Valley, the spirits are aged in barrels from Van Brunt Stillhouse in Red Hook, and all of the bottles come from Rappaport Bottles in Williamsburg. Through their tasting room, they bring together the Brooklyn community through live music events with Sofar Sounds, Yappy Hour for the pups and theater events. Their future endeavors include experimenting with and making spirits from blueberries, maple syrup, concord grapes, and more from New York farms. Their work at Moto Spirits brings together their love of adventure, travel, eating and drinking, and of course Brooklyn. For more information on how to get involved in this program, and to see all 300 Brooklyn-Made companies certified to date, please visit www.brooklynmade.nyc.

Just Energy Kicks-off Give Back to Brooklyn Campaign T
he Just Energy Affinity Program kicked off its Give Back to Brooklyn campaign as presenting sponsor of Brooklyn Runs, which was held on October 11 in Prospect Park. Miriam Stiefel, Director of Just Energy’s New York Affinity Program, said Just Energy has given over $1.5 million to participating organizations in the New York area. The Give Back to Brooklyn Campaign is now offering customers an opportunity to join the program. For each residential or commercial enrollment, Just Energy will make an ongoing donation to the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. “The Mission of our Affinity Program is to benefit non-profit organizations while helping businesses and homeowners manage their costs with competitive rates on gas and electric products,” Stiefel explained. “There are many wonderful organizations that assist people and industries in Brooklyn, so channeling the money through the Brooklyn Chamber will guarantee that every dollar will be used where it can make the greatest impact.” Stiefel was born in Brooklyn and recalls fond memories of spending Sunday afternoons in Prospect
Park and Coney Island with her family. Together with Daisy Dobbins, she cochairs the Brooklyn Chamber Ambassador Committee and looks forward to working with Hector Batista, the new Brooklyn Chamber President and CEO, and his staff. Chamber ambassadors are appointed members that volunteer to help at Brooklyn Chamber events. Ambassadors also suggest programming ideas and reach out to members and potential members to help them appreciate the vast chamber offerings. Recognizing National Disability Employment Awareness Month at Newsmakers Event MOPD Commissioner Victor Calise Keynotes
V
ictor Calise, Commissioner, Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities addressed the Brooklyn business community at the latest edition of the popular Brooklyn Newsmakers speaker series. Commissioner Calise is responsible for ensuring that New York City is the most accessible city in the world and advises the Mayor and agency partners on accessibility issues. He also chairs the Accessibility Committee of the City’s Building Code. In his address, Calise outlined key agency programs that directly impact businesses – including available resources for small business owners to make their locations accessible. Under Calise’s leadership, NYC: ATWORK was created – an employment initiative that directly connects jobseekers with disabilities and businesses. “Employers are always looking to hire the best candidates when filling a position for a job. Unfortunately, people with disabilities are often mistakenly overlooked during this process.” said Victor Calise Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities. “Due to physical and social barriers, people with disabilities have often needed to work harder and go the extra mile to reach the same level of satisfactory accomplishment as their counterparts without disabilities. The result of this is that people with disabilities in the workplace will be hard working and expedient at the tasks they are given. We thank the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce for helping us in spreading this message through their celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month.” “Commissioner Calise has made great strides in connecting the business community to people with disabilities. He is a true educator and there is always something new to learn from him about what we, as employers, can do to make our facilities more accessible and the resources we can offer potential employers and employees,” said Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce Acting President Rick Russo. “We are honored to sponsor the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce’s Newsmaker Series in 2018, which brings together key business owners and executives. The program consistently features compelling presentations by exceptional leaders who serve Brooklyn, its businesses and communities. Our team looks forward to meeting new leaders and connecting with our clients and good friends at

future Newsmakers events,” Investors Bank New York Market Executive Ana Oliveira. “Brooklyn Law School is proud to partner with the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce to host this important community event to mark National Disability Employment Awareness Month. The Law School is strongly committed to supporting and advancing the rights of individuals with disabilities, especially through our Disability and Civil Rights Clinic, which provides legal representation to low-income New Yorkers and their families in matters that impact adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, said Maryellen Fullerton, Interim Dean, Brooklyn Law School.
“The NYU Tandon School of Engineering is proud to partner with the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce to help bring awareness to new resources in accessibility,” said Sayar Lonial, Executive Director of Marketing and Communications at NYU Tandon School of Engineering. “We are very pleased that the Chamber has invited Commissioner Calise to speak at Brooklyn Newsmakers and thank him for his leadership and support any initiative that helps all people participate in the borough’s economy, just as the NYU ability project - which sits at intersection between disability and technology, and supports research in client-centered, assistive technology and adaptive design for people with disabili-
ties - helps to create a city that that works for everyone.” “MOPD Commissioner Victor Calise has long been the voice for people with disabilities in NYC, and his efforts have transformed the city into one of the most accessible in the nation. We are honored to have him bring his expertise as a tireless advocate to the Newsmaker series,” said Downtown Brooklyn Partnership President Regina Myer. Past editions of Brooklyn Newsmakers have included President and CEO of New York City Economic Development Corporation James Patchett, NYC Buildings Commissioner Rick Chandler, and Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams, among others.

Reading, Writing, and Thinking M
eet the Writers turns an ordinary school day into something special. The Brooklyn-based nonprofit supports literacy and fosters a love of reading by bringing authors and illustrators to New York City schools. Through the lively exchange of ideas with inspiring writers, students become excited about books and the power of reading in their lives. It’s all part of the organization’s mission. Meet the Writers believes that reading matters and that better readers make better writers and better thinkers. Meet the Writers aims to reach all children, but has a particularly strong presence in Title I schools where the majority of students are part of lowincome families. Last school year, Meet the Writers reached more than 4,000 students and gave away over 1,000 signed books. This year, the number is expected to reach 6,500 students at 20 schools city-wide including at least eight in Brooklyn. Providing signed books for students is financially demanding but a key ingredient in the success Meet the Writers hopes to achieve. Pride of ownership is especially meaningful for students in Title 1 schools. Reaching the goal of giving each student a signed book to keep after every visit is a ma-
jor fundraising challenge and Meet the Writers continues to seek support from new funders to help accomplish it. Meet the Writers received the 2017 Innovative Emerging Not-For-Profit Award from the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Investors Foundation and St. Francis College Center for Entrepreneurship. In addition, it was recognized as a winner in the 2017 Brooklyn Public Library’s PowerUp! Business Plan Competition. Students love the opportunity of meeting an author face-to-face, and the feeling seems to be mutual. After his visit to a middle school in Brooklyn, Mark Kurlansky, author of World Without Fish wrote, “I was very moved by those kids….And I think what we need to do is educate them so they can become a power in the world. Almost every one of their questions was about how to do better.” The effect of Meet the Writers is summed up by an Assistant Principal in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn who wrote, “The kids read the book differently knowing they would get to meet the writer. I am forever indebted to you for coming to our school and helping to build a culture of reading.” You can find more information at www.meetthewriters.org.

End-Of-Year Financial Tune Up: Avoid These Two Common Investing Mistakes
T
he end of the year is the perfect time to assess our financial progress. A year-end tune up will help you feel in control of things, give you ample time to prepare for the 2018 income tax season, and allow you to set up good investments for 2019. But to avoid letting your finances put a damper on your holiday cheer, make sure to avoid some common investing mistakes. Investing in the stock market allows you to put your money to work. Historically, the Standard and Poor’s 500 Index has returned close to 10% on an average annual basis (past performance is no guarantee of future results). But most investors fail to take full advantage of this opportunity and earn considerably less than the market. In 2016, the 20-year annualized S&P return was 7.68% while the return for the average equity fund investor for the same period was only 4.79%, a gap of -2.89% annualized. The 30-year gap widens even further to -6.18% (10.16% for the S&P 500 versus 3.98% for the average investor). Why does this happen? There are two big mistakes investors tend to make—over and over.
Mistake 1: Trying to time the market It’s impossible to predict when you should
when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful.” It’s easy to feel excited about investing when markets go up. It’s also natural to experience panic when markets drop. But giving in to these emotions leads most investors to again sell when the market goes down and buy when the market goes up and securities are expensive.
The bottom line So, are you going to be financially naughty or nice this holiday season? You can avoid these two common mistakes by contributing consistently to your investment accounts each month (regardless of market swings), working with a financial professional who can keep you thinking rationally when you want to react emotionally, and sticking to your overall financial plan / strategy—instead of trying to guess the next hot stock. sell ahead of a downturn or start buying before a resurgence. When investors try to time the market, they often miss the mark, buying high or selling low—or both. In the process, they negatively affect their return. So instead of trying to time the market, plan for volatility by adopting a long-term plan / investment strategy and using dollar-
cost averaging—purchasing a certain amount of an investment on a set schedule. That way, you’ll purchase more stock when the price is low, less when the price is high.
Mistake 2: Reacting emotionally Warren Buffett, one of the most successful investors ever, famously said, “Be fearful

Local Brooklyn Boutique Campaigns Against Single-Use Plastic
O
ver this past summer National Geographic dedicated an entire issue on plastic. Within one of the articles it stated, “A trillion plastic bags are used worldwide each year with an average working life of just 15 minutes.” In New York City, plastic bags have become a ubiquitous sight on the landscape. They can be seen stuck in trees, as litter in our neighborhoods, floating in our waterways and as a general aesthetic eyesore of our environment. New York residents alone use 23 billion plastic bags annually, according to New York State Plastic Bag Task Force report. Single-use plastic bags are a detriment to the health of communities and the environment alike. From the significant recycling and disposal issues they pose as litter and the harm they create to wildlife, their negative impacts can be seen daily. Despite efforts by New York State Plastic Bag Task Force to require recycling of these single-use plastic bags by certain stores, the problems have persisted. Native New Yorker and boutique owner Suzette LaValle is far too familiar with the streets of the city and the endless clusters of plastic bags that litter her surroundings. “I was struck particularly hard after reading that National Georgraphic issue and knew I needed to get
involved in some way. I decided that I would and could start a campaign on the significance of the re-usable tote bag, within my own community.” The campaign spanned through the entire month of October, with a kick-off event on the evening of October 4. Two follow-up events, including one on October 18 – ‘Clean, Green & Beautiful’ and ‘Presenting NMBR09’ (an eco-friendly fashion designer) on October 25 took place after the submission of this article. The month also featured an interactive window installation that Suzette and a volunteering team from local college, Pratt Institute, built together. The installation essentially served as a huge recycling portal where people were able to bring in their used plastic bags and toss. Throughout the month of October, Suzette LaValle Co. donated one free reusable tote bag with every purchase over $25. Rockflowerpaper, a California-based lifestyle brand, also agreed to donate up to 200 of their blu bag totes. LaValle concluded, “Though the magnitude of the plastic epidemic is worldwide starting locally and within my own community I feel I have made at least a small impact on helping the planet.”

Beautifying Smith Street C
ourt-Smith BID Formation Effort and the Invisible Dog Art Center were thrilled to join forces and present a commissioned site-specific art installation by NYC-based artist Magda Love, named ‘In Unity There is Strength’. In a permanent and common effort to revitalize Smith street and the neighborhood, these two local and active organizations have offered curatorial advice, space and financial support to the artist in order to create a unique mural made up of six monumental panels displayed from 250 to 254 Smith street. A ribbon cutting to introduce the mural to the public was held on November 2, 2018 at 12PM. The BID Formation Effort Steering Committee led the event along with the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, and welcomed New York City council member Brad Lander as well as the artist, gallery owner and local area businesses. In a thoughtful statement, artist Magda Love spoke about her project: “This mural wishes to celebrate the history and the heritage of our beloved borough. A visual ode to Brooklyn, to their residents that come and have been coming since the 1800s from all different parts of the globe. Our neighborhoods filled of joy and stories of unity, diversity, and community has made Brooklyn a beautiful, unique place to live and to visit. Its residents have been enjoying learning about each other, becoming more cultured, more loving, more united, more engaged in their communities. We know our strength is diversity. This art piece is a homage to the beautiful and rich legacy of our communities, our landmarks, our parks, our coastlines. Brook-
lyn has earned a very special place in the hearts of its residents, and I am honored to celebrate through public arts how fortunate I am to call again, Brooklyn, my home.” ‘In Unity There is Strength’ by artist Magda Love is in viewing until the end of the year with possible extension.

She is currently working to finish the largest mural in NYC history. Magda Love utilizes her work to promote love and community. She is determined to raise about social and environmental issues. Brooklyn Organization That Helps Youth Battle Addiction Celebrates 60 Years
O
n October 12, Brooklyn Teen Challenge held a historic 60th year Anniversary Banquet at the New York Marriott at Brooklyn Bridge. Since beginning in 1958, the ministry of Teen Challenge has now expanded around the world to include 1,100+ ministry points in 110 countries. With nearly 25 million Americans suffering from drug addiction, Teen Challenge offers hope and healing to those in need. The banquet hall was filled with excitement with our alumni, resident students, staff and all of our dear friends who’ve partnered with us over the years with financial gifts, blessings, and volunteer services. There were over 500 guests in attendance to celebrate and to honor co-founder and president, Rev. Don Wilkerson, who shared an inspirational history from the very beginning when he and his brother, the late Rev. David Wilkerson, first started this ministry together 60 years ago. Rev. Don shared many of his experiences working with gangs in New York City. He highlighted how he his brother David brought gang members to Brooklyn Teen Challenge’s original home at 416 Clinton Ave., where they checked in their weapons, had a chapel service, and had the Gospel shared with them. Rev. Don said, “looking back now, I had no fear because I was too naive to even
be scared.” As the evening came to a close, Rev. Don stood up and said a heart-felt thank you to everyone! He said thank you to the students, to the alumni, to all those who were there and supported our mission and partnered with us financially over the years. Brooklyn Teen Challenge is located at 444 Clinton Ave. For more information, call (718) 789-1414 or visit brooklyntc.org

fter the highly anticipated grand opening of Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology’s first Brooklyn location in April 2018, many residents, community leaders and referring physicians were in attendance on Tuesday, October 23rd, to celebrate the official ribbon cutting of the Smith Street facility. ZP’s CEO, Dr. Steven Mendelsohn, discussed the importance of having state of the art equipment and accessibility to high quality imaging in Brooklyn. “We are extremely excited to have opened our first office in Brooklyn. We continually strive to make the best imaging easily accessible and this office will enable us to serve a new community. The people of Brooklyn deserve high quality care and we are eager to provide them with that care,” said Dr. Steven L. Mendelsohn, Chief Executive Officer.
