ho says you have to spend a fortune to have fun with the family in NYC? There is actually a plethora of free kids events, performances, exhibits, and activities going on every month of the year. Read on for 52 free things to do with your kids in Manhattan, Brooklyn, beyond!
Manhattan • Explore The Highline, one of the handsdown most fun-filled outdoor spaces in NYC. This elevated park, built on top of abandoned train tracks, features childbased programs, camps, festivals, art shows, and nature tours with the most offered in the spring and summer months. • It wouldn’t be summer without Bryant Park movie nights. Each week features a new movie to snuggle with your kids and watch beneath the stars of NYC. The lawn opens at 5pm and movies starts at sunset (8-9pm). • Hester Street Fair outdoor community market is a bevy of activity on Manhattan’s Lower East Side every Saturday and some Sundays from spring to fall. See a 34-foot-long model train layout of trains and subways that run on eight loops of track inside the New York Transit Museum Store. • Kids can learn about fire safety while also climbing on genuine fire trucks and trying on official gear at FDNY Fire Zone at Rockefeller Center. The Children’s Center at 42nd Street at the main branch of the New York Public Library near Bryant Park, the Central Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library in Prospect Heights, and the Children’s Library Discovery Center in the Queens Library have phenomenal children’s events like reading, story time, arts & crafts, and more. • Inspired by the landscapes of Central Park, the Billy Johnson Playground is one of the Park’s most distinctive play spaces. Constructed primarily from natural materials, the playground includes bucket swings, a granite slide set into a hill, and a stone bridge. Registration is conducted through a free online lottery. • play:ground NYC is a 50,000 square foot playspace on Governors Island where kids can imagine a world of their own making and experience self directed play. Modeled after a junkyard, the adventure playground lets children shape their environment using an assortment of materials, tools, water, and dirt. A family play area, open to all ages, is adjacent to the Junkyard play area. • Little architects in the making can embark on a mini model build or take part in a free class at the Lego store. Register online for these monthly offerings. Just walking around and seeing the immense selection of Lego bricks and kits (including just about every shape and size) is sure to fill up an afternoon! • Children wearing crowns join real camels, sheep, a donkey, colorful puppets, musicians, and community leaders dressed as kings in the festive Three Kings Day Parade and celebration in East Harlem. • Kids 16 and under are always free at the Metropolitan Museum of Art . Children can take part in tours, art workshops, enjoy interactive spaces, hands-on activities, art labs and family films. • Apple Camp enables kids ages 8 to 12 to get creative and learn through hands-on projects across three tracks ranging from moviemaking to coding robots. Kids attending Apple Camp in summer 2019 can choose from coding and robotics, moviemaking, or musical storytelling. • Sure, you can practice, practice, practice … but you can also just take your child and go to Carnegie Hall any old day. The prestigious hall offers family programming for families with children ages 3-10 in the form of interactive musical activities and performances. • Celebrate the spirit of community at the 14

staten Island • Visit the Sahara or get up close and personal with a leopard habitat without leaving Staten Island! The Staten Island Zoo houses animals big and small: ostriches, a southern ground hornbill, and scimitar-horned oryx along with birds of prey, foxes, kangaroos, farm animals, reptiles and an aquarium. Free admission after 2pm on Wednesdays. • Check out the many exhibits and programs at Staten Island Children’s Museum, including Big Games, Block Harbor, Portia’s Playhouse, Bugs and Other Arthropods, and Sea of Boats. Free admission on Wednesdays from 3-5 pm (September – June) and from 5-7 pm (July & August). • Spend an active day at Clove Lakes Park and enjoy in their baseball diamonds, basketball courts, football field, soccer field and multiple playgrounds. • The annual Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day features musical performers, celebrities and tennis pros, and offers interactive games and family activities including net generation tennis, face painting, juggling workshop, hair beading and braiding, balloon artists, roving entertainers, and more.
The BRonx • You won’t think you’re still in New York City once you step into Wave Hill, a spectacular 28-acre public garden and cultural center overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades in the Bronx. Family Art Project lets kids draw, write, and play together. Admission is free Tuesdays and Saturdays, 9am-noon. • Make it a “Family Affair” at the Bronx Museum. This program helps kids and adults enjoy and learn about art through hands-on art-making and exhibition tours. Family Affair includes hands-on activities, performances, guided tours, screenings, and more. • It might take than one day to fully see everything there is to see at the Bronx Zoo! From the most popular exhibits like Tiger Mountain, Himalayan Highlands, Congo Gorilla Forest, and World of Reptiles to Treetop Adventures and the Children’s Zoo (with more animals than you can imagine spread across its 265 acres), the zoo is free every Wednesday. • Spend an afternoon at the City Island Arts & Crafts Fair which features paintings, photography, jewelry, stained glass, native crafts, bath & body products, clothing, face painting, fishing trophies and more.

10 Best New (and Renovated) Parks Manhattan Billy Johnson Playground, Upper East Side Central Park, East 67th Street at 5th Avenue In the fall of 2018, Billy Johnson Playground reopened with exciting new additions that if you haven’t already checked out yet, you should definitely add to your park bucket list. While the playground has always been known for its 45-foot granite slide, there is now a second granite slide that’s smaller and more catered to little ones. While the older brother slides down the big, granite, slide, his younger brother doesn’t have to wait on the sidelines anymore and watch- he has his own slide! The water area also received upgrades with a now user-activated feature, so stay cool this summer at Billy Johnson Playground. The swing area now has bucket swings and tire swings, as well as an area to play in the sand and a rope climber. While your kids make their way up and down this playground, relax on the new benches and enjoy the day outdoors. This is the first summer of Billy Johnson Playground being open postrenovations, so head to this park today for family fun, laughter, and adventures! Hudson River Park, Chelsea 353 West Street Hudson River Park has an assortment of play areas for kids to cool off. Chelsea Waterside Park is a must-do this summer, as it was recently redesigned to include a rainbow pipefish jungle gym and slide with a hit water area. Pier 25 Play Area in Tribeca and Pier 51 Play Area in Greenwich Village have both undergone restorations to maintain the safety of these popular destinations for kids. Pier 51 Play Area has a sand and water play area with kid-activated gushers and buckets. Pier 25 Play Area has eight seasonal water features. Pier 84 Play Area is an interactive science56

DeSalvio Playground, Nolita 44 Spring Street Having just reopened this spring, DeSalvio Playground is a hot destination this summer for kids in the Soho area. Playground designs with a pop of color seem to be the trend (as they should), and DeSalvio Playground caught on with their red and neon green accents. All ages are welcome in this park, as there is an area for crawlers and early walkers, toddlers, and older kids. For the kids who love climbing, there’s a rock climbing wall and a rope climbing, as well as a basketball court for those who love to play the game or toss a basketball around. There’s also a sprinkler area and shaded benches to cool off. The benches have great views of the entire playground, as they’re positioned all around, so parents, you can relax while also keeping a close eye on your little ones! Safari Playground, Upper West Side 91st Street at Central Park West While Safari Playground has always been a unique play experience with tree houses instead of slides and hippopotamus sculptures instead of swings, the park now has much more to offer with the renovations finished this May. Head to this playground to check out the wood climbing structures, play canoes, user-activated water spray feature, play mounds, and more. Renovations were also made to better connect the playground to Central Park as well as provide a wheelchairaccessible route. This park is best for your little ones, ages two to five, so bring your family this summer to see the new additions and have fun in the park!
Brooklyn Domino Park, Williamsburg 15 River Street In June of 2019, the old Domino Sugar Factory was remodelled into a play area and the foundations of this historical place characterize its experience- sweet! With a waterfront walkway and three, huge play areas, this park is sure to impress kids and parents. The playground area has ramps, tunnels, conveyor belts, catwalks, a silo, centrifuge container, elevated cabin, and wood from the factory, all in an effort to resemble the Domino Sugar Factory. The playground area is for all ages, so bring your toddlers, children, and older kids to enjoy all of its special features. The second main part of the park is the five-block-long elevated Artificial Walk with materials preserved from the Domino Sugar Factory. This area includes Tacocina, a taco stand, and an urban beach with a lawn, chairs, and picnic space. The final section of this enormous park is the Water Square, which features sprayers to cool off on those hot summer days. Don’t miss out on this family-friendly NYC attraction! St. Mary’s Park, Carroll Gardens Smith Street between Nelson and Huntington Streets Reopened last May, St. Mary’s Park boasts brand new playground equipment that is
accessible to all and perfect for kids of all ages. Cool off in the spray showers and relax on the new tables and chairs. There are also net climbers, planting bed, and new fences, as well as a brighter and more vibrant color design. Safety, accessibility, and, of course, fun, were priorities in St. Mary’s Park’s reconstruction, which, I’m sure we can all agree, are pretty spot-on priorities. Visit St. Mary’s Park this summer for hours of family fun! Asser Levy Park, Coney Island Boardwalk, Surf Avenue, Sea Breeze Avenue, Ocean Parkway You definitely are going to want to play a visit to the newly renovated Asser Levy Park! This past Valentine’s Day, the park reopened with separate play areas for two to five year olds and five to twelve year olds, featuring swing sets and jungle gym equipment. There’s also now a spray shower, tables for adults and toddlers, and improved drainage, lighting, and pathways. Coney Island has long been a popular summer destination for families, and the renovations to Asser Levy Park only enhance its appeal.

That’s why there’s Child Health Plus, New York State’s quality, affordable health insurance program available any time of year for kids up to age 19. If you are looking for health coverage for your children, here are five things to know about Child Health Plus: You can sign up for Child Health Plus year-round. No need to wait for open enrollment – you can enroll your children today! It’s NOT limited based on income. Children can be enrolled regardless of family income, so long as they are under the age of 19. Monthly premiums vary based on income and can be free or as low as $9 per month.

There are no copays or deductibles. All preventive care is fully covered, including well child visits, immunizations, and diagnostic testing. The coverage also extends to visits with specialists your child may need for any diagnosed conditions. Dental, vision, and hearing care are included. Child Health Plus allows children to access dental, vision, hearing, and even speech care. Your child is covered in an emergency. Child Health Plus covers ambulance rides and emergency room visits to treat an injury. It also covers x-rays and any subsequent care your child may need to properly recover.
