Smooth move Eight ways to reduce stress when preparing to settle into your new home By Sara Marchessault
A
ccording to the U.S. Census Bureau Reports, about 12 percent of Americans change their residence every year. If you’re a lucky adult heading up one of these millions of moves for your family, there’s a lot for you to manage in the immediate future. Moving was a hassle before kids came along — add your munchkins to the mix and the experience shifts from “hassle” to “a root canal would be better than this.” The planning and prep for moving takes time. The actual move requires time. Settling into a new home and community takes time. Do you see a pattern here? Moving is very possibly one of the most time consuming things we do. It can also be incredibly stressful and wrought with emotion. What can you do to smooth your move and keep the stress to a minimum? Here are a few ideas:
1
Make your master checklist as early in the process as possible. Don’t even try to keep everything in your head. A moving file or notebook is a simple, yet helpful tool for keeping your thoughts straight and tracking what you’ve done and what you have left to do. Your master checklist can include the major tasks you must complete along with the steps it takes to get them done. For example, if you need to sell your house, your action items might include cleaning, listing with a real estate agent, and planning one or two day trips to allow for open houses.
2
Use the move as a time to de-clutter. There is nothing quite as stress relieving as getting rid of a bunch of stuff you don’t use anymore.
8
New York Parenting Annual Guide | 2017–2018
Moving is the perfect time to do this. Rather than pack and move all the baby furniture you no longer use and board books that have seen better days, pass them on to someone who needs them. Donate, have a yard sale, or post it online. Just don’t bring it with you when you move. Let your new place feel lighter.
3
Give yourself plenty of time in your moving plan. Plan on the actual moving of your belongings taking longer than you think. If the moving company says it will have your belongings delivered in a week, plan on two. If you are scheduled to pick up a truck to start loading at 9 am on moving day, plan on 10 or 11 am. If you end up with an on-time move, great; if not, you will have planned for the extra time.
4
Get the kids involved. Think of jobs you can give the children. Can they write on the box labels? Could they sell lemonade or coffee at your yard sale? Would they help you

sort clothes that no longer fit and bring them to donate somewhere that really needs them? Goodwill, churches, foster care organizations, and even hospitals with long-term care children’s units will take donated toys and books. Or, could the kids help to plan a going away party?
5
Does your move include the added bonus of a one-way road trip? With the magic of Google you can find the closest Chik-fil-A and McDonald’s locations, a large number of which have indoor playgrounds. You don’t have to eat there, but you can get a cup of coffee or an iced tea and let the kids stretch their legs after being in the car for so long.
6
Try to set up a new pediatrician before the move. This piece can take weeks to get in place, especially if either your old or new physician is in a particularly busy office. Asking ahead for the new patient paperwork and establishing yourself as quickly as possible is helpful when you’re trying to register the kids for school. Some school districts require that medical forms to enter school are issued from the state of residence. If you’re moving to a new state, you want to be set up in plenty of time to get your school registration paperwork complete.
7
Know where the playgrounds are in your new town before you head there. Take a few minutes while you’re traveling to your new town to look up the places you can go to run, climb, and get your wiggles out. If you’re moving in the summer, you can find local pools. In the fall, winter, or spring, you might be able to find indoor playgrounds and spaces. Write down the addresses of the playgrounds and keep them close at hand.

Moving is stressful for kids, too, and they will need breaks.
8
Schools. Shopping for schools is something that’s hard to do strictly online. This is true for neighborhood schools and preschools. You can look at a website and read reviews, but there’s really nothing like walking through a school to see and feel it for yourself. If possible, go to your new town and visit the schools you are most interested in. Choose one or two you really like and then look for places to live in those school zones. These are just a few examples of what you can do to ensure a smooth move for your family this summer. By starting your preparations early, you can reduce stress and be closer to the end goal of settling into a new home and community. Sara Marchessault is a writer, journal designer, and teacher. Making the most of every square foot Furniture styles and organization to fully maximize your living space
By Kimberly Blaker

egardless of the size of your home, space is often a scarce commodity. But the styles of furniture you choose and the way you organize and arrange these pieces can mean the difference between living comfortably and like a pack of sardines. Try the following ideas to make the most of every nook and cranny: The lavatory If your bathroom has a large dressing area or other wasted space, add an armoire to store towels, sheets, toiletries, bath toys, and other items. In smaller bathrooms, install a bath valet over the toilet. These come in a variety of styles and sizes. If cabinet space can’t be added, put a decorative basket on the floor for storing towels and washcloths. Bedchamber basics Off-season clothing takes up closet and drawer space. So purchase shallow cardboard or plastic storage containers to slide under

the bed. This storage area can also be used for holiday decorations, gift-wrapping, keepsakes, and more. Does your bedroom serve as a home office by day? If so, invest in a Murphy bed. Just press a button, and your bedroom is transformed as the bed mechanically folds into a wall cabinet. Family room When shopping for living room furniture, take heed. The size of furniture in showrooms is deceiving. Measure both width and depth of sofas and chairs, and opt for smaller styles. In small living rooms, sectionals offer the most seating while taking up the smallest amount of space. Choose end tables and a coffee table with drawers and cabinets for additional storage. Also, select a recliner instead of chair and ottoman, so when the footrest isn’t in use, it can be stored away. If an ottoman is a must, place a decorative tray on top to double as an end table when not in use. Entertainment centers may seem practical but are space

wasters if not fully utilized. Instead, choose a television with a built-in video player and safely mount it to the wall. This will also protect your equipment from curious little hands. Try to arrange all furniture against the wall. If there isn’t wall space for a sofa or chair to back up to, place a cabinet and table lamp behind it to serve as an end table. The mess hall Underutilized gadgets and gizmos take up precious kitchen space. Take inventory and eliminate non-essentials. Also, better utilize your cabinet space by purchasing additional shelving or small, stackable organizers. If replacing your cabinets, purchase taller ceiling-height cabinets. The top shelves offer extra storage for seldom-used essentials. Also, add corner shelving to the outside ends of your cabinets for knickknacks, a fruit basket, and other odds and ends. For tight eating areas, purchase a rectangular corner table with L-shaped bench seating. This works especially well for larger families, eliminating the need for multiple chairs. As an added bonus, kids won’t be able to tip their seats. For slightly larger dining areas, one of these corner tables increases usable space, so you can add a hutch or computer desk to the room. Children’s quarters Tame these little disaster zones — and create extra space — by purchasing a loft bed with built-in desk, drawers, and bookcase. Another alternative is a captain’s bed with built-in drawers underneath, eliminating the need for a separate chest of drawers. Decorate your child’s room by installing display shelving along one or every wall approximately three feet below the ceiling. Adorn the shelves with trophies, knickknacks, and other memorabilia to eliminate decorative clutter. Closet organizers maximize storage space. Add strategically placed drawers, cabinets,
14
New York Parenting Annual Guide | 2017–2018
shelving, and rods. If it isn’t within your budget, lower the existing rod a couple of feet, leaving enough height for your child’s clothing to grow. Then, install additional shelves above for storing games, toys, and seasonal items. Use plastic containers for storing toys and games since boxes are inevitably destroyed. Then label each container with its contents. Purchase containers in only two or three sizes to make stacking easy and eliminate cluttered shelves and toppling toys. If your kids share a room, install a partition between the beds. Whether built-in or movable, the partition will give your child privacy and prevent squabbles while creating additional wall space in small quarters. Odds and ends Kids’ growing digital video disc, video game, and compact disc collections can be a major eyesore. Get a storage binder to protect them, and put the covers in storage to eliminate clutter. If your foyer or mudroom has space, an armoire is essential. Tuck away books and book bags, hats and gloves, sports equipment, and more in this multipurpose cabinet. Make the most of every room in your home by installing display shelving just a foot or two below the ceiling to display photographs and knickknacks. It’s a great way to decorate and eliminates clutter. Install a wall-mounted light fixture above a reading chair or the headboard of your bed to eliminate the need for a table or nightstand. And when choosing window coverings, forego drapes and curtains. Venetian or wood blinds or decorative shades with a valance on top will create the illusion of more space. Finally, if you use your bulky personal computer only for browsing and social media, replace it with a small laptop. Kimberly Blaker is a realtor and freelance writer.

Our Goal is Zero. We’ve come a long way in getting kids covered and giving them a healthy start in life - with regular checkups, dental and eye care, immunizations, and a doctor who knows their name.
Let’s Get Every Child Covered.
But today, there are still more than 100,000 children in New York State who do not have health insurance – or the care they need to grow up happy, healthy, and strong.
Visit:
It’s a troubling statistic that we can change.
That’s why Fidelis Care is joining with New Yorkers everywhere to tell parents that learning about quality, affordable health insurance is just a call or click away.
To learn more about applying for health insurance, including Child Health Plus and Medicaid through NY State of Health, The Official Health Plan Marketplace, visit www.nystateofhealth.ny.gov or call 1-855-355-5777.
