Organize! Tips for an Easier Move By Elisa Bremner

“M

oving is chaos!” So says Katy Winter of Katy’s Organized Home – and millions of homeowners who have experienced a move. Moving to a new home brings both excitement and challenges. Some of Westchester’s best professional organizers offer advice to limit the stress and enjoy your new home sooner rather than later. Winter sees the opportunity in a move. “It’s a great way to refresh and be more mindful about what you own,” she says. “When you move to a new home, you have a dream for a [more] perfect life. Bring the joy, not the clutter.” Realtors and home organizers agree: Get rid of anything you are not going to use in your new home. Decluttering is key. Start Early Winter emphasizes the importance of getting started months in advance. “It’s no use trying to clean out the junk drawer the day before the movers arrive.” She suggests, “If you know you are going to put your house on the market, that’s the time to start organizing and clearing.” True organizing means you don’t just stuff it in a closet (remember, potential buyers look in those too). Nancy Strong, a licensed real estate salesperson at Douglas Elliman Real Estate in Armonk, explains how organizing your home can help with selling it. “An organized home lets buyers focus on the property, rather than the clutter in it.” Buyers want to imagine living in a home they are considering and, even if they are not neat and organized, almost everyone wishes they were. Strong urges sellers to get rid of anything they are not going to use in the new home. Unwanted items can be donated, sold in a

tag sale or online, given to specific people, or thrown away. Acknowledging that this task can be daunting for some, she suggests hiring an organizer to assist. Personal concierge, Judie Kaplan, empathizes with the challenge of a move. “People get frustrated and overwhelmed ... and pack everything.” A professional organizer can help you decide what you want your system to be in your new home. Are you simplifying? Downsizing? Don’t be the person who takes out a storage unit to hold the stuff they will never see until the next move. Unopened boxes in the attic or

basement are no different, taking up valuable real estate with no purpose. An organizer may end up saving you money. Professional organizers often find that they can help by listening, people often need to process before they can let go. Kaplan explains, “We talk about it, and then they’re able to get rid of it.” A friend who’s willing to hear the stories behind your stuff can also be a help. Honoring the Elders Kaplan specializes in helping older adults through the downsizing process. Planning a move for your senior parent(s)? Empathy is critical. More than anyone, older adults may need support to process change. They need help understanding that others can appreciate their belongings. Kaplan recommends using removable color-coding labels and asking siblings to put a little dot on everything they want. “This takes it off the senior to decide what to do with it all,” says Kaplan. It’s a burden with which many elders struggle. Clear and Easy Purging does not necessarily mean doing without. Moving costs are lower with fewer boxes, but the savings extend well beyond. An organized home also saves its resident time looking for lost items and money in re-purchasing items that were lost or unnecessary goods. More importantly, a clear home helps to keep a clear head. If you’re not sure what to do with all your stuff, you can call a company like Junkluggers (junkluggers.com). Charging based on a price-by-volume formula, they collect and sort your most overwhelming clutter – donating, upcycling or recycling almost everything so you know it’s going to a better place. To do-it-yourself, call the Big Brothers Big Sisters or Vietnam Veterans of America, who happily come to your door to pick up any unwanted clothing or household goods. Plan It All Out “One of the biggest mistakes people make is not planning through the furniture and

Tips for a Well-Organized Move • Purge before you pack. Only take what you need in your new home. • Ditch the disposables. Use up or get rid of food, household cleaners and other disposable items. • Enlist help. Family members, friends or a professional organizer can help you declutter, sort and pack. • Pack a suitcase. Keep a bag with essential items you need right away (clothing, linens, etc.). • Label clearly. Note the destination (room) and contents. • Everything in its place. Plan out furniture placement ahead of time, and place every belonging in the appropriate spot. • Communicate with mover. Be present (or hire an organizer) for the move and make sure things are placed appropriately.

where it’s all going to go,” according to Stephanie Golden, owner of Homestead Organizing and Staging. Sit down with a floor plan and figure out where your furniture is going to fit and how much closet space you have. Once you are ready to pack, keep track of belongings by labeling boxes and colorcoding by room. For the eco-conscious mover, reusable plastic moving bins are available. Cheaper than cardboard and more crush proof, the bins can be labeled and

stacked. Companies like EZ Bins (ezbins. com) can drop off the boxes and pick them up when you’re finished, eliminating one major cause of clutter after a move. Moving Day Be present for the move, or assign someone to do so. A professional organizer can monitor progress, making sure all the boxes are marked correctly. This is critical if you can’t be home for the move, but good for moral support even if you can. Before seeing the movers off, make sure all the boxes and furniture have been delivered to the correct rooms. Nobody ever said moving was easy, but if you’re organized, it need not be painful. With less stuff to move, you have less to unpack – and limit both cost and stress. Golden reassures, “If you plan it out well, the move will be easier and your new house will feel like home faster.”

New Kid on the Block Adjusting to a New School By Lisa Iannucci

J

essica Rogers loved traveling and wanted to see the country, so while her two children were young, she and her husband Jeff moved across the country several times. That meant that the kids would have to start new schools several times. “This year it’s their fourth new school,” says Rogers, mother to 12-year-old Rebecca and 11-year-old Alexander. “Starting a new school has challenges.” Being the new kid at school can leave your child stressed and anxious and worried about not knowing anyone and making new friends. They may be afraid about getting lost and may be concerned about liking their teachers. If your child is starting a new school this year, there are some things you can do to help make their transition a little easier. Visit the School “Whether your child is moving to a different building or will be starting a brand new school, it’s a good idea to take advantage of the days when the building is open,” says Ann-Marie Sabrsula, M.A., of The Children’s

14

School for Early Development in Hawthorne. “Spending time on the playground, walking through the building, or taking a few pictures or quick video during your visit are all ways to introduce your child to the setting.” Ask if the school offers tours for new students, but if you decide to visit on your own, call first and make sure it’s okay to walk around the building. If you’re lucky, you might even run into the teacher or be able to peek into the classroom. “Talk to your child’s new teacher and tell them what your child likes, what makes her scared or upset, some of her “favorites,” or what her learning style is,” says Sabrsula. Talk About What to Expect Part of a child’s fears about starting a new school is the fear of the unknown, so fill them in on what they can expect on the first day. “Tell them that they might feel excited or even a little nervous or scared,” says Fran Walfish, Psy.D., a New York-based child and family psychotherapist and author of The SelfAware Parent: Resolving Conflict and Building a Better Bond with Your Child (St. Martin’s Griffin, 2010). “They should know that these

are natural feelings that everyone feels on their first day at school or in a new job. That’s exactly how Rogers handled things when her daughter Rebecca was nervous about starting her new school. “Her best friend at her old school was Marissa, so we planned for Marissa to visit in October, says Rogers. “It gave her something to look forward to, but we also told her that Marissa was feeling the same things about starting at her new school too. When they got together, they talked about their feelings and it helped to cope. Get Involved in the Community Rogers wanted her kids to have a friend or two before school started, so once she moved to the new area, she signed them up for community activities. They got involved in sports and scouts, and the family went to the pool and started talking to their new neighbors. “If your child can make one or two

friends before school starts, he will be so much happier to go to school, says Walfish. “This is a sure antidote to school loneliness and feelings of isolation. Rogers says that the most important part of helping your child to adjust to a new school is patience, because they may not always have good days while they are adjusting. “Everyone has a bad day every now and then when they are adjusting to something new, says Rogers. “Just balance the highs with the lows and they will settle in eventually. Before you know it, your child’s nerves are replaced with big smiles and she is looking forward to school, their favorite new teacher and all their new friends. It’s going to be a great year! Lisa Iannucci is a freelance writer who was born and raised in Yonkers and now lives in Poughkeepsie, New York.

it off,” says Francie Malina, a licensed real estate salesperson in Scarsdale. “It is helpful to know this in case a pipe bursts or the pipes freeze.” The last thing you need is to be sloshing through a flooded basement looking for the main water valve. Also, find out where the emergency furnace shut off valve is as well. This is especially important if you smell gasoline and do not want to risk an explosion. Having this information on hand can save you valuable time in an emergency. 2. Detectors are Detecting You’ve always dreamed about owning this beautiful home and raising your family here, but before you rest your head on your pillow the first night make sure you are protecting that precious clan of yours. fires in homes with no smoke alarms (38 percent) or no working smoke alarms (21 percent). “Ensure that your home not only has working carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors, but natural gas detectors as well,” says Fiona Dogan, a licensed realtor wit Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s International Realty. “Work with your contractor to ensure they are installed in an appropriate location. My gas detector, for example, is mounted near the gas drier in the laundry.” 3. Back Up Your Sump Pump If you have a sump pump in the basement, make sure it has its own back-up generator or is run by a whole-house generator. “Westchester County has its share of winter storms, hurricanes, even tornados,” says Dogan. “If the electricity in your home goes out during one of these weather events, your sump pump will not work.”

4. Know the Professionals If a pipe does break or the furnace goes on the fritz, who ya’ gonna call? You might have just moved in, but your real estate agent can provide a list of reliable professionals in case of an emergency. “Real estate agents can provide names of quality, plumbers, carpenters, electricians, contractors, handymen, exterminators, gardeners and even great restaurants that deliver,” says Eric Stein, a real estate professional with RE/MAX Distinguished Homes & Properties in Bronxville, New York. Of course, once you get to know the business owners you can use who you want, but this list is a start. Your new neighbors can also be a source of recommendations for qualified service professionals. 5. Moving Box Know-How You can start unpacking now, but what do you

do with the boxes once you’ve emptied them? “You can keep them for future use by folding flat and storing in a dry place – moisture is the enemy with cardboard,” says Jennifer Storms, the customer service manager of Clancy Relocation and Logistics in Patterson, New York. “You can give them away too because people are always looking for used boxes on Facebook. See if your garbage company will take them during normal pickup.” Clancy Relocation also does a Debris Pickup. “For a fee, we send a crew out after the move takes place and they are done unpacking and we pick up the empty boxes and paper,” she says. “If the customer does any unpacking on the day of the move and boxes and paper are available then, we will take those away at no charge.” 6. You’ll want to meet these pros and be in their client base before the air conditioning breaks during a heat wave or the heat dies during a winter freeze. If you are not a contract customer, you’ll encounter much longer wait times for a service technician to come to your house. Pretty as a Picture Tips for Painting Your New Home By Rachel Wallace

o you purchased your dream home. Congratulations! Now you’ve got a to-do list a mile long to get through before you’re officially moved in and hanging family photos on the wall. One task that may seem like it will be easy to check off is painting. But while a fresh coat is a relatively simple way to change and personalize your new space, completing a paint job efficiently and correctly is not as simple as just throwing a sheet on the floor and slapping some color on the wall. Go Pro “You wouldn’t try to do your own electrical work or plumbing,” explains Paul Viggiano of

There are major benefits to hiring a professional. For one, many Westchester painting companies are willing to start planning with homebuyers before the ink is even dry on the sale of the house. “I recommend new homeowners try to schedule a work date so some contractors, such as myself, can get into the house before they close,” says Viggiano. “A lot of homeowners don’t realize they can set that up, but typically as long as the agent is present we can visit and assess the house.” This leaves time to have the house

For example, he says, “A lot of times clients think the floor should be done after the painting. Both the floor contractor that I recommend and myself say that the floors should be done first. As painters we will protect the floors.” Other Considerations Of course, not everyone may be ready to paint the entire house in one go. If you’re looking to save money or to take a bit more time with design decisions, “I would advise painting the rooms with the highest traffic first,” says Susan Reische of Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “You have to live your day-to-day life there.” And if you’re interested in painting the outside of your home, you’ll likely have to wait for warm weather. “In winter it is harder to prep for exterior painting,” says Reische. “Things like power washing are more challenging. Also, it is better not to paint [outside] when there is lots of rain and moisture in the air.” After that initial meeting, a professional painter can help you determine what kind of preparation needs to be done to the walls, which colors will work best in your space, and which finish makes the most sense. “The prep work for painting is so important,” says Reische. “I’ve seen homes freshly painted for sale and it looks like the painter just slapped paint on the walls and it looks really thick and drippy and has all the wrong finishes. With a bad paint job, you might as well not even paint at all.” At the very least, your painter should be sanding the trim in your home and repairing any cracks in the plaster before they begin painting. Mitch Berliner of CertaPro Painters in Bedford Hills notes that if a home has major issues like “moisture or wall texture or even structural issues,” those things should be taken care of before paint is applied. “While paint is a great solution, the underlying issues must be resolved prior to

painting.” When it comes to finishes, “the lowest sheen is flat, then you have matte, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, high gloss,” explains Viggiano, listing the options from least to most sheen. “There are other ones in between that some manufacturers come up with,” he says, “but those are the standard sheens.” So what does that mean? “The higher the sheen,” says Reische, “the more durable and easier it is to clean.” That means you might want to opt for at least satin or semi-gloss for trim. “In a hallway or kitchen eggshell would probably be better,” she says. “Flat or matte is stunning and beautiful but better kept for rooms with less traffic.” Color The fun part, of course, is color. While CertaPro will send an interior designer to help you make the right choice, Reische shares some general rules of thumb: “In general, bright colors open up a space,” she says. “Darker colors make a space feel smaller and more intimate.” And though the Internet is a great resource for design inspiration, it’s important to take your ideas off-screen to test them out. “Paint on a poster board and walk around with it to test it in different lights,”

she suggests. “Or you could paint it directly on the wall since you’re having your wall painted anyway. Live with it for a few days.” Houlihan Lawrence agent Kim Arenas notes that more and more homeowners are opting to keep their color schemes neutral. “A hot color right now is Marilyn’s Dress by Benjamin Moore,” she says. “It’s kind of a very, very light bluish gray.” Wendy Hughes, a Certified Interior Decorator with Wallauer’s Paint and Design Center in Scarsdale agrees. “Gray is quite popular and a good neutral choice,” she says. “And while there is no true gray there are many shades to select from.” For those that are looking for a warm feel Hughes advises her clients to choose grays with a taupe tone, and if you prefer a cool gray those would have a blue or green undertone. “A soft warm gray works especially well with bold accent colors,” she says. Hughes is fond of saying ‘the walls don’t

need to do the talking,’ meaning accessories such as throw pillows, bedding, area rugs and draperies can carry the color load. If you purchase a new home and don’t have furniture yet she advises staying with a shade of off-white or cream so it is easier to decorate. If you do have even a few signature pieces you can be inspired by what you do have. Even if it’s throw pillows, bedding or area rugs you can find inspiration in designing and painting the room with these accents in mind. “I would suggest avoiding the accent wall,” says Hughes. “It’s becoming a little too overdone lately.” Besides paint she suggests that a new homeowner consider wallpaper. “Wallpaper is a great way to introduce color and texture and it has never gone out of style.” Happy painting! Shopping Make sure to scope out the downtown of your new neighborhood to investigate the shops that are convenient. Look for the shops you will be using regularly such as a grocery store, pharmacy, dry cleaner, gym, coffee shop or delicatessen and maybe a nail salon and hardware store. You might want to drive to two or three nearby towns to see what they have to offer as well. Exploring your new neighborhood can be exciting.

information on recycling programs, trash collection and you should ask if they email a newsletter that you can sign up to receive. Be sure to check if there is a recreation department. Many towns in Westchester have recreation departments that offer great classes for children – even camps – and they can be an excellent, convenient and economical choice. On the top of my list is always the town library. Today’s library is about so much more than borrowing books. The children’s section generally offers free classes for youngsters, a computer room and videos and toys you can borrow. I met some of my best mom-friends hanging out in the children’s section of the library. Don’t hesitate to tell everyone you are new in town. It’s amazing how people like to share what they know about their town.

Other Places You will also want to locate your local post office. Despite all the online services available sometimes you still need to use snail mail. Stopping by your local town hall can be very informative. They often have

Park It Visit the town park and find out what facilities are available. There might be a playground, ball fields and walking trails. Some towns have several parks and there is generally a list of the local parks at your town

oving can be stressful, that’s true, but settling into a new neighborhood can be taxing as well. Experts contend that making an effort to put down roots can make you feel more at home.

hall. You might also want to see if there is a dedicated dog park or what the off leash policies are at the local park. Getting to know other dog owners is a great way to become part of your new community Religious Center You may be able to find a religious center right in your town or you may have to venture a town or two beyond depending on what choices are available. Attending several different services can help you decide which center is a good fit for your family. You can even set up an appointment to learn more about the services they provide the community and children’s religious education classes. Getting involved in some of the volunteer activities can be another way to make new adult friends. School If you have children you are going to be

spending plenty of time involved with your child’s school. You’ll want to visit with your child to get them acquainted with the building, but ask some questions for yourself too. Find out about PTA/PTO meetings, the variety of school committees, a lunch menu and be sure to get the school calendar. Stop by the playground – it’s a great way to make your child feel more comfortable and it makes for a fun afternoon too. Neighbors Never underestimate the power of good neighbors. Be sure to introduce yourself and let them know you are friendly. Neighbors can be a good source of valuable information on local service providers – landscapers, electricians, babysitters as well as a potential new friend. The New Welcome Wagon By Jean Sheff When you are new in town making friends is important. There’s no official welcome wagon these days, so much of it is up to you. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to meet your new neighbors and expand your circle of friends.

Baby & Me Outings

Not just for babies, these locations offer fun for youngsters while still offering opportunities to meet other parents. • Local Park and Recreation Departments. Residents in Westchester are lucky that just about every town has its own Park and Recreation Department. It’s a great way to find local friends and experience an amazing array of programs – from town pools to ballet lessons and art classes to baseball teams, local rec departments are usually affordable and convenient. Call or visit the website of your local town hall for more information on what your town offers. Westchester County also has a Parks and Recreation Department with information on county-wide spaces and programs. westchestergov.com • Westchester Children’s Museum.
