As host city for the 2014 Commonwealth Games the city showed the world its new and vibrant identity and it only takes a few hours in Glasgow to realise you are experiencing one of the best places in Europe. The City Centre, Merchant City and West End are vibrant and filled with superb attractions, world class shopping, fabulous dining, stylish bars and cafes as well as wonderful nightlife. Regardless of your budget or length of stay Glasgow has something for everyone. Getting around is easy with its compact size and easy grid layout. Exploring the city centre on foot is a great idea. From most downtown hotels you are within easy reach of a huge range of shopping, dining and entertainment choices. There is so much to do and such variety it’s no wonder that Glasgow is

recognised as the best UK shopping, dining and late night destination outside of London. The city’s attractions are stunning and not at all expensive to visit. Many have free entry while others charge really low entry fees. Separated, sanitised and safe: Glasgow Taxis’ campaign to provide cleanest transport in Scotland

lasgow has an excellent transport system that makes exploring the city easy and affordable. If you arrive by air into Glasgow International the best tip is to use the Glasgow Shuttle airport to city bus link which operates up to every 10 minutes, 24 hours a day. Once in the city there are lots of ways to get about but if you are in town for more than one day then one of the best ways to see more of the city for less and sample the top attractions is to buy a ticket on the red, open top City Sightseeing bus tour. Your ticket is valid for two days and you can hop on/hop off as often as you like. Or jump onto The Subway, Glasgow’s unique underground rail network. These fast little trains will carry you around under the city and makes exploring the West End, South Side and other neighbourhoods really easy. Enquire at SPT Travel centres, they will direct you to the best value deals available. If you plan a day trip out of the city it’s likely that there is a direct fast train or bus service to your destination. Edinburgh, Stirling and the Loch Lomond area are no more than 50 minutes away and easily visited in one day. For trips further out you can get great car rental rates from Arnold Clark, a local and reliable rental company.

he Glasgow Subway is an underground light rapid transit line which opened on December 14, 1896, it is the third-oldest underground metro system in the world after the London Underground and the Budapest Metro. It is also one of the very few railways in the world with a track running gauge of 4 ft (1,219 mm). Formerly a cable railway, the Subway was later electrified, but its two circular tracks were never expanded. The line was originally known as the Glasgow District Subway, but was later renamed Glasgow Subway Railway until it was taken over by the Glasgow Corporation who renamed it the

o virus has halted Glasgows thirst for great coffee! The past ten years have seen a boom in excellent coffee shops in the city centre as well as Glasgow's West, East and Southside neighbourhoods. It's now easier than ever to find a perfect flat white and with lockdown guidelines for businesses allowing takeaway many coffee businesses are operating and still caffeinating the city! Local coffee roaster and hosts of Scotlands biggest coffee gathering, the Glasgow Coffee Festival, Dear Green Coffee Roasters was established in central Glasgow in 2011 and supply many local cafes, restaurants and hotels

with freshly roasted speciality grade coffee beans. Sourcing the raw product seasonally and ethically from all over the coffee producing world, the coffee obsessives take their name from their home city known as the 'Dear Green Place' and are located - just a stone's throw away from the legendary music venue and marketplace, the Barrowlands. A wander from the roastery will take you to Dear Green's coffee bar Project at 60 Osbourne Street, to their friends Spitfire on Candleriggs and from there to the institution that is Riverhill Coffee Bar on Gordon Street. A wander up the hill to St Vincent Street takes you past many

he future of Scotland’s most famous tearoom is under threat due to the impact of coronavirus. It is calling for Mackintosh, Art and Scottish Heritage lovers to keep the organisation open and to protect the jobs of the young people it employs. The tearooms, first opened by Miss Catherine Cranston in 1903 and designed by world famous architect and artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh, fell into disrepair for years, before being painstakingly restored by the charity The Willow Tea Rooms Trust. After years of hard work, the building was re-opened to the public in 2018 as a tearoom and exhibition space named Mackintosh at the Willow. The not-for-profit organisation now operates as a working tearoom, serving Scottish food and drink to art-lovers who come from around the world to experience one of the few surviving examples of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s designs. Every penny made in the tearooms is then reinvested to protect this important part of Scotland’s cultural heritage, while providing subsidised education to schools and employing and training vulnerable young people through its work with The Prince’s Trust and other charities. This important work is now under threat due to the impact of coronavirus, and the organisation is asking for donations to help them raise enough funds in order keep their doors open. Caitlin Divers, Operations Manager at The Mackintosh at the Willow said: “Like many in the tourism and hospitality sector, we are facing an uncertain future. As a relatively new social enterprise without fundraising we will be unable to open our doors after lockdown

eases, and this will mean that our young workers will be out of a job, while the tearooms will once again have to close. “We are extremely grateful for Scottish Government support and the job retention scheme, allowing us to protect jobs for now, and as a not-for-profit operation, we continue to apply for any grant funding that may be available. “Even if we are fortunate enough to receive

this support, we will still be unable to meet all the costs associated with running a heritage building without generating revenue, due to coronavirus. “We are therefore asking for the support of anyone who can help as we aim to raise enough money to help safeguard part of Scotland’s cultural heritage and continue supporting young people and communities across Scotland..”

t Enoch Centre is located in Glasgow's busy city centre, one of the UK's top shopping destinations outside London nd has played a part in the city's life for more than 200 years. St Enoch Square was originally opened in 1783 as a grazing area for sheep and since then it has seen some of Glasgow’s finest landmarks come and go. The St Enoch Railway Station first opened its doors in 1876 and the St. Enoch Hotel followed in 1879. The afternoon tea will consist of a sandwich selection, french bread with smoked salmon and cucumber, two mini quiche, one scone with jam and whipped cream and a mini cake selection. Your tea will be wrapped and placed on a table outside of the bus for collection, all you need is your own cake stand, some bubbly and a pot of tea and you are ready to enjoy. The afternoon tea is priced at £13.95 per person.

O2ABC and O2 Academy where some of the world’s top artists regularly perform. There are also lots of smaller, more intimate places all around the city where you can enjoy your night. The famous King Tuts Wah Wah Hut or Oran Mor both have an awesome reputation for great music while if the very best of stand up comedy takes your fancy then a night out at the Stand Comedy Club will leave you heading back to your hotel with a smile on your face. Navvies’ Barge is a social enterprise canal boat moored at Applecross Basin. The barge runs boat trips along Glasgow’s stretch of the canal and hosts a café and a variety of workshops, making the waterway more accessible to people in the local community. Customers can enjoy a day out on the barge, make themselves at home on-board with a buffet and relax their way along the canal. The barge is also shared with community groups in order to open up the canal and the benefits of time on the water with as many people as possible. Established as a workers’ co-operative, Navvies’ Barge pays tribute to the workers who made the canal – the navvies. The social enterprise aims to empower people in their work and remind them of the power of worker solidarity.

Glasgow Tool Library

Glasgow Tool Library is a charity located at Civic House which lends and share tools, instead of books. They also hold classes, workshops and events that teach a range of craft, DIY and sustainability skills and knowledge. Glasgow Tool Library collects donations of tools from those that no longer use them, repairs and cares for them, and saves them from going to landfill. Hamiltonhill Claypits Local Nature Reserve

Hamiltonhill Claypits Local Nature Reserve is an urban oasis, just a mile from Glasgow city centre. An inner-city parkland, the Claypits is a 950 hectare greenspace, home to an array of plants, trees and wildlife including roe deer, peregrine falcons, whitethroat warblers and a host of waterfowl. Originally the home of a clay quarry used when the Forth and Clyde Canal was first built in the late 1700s, it was also the site of a foundry, glassworks and boat-building yard. The Loading Bay Skatepark

G4 9XE www.theloadingbayglasgow.com Glasgow’s first and only indoor skatepark, The Loading Bay is the latest addition to north Glasgow’s alternative urban sports playground. The 30,000 sq ft space features a street plaza, a 60ft long bowl, movable modular ramps and training room with trampolines, gymnastics flooring and foam pits and a café. The Loading Bay is the result of a collaboration between internationally acclaimed skate ramp company Vision Ramps, whose past collaborators include Red Bull and the team behind the new James Bond movie, and Scottish Canals. It is fast becoming a favourite spot for pros and beginners alike.
