out with a vacation not too far from home. Our well-known love of shoes led us to kidnap a few pairs for spring and take them to the Myriad Botanical Gardens for a photo shoot. The combination of warmth, greenery and sandals made us think... we have got to start writing travel pieces! Moving on a few blocks north, we met and photographed the talented Glen Gentele, Director of the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. Get to know Glen and celebrate the museum’s 10th anniversary of the move into its new home. Fittingly, the work of famous glass artist Dale Chihuly is the heart of the celebration – just

Spring Break, live outdoor music, green beer, and the St. Patty’s Day Parade all mark the beginning of spring in Bricktown.
And this year, without exception, there is
more to do to keep the whole family entertained! It wouldn’t be March in Bricktown without the St. Patty’s Day Parade! This year, you can come for the parade, and stay for the music - live music that is - with the 21st Annual St. Patty’s Day Block Party. Both will be Saturday, March 17th. Presented by the Oklahoma Chevy Team Dealers, the block party begins at noon and continues to midnight. Located at the corner of Sheridan and Oklahoma Avenue, visitors can enjoy live music, green beer, soft drinks, and more. The parade begins at 1 p.m., and will make its way through Bricktown on Sheridan Avenue. If you love a parade, you can’t miss it. Inside sources tell me that this year will be the best! If a parade and live music isn’t enough, you might want to check out the RedHawks Field in Bricktown. High schools from across the state will be playing in the

BRICKTOWN
BREWERY TAPWERKS ALE HOUSE Stor y by Adriane Scherer Photographs by Erick Gfeller
The theaters, art galleries, and museums of downtown Oklahoma City are no doubt keeping our history gurus entertained, but for some, history is not exactly love at first sight. So with all the talk of stockyards, land-runs and our Native-American pride, please fill me in… who exactly is looking out for our most loyal Bricktown population: the beer-connoisseur?

Each floor at Tapwerks has its own mood. On the ground floor you can’t miss the famous beer wall. As if 106 different beer taps isn’t enough, maybe they are just showing off by coating it in copper as well (cocky or confident you decide). History may not be love at first sight, but after seeing that wall… beer is! The polished wood floors and extravagant stairwells reflect the building’s originality. Be sure to climb the stairs to the second floor. There is more entertainment and a little different atmosphere. Either way you are going to find a great time, great beer, and a full menu. Don’t be fooled by their focus on hops, liquor, wine, and hard cider. They have terrific food as well. Tapwerks offers house made recipes with local ingredients. You will find burgers, entrees, appetizers, desserts, AND kids under 12 eat free! When Jeremy and Kristy Witzke took ownership of Tapwerks in 2008, they chose General Manager, Greg Powell, and later Assistant Manager, Courtney Larry, to help them out. Cristian Contreras kept his position as executive chef when the restaurant changed hands from Woolum to Witzke, and they all worked together to develop the menu, in which they March 2012

Start outside with beer trucks, live bands, and a DJ. Later, make your way inside for “Dante and the Hawks” at 10pm on the second floor. The live music isn’t a secret but the beer they are keeping hush. Larry says, “One of our favorite local breweries (Coop) will be brewing up something special!” I guess it’s no longer a secret… Or is it? Head to downtown and find out for yourself. With over 300 beers between the two locations, you really can’t go wrong, so spend St. Patrick’s Day right at Bricktown Brewery or Tapwerks.

Glen Gentele Has Found His Calling

noticed a New York City newspaper on the kitchen table spread open to a picture of Pablo Picasso’s 1937 mural “Guernica”, the 11-foot tall, 25.6-foot wide black, white and blue oil on canvas he painted in reaction to the Nazis’ wanton bombing of Guernica, the cultural capital of the Basque people in Spain. According to PBS, Nazi aircraft dumped 100,000 pounds of high explosive and incendiary bombs on the village to test “blanket bombing,” a new Nazi military tactic. The abstract images in Picasso’s masterpiece depict the carnage at Guernica and express the suffering war inflicts on individuals, particularly innocent civilians. Gentele still vividly remembers the day he saw the picture of “Guernica”. “I GOT it!” he said, maybe still a little amazed. The

present early. On one particular Christmas Eve, 1947 to be exact, State Theatre Incorporated was excited about doing just that - opening their new post-World War II modern-styled Center Theatre at 415 Couch Drive. The four story, 1,575-seat auditorium theatre was conceived by architect Robert Boller of Kansas City and built by the Industrial Construction Company. It boasted an elegant draped proscenium arched stage, orchestra pit, dressing rooms, and artistic décor by Chicago’s popular Hanns Teichart. Among his attractive details were art deco brushed aluminum staircase handrails, etched Plexiglas panels with intricate mistletoe patterns, stunning massive black-lighted murals, and a beautiful box office. The buildings

In the 1990’s, however, a reprieve from oblivion was brought forth as the Oklahoma City Museum of Art began looking for new space. Former director Carolyn Hill loved the idea of preserving the theatre and when Museum efforts raised needed funds for relocating, she stated to the Oklahoman on November 2, 2001 “I am thrilled and proud.” Although much of the original interior needed replacing and revitalization, the core of its historic aspects were preserved by the Museum, including the iconic staircase and etched panels. ust when you thought shoe fashion had taken it down
a notch, making way for the industry to focus on more eyeleveling trends, some refreshing ideas are taking fashionistas by surprise. Once again, we are all reconsidering a new favorite to add to the line-up. At the Myriad Botanical Gardens the scenery is always green, and as we flaunt the upcoming spring styles, we noticed something about our fashion sense. Our love for shoes isn’t always green. This spring’s shoe trends are casual and comfortable, befitting the rest of the 2012 styles. They are so worthy of attention we picked some favorites from Gordon Stuart and took them on a vacation to our local tropical garden. With Oklahoma’s mild winters and unpredictable season changes… it’s never too early to start scoping out that pair you just can’t wait to wear.

OKC RIVERSPORT Fueling a Passion for Sports on the Oklahoma River By Sherry Andrusiak Photos by Georgia Read As more people flock to downtown Oklahoma City, the burgeoning Boathouse District is quickly becoming a haven for those seeking fitness and adventure. In the years since the first boathouse opened on the Oklahoma River, OKC RIVERSPORT has expanded the variety of opportunities for people of all ages to get on the water at this urban water sports venue. “When we first opened the Chesapeake Boathouse, we had no idea how quickly we would grow to become such a popular venue for water sports in Oklahoma City, and being adjacent to downtown has played a huge role in that growth,” said OKC Boathouse Foundation Executive Director Mike Knopp. “ We’re a short drive away from the office and

The family furniture originally returned to England and was used by Millvina until her death. 100 years after the tragic sinking, it eventually made a third trip across the Atlantic Ocean and now sits among the gems of Treasures Past at 1015 N. Broadway. Soon the set is going up for auction and its proceeds will benefit other survivors through the efforts of the American Cancer Society - a fitting tribute and ironic twist for those fighting such a titanic disease. After acquiring the furniture through accidental bidding a few years ago, Treasures Past owners Jon Cornelius and Laura Moran look back on the acquisition as fate. The decision just seemed natural, according to the couple, who further adds that interest in the unique set of Titanic survivor furniture is very high. All proceeds from the sale will benefit the American Cancer Society. The auction, which will take place in March, will also be featured on Discovery Channel’s cable series, Auction Kings. NEW FRONTIER SERIES FOR CONTEMPORARY ART Julie Heffernan: Infinite Work in Progress
T
he Oklahoma City Museum of Art is pleased to present Julie Heffernan: Infinite Work in Progress,
the 5th installment of the NEW FRONTIERS Series for Contemporary Art. The exhibit opened on February 16 and runs through May 13, 2012. The exhibition presents 20 paintings by artist Julie Heffernan. Spanning a decade of her career, Infinite Work in Progress will provide visitors with an in-depth look at the artist’s work. Heffernan’s work explores the intricacies of figurative, still-life, and landscape painting, while systematically layering aspects of historical knowledge into complex compositions. Her paintings appear to hover between the reality of daily existence and forces that spread across time and space. Utilizing a broad spectrum of historical references, Heffernan presents sensual narratives in an ongoing, ever changing, dialogue that describes aspects of our relationship to the planet’s natural forces and to each other. “Julie Heffernan’s work is mesmerizing, thoughtful, and beautifully executed. I think visitors to the exhibition will be astonished by the intensity of her artistic vision,” said Glen Gentele, president & CEO of the Museum.
About the Artist Julie Heffernan (American, b. 1956) received her MFA from the Yale School of Art (CT), and her BFA from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Heffernan has been exhibiting widely for the past two decades. She is the recipient of numerous awards and grants, including the Fulbright-Hayes Grant, National Endowment for the Arts: Individual Fellowship Grant, New York Foundation for the Arts: Individual Artist Grant, among others. Heffernan’s work is included in public and private collections internationally. Selected exhibitions include those at The Korean Biennial (Korea), Weatherspoon Art Museum (NC), Tampa Museum of Art (FL), Knoxville Museum of Art (TN), Columbia Museum of Art (SC), Milwaukee Art Museum (WI), the New Museum (NY), the Norton Museum of Art (FL), The American Academy of Arts and Letters (NY), John Michael Kohler Arts Center (WI), The Palmer Museum of Art (PA), National Academy Museum & School (NY), McNay Art Museum (TX), Herter Art Gallery (MA), Mint Museum of Art (NC), and Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VA), among numerous others.
