FROM THE PUBLISHER You now hold in your hands the first edition of the Black Book of Non-Profits, an annual guide to fundraising events for the charitable organizations in the southeast Michigan area, produced by Downtown Publications, publisher of Downtown Birmingham/Bloomfield. The concept for this publication grew out of my family's background of working on behalf of non-profit groups and their fundraising events in the past two decades in this area. Other areas of the country have similar publications, hence my desire to create a resource guide to charitable groups and their events for this region. This first edition is being mailed to most areas of Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township and Franklin, communities that have developed a reputation for assisting, both as volunteers and philanthropists, many of the worthy causes in the region. We think the Black Book is coming at a critical time in the world of non-profits where charitable groups are working harder to fulfill growing demands for assistance in this economy. This is part of our contribution at Downtown Publications to give back to the communities. It is our hope that this publication will help educate our readers even more about the non-profit groups, their missions and perhaps help bolster the fundraising endeavors over the next year through your participation. We spent the last several months talking to countless groups to gather information for this edition. For a first effort, we take pride in this publication, which we suspect will grow in future years. Represented in this issue are over 80 groups that host major fundraising social events each year. We offer information on each group's mission and the details of their major fundraising events. In our Community Champions section we profile an additional 40 groups that also contribute to the quality of life in the communities, many times on much smaller budgets. Of course, this publication is made possible with the support from businesses that show their commitment to the community by underwriting our efforts with their advertising, including Huntington Bank, our presenting sponsor, which saw the value and necessity of promoting the work of the non-profits in this region. We look forward to improving and expanding the Black Book of Non-Profits in the coming years. David Hohendorf Publisher davidhohendorf@downtownpublications.com
