he members of the LGBt (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender) community in Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties are an accomplished group, often-times the owners of businesses or in key decision-making positions in their careers. LGBt community members help drive the tri-county area, as they do in other metropolitan settings.

Until now, the LGBt community had no publication to help celebrate these accomplishments, while at the same time exploring what the metro area and beyond has to offer in terms of things to do and places to visit, mixed with indepth/long-form editorial coverage of the key political and lifestyle issues still facing this important “niche population. enter Xpress, a full-color monthly newsmagazine focused on the LGBt community in southeast Michigan. Produced by a Birmingham-based publishing group (Downtown Publications) that includes some of the most experienced media professionals in the region, Xpress seeks to provide the LGBt community with a solid editorial product each month that caters to their reading interests in an upscale magazine-style publication. the print product is augmented by a companion website (xpressmi.com) that is updated each week and sometimes more frequently as breaking-news dictates. the impetus for Xpress came from the LGBt community, some members of which approached the publishing group with a request for a new publication. those initial discussions resulted in the design and development of an editorial focus for Xpress, which was further refined through a series of focus group sessions and one-on-one meetings with gay/lesbian participants from a variety of professions and businesses. We have established an editorial advisory board from the LGBt community, meeting 6-8 times annually to discuss editorial issues, bolstered by more frequent phone/electronic communication between the formal meetings. In terms of Xpress as a marketing/advertising vehicle, each month 20,000 copies of the newsmagazine will be distributed free to over 300 high foot-traffic locations in the three counties. All advertising appearing in Xpress will also be uploaded to the publication's website, plus there are added advertising opportunities on the Xpress website. As a niche market, members of the LGBt community are generally considered to have more disposable income than other members of the population, to spend on housing, autos, clothes, entertainment and travel. Current survey results show that five-ten percent of the consumer market is gay/lesbian, although the most recent federal census estimates show that some of the largest number of single same-sex households are in the metro Detroit area, and more specifically in Oakland County. Further, national surveys show that nearly half of all gay men and lesbians turn to LGBt media for news relevant to this special segment of the overall population, which makes Xpress a perfect environment for marketing to the gay/lesbian population.
