The Downtown Victoria Business Association is announcing its AGM for the coming year. Just as the Downtown is changing, so is our AGM. This year, we are happy to have CragX Indoor Climing Centre host our AGM, - for those who have not been inside, you are in for a treat. CragX has reserved the mezzanine/ second level for our event – where we will offer members a selection of beverages from local Victoria breweries and BC wines. To top it off, Executive Chef Castro Boateng, will EH FDWHULQJ WKH HYHQW ZLWK VRPH ÀQJHU IRRGV Chef Castro has collaborated with Swans Brewpub on their new menu and is a well-recognised and respected chef in Victoria.
new policy. The DVBA has also been working on their own branding with The Number, and we are excited to reveal it at the AGM. The new look focuses on what the Downtown means to YOU whether you are an individual and/or a business owner/landowner.
Our AGM is on May 3 from 5-7pm to allow IRU PRUH SHRSOH WR DWWHQG DIWHU WKH\ ÀQLVK their workday.
Shifting gears…the DVBA is happy to recognize the brand new Downtown park and ride is over half-full already, with spots being reserved daily. IF you want to help with being part of the transportation solution, now is the time to engage and use the opportunities available to you. The only way for progress to work is if you choose to be part of the solution. Thank you so much for all the feedback and we look forward to seeing everyone at the AGM!
Downtown Victoria is a vibrant and exciting place to be, so the DVBA Board of Directors and staff wanted to present an AGM for our members which is representative of our downtown core. The DVBA’s team has been working hard to create a stronger downtown and you will be able to see what they have been working on over the last year and what is to come!
This is a great opportunity to present your ideas to the Board as well as to the staff and to see things from a different perspective. Once all of the business is taken care of – we hope you will stay to climb a wall; which is much like the bigger issues the DVBA works on daily.
Kerri Milton is the Executive Director of the Downtown Victoria Business Association.

I have VHHQ ÀUVWKDQG KRZ FRPPLWWHG WKH '9%$ is to working with and on behalf of downtown business and property owners to enhance and promote our downtown. The DVBA has been very successful in its ability to bring organizations together on many shared initiatives, to create a collaborative and supportive environment with focused mandates.
Councillor Margaret Lucas City of Victoria At the heart of our downtown is the DVBA – the pulse of our City. I am very proud and always excited to be part of the DVBA’s vision, community impact agenda and ability to get things done.

Just recently, the DVBA responded to downtown business owners frustration over parking woes in the downtown. They were proactive and partnered with Robbins Parking, Pattison Group, B.C. Transit, and the City of Victoria to create a Park & Ride location that offers an affordable parking alternative within minutes of the downtown core. “The DVBA cares about our downtown, so we want to help come up with solutions that make it easier to shop, work, live and play downtown,” says Kerri Milton, DVBA Executive Director. “We are excited to anQRXQFH WKDW VLQFH WKH ÀUVW 3DUN and Ride has been so successful, that a second one is in the works and will be announced shortly.”

The DVBA also created an interactive map of every possible parking lot/structure and on-street parking space in the downtown core. The map includes privately owned as well as city owned lots and gives drivers details on the number of spots, rates, and hours of operation. The DVBA supports and partners with over 24 events and festivals downtown. One of its premier events is Car Free YYJ and it will be back on Douglas Street Sunday, June 18th. There
will be nine blocks of fun and entertainment from Chatham / Caledonia to Courtenay with more than 275 vendors. A grade 4 student at George Jay Elementary won the VicPD “Name the Dog competition. Earlier this month, we had grade 4 students throughout Victoria and Esquimalt draw pictures of our new explosives detection dog. The successful student came up with the name “Bodi, which means “Bomb Odours Detected Immediately. We had a pizza lunch for the winning class with newly named Bodi as the guest of honour.

Throughout the month of March, our efforts have been focused on educating the public on fraud in our communities. Fraud continues to be a concern to us as many people are being victimized. Through our community engagement sessions, we were able to inform over 45 people in person and thousands online through our social media feeds. We hope that, through education, people can protect themselves from becoming victims of fraud.
As we look ahead to the rest of spring and summer, we are starting to encourage people to remove valuables from their vehicles. When you eliminate the opportunity, your chance of having your car broken into is minimized. Our Reserve constables and volunteers will be continuing their involvement with the Lock Out Auto Crime Program (LOAC). In years past, this program has been a great way to inform

Going Cash Less: Benefits of cashless payments – Case study on Japan Jonathan Do Royal Bank of Canada
king and the primary method consumers use to pay for things.
payments will only make up 10% of total purchase volume by 2030.

Japan is often considered the one of the most technology advanced countries in the world. Home to Sony, Panasonic, and Nintendo, it has historically been considered one of the leading countries in the world for innovation. Visitors to Japan often marvel at things such as bullet trains, vending machines, and toilets with a wide variety of options and functionality. One area where it seems that the country has fallen behind is in the area of cashless and mobile payments. This is especially interesting due to the fact that the country has had cashless payment cards such the Suica or Pasmo for decades. In Japan, cash still remains
The reason why it has taken such a long time for cashless payments to take hold is the mentality around credit cards being an enabler of making it hard to budget and running the risk of over spending. A recent survey from Japan’s largest retailer “Rakuten” shows that the Japanese still use cash for nearly 80% of their retail payments in comparison to Canada in which nearly 70% of payments are done via debit or credit.
Despite the cultural challenges with cashless adoption in Japan, the country is seeing strong adoption rates in cashless payments with a 10% increase in payments in 2016 with nearly 5 trillion yen in purchase volumes. This is a sign that even in a country with slower than normal adoption rates, people are moving towards more convenient payment solutions.
•
Business owners are often faced with the struggle of making it convenient for customers to pay but also balance the risks of fraud and higher transaction costs with cashless payments. However, the trend to move away from cashless payments continues to grow. Moneris has recently posted a note that it expects an even further drop and predicts cash

“More Canadians – especially younger ones – are tapping their cards to pay as opposed to inserting them into payment terminals. We have seen the number of contactless transactions more than double this year, which is a strong indication that mobile payments are going to see a huge lift,” says Rob Cameron, Chief Product 2IÀFHU DW 0RQHULV

Understand the Risks: Be vigilant with suspicious customer behavior. Be aware of your bank and payment processing company’s chargeback and fraud prevention policy. Ensure the signature panel is signed and verify with ID Protect your PIN pad. Keep it visible and free from tamper. Be up to speed on the technology and contactless payments: Promote and offer customers the wide range of mobile payment options. Educate yourself and staff on Apple Pay and Google Wallet Wearable technology is incorporating payment technologies in devices such as the Apple Watch.
