May 3rd marked the DVBA’s 2017 Annual General Meeting. The DVBA was pleased to host the AGM at Crag X Climbing Centre on Pandora Avenue thanks to the generosity of Kenneth Cronin who owns both the property and business. While watching climbers boulder, AGM attendees mingled and drank while enjoying delicious bites from Chef Castro, Executive Chef at Swans and owner of his own catering company. The meeting was opened by Mayor Helps, with short speeches by President Suzanne Bradbury, Treasurer Dan Sawchuk and Executive Director Kerri Milton. The DVBA unveiled its new brand at the AGM that the DVBA team has been working on with the creative minds from The Number. The new brand focuses on Downtown Victoria, not the DVBA. The work we do is not about the organization, it is about creating a more vibrant downtown. Through the design process, we recognized that Downtown Victoria means something different to each of us which is why we are proud to present a brand which has the capacity to JURZ DQG UHà HFW WKH PDQ\ IDFHWV RI RXU downtown. The night celebrated the DVBA’s work over the past 12 months including collaborative efforts with Pattison, BC Transit and the City of Victoria to bring WKH ÀUVW 3DUN DQG 5LGH LQWR WKH &LW\ RI Victoria, the DVBA’s partnership with VIATEC and the Government Street Merchants to launch the Innovation

This past year, the DVBA also won an international award of excellence for Car Free Day, started “Field Trip Fridays,â€? where staff visit one business a week to see what they do, and how the DVBA can help. The DVBA is proud to present the 2017 Board of Directors as voted by acclamation as follows: Suzanne Bradbury, President; Kathy Hogan, Vice-President; Dan Sawchuk, Treasurer; Teri Hustins, Secretary; and Directors at Large are: Eveline Black, Indu Brar, Shane Devereaux, Dave Ganong, John McCannel, Jonathan Michaels, and Grant Olson. Councilor Margaret Lucas continues as our DVBA/City council liaise. We are very grateful to this very dedicated volunteer Board of Directors and we are so excited for all the great things to come for our downtown in the next 12 months. I would like to personally thank my team for their ongoing support and determination, Kristy Fallon, Marketing; Ian Piears, Cultural Outreach; Alison Gair, ([HFXWLYH $VVLVWDQW DQG 5RE &DXQWHU Clean Team – without them we would not be able to do all the remarkable things we do for Downtown Victoria. Four Innovative Partners Make Mobility Better for Everyone
Acting Chief Constable Del Manak Victoria Police Department The month of May is going to be a busy but exciting time at VicPD as we sit down with citizens and business leaders in Victoria and Esquimalt to report back on what we heard in our 2017 VicPD Business and Community Survey project. of the DVBA and members like the Bay Centre, the foundation to better mobility has been set for others to follow.
There’s an old African proverb that says “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. Nothing could be truer when it comes to fostering a culture carsharing, with a recent collaboration by four innovative partners to help create a more vibrant and sustainable downtown core. Together, the DVBA, Bay Centre, Modo and the City of Victoria are paving the way for better mobility.
For more information on the DVBA’s special Modo business offer, please reach out to Nicole Huk at 604-9103485 or nicole@modo.coop.

Prioritizing Community Involvement Jonathan Do Royal Bank of Canada A recent report by statistics Canada noted that 48% of middle aged Canadians volunteered their time for a charitable cause. This is a trend that continues to grow, whereas in the past we considered the “midlife crisis to be reason to splurge on a new sports car or convertible. We have seen the effects of how “paying it forward can result in some of the most successful viral campaigns by some of Canada’s largest companies. Take for instance the WestJet Christmas Miracle campaign that surprised passengers with personalized gifts. Tim Hortons 10,000 free coffees campaigns that encouraged
random acts of kindness. These instances are not examples of grass-roots community involvement but shows how powerful “being positive can be for the brand of a business.
Things to Consider: • •
If you are an entrepreneur/small business owner the impact of “paying it forward or giving back to the local community can not only be a rewarding experience but can also support the branding of your business and allow business owners to connect with their communities in a more authentic manner. In the age of negative media/fake news and a stronger gravitation to things that feel authentic and positive. The ability to retain talent and create engagement can ultimately rely upon what type of values your company supports and how your business aligns to community organizations that “do good at the local level.
•
•
•
•
Find out what local organizations that aligns to your values and strategic business vision. Invite well known and respected local organizations into your business for informal huddles and share stories around how they’ve impacted your community. Offer incentives for employees to volunteer their time. Some companies offer cash grants payable to local charities when employees volunteer a minimum amount of free time. Grass-roots volunteering can be a great team building exercise that allows employees to work closely together for a higher purpose. Use community involvement as a leadership development opportunity for key staff. Employees who champion volunteering Fundraise for a local charity through book sales, bake sales, auctions, or an
open house to show case the support for a local charity that will ultimately allow the community to get a sense around what your company values is and how your people model those behaviors. Jonathan Do is the Branch Manager at RBC Victoria Main Branch. jonathan.do@rbc.com
