A Downtown Update Gratitude for Good Friends Downtown Inc marks the holiday season every year with the Hanging of the Greens, when our team, generous volunteers and the City of York hang beautiful green pine roping and festive bows around the central business district. We’ll do it again this year just before Thanksgiving. That’s a fitting time, not only because it gives the city a little extra festive flair before Small Business Saturday and Light Up York, but because it’s the natural time for us to express our gratitude. Downtown York has enjoyed another exciting year of growth, and it’s thanks to the generosity of the everyday philanthropists, businesses and others who support Downtown Inc through our Friends program, corporate sponsorships and more. Thank you all for all you do to make Downtown York, and our entire York County community, a better place. Your support this year allowed Downtown Inc to operate a year-round Clean Up Crew, assist with the lighting of the York County Administrative Center’s incredible Florentine domes and work with community partners to replace trench drain covers in dire need of repair. Parking is plentiful in York City, with 350 on-street meters and 1,260 garage spaces in three garages conveniently located within walking distance to downtown attractions.

Parking in York City garages is $2.50 per hour from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Garage parking is currently free in the evenings and all day Saturday and Sunday.
PARKING METERS
Metered, on-street parking is available in Downtown York. Enforcement hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. (Free on Sundays and holidays observed by the City of York), and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for parking meters located in the “Retail Zone.” Meters are marked with the hours of operation and enforcement. Meter Rates are: $0.05 - 3 minutes, $0.10 - 6 minutes, $0.25 - 15 minutes. A maximum of 2 hours is allowed at all York City meters.

COOKING UP A CULINARY ADVENTURE Story by: Andrew Staub, Marketing & Communications Director, Downtown Inc Photography by: Dayan Jimenez Scattered across her arms and neck, Sharmini Goins’ three tattoos spell out “heart,” “soul” and “mind.” Each one is written in a different language — Hebrew, Arabic and Mandarin — which speaks to an international background that defines both Goins’ life and her passion for cooking. Blessed with a canny ability to combine powerful flavors, Goins has taken an entrepreneurial spirit, $400 and some professional guidance and grown her business, Sharmini’s Kitchen, from an idea and a stand at Downtown York’s historic Central Market to a dynamic catering business that wows at annual events, fundraisers, private parties and more. Along the way, Goins has used her food to foster a feeling of diversity and inclusiveness, and she has proved that Downtown York’s creative culinary scene expands well beyond its well-known brick-and-mortar restaurants. And she’s just getting started. “Sharmini’s Kitchen is still in the blossoming stage of a tree,” Goins said. “It’s not just a seed anymore, but now it’s growing branches.”

From make-believe to business model As a teenager growing up in Malaysia, half a world away from York, Goins would often play the part of a television cooking show host. She’d chop her ingredients and place them in individual bowls — because that’s how the TV personalities did it — and tell the make-believe camera how she was assembling her noodle dish. Today, Goins recognizes that what was playful then spoke to her true passion for cooking. “I believe, in my heart, that it was already there. I just didn’t know,” she said. Despite the prime-time ambitions, Goins’ cooking career has humble roots. Known for making everything from curry spices to tomato sauce from scratch, Goins’ mother taught her the basics. Goins worked in the family’s kitchen, using a simple wooden spoon and bowl to mix her cake batter as a kid. Only once Goins mastered her cakes — over and over again — did her mother teach her how to use kitchen equipment. Today, years later, Goins credits her mother for instilling in her a love of cooking. Although she studied classical piano and then business computing as she traveled around the world from Europe and Canada to Baltimore and then York, she kept coming back to food. While her two pianos gathered dust, Goins honed her cooking skills. Whether it was making edible flowers so real they caused people to sneeze with false tiger lily allergies or making Christmas platters for her neighborhood, she kept creating amazing food. On June 27, 2013 — a significant date because it was her mother’s birthday — Goins opened Sharmini’s Kitchen in the bustling Central Market in downtown York.

Global flavors inspired by life While her specialties will always be her native Malaysian cuisine and English baked goods, Goins experiments with flavors from across the world. Sharmini’s Kitchen offers one of the few catering services — maybe the only one — in York County where customers can develop a menu that features Vietnamese spring rolls paired with Malaysian peanut sauce along with traditional Southern chicken and waffles. Goins finds inspiration everywhere. Dinner with her niece led to a Korean tofu dish. And a recent trip to Sicily already has her mind spinning ways to integrate the flavors of a rustic caponata into her menu. While her flavors took off at Central Market, Goins wanted to do more. She left behind the stand and transitioned Sharmini’s Kitchen to a catering service boasting the fitting tagline of “A Culinary Adventure Awaits You.” Sharmini’s Kitchen has catered the Downtown First Awards two years in a row at Logos Academy and several other annual events. She still gets a thrill when diners rave about her cooking. “That feeling? Nothing tops that,” she said. “That’s the most incredible feeling — that people remember you for that.”

Sampling New Ideas Goins is still balancing a day job with running her catering business during the evenings and weekends. Plus, she’s still raising two children — a daughter in high school and a son in college. She’s used to juggling multiple roles. When Goins started, she was the menu planner, cook, driver and dishwasher. Now, she has a team of up to 10 and has even developed a paid internship program that teaches high school students everything from tangible serving skills to intangible talents such as interacting with customers. With a mind for strategy, Goins wants to take Sharmini’s Kitchen to the next level. She’s taking the leap into the wedding catering business, plans to expand to hire additional staff and someday wants to sell gourmet sauces and spices under her own brand. Ultimately, Goins would love be dedicated to Sharmini’s Kitchen full time. Her tattoos — and the messages behind them — remind her that working and loving hard will help her along that path. “Your mind can help bring very uplifting, positive change in lives, and I find that Sharmini’s Kitchen has really been my outlet in that sense,” she said. “I get to be creative. I get to utilize myself fully. I get to be complete being the best that I can with the gift I have. So, it’s not just the purpose of creating food. To really empower people to change communities intentionally is what I do with that.”

It’s fitting that a copy of Architectural Digest sits on Patricia Maher’s coffee table. That magazine started her journey to Downtown York, where she’s lived the past 10 years. While living in Virginia, Maher saw a real estate listing for a home in York. It was intriguing enough that she drove to the city to check it out. Maher knew from the moment she drove into downtown that it was a fit. The striking architecture — from art deco to Italian Renaissance — impressed her. Decorated for the holidays, the area reminded her of Georgetown. “I didn’t choose York; York choose me,” Maher said. “It was like a magnet; it was a pull. I could not resist. I can’t explain it. It’s a little weird. I get chills when I think about it.” 14 | Downtown York | Living Downtown
When Maher told her family that she was going to move to York when she retired, they were skeptical. After all, Maher didn’t know anyone in York.
“It has just grown by leaps and bounds and the momentum is now unstoppable,” Maher said. “We’re not going to go anywhere but forward.”
But she eventually settled into a home on West Pershing Avenue, just blocks from the restaurants of the Market District, Beaver Street’s bustling retail shops and the York County Heritage Rail Trail.
Maher’s home has an old-town charm with a fireplace in the kitchen. Upstairs, a finished third floor provides interesting nooks and crannies — such as an alcove that’s just the right size for a desk.
At the time, Downtown York was just starting to see the first glimmers that something big was on the horizon. The Royal Square District and WeCo District didn’t even exist. The same 50 to 100 people came to First Friday each month.
Likewise, York fits Maher. After taking a risk, she’s become an ambassador for the city.
“Here I am,” she said, “and I like it.”
Now, First Friday has evolved into a celebration that draws thousands to Beaver Street, Continental Square and the surrounding districts. And Royal Square is home to art galleries, a hopping courtyard space and incredible public murals, while WeCo continues to grow with new residential units, innovative advertising agencies and more calling it home. Maher experiences it all. She has jumped into city life, volunteering with organizations like Downtown Inc and patronizing the restaurants around town. She sees more good things on the horizon for York.

MANHATTAN RIFF The Manhattan Riff pushed The Left Bank’s bartender Meghann Allred to the semifinals of the “Master of the Manhattan” competition last year. Enjoy this proven-delicious classic cocktail consisting of Woodford Reserve Rye, Carpano Antica Vermouth, Chocolate Port, Ancho Chile Liqueur and Bittermens Xocolatl Mole Bitters. The cocktail gets garnished with a dark chocolate maraschino cherry dusted with chili chocolate and orange zest.

Downtown York’s beloved holiday celebration, Light Up York Powered by Shipley Energy, returns on Saturday, December 7. Enjoy day-long family fun throughout the city including a scavenger hunt, art activities, holiday workshops, a chance to meet Santa’s reindeer and of course, lights! This year, Light Up York is proud to partner with York Flea for a Holiday Market in Cherry Lane that will take place from 12-7 p.m. If you are looking to do some Christmas shopping, be sure to stop by and check out unique goods made by talented local crafters and artisans. At 5 p.m., gather around the square in front of historic Continental Square to witness the main event — the lighting of the city’s tree! AND GOLD THE WATCHMAKER’S DAUGHTER ADDS METALSMITHING SPACE FOR CREATIVES

Karen Reiss Staub has spent more than two decades honing her jewelry-making skills in her Downtown York shop. Now the third-generation jeweler and owner of The Watchmaker’s Daughter wants to pass on what she’s learned.
The space is also available for rent for private workshops and events. It can be rented for a half day (four hours) or a full day (eight hours). It includes its own entrance, tables, chairs, a refrigerator, storage closet, utility sink, bathroom and storage cubbies. Staub’s own painted artwork hangs on the makerspace’s walls while her jewelry can be found downstairs.
The Watchmaker’s Daughter has added a new makerspace above its storefront, and it’s inviting creators of all skill levels to visit for silversmithing workshops and more. “After more than 20 years working here, I’m ready for something new and fresh and hope that the addition of our workshop space will attract creators of all levels to the store and Downtown York,” Staub said. “Most people don’t realize the intricacies involved with metalsmithing, and this is my opportunity to share my passion with others. I can’t wait to see what everyone creates in our new space.” The makerspace has already become a spot for First Friday celebrations, including live music and painting demonstrations.
“We’re proud to live in a community of creators that aren’t just satisfied with honing their own skills, but eagerly take their passion for their craft and pass it on to the next generation of makers,” said Elaine Bonneau, Director of Downtown Inc. “Downtown Inc looks forward to seeing the memories — and jewelry — that are made in this new space.” Staub originally started working in the shop in 1997, when it was run by her father and known as Max R. Reiss Jewelers. Her grandfather, George Reiss, first opened the family’s jewelry shop in 1945, in a space above the old Woolworth 5 & 10 store on West Market Street. The shop moved to Beaver Street in 1965.
Workshop attendees will familiarize themselves with basic metal-working skills, such as sawing and hammering. More advanced classes could also cover soldering, Staub said. Guests won’t just leave with new skills. They’ll also have a unique creation. Workshops have featured textured sterling silver earrings with gemstones, free-form sterling silver earrings, a stamped sterling silver necklace and more. Staub also hopes that more experienced silversmiths looking for a temporary workspace might also take advantage of her space and tools — and perhaps feature their handmade work in her store.
