Grandad Bluff Grandad Bluff has become a destination point for thousands and a symbol of the beautiful Coulee Region. The 600-ft high bluff overlooks the city of La Crosse. The view of the Mississippi River Valley includes the three states of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa. Wisconsin Trails magazine readers voted this “the most scenic view in the state”. The park features a shelter house, coinoperated binoculars, picnic areas and is the site of the annual Skyrocker`s New Year`s Eve Fireworks Show.
Sunny the Sunfish A quick drive north of downtown Onalaska along the Great River Road (Hwy 35) takes you to the Sunny the Sunfish sculpture and a scenic overlook perched above Lake Onalaska. Take a quick picture with Sunny and then soak in the multifaceted hues over Lake Onalaska.
Apple Blossom Scenic Drive Starting in late May, plan to bike or drive the 17-mile scenic Apple Blossom Drive to experience the natural beauty of blossoming apple trees. Take the bluff-top roads that overlook the Mississippi River and descend into the Pine Creek Valley for your return trip back to La Crescent, Minnesota. Trees are blossoming throughout spring and summer, but as you drive or bike in the fall, plan to stop and pick fresh apples, taste the local apple cider, and purchase your fall pumpkins. Winter is also an opportune time to visit the area, experience perfect snowy landscapes, and snap photos of the migratory birds of the river valley.

The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge has a Visitor Center on Brice Prairie with many displays and exhibits, a bookstore, and over two miles of trails through a renovated sand prairie. The Refuge is 261 miles long, the longest in the nation and one of the most visited. The Refuge has 96 miles of marked canoe trails, including the Lake Onalaska Canoe Trail starting at Lytle’s Landing on Brice Prairie and traveling through the backwaters to Lake Onalaska.
Wisconsin Great River Road - National Scenic Byway Up for a road trip? Enjoy beautiful scenery, access to excellent hiking, fishing, scenic overlooks, and, of course, the picturesque Mississippi River along the Wisconsin Great River Road - National Scenic Byway. U.S. Highway 35 covers 250 miles in the state of Wisconsin, from Prescott in the north to Kieler in the south.
McGilvray 7 Bridges Road & the Van Loon State Wildlife Area The historic McGilvray “7 Bridges” Road trail is located in the Van Loon State Wildlife Area in Northwestern La Crosse County. The trail is 1.8 miles in length. It was formerly a County Road and contains a unique combination of five rare bowstring arch truss bridges and one low truss bridge which was adopted from Pierce County. The seventh bridge was dismantled in 1954. The Van Loon Wildlife area is a globally significant floodplain forest which is notable for its wide variety of wildlife. It is listed under Wisconsin Important Bird Areas and is a great trail to snowshoe or cross country ski.
Wisconsin State Bike Trails Four railbed trails spanning nearly 101 miles from Reedsburg, WI, to Marshland, WI, offer some of the best hiking and biking in the region. The trails take you through marshes and valleys, along rivers, and offer access to several communities, parks, and recreation areas, including Perrot State Park, Veteran’s Memorial Park, and the La Crosse River Prairies State Natural Area. In the winter, the trails are occupied by those looking to cross country ski, snowshoe, hike or snowmobile.

3 REASONS TO CRAVE CRAFT BEVERAGES 1. Superior Conversation
Craft beverage groups are known for the variety of options to sample. Getting to compare and contrast, find your favorite brew, share laughs, and enjoy a behind the scenes tour of a local distillery creates endless memories to reflect on for years to come.
2. Greater & More Creative Variety
Many claim to have a “favorite” commercial beverage, but have they ever tasted the Hype Machine: Paradise Smoothie from 608 Brewing Co., Fieldnotes Vodka from La Crosse Distilling Co., or Frontenac Gris, a cherry and orange-colored wine from River View Vineyard & Winery? The beauty of these groups is that they tend to offer a wider selection and are allowed much more creativity to master their craft.
3. Supporting Local Businesses
Whether flavor or ingredients inspire your desire to try something new, it is hard to deny how rewarding it is to support local businesses. Familyowned, historical, or urban settings, small businesses are the pride of our communities. The La Crosse Region is blessed to have many local craft beverage groups and takes pride in supporting their success… and when the time is right, the Craft Beverage Trail is designed to do just that!

Sprucing up your wardrobe for winter outdoors and summer adventures? Try Duluth Trading Company in the historic Doerflinger Building. Find rings and things, and fine jewelry at Crescent Jewelers just down the street. Focusing on sustainable and local? Don’t miss Larson’s General or Drift Mercantile and the shops on Pearl Street. Main Street Onalaska offers fabulous choices and atmospheres for your dining pleasure. Enjoy Mary Cody’s and Maggie’s Lounge where comfort and classic dining meet. And David Reay’s Modern Diner offers home-style cooking at a lively tavern. Need something new for Saturday night? You’ll find the latest fashions just down the road at Mainstream Boutique. Although not a traditional downtown, the Town of Campbell’s shopping goes with the flow —much like that of the Mississippi River. Island Outdoors has all the gear you need to enjoy this water-focused community. Another must stop is the new AmeriDown showcasing fabulous linens and décor for your home, featuring pillows and comforters manufactured right here in Campbell! The surrounding Coulee Region’s bluffs and valleys provide for some of the most scenic areas that set the stage for exceptional opportunities for recreation, including boating, fishing, camping and picnicking. Grab Wisconsin cheese curds at Le Coulee Cheese Castle and don’t miss Friday Fish Fry’s at the Berg Hemker Olson American Legion Post 51. With a brand new Festival Foods grocery store and the popular Holmen Locker & Meat Market, Holmen is the place to shop for your favorite eats. Both of these community staples offer delicious deli items and snacks. Want to let your stomach lead you? Holmen Square, the always-buzzing shopping area, is a great place to start. Southwind apples are grown on the choice hillsides of a broad deep valley nestled on the banks of the Mississippi River. Shop in the fall when apple and pumpkin season are in full swing. River View Vineyards & Winery offer more local treats. New accommodations downtown and on the river banks make La Crescent a must stop for all.

VISITORS GUIDE 2021
Birdwatching
SUPERHIGHWAY
The La Crosse Region and the surrounding areas are home to some of the best birdwatching locales in the Upper Midwest. From bald eagles, tundra swans, and Great Egrets to bluebirds, warblers, and sparrows, the area hosts a wide range of species sure to satisfy birders. Fall is an especially active time of year with several migrating species spending time in the region, so be sure to visit these places to catch a glimpse of your favorite visiting birds.
Myrick Park, Hixon Forest, and Riverside Park
The five-mile trail running from Riverside Park in downtown La Crosse through the river marshes and into Hixon Forest and the bluffs offers some of the area’s very best birding opportunities. Observe Great Egrets and terns from the marsh’s floating platforms, look for Pileated Woodpeckers in the forested hillsides, and spy soaring raptors from the lookout atop Grandad Bluff.
Van Loon State Wildlife Area & McGilvray Bridges
The 4,000-acre Van Loon State Wildlife Area, located north of Onalaska off Hwy 53, is home to five historic and rare bowstring arch truss bridges built in the late 19th century. The Black River Bottomlands is a globally significant floodplain forest which is notable for its wide variety of wildlife. The fall is a great time to hike the path across the bridges, offering opportunities to see the region’s native woodpecker species as well as bald eagles, Red-Shouldered Hawks, and Indigo Bunting.
Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife & Fish Refuge
Covering over 260 miles of river and 200,000 acres of land, the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife & Fish Refuge is one of the nation’s largest wildlife refuges. The La Crosse District boasts one of the area’s biggest birding attractions, receiving regular yearly visits from migrating tundra swans and over 250 additional species of raptor, songbird, and waterfowl.

ANGLERS' Paradise ANY TIME OF THE YEAR
The Upper Mississippi sprawls well beyond its main channel. Visit these tiny islands, channels, and deep pools which harbor more species of fish than any other temperate-climate river in the world. Walleye is king in these waters, but you can catch just about anything here: Sauger, Northern Pike, Shovelhead Sturgeon, Large and Smallmouth Bass, Perch, Sunfish, Bluegill, Crappie, Gar, Channel and Blue Catfish, to name a few. The Mississippi opens into the 8,000+ acre Lake Onalaska, which is chock-full of Panfish, Northern, and Bass. Another popular panfish destination is Lake Neshonoc, a relatively shallow spot located in West Salem, WI. The area also offers a myriad of cold-water streams abundant with Brown, Rainbow, and Brook Trout.
When the weather warms, the backwater battles begin.

SPRING
SUMMER
WINTER
Springtime anglers turn their eyes to Walleye. As waters warm, Panfish action starts picking up, particularly in the flats and backwaters of the Black River, Mississippi River, and Lake Onalaska, which tend to warm faster than the moving waters near the river’s channel.
Bass are the best catch during late spring and early summer. Both Largemouth and Smallmouth can be found in the river systems. Look for Smallmouth in the main river channels and Largemouth Bass in the shallow backwaters. Fishing for Catfish during the warmest months of the year can be an exciting affair, with both Channel Cats and Flatheads providing action.
Walleye begin to move again and, while the fall Walleye run tends to be less lively than in the spring, they tend to be more predictable and can provide steady fishing. The first areas to catch the attention of ice anglers are the backwaters. Then, as ice creeps out from the shores of Lake Onalaska, so do ice anglers looking for some of the best panfishing of the year.
Summer ends, but the fishing doesn’t.

Half of the trip will be paddling against the current, and strong currents are possible during high water. Canoe rentals are available from the Goose Island County Park. For a leisurely paddle to Riverside Park, put in at Holiday Heights and meander past the bluffs and through the marshland. This part of the river is a shallow lake, making it an easy canoe area. Aquatic vegetation is thick in some areas and the water can be quite shallow in places. This is designated an Electric Motor Only area.

TAKE A STEP BACK IN TIME
The La Crosse Region is filled with historic locations! A.O. Jostad’s Store
Located on the corner of Main and State Streets in Holmen, Wisconsin is Jostad’s Store. The present brick building was erected in 1899. The store sold groceries, furniture, men’s clothing, and hardware. Items such as sugar, rice, oatmeal, flour, and cookies were weighed out from barrels. In 1956, the store and its contents were purchased by Jerry Dahl and Conrad Jostad, who continued its operation until it closed in 1959. The store currently houses small businesses and apartments.

VISITORS GUIDE 2021
Palmer-Gullickson Octagon House
The Palmer-Gullickson Octagon home was originally located in Neshonoc, an area about one mile north of West Salem near the La Crosse River. The home was built in 1856 by Dr. Horace Palmer, the first resident doctor of Neshonoc. When thriving Neshonoc lost its residents to West Salem because the railroad was being built, the large Palmer home was moved to its present location. In 1921 the home was purchased by Mr. & Mrs. Oliver Gullickson, whose daughter-in-law sold the property to the West Salem Historical Society. The home is now preserved and open to the public.
Onalaska Pickle and Canning Factory
Previously the Onalaska Brewery, a series of five buildings comprise what was, at its peak, the Onalaska Pickle & Canning Company complex located at 841 2nd Ave SW in Onalaska. The J.S. Gedney Pickle Company, which was headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota purchased the former brewery buildings in 1901. After five years of operation, the Gedneys pulled out of the firm and the company was renamed Onalaska Pickle and Canning Company, which operated until 1957. In 1963, the buildings were designated as one of two buildings in the city that were identified by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers as fallout shelters in the case of a warning or attack. Currently, the property is owned by D&M Recycling.
Gideon C. Hixon House
The house was built in 1859 and was once occupied by the prominent lumber baron, Gideon Hixon. You can now step back in time when you walk inside this beautifully built Victorian home. Containing most of the artifacts and original furnishings from the Hixon era, the house is now a museum standing on 429 North 7th Street in La Crosse, open Memorial Day through Labor Day. If you love history and architecture you need to see this historic house.
La Crosse Commercial Historic District
Everyone who visits La Crosse ventures to the downtown area for different reasons, but history fans will want to take a peek at older areas. You’ll want to be sure to check out the 1866 Voegele grocery and saloon, the 1870 Italianate Solberg grocery store, the 1894 Romanesque/Queen Anne Rehfuss dry goods building, and the 1940 Moderne Hoeschler exchange building. Learn more and venture on a walking tour!
Gund Brewing Company Bottling Works
We’re all familiar with La Crosse’s rich brewing history, but are you familiar with this facet? Built in 1903 by Architect Louis Lehle, this factory aimed to be ahead of the curve in superior beer bottling methods by increasing shelf life and using more progressive sanitation methods. The building has since been converted to apartments on La Crosse’s South Side.
Joseph B. Funke Company
If you’ve previously visited La Crosse, WI and stayed at The Charmant Hotel, stopped in to grab a cup of locally brewed coffee, or maybe treated your sweetheart to dinner, you’ve unintentionally visited a historic area. It’s time to go back and take another peek – built in 1898, this building used to be an iconic and widely popular candy factory. At its peak of production, the brick building employed 220 workers. Today, the building showcases its history with beautiful wood floors and exposed brick. An homage to its history, The Charmant offers chocolate upon check-in to overnight guests.
Mindoro Cut
