GETTING HERE

La Crosse

La Crosse was voted the 2019 Choice Destination by Discover Wisconsin! “For every season, there’s a reason to Discover Wisconsin.” While we may be biased here, there is official proof we rank among the best!

La Crescent

La Crescent is known as the "Apple Capital of Minnesota" because John S. Harris planted the first apple trees in the midwest here, resulting in many orchards in the present-day region. Visit every fall for their annual Applefest celebrating apple flavors the Midwest way or cruise along Apple Blossom Drive to smell and see the many apple orchards along the bluffs!

Holmen

At 14.5-acres, Halfway Creek Park is the largest park in Holmen. It is the home of concerts in the park and the yearly Holmen festival – Kornfest. Most notably, the Halfway Creek trail connects to over 100 miles of hiking and biking trails in the state of Wisconsin. This includes the La Crosse River State Trail and the ElroySparta State Trail which then connects to the "400" State Trail.

The region surrounding La Crosse, Wisconsin has a lot to offer the avid outdoorsman or woman.

Its expansive bluffs, miles of trails, and endless array of waters are all draws to the area. It wouldn’t be fair to mention this area’s outdoor connections and not talk about its laundry list of fishing opportunities. La Crosse has prospects for all types, no matter an angler’s preference, experience level, or the current season – including opportunities for conventional fishing or fly fishing, as well as the chance to fish from shore, from a boat, or on the ice.

The area boasts healthy populations of panfish, walleye, trout, catfish, and bass to name a few. As a premier fishing destination, the area attracts anglers from all over including several major tournament trails, such as Bassmaster and Major League Fishing.

Perhaps the most well-known body of water in the La Crosse region is the Mississippi River. Three pools of the Mighty Miss are located within close proximity to this region – Pools 7, 8, and 9 which also encompass the popular Lake Onalaska. Two major tributaries of the Mississippi River in this region include the Black River and La Crosse River – all of which meet at the City of La Crosse. Beyond the major river systems, this portion of the State is also home to the world renowned Driftless region which boasts healthy populations of brown trout, rainbow trout, and brook trout.

Countless miles of fishable water are available in this region. Regardless of how you want to fish, there are options for you. They can be accessed from shore, from the water, or from some truly unique locations.

Where the Driftless Region and Great River Road

COLLIDE

Choose the Scenic Route

The Great River Road is both a National Scenic Byway and an All-American Road that traverses through ten states along the Mississippi River. The La Crosse Region and our famous, Driftless bluffs proudly sit on the route. Our region is part of the 33 Mississippi River towns along Highway 35, and welcomes the many visitors the scenic drive brings every year.

VISITORS GUIDE 2023 52

We Aren’t Bluffing, We Have Ancient History

The La Crosse Region is nestled in the Driftless Region - a unique part of the world with unparalleled views and ancient, distinct topography. “Drift” refers to glacial drift: the rock and sediment deposited by a glacier as it moves over an area of land. A small piece of the Upper Mississippi Region was left untouched during the last Ice Age, leaving no glacial erosion or deposits. While surrounding landscapes were flattened by glaciers, the Driftless Region remains with the original, rugged terrain of the Upper Midwest. The natural topography reaches into parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois - however the La Crosse Region is special; located where the Mississippi River and Driftless Region collide, beside the Great River Road.

La Crosse is a true gem.

We absolutely loved our week there. It's one of the cities that has it all, from the best of the outdoors like hiking, fishing, boating and kayaking to a dynamic restaurant scene with numerous incredible restaurants to choose from, as well as great breweries and boutiques for shopping.

One of our favorite stops along our tournament trail.
