driftless region history La Crosse Historical Society
The start of the Modern Town In 1841, eighteen-year-old Nathan Myrick left New York and traveled up the Mississippi River to Prairie La Crosse. He set up a trading post in what is now Riverside Park. When Myrick left La Crosse in 1848, it was a small village of 20 settlers. By 1892, it had grown to more than 25,000 as people saw the value in La Crosse as a steamboat landing and ideal site for sawmills.
Ho-Chunk
Steamboat Commerce
Ho-Chunk people are the Indigenous people of Wisconsin, and their influence on the county of La Crosse is tied to their continual presence here. Prior to colonization, they were primarily hunters, farmers, and fishermen. The Ho-Chunk people were forcibly removed by the US Government in the mid-nineteenth century, but many families journeyed back to their homeland of Wisconsin.
The steamboat was particularly important to the City of La Crosse. From the 1840s to the 1880s, they brought thousands of immigrant settlers. The boats delivered manufactured goods and supplies and transported the products they produced. 1857 was the peak year for riverboats in La Crosse with 1,569 boats landing here, more than any other city on the upper river. By 1880, riverboats had lost most of their business to the railroads.

VISITORS GUIDE 2022
The La Crosse Region is proudly nestled in the famous Driftless Region; a part of the world with unparalleled views and an ancient, distinct topography. “Drift" refers to glacial drift: the rock and sediment deposited by a glacier as it moves over an area of land. During the last Ice Age, a small piece of the Upper Mississippi Region was
miraculously left untouched by glacial erosion and deposits. The surrounding landscapes that once featured prominent bluffs were leveled to plains and rolling hills. However, no glaciers entered one small pocket… thus the Driftless Region became the last remnant of the natural, rugged terrain that once spanned today’s Upper Midwest.
Straddling the Mississippi River, the Driftless Region of today spans more than 24,000 miles across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois. The La Crosse Region rests within the realm of the Driftless and its bluffs, filled with opportunities for authentic adventure outdoors. Written in collaboration with the La Crosse County Historical Society.
Logging Logging the extensive white pine forests of Wisconsin fueled La Crosse’s first large industry. It built fortunes for some and employed over 4,000 people. Some 20 million acres of Wisconsin forests were ceded to the US by Native American land cessions. This area was home to 33 sawmills. The forests of the Black River were depleted in 60 years, and this area’s lumber era ended shortly after 1900.

Brewing European immigrants thrived in the local brewing industry. The first breweries in La Crosse started in the 1850s. From 1868 to 1920, there were always at least four breweries running in the city, such as Zeisler, Gund, and Heileman. With the lumber industry’s decline, the brewing industry took its place and employed large numbers. In 1910, breweries employed nearly 1,000 people. After Prohibition, Heileman flourished, becoming the 4th largest brewery in the US.

Grandad Bluff Grandad Bluff has become a destination point for thousands and a symbol of the captivating Coulee Region. The 600-foot high bluff offers a bird's-eye view of the entire City of La Crosse. The view of the Mississippi River Valley includes the three states of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. Wisconsin Trails magazine readers voted this “the most scenic view in the state”. The park includes a shelter house, coinoperated binoculars, picnic areas and is the site of the annual Skyrocker’s New Year’s Eve Firework Show.

The Refuge also offers 96 miles of marked canoe trails, including the Lake Onalaska Canoe Trail starting at Lytle’s Landing on Brice Prairie and traveling through the backwaters to Lake Onalaska.

Come late May, the natural beauty of blossoming apple trees on this 17-mile scenic drive abounds. Take the bluff-top roads that overlook the Mississippi River and descend into the Pine Creek Valley for your return trip back to La Crescent, Minnesota. Trees continue to blossom through spring and summer, but as you drive or bike in the fall, plan to stop and pick delectable apples, taste the local apple cider, and purchase your pumpkins. Winter is also an opportune time to visit the area as snow dusts the trees and birds of the river valley migrate above.
These four railbed trails span nearly 101 miles from Reedsburg, WI to Marshland, WI, and host some of the best hiking and biking in the region. The trails guide you through marshes and valleys, along rivers and offer access to several communities, parks, and recreation areas including Perrot State Park, Veteran’s Memorial Park, and the La Crosse River Prairies State Natural Area. In the winter the trails are occupied by those looking to cross country ski, snowshoe, hike or snowmobile.

McGilvray 7 Bridges Road & the Van Loon State Wildlife Area The historic McGilvray “7 Bridges” Road trail is located in the Van Loon State Wildlife Area in Northwestern La Crosse County. The trail stretches 1.8 miles in length. It was formerly a County Road containing a unique combination of five rare bowstring arch truss bridges and one low truss bridge which was adopted from Pierce County. The seventh 250-ft steel bridge allowed travel to Trempealeau County for the first time and was dismantled in 1954. The Van Loon Wildlife area is a globally significant floodplain forest which is notable for its abundance of wildlife. It is listed under Wisconsin Important Bird Areas and is a great trail to snowshoe or cross country ski.

LOCAL HOT SPOTS Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife & Fish Refuge
@andrewschneyer
Covering over 260 miles of river and 240,000 acres of land, the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife & Fish Refuge is one of the nation’s largest wildlife refuges. The La Crosse District boasts one of the area’s largest birding attractions, with regular yearly visits from over 250 species of raptor, songbird, and waterfowl. Explore abundant wetland, forest, and river ecosystems year round!
Van Loon State Wildlife Area & McGilvray Bridges
@nicholas_waltons_photography
bird The La Crosse Region and the surrounding areas are home to some of the best birdwatching locales in the Upper Midwest. From bald eagles, tundra swans, and Great Egrets to bluebirds, warblers, and sparrows, the area hosts a wide range of species sure to satisfy birders. In spring, hundreds of bald eagles can be seen during migration at various locations along the River. One of the best times of year to see bald eagles is during the month of March when they gather around open holes in the ice to do some fishing. The Bald Eagle Viewing Area located on Hwy 35 just south of I-90 is a great location to pull over and catch a glimpse of these majestic birds.
The 4,000-acre Van Loon State Wildlife Area, located north of Onalaska off Hwy 53, is home to five historic and rare bowstring arch truss bridges built in the late 19th century. The Black River Bottomlands is a globally significant floodplain forest that is notable for its wide variety of wildlife. The fall is a great time to hike the path across the bridges, offering opportunities to spot native woodpecker species, bald eagles, Red-Shouldered Hawks, and Indigo Bunting
Myrick Park, Hixon Forest, and Riverside Park The five-mile trail from Riverside Park in downtown La Crosse through the river marshes and into the Hixon Forest bluff land offers some of the area’s very best birding opportunities. Observe Great Egrets and terns from the forested hillsides, and spy soaring raptors from the lookout area atop Grandad Bluff.
watching @lutzr2
Numbers of warblers and other songbirds peaks in mid-May; more than 150 species can be discovered in the La Crosse Region. Take a hike just north of Lytle’s Landing on the Brice Prairie along The Great River State Trail in the spring for topnotch views. Grab a friend and some binoculars and enjoy the sights and sounds of spring! During the fall, the artistry of nature is revealed in the hillsides as thousands of waterfowl migrate following the river highway. During the peak fall migration in late October, hundreds of thousands of canvasbacks, common mergansers, goldeneyes, mallards, shovelers, blue-winged teal, and coots gather in the Region. One of the most unique sights to see are the tundra swans who migrate through in late October and early November. Between their size and whistling song, they are truly a delightful sight to see. Stop at one of the many scenic overlooks along the Great River Road to catch a glimpse of the migration.

In my opinion, one of the most beautiful places on this planet resides in the Driftless Region that is La Crosse Wisconsin. If you're an angler, this is one of those places that instantly leaves a lasting impression. It's not if you will catch fish, but when, how many, and how big. The anticipation for my next adventure to La Crosse starts building the minute I leave. - Jim Crowley

anglers' paradise ANY TIME OF THE YEAR
Check out the La Crosse Region waterways and all the Upper Mississippi has to offer. The La Crosse Region is not only home to Mississippi River pools, 7, 8, and 9, it’s also the culmination of the Black and La Crosse Rivers and hundreds of streams and tributaries. Visit tiny islands, channels, and deep pools which harbor more species of fish than any other temperateclimate river. Walleye is king in these waters, but you can catch just about anything here: Sauger, Northern Pike, Shovelhead Sturgeon, Large and Smallmouth Bass, Perch, Sunfish, Bluegill, Crappie, Gar, Channel, and Blue Catfish, just to name a few.

SPRING
SUMMER
FALL
WINTER
Springtime anglers have their eye on Walleye. As waters warm, Panfish action starts picking up, particularly in the flats and backwaters of the Black River, Mississippi River, and Lake Onalaska, which tend to heat up quicker than the moving waters near the main channel.
Bass is the best catch during late spring and early summer. Both Largemouth and Smallmouth can be found in the river systems. Look for Smallmouth in the main river channels and find Largemouth Bass lurking in the shallow backwaters. Fishing for Catfish during the warmest months can be an exciting affair, with both Channel and Flathead Cats providing plenty of action.
The La Crosse Region’s waters turn into a feeding frenzy in the fall months. As Northern Pike and Bass bulk up for the winter, they explode on the water’s surface sending baitfish fleeing. Make a stop at one of the area’s many coldwater creeks or streams to see the vibrant array of Brook and Brown Trout as they rival the fall scenery.
Walleye begin to move again and become more predictable than in the fall or spring, making them great targets for steady fishing. The first area to catch the attention of ice anglers are the backwaters. Then, as ice creeps out from the shores of Lake Onalaska, so do ice anglers looking for some of the best panfishing of the year.

Even though I grew up in Wisconsin, it took becoming a travel blogger to truly appreciate our state. La Crosse was one of the most enjoyable family getaways we've experienced. The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe was my personal favorite activity, but the kids all voted for The Pearl Ice Cream Parlor as their top choice. We loved that La Crosse was the perfect mix of outdoor activities and a cute and walkable downtown area!
