PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF A

PRATT FAMILY LADY

Doyle is honored to auction jewelry from the Collection of a Pratt Family Lady. The Collection is highlighted by an exquisite circa 1930 sapphire and diamond ring centering a Burma cushion-shaped sapphire of approx. 14.92 carats. The Collection has a distinguished provenance: the Pratt family rose to prominence in American industry and society during the fabled Gilded Age. Charles Pratt (1830-1891) was an early pioneer in the American oil industry. Initially focusing on whale oil, he turned to petroleum and established a kerosene refinery, Astral Oil Works, in Brooklyn. Recruiting Henry Roger, he formed Charles Pratt and Company, and in 1874 they merged with John D. Rockefeller’s petroleum interests to create Standard Oil. In 1887, Charles Pratt used part of his considerable fortune to establish Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, one of the nation’s most distinguished universities focusing on arts and design.

Charles’ son Herbert Lee Pratt (1871-1945) inherited his father’s penchant for business and was also a prominent figure in the petroleum industry, becoming head of Standard Oil in 1923. A generous philanthropist like his father and an avid art collector, he divided his time between his home on New York’s Park Avenue and three country estates: The Braes on Long Island’s North Shore (now the Webb Institute); Good Hope Plantation, a hunting retreat in South Carolina; and Pine Tree Point, an Adirondacks “camp” purchased from Frederick William Vanderbilt. Jewelry in the collection reflects the refined taste of the Pratt ladies. They offer a glimpse into the world of the glamorous events attended by America’s elite. The Collection of a Pratt Family Lady comprises lots 371 through 374.
