ASIAN WORKS OF ART Highlighting the auction is a Private Minneapolis Collection rich in Chinese jades and Khmer and Sino-Tibetan bronzes (see page 12). This Chinese jade peach-shaped box is notable for its construction utilizing naturalistically carved branches to skillfully interlock both halves. The peach (shoutao) is the fruit of immortality, and the bat (fu) is a pun for blessings. Together they represent a wish to possess both blessings and immortality. Est. $20,000-30,000 For Chinese artist Qi Baishi (1864-1957), the morning glory was a favorite subject and source of artistic inspiration. In this painting, he depicts a cluster of morning glories in full bloom with their buds, tendrils and leaves entwined along a stretch of bamboo fence. One of Indonesia’s greatest Modernist painters, Affandi (1907-1990) employed an Expressionist style to depict the vividness he saw in the figures and everyday life of his culture. Affandi had an aversion to using brushes, and instead applied paint directly from its tube and smeared it across the canvas with his hand – a practice that required furious energy. The image has its genesis in Gispert’s discovery of a low-rider Escalade truck outfitted in counterfeit Louis Vuitton, and is a witty comment on the more bizarre extremes of aspirational culture. Photographs / Dec 14 OPPOSITE Les Nymphéas, a color linocut, woodcut, lithograph and screenprint from 1993, is one of several works by Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) that were inspired by Claude Monet’s water lily paintings. Through the use of bright rich colors and simplified forms, Ben-Day dots and stripes,

Lichtenstein translates the Impressionist master’s theme into his own distinctive Pop art style. Est. $20,000-30,000. Prints & Multiples / Nov 1 An early work on paper by Sean Scully (b. 1945) captures a period of more precise lines and forms than his later, more fluid blocks of color. Looking at Minimalism as well as Color Field painters, Scully developed a signature style of geometric abstraction that eschewed Hard-Edge in favor of soft painterly forms more akin to Mark Rothko. art and teaching career in his homeland. He was the first artist from Malaysia to be shown at the Venice Biennale. Doyle+Design / Nov 21 Deborah Kass’ (b. 1952) Jewish Jackie series takes on Andy Warhol’s famed portraits of Jacqueline Kennedy and replaces them with Barbra Streisand, a figure the artist has identified with throughout her life. By co-opting Warhol’s celebrity portraits, Kass creates a platform to represent a largerthan-life female celebrity, challenging mainstream ideas on beauty and status. Est. $20,000-40,000. An American color-plate rarity and one of just eight copies known of this issue, the 1845 New York edition of George Catlin’s North American Indian Portfolio was pirated from the English edition by New York lithographer James Ackerman, whose aim was to garner recognition for American artists and to encourage continuing the production of such works on native soil. Est. $100,000-200,000. Rare Books, Autographs & Maps / Auction Nov 7 United States Peace dollars of 1921 to 1935 were issued without Congressional sanction under the terms of the Pittman Act and were considered commemorative coins, with a relatively small amount of 1,939,000 produced for this date. Most examples are found in lower grades, so this Mint State 66 is a rare exception. Est. $1,500-2,000. Coins, Bank Notes & Postage Stamps / Auction Nov 7 British surveyor John Montressor’s A Plan of the City of New-York was produced in secret for the purpose of mounting defenses of British strongholds as the Stamp Act Riots engulfed New York. The 1767 first edition is quite scarce and precedes the better known “Ratzer Plan” of the city by two years. Property of a New York Collector. Est. $8,00012,000. The United States 1857 Perforated issues are highly collectible, especially the very rare Type 1a. Differentiated by the loss of detail on the top ornaments and outer lines, this elusive stamp is only found on the bottom rows of Plate 4. Mortimer Neinken, author of The United States One Cent Stamps of 1851 to 1861, states that this anomaly affected only 18 positions on the printing of 200 stamps. Est. $3,000-5,000. Coins, Bank Notes & Postage Stamps / Auction Nov 7 Military Payment Certificates were issued to U.S. military and certain civilian personnel from the end of World War II to 1973 for the purpose of minimizing black market trafficking in occupied areas and around military establishments. Coins, Bank Notes & Postage Stamps / Auction Nov 7 William Henry Fox Talbot’s Articles of China, 1844, is a salted paper print from a calotype paper negative, extracted from the first part of The Pencil of Nature. Generally considered the first commercially published book to contain photographs, its images were intended to show how the new process could be used, in this case to illustrate a collection catalogue. A group of Korean War-era memorabilia of General B.M. Bryan, Commander of 24th Infantry Division Korea, features a stylized Key to The City of Seoul presented to him by Mayor Tai Sun Kim, with a handwritten note of appreciation. The Enigma 1 machine was used by the German Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe during World War II to encode orders and instructions, using a complex system of rotors and patch cables. The German High Command believed the Enigma cipher to be totally secure; British cryptographers at Bletchley Park under Alan Turing were able to break it, giving Britain and its allies a huge military advantage that may have shortened the War by two years. An early letter from George Washington to his brother-in-law Burwell Bassett is dated 9 August 1759, just 8 months into his first year of marriage to Martha Custis. The letter regards the procurement of items for Mount Vernon and other matters, mentioning Mrs. Washington twice in addition to other notable Virginians of the period associated with Washington, including William Mercer, Henry Churchill and Colonel George William Fairfax. This refined clock case with elliptical inlays and a circular panel in the base is typical of fine New Jersey clocks of the early 19th century. The most prominent makers include Aaron , Joachim Hill and John Scudder. Est. $4,0006,000. American Paintings, Furniture & Decorative Arts / Oct 4 Furniture by George Nakashima (1905-1990) is renowned for its organic forms that incorporate the natural unfinished edge of the wood plank, as seen in these chests of drawers. Often chosen in consultation with his clients, the wood retains the expressiveness found in the graining and imperfections of each plank. Est. each $30,000-50,000. Doyle+Design / Nov 21 This George III mother-of-pearl inlaid mahogany tea chest, circa 1760, is fitted with two tea canisters and a sugar canister. These unusual mother-of-pearl-sided canisters with their engraved decoration relate to several known examples, including two George III ‘aventurine’ tea chests, one by the London goldsmith James Cox (c.1723-1800), with almost identical canisters. The country of origin of the engraved mother-of-pearl panels seems to be unknown. Est. $4,000-6,000. English & Continental Furniture & Decorative Arts / Oct 25

This Transitional Louis XV/Louis XVI commode reflects the very high quality work of Simon Oeben, maître in 1769, and his brother, Jean-François, who was named ébéniste du roi in 1754. These characteristics include the cube parquetry and rectangular breakfronted form, known as à la qrecque, developed around 1760, as well as the gilt-bronze mounts. Two of their important clients were the Marquise de Pompadour and the Duc de Choiseul, for whom they almost exclusively produced many commodes à la grecque. English & Continental Furniture & Decorative Arts / Oct 25 Vladimir Kagan’s (1927-2016) furniture from the 1950s took American homes in a completely new direction, reimagining everyday objects into works of art. Furniture & Dec Dating to the early 19th century, this elegant Federal chest is a masterful example of the use of contrasting flame birch panels and figured mahogany banding. The use of book matched veneers within a composition of rectangles on a serpentine form creates movement and containment in perfect balance. American Paintings, Furniture & Decorative Arts / Oct 4 This George II cake basket dated 1742 is a stunning example of the work of Paul de Lamerie (1688-1751), undoubtedly England’s greatest silversmith. The basket form appealed to English aristocrats’ sense of whimsy, a reference to England’s agrarian past and the source of much of their wealth.

Gorham’s Martelé silver adhered to the Arts and Crafts movement’s principle of hand craftsmanship. Exhibited in 1897, Martelé silver was introduced commercially in 1900 and ceased production in 1912. One of only 180 Martelé loving cups made, this example was presented in 1907 to John D. Slayback on behalf of the Washington Square Methodist Episcopal Sunday School. Est. $5,0007,000.
