In 1965, the Washington Gallery of Modern Art presented the exhibition Washington Color Painters, curated by Gerald Nordland. The show exalted in the achievements of a select group of Washington, DC artists whose experiments with color and canvas led to a new level of expression. This seminal exhibition included works by Paul Reed, Howard Mehring and Thomas Downing, along with Kenneth Noland, Morris Louis, Gene Davis and Sam Gilliam, as well as important women artists like Anne Truitt and Alma Thomas — several of whom later became associated with The Washington Color School.

Sunday Morning, 1947 Gelatin silver print 19 ¼ x 24 inches Property of The College of New Rochelle Estimate: $1,000–1,500 Sold for $24,375 Red Jackson, Harlem, New York, 1948 Gelatin silver print 28 ½ x 20 inches Property of The College of New Rochelle Estimate: $1,500 –2,500 Sold for $22,500 Provenance of all: Gifted by Gordon Parks to The College of New Rochelle, 1991

A photographer and film director whose compassionate vision explored the worlds of the disenfranchised and dispossessed, Gordon Parks “saw that the camera could be a weapon against poverty, against racism, against all sorts of social wrongs,” to quote his own words. He was the first Black photographer to be hired by Life magazine. An exceptional collection of large-format images by Parks highlighted Doyle’s auction of Photographs on June 29, 2020. From The College of New Rochelle, this group included American Gothic [Ella Watson], 1942, which Time magazine included in its list of the 100 Most Influential Photographs, and Emerging Man, Harlem, 1952, which was part of a Life photo-essay entitled A Man Becomes Invisible, inspired by Parks’ friend Ralph Ellison’s 1952 novel, Invisible Man. Each sold for $25,625 – A World Auction Record for the Artist.

Four additional photographs by Parks from the same collection appeared separately in the auction, each realizing an auction record for the image. These include the portrait of the Harlem gang leader Red Jackson, taken in 1948 for Life as part of a gritty series depicting gangland life. It is unlikely that any other American photographer of the period could have gained Jackson’s trust. Another stunning portrait is that of Muhammad Ali, shown dripping with sweat, looking unusually vulnerable, with no trace of the braggadocio for which he was famed. Also done for Life (in September 1966, with the title The Redemption of the Champion), this was taken as Ali, a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War, was under prosecution for draft evasion. Both Ali and Parks were at the height of their powers in this image.
