Doyle is honored to auction the Estate of Wendy Vanderbilt Lehman. Wendy was born in California to Manuela Hudson and Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt II, a pioneer in thoroughbred racing, whose father had gone down on the Lusitania. She grew up between Palm Beach and Manhattan and was featured in one of Lilly Pulitzer’s first advertising campaigns. Although she enjoyed the social circuit, Wendy chose to devote her time to her loving children and her remarkable art. Her artistic expression spanned several mediums, including extraordinary sculptures in wood and aluminum, evocative paintings in acrylic and watercolor, and her bold eclectic fashion. After attending Sarah Lawrence College, Wendy married Orin Lehman, New York State’s longest-serving commissioner of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and a great-grandson of Mayer Lehman, a founder of the Lehman Brothers investment firm. Property from the Estate of Wendy Vanderbilt Lehman comprises furniture and decorations from her elegant Manhattan apartment and her country house in Watermill, New York (Auction May 23), in addition to Wendy’s collection of fine jewelry, including a pair of diamond feather clips by Flato (see front cover. This ceramic pitcher, Femme, from 1955 by Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) likely depicts the artist’s second wife, Jacqueline Roque, whom he met in 1953 at the Madoura Pottery factory, where Picasso created his ceramics (est. $8,000-12,000).

Ellsworth Kelly’s 18 Colors (Cincinnati) is based on his 1978 painting Color Panels for a Large Wall, comprising 18 canvases that were installed at the Central Trust Company in Cincinnati. It took two years of experimenting with colors and printing proofs for this monumental lithograph (est. $15,000-25,000).

Dutch artist M.C. Escher (1898-1972) created his most popular print, Day and Night, in 1938. It is one of his earliest depictions of a tessellation, or tiling of a plane, inspired by the Moorish tiles he saw during a visit to the Alhambra in Spain in 1926 (est. $20,000-30,000).

The popular Doyle Next series of timed online-only auctions hosted on Artsy.net offers originals and editions by established and emerging artists. Featured in the April 25-May 9 sale is a 2015 monoprint by ASVP that encapsulates the duo’s combination of brash primary colors and precision design technique. ASVP matches their post-Pop studio output with projects on the streets of New York and elsewhere (est. $1,500-2,500).

Zao Wou-Ki (1920-2013) began his art training in China and immigrated to France at the age of twenty-seven. His formal Chinese painting techniques lent themselves well to the abstract styles popularized by the New York-based Abstract Expressionists. In France, artists such as Joan Mitchell, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Pierre Soulages and Henri Michaux seized on this expressive style and took it to new heights. Zao was part of this energetic time in the Paris art scene. 02.01.64 was created in 1964, a productive time in the artist’s life and the same year in which he was granted French citizenship (est. $200,000-400,000). One of two works in the May 9 sale by Street Art pioneer Richard Hambleton (Canadian/American, 1952-2017), this large-scale Shadow Portrait from 1999 continues his Shadowman series that the artist began painting in the streets of the Lower East Side during the early 1980s. The figure holds a spinning disc, a device Hambleton used sporadically, which was also evident in an earlier canvas featured in MoMA’s recent Club 57 exhibition (est. $30,000-50,000).

Samuel S. Carr (1837-1908) immigrated to the United States from England in the early 1860s. Although he spent most of his life in Manhattan and Brooklyn, he developed a special feeling for American rural life, particularly the pleasures and anxieties of childhood. In Caught in the Act, from 1885, two truant farm boys are scolded by an older girl on her way to school (est. $10,000-15,000).

Born in the Norman seaport of Le Havre, Jean Dufy (1888-1964) particularly loved the sea, sailboats and harbors, as well as music, since his father was an amateur musician. Dufyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s subjects tend to dance across the canvas in a well-orchestrated frenzy of motion and color, as seen in this lively portrait of Le Havre. The busy harbor teems with dancing sailboats making safe passage to their destinations (est. $20,000-30,000).

As England grew ever more prosperous in the 18th century, views of the Thames River showing the London skyline enjoyed enormous popularity. These two paintings by an artist in the circle of the marine artist Samuel Scott present two of the most favored sections of the river, Westminster, with its famous Abbey and Bridge, and the passage downriver from Saint Paul’s Cathedral (est. each $7,000-10,000).

New York artist Nicolas Carone (1917-2010) joined the important Stable Gallery at its infancy and held his first New York show there. Throughout his career, he produced figurative work along with his formal Abstract Expressionist paintings. In his abstract works, one sees the artist’s ability to retrieve the line of the figure in the rapid gesture of his brush. He hints of the human form without betraying the pure abstraction of action painting (est. $7,000-9,000).

Hiroshi Sugimoto (b. 1948) is a photographer known for both the technical achievements of his works and their conceptual aspects. For this early photograph from his Theaters series, U.A. Playhouse, Great Neck, New York, 1978, Sugimoto exposed his camera film over the long duration of a feature film with the movie projector providing the only source of light. The result is a luminescent and surreal image which captures a long period of time in a single image (est. $10,000-15,000).

From the Estate of Leo Hershkowitz is a group of transfer decorated pottery made in Staffordshire, England, and decorated with New York scenes. This circa 1825 platter is based on an 1823 engraving after William Guy Wall illustrating a burgeoning New York City seen from Weehawken, New Jersey (est. $1,000-1,500). Inlaid mahogany Pembroke tables, like this refined ww, were very popular in New York in the early 19th century. They served as breakfast tables, as well as for cards, writing and the serving of tea. This circa 1810 table bears an inscription indicating it was made in Poughkeepsie, 85 miles up the Hudson (est. $3,000-4,000). American silver features a Southern coin silver monteith by Garner & Winchester of Lexington, Kentucky. Consigned by the Estate of Eleanor Johnson, the monteith was presented in 1849 by John Brand, who made a fortune in hemp bagging, to his granddaughter and has descended in the family (est. $5,000-7,000).

Derived from the Buddhist religion’s fusion of a Chinese dog and an Indian lion, the ‘Fu lion’ is an important symbolic creature in Asian culture. This pair of 18th century Chinese Fu lions belonged to the famed collector Leon Levy. They feature among the elegant Continental furnishings from the Estates of Lili and Norman Israel (est. $7,000-10,000). Georgian silver in the May 23 sale includes an assembled pair of George II/III candlesticks by London silversmiths Richard Rugg (1759) and Elizabeth Cooke (1763) with shell and scroll chased bases and engraved with a heraldic crest (est. $2,000-3,000).

Designed in the ‘Gothick’ style popularized by Horace Walpole at Strawberry Hill, this assembled set of twelve Windsor mahogany and yew armchairs is of a form produced in the Thames Valley from circa 1740-1780 and considered to be the best Windsor seating furniture (est. $20,000-30,000).

DOYLE+DESIGN® / JUNE 6 Designed by the architecture firm Asymptote, the Mnemos 03 jewelry box represents a link between contemporary designers and traditional craftsmen. This silver gilt box with its sensuous lines made its debut at the Salone del Mobile in Milan in 2008 (est. $3,000-5,000). Swiss sculptor and designer Diego Giacometti (1902-1985) often rendered animals in bronze and incorporated them into his furnishings. Chat Maître d’Hôtel is a popular form that he cast for clients throughout the 1960s. As is often the case with his works, this utilitarian object combines elegance with whimsy (est. $80,000-120,000). Trained as an architect and a self-taught woodworker, Edward Moulthrop (1916-2003) created turned vessels of extraordinary beauty using woods indigenous to the Southeast. These vessels mark the return of nature to modern 20th century design (est. $1,500-2,500 and $5,000-8,000). The son of a French artist and dealer, Serge Roche (1898-1988) created stylish furnishings in the 1930s and ‘40s that reflected a strong Baroque influence, such as this pair of consoles with their exuberant plaster supports (est. $10,000-15,000).

RARE BOOKS, AUTOGRAPHS & MAPS / APRIL 25 This very special first edition of A.A. Milne’s classic children’s book, The House at Pooh Corner, is one of 350 copies that were signed by both Milne and the illustrator E.H. Shepard. It is accompanied by the latter’s original drawing for page 78, showing Owl and Rabbit (est. $40,000-60,000). From the Collection of Nancy Susan Reynolds is Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the archetypal novel of dual personality. This rare copy is the first English edition of 1886, in the publisher’s binding of peach cloth (est. $2,000-3,000).

THE ESTATE OF HOWARD KAMINSKY

Books from the library of noted Warner Books and Random House publisher Howard Kaminsky offer modern literature, such as Cormac McCarthy’s chilling 1985 novel Blood Meridian: Or the Evening Redness in the West (est. $1,000-1,500). Also featured are letters and signed books from Richard Nixon, whom Kaminsky famously contracted to write his memoirs six weeks after his resignation in 1974.

THE ESTATE OF ARNOLD “JAKE” JOHNSON

In a series of sales, Doyle will auction the library of rare books, manuscripts and photographs from the Estate of Arnold “Jake” Johnson (1930-2017) of Bozeman, Montana. A true bibliophile, Johnson was an avid collector of rare items related to travel, expeditions in India and Africa,

COINS, BANK NOTES & POSTAGE STAMPS / MAY 1 The United States Rotary Press Perforated 10 issue of 1923-25 was primarily an experiment to develop efficient printing processes, which included a larger perforation to aid in the separation of the stamps. This offering of full mint sheets showing portraits of past Presidents features nicely centered stamps, a notoriously difficult quality to find in this series (est. $35,000-45,000). The United States 1804 $5 Capped Bust with Heraldic Eagle Reverse was originally minted with a Small Eagle reverse. In 1797, it was changed to engraver Robert Scot’s adaptation of the Great Seal of the United States, with the warlike arrows in the eagle’s right claw and the olive branches symbolic of peace in the left claw, the opposite of the traditional orientation (est. $12,000-15,000).

Trade Dollars and Latter Morgan’s were developed as a means to encourage interest in International trade and to promote the use of U.S. silver. This 1883 Trade Dollar is a Choice example of a Proof only issue, and with a mere 979 produced, it offers an opportunity to obtain this elusive Proof (est. $750-1,000).

English sporting and color-plate, 19th century big game hunting, and Western Americana. Featured is an album of 97 large-format photographs of Western author Zane Grey and his party (most likely taken by his eldest son, Romer) on Catalina Island, in Arizona, and in the Pacific fishing on Grey’s yacht, the Gladiator (est. $5,000-8,000).

THE ESTATE OF LEO HERSHKOWITZ Doyle is honored to offer property from the estate of celebrated New York historian and professor, Dr. Leo Hershkowitz. Dr. Hershkowitz, who taught history for decades at Queens College and in later years at New York University, was an inveterate collector of all things related to New York City. An urban archaeologist, Hershkowitz is known to have dug for artifacts on the site of the World Trade Center before building began in 1968. The highlight of the collection is the most beautiful map of New York produced in the Colonial era. Bernard Ratzerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Plan of the City of New York of January 1776 was issued at a time of major English interest in New York during the months preceding the opening battles of the American Revolution (est. $80,000-100,000). Additional property from the collection will be offered in the sales of American Paintings, Furniture & Decorative Arts on April 18, Prints & Multiples on May 1, and others.

The event will take place within the exhibition of Important Jewelry, including jewelry from the Estate of Wendy Vanderbilt Lehman to be offered on April 24. Also on view will be her remarkable collection of colorful fashion jewelry by Iradj Moini and Kenneth J. Lane to be offered on May 23 (see front cover and page 1).
