AUCTION PREVIEW SPRING / SUMMER 2019
WELCOME to DOYLE!
Joanne Mournet, President / Kathleen M. Doyle, Chairman / Laura K. Doyle, CEO
As passionate participants of Asia Week New York, we were delighted to be Auction House Partners for this annual event highlighted by the celebration evening at The Met Asian Wing. The week embraces Asian art in New York City and brings together dealers, curators, auction specialists and collectors from around the globe. Our combined travel experiences and adventures have informed us all about universal themes and common values that are reflected in works of art in many forms, in every land. While the media is filled with serious news from all over the world, it is the exuberant stories about artists, art fairs, museum shows and new books that help us to look to brighter and wider horizons to focus on the beauty surrounding us. The TEFAF Maastricht art fair – representing art forms from cultures around the world – has turned a corner to offer more booths filled with Modern and Contemporary Art. At the same time, a smaller number of galleries still show quality classic works to complement newer art. With all of the offerings, collectors collect with passion and still the importance of “home” resonates. In two new books, a passionate collector and a designer tell the stories of homes and collections. I recommend to you John Richardson: At Home (published posthumously) and Love Affairs with Houses by Bunny Williams Above all, it is the storyteller who opens the door to new worlds. We invite you to visit us for exhibitions and auctions and for substantive conversations with our specialists about the broad spectrum of art forms, antiques, books, maps, coins and jewelry design at our New York gallery or digitally at Doyle.com and at HayloftAuctions.com. Our New York Specialists and our regional offices look forward to your calls.
Wishing you all a beautiful Spring! ON OUR COVER: Henry Moret (French, 1856-1913), Rochers de Penharn Baie de Douarnenez, Signed and dated 1911, Oil on canvas, 36 1/2 x 28 3/4 inches. Property of the Gertrude D. Davis Trust (est. $75,000-125,000). Impressionist & Modern Art / May 14 (see page 3).
WINTER HIGHLIGHTS THE ESTATE OF LINDA LEE JOHNSON Collectors and fans of jewelry designed by Linda Lee Johnson (1944-2018) turned out for Doyle’s auction of Jewelry from the Estate of Linda Lee Johnson held on February 19 and 20. All 199 lots from the Estate sold, with a majority far surpassing their estimates. Highlights included a stylish gold ‘Linden Leaf’ cuff bangle enhanced with glittering diamonds that achieved $8,750, several times its estimate of $2,0003,000. The big surprise of the sale came from a series of group lots of amber beads that totaled a staggering $148,250. The market for amber has been soft for the past few years, yet the amber offerings in the auction attracted intense competition — is this the start of a new trend?
AFF0RDABLE ART 90% SOLD! Seasoned buyers and new collectors alike flocked to Doyle’s March auctions of the recently launched affordable art categories of Fine Modern Art and Fine Paintings. Both auctions surpassed their estimates with an impressive 90% of the lots sold. The Fine Modern Art auction featured The Model Before a Mirror by Paul Wonner (American, 1920-2008), which realized an exceptional $16,250, many times its estimate of $2,0003,000. Highlighting the Fine Paintings auction was Girl in a Landscape, a lovely 1963 mixed media and oil on silk by Le Thi Luu (1911-1988), that soared over its estimate of $4,000-6,000 to achieve $31,250. Born in Hanoi, Le Thi Luu emigrated to Paris in the 1930s to pursue her career as an artist. She was one of the pioneers of Vietnamese silk painting and is regarded as one of its masters. These new sale categories provide exciting opportunities to add to your existing collection or start a new one!
THE ESTATE OF ROXANNE WRUBLE LEVY ROSOMAN / APRIL 18 Doyle is honored to auction jewelry from the Estate of Roxanne Wruble Levy Rosoman (1937-2018). An American concert pianist, Ms. Rosoman was recognized early on as a child prodigy. She studied piano in New York at the Professional Children’s School and later at The Juilliard School of Music. In 1959, she married the prominent Wall Street investor and philanthropist, Leon Levy (1925-2003). She toured widely in Europe, performing and recording, while dividing her time between homes in Manhattan, East Hampton and Key West. Her second marriage was to the noted British painter Leonard Rosoman (1913-2012), OBE, RA. They shared a home in London’s Kensington district, which was the locus of a vibrant social life for the Anglo-American arts community. A generous philanthropist, Ms. Rosoman donated to a number of causes, including an endowed piano scholarship at Juilliard and the Yale Center for British Art. Jewelry from her collection features a group of stylish designs by Buccellati to be offered in the Important Jewelry sale on April 18.

BUCCELLATI APRIL 18
THE ESTATE OF A GENTLEMAN / SPRING 2019 Property from the Estate of a Gentleman comprises paintings, furniture and decorative arts from his elegant apartment on Park Avenue and his home in Southampton, to be offered in select sales. Featured in the auction of Post-War & Contemporary Art on May 14 is a large-scale work by Chilean-born artist Roberto Matta (1911-2002). In 1933, Matta moved to Paris where he met Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, René Magritte, Salvador Dalí, Le Corbusier and the poet and theorist André Breton, who encouraged him to join the Surrealist movement. During this period, Matta developed an art of diffused films of color, biomorphic forms, and bold lines. In 1938 he moved to the United States, where he began to work principally in oil on canvas while continuing to develop his expressive, semi-abstract works. The 50% Irrational in Matter from 1951 is a prime representation of Matta’s contribution to the Surrealist movement (est. $100,000-200,000). Also offered on May 14 are works by Magdalena Abakanowicz, James Brown, Grisha Bruskin, Richard Diebenkorn (see page 4), Hans Hartung, Franz Kline, Louise Nevelson and Herbert Zangs. Additional property will be offered with Rare Books (Apr 17), Prints & Multiples (Apr 30), Impressionist & Modern Art (May 14), and various other sales.
PROPERTY FROM A PARK AVENUE APARTMENT DESIGNED BY BUNNY WILLIAMS MAY 22
This beautiful collection was formed with interior designer Bunny Williams in 1988 when she established her eponymous firm, having just left Parish-Hadley. She traveled with the clients to England, where they purchased from London’s leading English furniture dealers, including Apter-Fredericks. The circa 1725 George II figured walnut double-dome bureau cabinet is a refined example of its type, with beautiful color and patina (est. $30,000-50,000). An Irish George II mahogany table, circa 1750, is decorated with a lion’s mask, one of the most characteristic features of 18th century Irish furniture design. The Irish architect Edward Lovett Pearce introduced English architect and designer William Kent’s plaster ‘tabernacle frame’ with lion mask to Irish architecture, which was then taken up in furniture design, especially to friezes of side tables. Here we see the interplay between architecture and the decorative arts, so skillfully employed by Irish makers (est. $20,000-30,000).

JEAN-BAPTISTE-CAMILLE COROT / MAY 14
PABLO PICASSO / APRIL 30
ART AT HOME
PRINTS & MULTIPLES
Pauline Caspers (act.1890-1912) is best known for her paintings of floral arrangements executed in Paris at the turn of the century. She was a member of the Société des Artistes Français, where she exhibited between 1890 and 1902. A lovely example of her work, Lilac and Peonies with Irises will be offered on April 10 (est. $1,000-1,500). The popular Doyle at Home auctions offer a wide range of artworks with moderate estimates.
Pablo Picasso’s (1881-1973) prodigious printmaking aptly illustrates the artist’s relentless pushing of artistic boundaries. He both elevated and revolutionized the linocut relief technique, using one “reductive” rather than multiple blocks, of which La Pique from 1959 is a fine example. Picasso developed a love of bullfights, attending them as a child in Spain, and they became a favorite theme in his art (est. $30,000-40,000).

IMPRESSIONIST & MODERN ART MAY 14
The landscapes of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (17961875) have been appreciated from the artist’s time to the present day for their harmonious integration of classical structure with subtle effects of light and color. In Le Soir dans la campagne au bord de l’eau, painted when the artist was nearly 80 years old, we see these qualities brought together in an expressive evocation of sunset over a country lake (est. $60,000-80,000).
Boris Anisfeld (1878–1973) produced haunting stage and costume designs for Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes. In 1917 he left Russia for the United States, where he continued his stage designs for the Metropolitan Opera. When he taught at the Art Institute of Chicago, beginning in the 1920s, Anisfeld and his family spent summers in New Mexico and Colorado, where this charming painting of children and their dog was certainly painted (est. $20,000-30,000).
Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966) was one of America’s finest and most prolific illustrators, with a successful career spanning over fifty years. Reproduced as the cover for the 1922 Christmas issue of Life magazine, this festive picture depicts three costumed servers presenting the beginnings of a holiday meal in gleaming silver dishes (est. $150,000-250,000).

JEAN-BERNARD RESTOUT / MAY 22
POST-WAR & CONTEMPORARY ART
OLD MASTER PAINTINGS
Created in Eureka, CA, several years before Martin Wong’s (1946-1999) arrival in New York, WACO Studio Loft is a prototypical rendering of Wong’s loft space. Its painted frame would be something often employed by him throughout his career. The dreamlike setting is indicative of the atmosphere in which Wong worked during his time in Eureka, which also carried through to his later, and far grittier, works depicting the rawness of the Lower East Side (est. $12,000-18,000).
Jean-Bernard Restout (1732-1797), one of a family of distinguished French painters, won the coveted Rome Prize to study in the Eternal City in 1755. After returning to Paris, he was agréé (“approved”) by the Royal Academy – the first step toward formal membership – with his submission of this painting, which celebrates the ancient Greek poet Anacreon, known for his lyrical evocations of love and conviviality (est. $40,000-70,000).

Many artists who emerged onto the American art scene at the time of Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Clyfford Still incorporated the Abstract Expressionist format into their own works. But a number of them, including Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1993), returned to a figurative style. For approximately two decades, Diebenkorn transitioned to an abstract style with a group of landscape derived compositions, the Ocean Park Series, of which this 1972 work on paper from the Estate of a Gentleman is a prime example (est. $100,000-200,000) (see page 1). The Ocean Park paintings, drawings and prints are the most widely celebrated of Diebenkorn’s career.

PHOTOGRAPHS
Brightly colored pumpkins by Yayoi Kusama (b. 1929) are whimsical, open-edition sculptures, which the artist regards as equally allegory and self-portraiture (est. pair $1,800-2,200). The DoyleNext online-only auctions offer originals and editions by established and emerging artists. Upcoming dates to be announced.
Lucas Samaras (b. 1936) participated in Allen Kaprow’s Happenings and came of age at the emergence of Pop, Minimalism and Performance Art, yet Samaras created a universe all his own. Working in a wide range of conventional and nonconventional media, Samaras is comfortable with drawing, painting, sculpting, photography and installation. His body of work most closely resembles Surrealism, but placing his work in a category would diminish his genius in solemnity (est. $2,000-3,000).
Francesco Scavullo’s (1921-2004) first retrospective portfolio, Song, published in 2004, contains ten selenium-toned gelatin silver prints of Mick Jagger, Janis Joplin, Debbie Harry, Pavarotti, Sting, Ravi Shankar, Bernadette Peters, Lena Horne, Cher and Diana Ross (est. $3,000-5,000).

DIAMONDS An Edwardian ring set with two dazzling blue diamonds highlights the Important Jewelry auction on April 18. Property from the Estate of Edythe Meyers, the circa 1915 ring was acquired in the 1930s by her father, John Delano Coventry, a prosperous immigrant from Scotland. The ring features a marquise-shaped Fancy Intense Blue diamond, approx. .92 carat, VS1 clarity, and a pear-shaped Fancy Vivid Blue diamond, approx. .86 carat, VS2 clarity (est. $200,000-300,000). In our California Jewelry auction of November 2018, Doyle auctioned a blue diamond of 1.52 carats, VS1 clarity, for a stunning $855,000. Blue diamonds are among the rarest and most valuable gems on earth. Classified mostly as type IIb diamonds, blue diamonds are colored by trace elements of Boron and form at depths far greater than most other diamonds.

An Edwardian diamond tiara from the Estate of Helen Hartley can be worn to a royal state dinner, then transformed into five brooches or an elegant necklace for less formal occasions (est. $30,000-50,000). Raymond Yard’s whimsical and rare Art Deco rabbit brooch is certain to keep any party lively (est. $25,000-35,000). A necklace of natural pearls has always set the standard for elegance and luxury, epitomized by this classic necklace of graduated pearls ranging from 10.08 to 4.53mm, from a Private Monarch Beach, California Collector (est. $50,000-70,000). Spring can be yours all year round with this antique butterfly brooch from the Collection of an Early California Pioneering Land and Cattle Family (est. $4,000-6,000).

DOYLE AT HOME®
APRIL 10 + SUMMER 2019 Discover one of New York’s most popular design resources – Doyle at Home! Featured in the April 10 auction are a Regency style Japanned and parcel-gilt bookcase from the Estate of Linda Lee Johnson, Louis Vuitton trunks from the Estate of Barbara Wainscott, and ceramic figures of leopards that decorated New York’s famed Jim McMullen’s from the Estate of a Gentleman (see page 1). Established 250 years ago by Frederick the Great, the Royal Porcelain Factory (K.P.M.) in Berlin is today still producing painted porcelain wares of exceptional quality and beauty. This late 19th century plaque depicts the biblical subject of Ruth harvesting grain (est. $3,000-5,000). Nikolai Lieberich (1828-1883) was an eminent Russian sculptor known mostly for his work as an animalier, ranging from small-scale sculptures of single animals, such as this bronze figure of a hunting dog (est. $2,000-3,000) to large and complex compositions.
ENGLISH & CONTINENTAL FURNITURE & DECORATIVE ARTS MAY 22
Silver from a New Jersey Estate offers a group of English silver with rare examples among the earliest of their form. A Provincial chocolate pot made in Chester in 1703 and a William III silver monteith from 1701 are inspired by Chinese porcelain (est. each $15,000-25,000). The 1709 Queen Anne kettle on stand by royal silversmith Benjamin Pyne is uniquely English, designed for the elaborate ritual of English tea – a tradition imported from Asia (est. $6,000-8,000). From an apartment decorated by Bunny Williams is an elegant Regency desk armchair derived from a French design for a fauteuil de toilette by Parisian menuisier, Georges Jacob. Mahogany furniture became fashionable in France during the second half of the 18th century and was often described as being in le style Anglais. Thus, this early 19th century English chair is inspired by a Parisian chair influenced by English taste (est. $7,000-10,000) (see page 1). A George II mirror reflects the burgeoning taste for Rococo design, a French style of the 1740s that embraced naturalistic and fanciful motifs adopted by the English as a reaction to the earlier, more rigid, classicism. Design elements on the frame include water cascades, icicles, leafy branches and flowerheads, used asymmetrically on a classical framework (est. $8,000-12,000).

Louis Comfort Tiffany is rightfully regarded as one of America’s most important and successful proponents of the Art Nouveau era. Nature at her zenith was masterfully captured by Tiffany’s designers, craftsmen and craftswomen, as seen in a bronze and gold Favrile Glass Ten-Light Pond Lily lamp from the Estate of Marian Clark Adolphson (est. $8,000-12,000). Danish designer Hans Wegner revolutionized seating furniture with designs such as the teak lounge chair Model AP 27 from 1954. The elegant lines of this chair from the Estate of Hilda U. and Rudolph Forchheimer are at once stylish and inviting (est. $1,000-1,500). Among the Italian designers of the 1960s, none made a bigger splash than Piero Fornasetti. This Leopard chest of drawers combines his whimsical sensibility with functional design. The surface decoration transforms the ordinary into the unexpected. His work is as fresh today as it was half a century ago (est. $15,000-20,000).

HISTORY AT RARE BOOKS, AUTOGRAPHS & MAPS APRIL 17
Original published manuscripts by Ernest Hemingway are exceptionally rare in private ownership. Certain to attract attention are three hand-written drafts for the epilogue of his bullfighting epic, The Dangerous Summer, which chronicled the mano a manos between Spain’s top matadors in the summer of 1959 and was serialized in Life magazine in 1960. This epilogue is considered the final work published in Hemingway’s lifetime (est. $30,000-60,000). Penned by George Washington within the first six months of his Presidency, this letter from October 1789 consigned by a Palm Beach Collector regards a gift of fruit trees given to Washington from the greenhouse at the Mount Clara estate near Baltimore. Here Washington attempts to avoid the great expense of moving mature trees to Mount Vernon clarifying his request for “infant growth” (est. $25,000-35,000).

The property of a Maine Collector features Moses Greenleaf’s monumental Map of the State of Maine with the Province of New Brunswick, published in Portland in 1829. Praised for its accuracy in charting the thousands of lakes and rivers throughout Maine, it also illustrated the lingering border dispute with Great Britain, despite Maine having entered the Union in 1820 (est. $4,000-6,000). Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility anonymously issued as “By a Lady” in 1811, was her first published novel. Presented as a triple-decker in an edition of about a thousand copies, the three volumes offered are in olive drab half calf. From the Estate of Frances “Peggy” Brooks, it is a sound set, and quite scarce in a period binding (est. $30,000-40,000).
DOYLE COINS, BANK NOTES & POSTAGE STAMPS APRIL 30
A set of five commemorative coins were issued for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, which celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal on August 15, 1914, as well as the revival of the Bay Area following the 1906 earthquake and fire. This rare complete set has been graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation with an astounding grade of Mint State 65 for the $50 round and the high grade of Mint State 63 for the $50 Octagonal. The $2½ is graded MS 66+, and the $1 and 50 Cents are both MS 62 (est. $190,000-210,000). Assembled in the 1940s through the 1970s, the Collection of a Prominent New York Numismatist focuses on European gold and silver rarities spanning the late 18th through early 20th centuries. Highlights include Austria Franz Joseph 100 Corona Proof of 1908 (est. $10,000-15,000), Bulgaria 4 Ducats of 1914, Germany-Hanover 10 Thaler of 1825, German East Africa 15 Rupees of 1916, Hungary 100 Korona of 1917 and Yugoslavia 4 Ducats of 193. Also featured are silver issues and high-grade Morgan dollars. The philatelic section offers several solid European and United States collections, including an 1869 Thirty Cent Flags Inverted Proof, Very Fine (est. $700-900).

The sale will offer Outsider and Folk Art, circus and sideshow ephemera, taxidermy and other unusual objects. COLLECTING SILVER with TODD SELL TUESDAY, MAY 7 at 6:30PM
JUDY RIFKA TUESDAY, APRIL 30, 6:30PM Judy Rifka will discuss her diverse body of work, including painting, printmaking, video art and sculpture. Featured in two Whitney Biennials, and published in Artforum, Art in America and The New Yorker, Rifka’s genre-defying work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Carnegie Mellon University; Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; and the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York.
Silver Specialist Todd Sell will trace the history of silver manufacture, from the London silversmiths of the Georgian era such as Paul Storr and Paul de Lamerie, through the exuberance of 19th century American silver by Samuel Kirk and Tiffany & Co. and the sleek 20th century designs of Buccellati and Georg Jensen. He will discuss current trends in collecting and provide insights into building and maintaining your own silver collection.
