“ A gem worthy of special distinction” Highlighting the Important Jewelry auction on December 13 was a rare and important Colombian emerald of approx. 11.12 carats described by the AGL (American Gemological Laboratories) as “a gem worthy of special distinction.” Property from the Estate of a Distinguished Collector, this exceptional emerald attracted an international audience of bidders who sent the stone soaring

over its estimate of $200,000-300,000 to achieve a stunning $705,000. The international jewelry market has experienced growing demand for quality colored gemstones over the past few seasons. These include the finest examples of Burma rubies, Kashmir sapphires and Colombian emeralds. Quality emeralds in particular have performed especially well over the past year, as international demand increases for the finest stones possessing a superior degree of transparency and a richly saturated color. Ansel Adams (1902-1984) was the preeminent 20th century photographer of the American landscape. In an unprecedented offering, Doyle’s Photographs auction on December 14 featured a rare Ansel Adams Complete Museum Set that achieved $1.2 million. Spanning

Adams’ entire career, the Set of seventy-five images included all of the artist’s best-known work, including the majestic five image Surf Sequence. The Museum Set was acquired by a private collector from Adams in 1981 and was donated in 2012 to The College of New Rochelle, on whose behalf the Set was auctioned. The sale marked the first time an Ansel Adams Museum Set was auctioned with the permission of The Ansel Adams Gallery and the artist’s grandson, Matthew Adams.

Furniture highlights include a handsome pair of George II walnut armchairs that once formed part of a larger suite at Wimpole Hall in Cambridgeshire, England. FURNITURE & DECORATIVE ARTS THE ESTATE OF NOEL & HARRIETTE LEVINE / JANUARY 17 The first known example of similar Chinese export polychrome-decorated clay nodding head figures appears in a European 1777 inventory, where they are described as â&#x20AC;&#x153;china dolls.â&#x20AC;? They illustrate the incredible fascination that Europeans had for Chinese objects and helped to educate them about Chinese life and society (est. $40,000-60,000).

Wall lights of this unusually large size are rare. Almost 5 feet tall, these George III examples are in the manner of the pre-eminent London glass-making firm Parker and Perry, who supplied lighting fixtures to, among others, the Prince Regent at Carlton House and the Duke of Devonshire at Chatsworth (est. $60,000-80,000). This library table was created in 1829 by the noted cabinet-making firm Gillows of Lancaster for the bibliophile Beriah Botfield. The design for it appears in the Gillows Estimate Sketch Book for 1825-30 and was probably ordered for his newly created library at Norton Hall, Northamptonshire (est. $30,000-50,000).

RUSSIAN WORKS OF ART / JANUARY 31 Highlighting the sale is property from the Collection of Russian Grand Duke George Mikhailovich (1863-1919), grandson of Russian Emperor Nicholas I (1796-1855) and his wife Princess Marie Georgievna (1876-1940), daughter of George I, King of the Hellenes (1845-1913). The Collection features more than thirty lots of Fabergé, silver, icons and family heirlooms with close connections to the Russian Imperial family in the waning years of the Russian Empire. A jeweled icon depicting the Mother of God, Christ, and John the Baptist is closely related to one produced for Russian Empress Alexandra Feodorovna (est. $7,000-10,000). An icon of similar design from the Collection was bequeathed by the Grand Duke’s daughter, Princess Xenia, to Middlebury College Museum of Art in Vermont.

ENGLISH & CONTINENTAL FURNITURE & DECORATIVE ARTS / JANUARY 31 Reflecting the abiding English taste for Neoclassicism, this late 18th century satinwood secrétaire bookcase cabinet is decorated with painted oval panels of mythological subjects after the Swiss artist Angelika Kauffmann (1741-1807). It was included in a loan exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (est. $5,000-7,000).

DOYLE + DESIGN® / JUNE 6 This fanciful chair by noted Italian designer Carlo Bugatti (1856-1940) draws inspiration from Moorish and Japanese design that was so popular in Europe at the turn of the 20th century. Carlo, son of decorator Giovanni Luigi Bugatti and father of sculptor Rembrandt Bugatti and automobile manufacturer Ettore Bugatti, has taken an everyday form and reimagined it as an exotic piece of sculpture (est. $8,000-12,000).

AMERICAN FURNITURE & DECORATIVE ARTS / APRIL 18 From the Estate of Eleanor Johnson is a three-piece coffee set, circa 1850, by Garner & Winchester of Lexington, Kentucky. Due to strife and economic hardship during the last half of the 19th century, silver from the antebellum South is rare, and rarer still is the fact that this silver has descended through seven generations of the same family for which it was made. The coffee service is an unusual form and size, and the thistle finial recalls the family’s Scottish heritage (est. $5,000-7,000). June 6

Produced in Fabergé’s Moscow workshops, this silver samovar is applied with the coat of arms of the Berdyaev family, an important aristocratic military and literary family in Imperial Russia. The family produced a long line of high-ranking military officers and the important political and religious philosopher Nikolai Alexandrovich Berdyaev (est. $35,000-55,000).

CALIFORNIA JEWELRY / MAY 14 Reflecting the elegance of the Belle Époque is this exquisite lapel pendant-watch elaborately decorated with enamel and diamonds (est. $2,500-3,500). A pair of antique pendant earrings of silver and gold set with turquoise and diamonds date to the mid-19th century (est. $1,8002,200). An early 20th century bracelet of rubies, diamonds and pearls embodies Art Deco style with its geometric design (est. $2,000-3,000).

Inspired by Chinese and Japanese stone carvings, the Russian jewelry firm of Fabergé produced miniature sculptures of animals in a range of hardstones. These diminutive treasures proved tremendously popular with the firm’s clientele and remain so today. In 1907, British monarchs King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra famously commissioned Fabergé to create carvings of the various animals on their country estate at Sandringham. This commission resulted in the most important and comprehensive collection of Fabergé hardstone animals, and remains to this day in the Royal Collection. Property from a Virginia Private Collection offers two precious carvings by Fabergé – a model of a goose (est. $18,00025,000) and a duckling that is nearly identical to one in the Royal Collection from the original Sandringham Commission (est. $15,000-25,000).

ASIAN WORKS OF ART / MARCH 19 Some of the finest ceramics of the Song dynasty were made at Jingdezhen in north Jiangxi Province. Among these are the thinly potted vessels of fine stoneware with a very attractive translucent glaze of light blue, often referred to as qingbai or (â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;bluish-whiteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;) ware. The decoration of qingbai wares is characterized by quickly incised designs, with combs used to add detail or to structure the background. This lobed dish has a distinguished provenance, having been exhibited at the Oriental Ceramic Society in London, as well as at Eskenazi Ltd., London (est. $6,000-8,000). During the Ming and Qing dynasties, vases of this form were prized, because the double gourd, or hulu, was widely viewed as auspicious. Double gourd vases are also known as dajiping (vase of good fortune). This vase is remarkable for its exquisite luminous glaze, which accentuates the graceful curves of its profile (est. $12,000-18,000).

Jacques Vaillant (1643-1691) was a highly regarded portraitist in Amsterdam, the Hague, and at several European courts. The aristocratic boy in this portrait is dressed for a wild-boar hunt, the most dangerous form of the chase. His elegant, Roman-style sandals and the antique statuette behind him suggest that he comes from an ancient family. The work was formerly in the collection of the noted collector and philanthropist Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. It was purchased in 1975 by a private collector in Alexandria, Virginia, in whose family it has descended (est. $8,000-12,000).

The daughter of a Quaker family with roots in the Shenandoah Valley, Mary Elizabeth Price (1877-1965) is best known for her highly decorative paintings of floral panels, often with metal leaf backgrounds. After attending the Friends Central School and the Philadelphia School of the Industrial Arts, Price studied still life painting and drawing at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where her works were exhibited for more than twenty years. For much of her adult life, Price lived in a cottage on the banks of the Delaware River and was an active member of the vibrant artists community in Bucks County that also included Daniel Garber and John Folinsbee. These two works depicting peonies, poppies, hollyhocks and delphiniums are exceptional examples, apparently conceived as a diptych (est. $60,000100,000). 7

A relatively self-taught artist from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Orville Bulman (American, 1904-1978) defied his family’s wishes and devoted himself to art rather than taking over the family business. During an extended stay in Haiti, Bulman was so inspired by the people and culture of the island nation that they were to become his muse. He settled in Palm Beach and continued to paint his brightly hued canvases, full of life, whimsy and the magic of Haiti. The artist’s love for that nation is celebrated in this playful work of fantasy, Fast Express, from 1973 (est. $6,000-8,000).

A 1946 visit to Georges and Suzanne Ramié’s Madoura pottery factory in the South of France made a huge impression on Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). Soon after, he became immersed in pottery making there, creating more than 3,000 works over the next 25 years. Visage, a ceramic pitcher from 1955, is a fine example of Picasso’s exploration of the female face, one of his favorite subjects (est. $5,000-7,000).

Published in 1959 by Pierre Matisse with text by André Breton, Joan Miró’s Constellations portfolio includes one signed color lithograph and 22 color pochoir reproductions after gouaches painted by the artist in 1940-41. Miró completed ten of the gouaches in France before fleeing with his family to Spain ahead of the German invasion. He employed his signature vibrant primary colors and interlacing black lines with playful stars, eyes, ellipses and crescent moons to depict a private universe far removed from the terror of the War (est. $50,00070,000). Both of these works are from the Estate of Marion Victor Perini, the daughter of prominent art collectors Cecile and I.A. Victor of Dallas, Texas.

Hans Hofmann (1880-1966) was a leading figure in shaping modernist art concepts both as teacher and painter. Born in Germany, Hofmann studied in Paris, began his career in Munich, then crossed the Atlantic and taught in California and finally, New York. His role as a teacher had perhaps more influence than any other on the generation of Abstract Expressionist painters. This untitled work from 1945, created in the United States, foretells of the artist’s expressive painterly style to come (est. $20,000-30,000).

While still a teenager, Jean Dufy (French, 1888-1964) was inspired to become an artist by an exhibition of Fauve paintings in his home town of Le Havre. After his service in World War I, he moved to Paris, where he befriended a number of painters working in Montmartre. This handsome still life, with its careful arrangement of fruit, porcelain and flowers on a Persian carpet, shows the powerful influence of Paul Cezanne. Also by Jean Dufy is a delightful view of a busy port teeming with sailboats and a domed lighthouse in the background. Born in the Norman seaport of Le Havre, Dufy particularly loved the sea, sailboats and harbors, and this work is a classic example of one of his favorite themes (est. each $20,000-30,000).

Norman Bluhm (American, 1921-1999) was born in Chicago and moved to New York at a turning point in American art, when great minds from the United States and Europe converged on New York City and began shaping the Abstract Expressionist movement. Bluhm’s broad, rapidly applied brushstrokes align him with the wing of Abstract Expressionist art known as Action Painting. This 1959 work fully illustrates the expressive style for which Bluhm is best known (est. $12,000-18,000).

DOYLE + DESIGN® / JUNE 6 Created just a few years before his untimely passing at age 45, Stephen Edlich’s (1944-1989) Untitled 5 Fuque VII from 1980 is representative of his large-scale collages that reflect on Cubism and Constructivism. Employing his favored materials, twine and found paper, Edlich creates an image that evokes the geometric abstraction of Rodchenko and Malevich (est. $6,000-8,000).

Doyle is honored to auction the library of rare books, manuscripts and photographs from the Estate of Arnold “Jake” Johnson (1930-2017) of Bozeman, Montana. A true bibliophile, Johnson was an inveterate collector of rare items related to travel, expeditions in India and Africa, English sporting and color-plate, 19th century big game hunting, and Western Americana. To be offered in a series of sales, the Collection comprises hundreds of rare books, hand-written accounts of hunting expeditions, striking examples of 19th century photographic travel albums, and elusive bibliographies and facsimiles of major works. Robert Colebrook’s Twelve views of places in the Kingdom of Mysore, the country of Tippoo sultan, from drawings taken on the spot... is the first edition, first issue, dated 1793, with the fine aquatints by J. W. Edy after Colebrook’s drawings. Taken during a journey in 1790, he had been appointed Surveyor General of Bengal, a position he held from 1788 to 1794. It is one of the first grand plate books of Indian views (est. $2,000-3,000). This watercolor drawing of Axim, from the Steamer’s Anchorage was reproduced as the frontispiece to the second volume of Burton and Cameron’s To the Gold Coast for Gold. A Personal Narrative. It is annotated in Burton’s hand, and is framed with the original mount

inscribed by James Irvine, to whom the work was dedicated (est. $1,500-2,500). Sir Charles D’Oyly was a gentleman artist, and a student of George Chinnery, who worked in India between 1802-1825. He started the Behar Amateur Lithographic Press to reproduce his drawings, those of Chinnery, and of his friends. The present collection consists of two albums after D’Oyly and others, with a total of 36 lithographs mounted to 34 sheets, all produced at the Press between 1828 and 1831 (est. $2,000-3,000). The great English sporting artist Henry Alken produced many fine series of plates. His Fox Hunting, a series of four delicately hand-colored plates printed in sepia, etched by Clark and Dubourg is distinctly rare, with only one copy at auction since the 1970s (est. $800-1,200). James Pollard’s series of coaching prints, published London: 1819-1823, includes four handsome plates of coaching scenes, including the Brighton-London Comet while underway, and two plates showing the vicissitudes and pleasures of such travel (est. $2,500-3,500). W. Ellerton Fry’s photographic album of the Occupation of Mashonoland was self-published in London in about 1891. Containing 154 carbon prints, this rare set chronicles the march of the Pioneer Column in current Botswana and Zimbabwe. Fry’s photographs are an extraordinary record of both the region and British colonialism (est. $3,000-5,000).

COINS, BANK NOTES & POSTAGE STAMPS / MAY 1 Silver Dollars were the linchpin of American Trade during the late 1800s. Known as the Commercial Dollar of 1873-1885, these dollars were developed as a means to encourage interest in International trade and to promote the use of U.S. silver. The legal tender status of Trade Dollars was revoked by Congress in 1887. This is a Very Fine example of the scarce 1878 Carson City Trade dollar (est. $4,000-6,000). Morgan Dollars were introduced in 1878 and minted until 1921 in Philadelphia, San Francisco and Carson City, this 1879 CC being the scarcest date (est. $3,000-4,000).

Eugene M. Lang is best remembered for his 1981 sixth grade commencement address in which he promised to pay the studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; college tuition, a gesture which led to the establishment of the I Have a Dream Foundation. The Estate of Eugene M. Lang offers several groups of Hi-Grade Morgan Dollars (est. range $1,000-5,000). Among the Postage Stamps are full sheets of the United States 1918 Air Mail issue including the 24 cent C3 with auction estimates of $2,500 to $4,000.
