W E L C O M E F RO M T H E M AYO R As Durham’s mayor, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Durham Performing Arts Center as this nationally-renowned venue continues its twelfth season. My wife and I have been season ticket holders in DPAC’s Broadway series since it opened in 2008, and like DPAC’s more than 4.7 million guests, I continue to marvel at the caliber of performances showcased in our great city. Each year just gets better and better. For example, over 520,000 visitors walked the red carpet last year to attend award-winning musicals, such as Disney’s Aladdin, Dear Evan Hansen, and CATS, as well as sold-out concerts including Widespread Panic, Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band, and Gladys Knight. That’s not all. While providing entertainment that families can enjoy together is a top priority for DPAC, finding ways to involve those who may not otherwise enjoy all that the arts have to offer has become a special passion for this theater. Last year, DPAC implemented “DPAC for All,” a program that offers discounted tickets exclusively for Durham residents. No doubt, the arts contribute to Durham’s sense of community.Your attendance enables DPAC to support other nonprofit arts groups, such as the Durham Arts Council and the Hayti Heritage Center. DPAC also cultivates the arts in education by arranging visits from touring cast members to local schools through Heart of the Arts, and not to mention donating hundreds of tickets each year to schools and local charities to use for auctions and fundraising. DPAC is constantly working to ensure that the arts touch many areas of Durham and, indeed, the entire Triangle community. A visit to DPAC is an open invitation to experience Durham—from great awardwinning restaurants to shopping and culture. It’s as easy as parking and either walking, biking or taking the bus to downtown eateries, or taking a short drive to nearby malls, museums or historical sites. You should know that both Durham and DPAC have strong track records: The City recently celebrated 150 years of serving our growing, diverse population, while in November DPAC marked over a decade of showcasing award-winning entertainment. Thank you being a part of our history, present and future just by choosing DPAC and Durham. Now settle into your seats to enjoy your DPAC experience and an unforgettable show! Sincerely,
Mayor Steve Schewel

WELCOME FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Welcome to DPAC! 2019 was a record-breaking year for us with 522,515 guests attending 239 events, the highest attendance for a calendar year since the center’s opening in 2008. With these new attendance figures, DPAC continues to be ranked among the top-five theaters in America by three leading national magazines that cover live entertainment events and venues. Operated under the direction of Nederlander and Professional Facilities Management (PFM), DPAC has welcomed more than 4.7 million guests to 2,200+ Broadway, concert, comedy and special events at DPAC since opening. None of this would be possible without you, our valued guests who are so supportive of the great variety of events that grace our stage. In addition to entertaining our many guests each year, DPAC also generates substantial economic impact by attracting thousands of guests to Durham from throughout the surrounding region and across the U.S. In our eleventh season, DPAC’s total economic impact was over $127 million, with visitors to DPAC contributing significantly to Durham’s continued renaissance and vitality. We love playing a role in helping to bring so many new visitors to Durham, to not only discover the great shows at DPAC that we host, but also to see all that Durham has to offer. Though it’s our top-five rankings that generate the headlines, what we’re proudest of is our guest experience. My greatest reward is seeing the smiles of our guests and hearing from the thousands each year that give us such great reviews and share so many nice compliments about our shows, our event staff and the overall guest experience of attending an event at DPAC. Before the performance begins, I invite you to review DPAC’s Guiding Principles which appear in this program on page 20. These principles guide everything we do. Thank you for your support and thank you for being here for this wonderful event. It’s my hope that this experience creates a brilliant new memory that lasts a lifetime. Sincerely,
Bob Klaus General Manager

PROFESSIONAL FACILITIES MANAGEMENT, INC. (PFM) PFM is a wholly-owned for-profit subsidiary of Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC), incorporated in 1988 in response to a growing need for objective evaluation and management of small-to-medium-sized performing arts facilities in geographically-diverse locations. One of the first companies of its kind, PFM’s business is focused on what we know and do best – performing arts “product.” PFM was founded by a group of dedicated business and entertainment industry professionals who had been invited to consult and advise on a number of venue related projects in New England. They saw a need for a company that could act quickly, responsively, and decisively to both public and private facility management needs, programming needs, marketing support, and fiduciary responsibilities. Their corporate mission – to bring a wide variety of programming to the broadest audience while maintaining financial responsibility and sensitivity to local constituency needs – has guided PFM to past successes and promises future growth. PFM is governed by a Board of Directors who contribute successful business experience, entrepreneurial spirit, and a bottom-line focus. Presently, PFM holds management/booking contracts in thirteen facilities located in nine states.

Don’t purchase tickets from Internet scalpers! At DPAC, we’re tired of seeing unauthorized ticket brokers take advantage of DPAC ticket buyers. Don’t be fooled by online websites who mimic DPAC’s name or website and offer tickets they might not even have. You will always pay more, will rarely get the seats they advertise, and you may even receive counterfeit tickets.
•
Go directly to DPACnc.com or to Ticketmaster.com; type it in yourself, rather than using an online search. These are the only OFFICIAL ONLINE TICKETING PROVIDERS for events at DPAC.
•
If you do use a search engine, look for the official DPAC website www.DPACnc.com. Only our authentic venue site is allowed to be labeled as “official.”
•
“Speculative Listing” is when unofficial sellers list tickets for sale even though they do not actually have those tickets. They are betting they can trick you into buying tickets, often in seat locations you may not really want and at a price much higher than what others are paying for the same seats. For more information about speculative ticketing, visit this warning from Ticketmaster: https://insider.ticketmaster.com/spec-ticketing/
Avoid unsecured purchases from fraudulent and misleading online ticket brokers. Don’t overpay for your tickets. For the best prices and best selection, always go directly to DPACnc.com or Ticketmaster.com and BUY DIRECT!

T R I A N G L E R I S I N G S TA R S CELEBRATING THE BEST OF HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATRE IN OUR REGION
DPAC is proud to present the 10th anniversary of Triangle Rising Stars, the regional qualifying event for The National High School Musical Theatre Awards™ (NHSMTA) on May 28, 2020. NHSMTA is a national competition that celebrates outstanding student performances in high school musical productions across the United States.Triangle Rising Stars is a program designed to celebrate outstanding achievement in high school musical theater, by focusing attention on the meaningful work being done both on and off stage by dedicated teachers and students. Triangle Rising Stars brings together high school musical theater students from Durham, the Triangle and the surrounding region to perform and compete for a chance to represent DPAC in the national finals in New York City each summer. A team of judges from DPAC, Duke University, ABC 11, Carolina Theatre and other arts and performance professionals attend area high school musical productions throughout the school year. Twenty finalists are then selected to rehearse and compete with the best of their peers, culminating in a live performance at the Triangle Rising Stars Showcase and Awards show at DPAC each May. This May, seven awards will be presented during the live ceremony: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Dancer, Best Singer, Best Ensemble, Triangle Shining Star (congeniality award), and Best Musical. The students awarded Best Actress and Best Actor each receive $2,000 academic scholarships and are invited on an all-expenses-paid trip to the NHSMTA program in New York City in June at Nederlander’s Minskoff Theatre, home for Disney’s The Lion King.
46
About NHSMTA – The National High School Musical Theatre Awards™ (NHSMTA) was established in 2009 to elevate the importance of theatre arts education in schools and reward excellence in student performance. The program impacts over 50,000 students annually who participate in high school musical theatre competitions sponsored by thirty professional theatres throughout the US. Also known as The Jimmy® Awards, named for Broadway impresario James M. Nederlander, this yearround program is administered by The Broadway League Foundation Inc.
Please visit DPACnc.com/TRS for more information on Triangle Rising Stars. More information on NHSMTA and The Jimmy Awards can be found at jimmyawards.com.

GUEST ETIQUETTE At DPAC, we’re committed to Guest Courtesy. Please remember to be a good neighbor to those seated around you. AFTER THE PERFORMANCE
Yes, the lobby gets busy and the parking lots can be tricky, but please remain at your seats until the houselights come up. As a courtesy to the performers and other audience members, DPAC asks that you do not rush for the exits prematurely at the end of the performance.
CAMERAS, PHOTOGRAPHY, & VIDEO RECORDING
Photography and video recording is prohibited by all Broadway events that DPAC hosts. All electronic devices (cell phones, smartphones, tablets, digital cameras) must be turned off before the start of the show. The light from phones is distracting to others throughout the seating area. Cameras with a detachable lens are never allowed at DPAC, and for most shows, no cameras of any kind are allowed including small pointand-shoot cameras
ENTERING AND EXITING THE SEATING AREA
Please time your exit and re-entry to the seating area to occur only at intermission or breaks between songs. This is a courtesy to other guests around you who will appreciate you keeping these disruptions to a minimum.
KIDS AT DPAC
Please note that all guests require a ticket, regardless of age. Children under the age of 6 are not allowed at most DPAC performances including Broadway, Concerts and Comedy shows. For some shows DPAC will make recommendations on the appropriate minumum age based on the content and the length of the event. Parental discretion is always advised and judgment of the appropriateness of the content for each show should be made on an individual basis prior to purchase. Children must be able to sit quietly in their own seat without disturbing other guests. As a further courtesy to our guests, DPAC recommends one parent or chaperone for every one child in attendance.
IT CAN WAIT.
Please save texting until AFTER the show. The light from phones is distracting to others throughout the theater. Please keep them turned off.
IT’S SUPERSTAR ENTERTAINMENT, NOT A FOOD FEST

D I S C OV E R B ROA DWAY Donate your tickets and give area students the chance to experience their first Broadway show ever!
DPAC’s Discover Broadway offers SunTrust Broadway members a way to donate their tickets so their valuable seats do not go unused.
During the 2018 / 2019 season, DPAC saw a 60% growth in Discover Broadway donations. Thanks to the generosity of DPAC’s Season Seat Members, over 200 seats were donated to deserving individuals including students from Durham Public Schools and Partners for Youth Opportunity plus seniors living in Durham public housing. For many, these seats provided opportunities to experience their first Broadway show ever. For the 2019 / 2020 season, DPAC’s Discover Broadway will be partnering with Durham Public Schools and North Carolina Central University to reach students in the performing arts who would otherwise be unable to attend a hit Broadway show at DPAC. By generously donating tickets you cannot use, Durham students will receive the chance to experience the magic of a hit Broadway show. These donated tickets provide the opportunity of a lifetime.
It’s easy to help: • If you know in advance that you cannot attend a show, or even if one member of your party will not be joining you, simply contact DPAC at :
DiscoverBroadway@dpacnc.com
• You will receive an acknowledgment from DPAC that your unused tickets will be reprinted for donation to an area student. • You, then, discard your original tickets and DPAC will handle all other details. * Please note: ticket donations must be made at least 72 hours prior to your scheduled performance date.

D PAC A M B A S S A D O R S In 2019, DPAC launched its second year of Performing Arts Ambassadors, a program for high school students offering a behind-the-scenes look at the live entertainment and performing arts industry. 24 students were selected from over 100 applicants, and each is able to see the diversity offered by DPAC and acquire a behind-the-scenes look at the events presented by one of the top-five theaters in America. These up-close experiences not only help students realize the importance of the arts, but also allow them first-hand experiences that may assist them one-day if they choose a career path in performing arts management. And just as important, DPAC’s Performing Arts Ambassadors are able to share their insights and experiences with other teens throughout the region via social media. High school-aged students are encouraged to apply at the start of each school year for the upcoming season. Ambassadors volunteer in a variety of roles at events, shadow key staff members, attend DPAC events, and report about their experiences via a blog and other social media channels throughout the school year. Follow DPAC’s Performing Arts Ambassadors as they experience the 2019 / 2020 season by visiting www.DPACnc.com/performing-arts-ambassador-blog.

An Authentic Theater Experience
A Week-long Theater Intensive Taught by Broadway Professionals! July 27-31, 2020 at DPAC
Limited to 100 participants only ages 10-17
Next Stop Broadway® is a week-long performing arts program consisting of classes, workshops, and rehearsals focused on classic Broadway shows. In addition to dance and vocal training, the program includes a mid-week “edu-tainment” segment, highlighted with film clips of Broadway shows. The week culminates with an “Opening Night” performance for family and friends on Friday afternoon followed by a cast party! Paid registrations are limited to 80 participants ages 10-17 and are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Twenty additional scholarships will be awarded to participants with financial need and interest in the performing arts. No theater experience needed.

H E A RT O F T H E A RT S Community Engagement — Sharing the Magic of Live Entertainment Since 2008, DPAC’s community outreach programs have been making connections between the shows DPAC presents and local students and non-profit arts organizations. Each season, DPAC coordinates educational workshops led by touring Broadway cast and crew members for Durham students interested in the performing arts. Students and their teachers have told us that DPAC’s educational outreach events are among their school year’s highlights. The chance to interact with Broadway theater professionals is inspiring; they provide real-world insights and offer students a oncein-a-lifetime experience. DPAC For All, a program started in 2018, offers reserved select balcony seating for $20 (plus taxes) per ticket exclusively for residents of Durham for most Broadway shows. This program provides an opportunity for many to experience their first-ever Broadway musical at a savings of 20% to 75%. Residents can purchase these specially discounted tickets in-person at the Blue Cross of NC - Ticket Center at DPAC. New this year, is DPAC’s Inclusion Project. The objective is to provide a DPAC VIP experience to the most deserving community members, those who make a difference for others in everyday life here in the Triangle. It’s our hope that recipients, many of whom might be first-time DPAC guests, have the opportunity to enjoy the magic of live entertainment at DPAC, as a small reward for their service in our communities. Want to nominate someone? Visit DPACnc.com/community/dpac-inclusion-project for more information.
