The challenges facing today’s retirees are unique. Higher inflation, sky-rocketing healthcare costs, longer life expectancies, and complex Social Security rules all make much of the conventional retirement wisdom of the past obsolete. In this new era, it’s crucial that you take a fresh look at the challenges ahead and create a comprehensive plan to address them.

For 30 years, we’ve been working with people like you to address the challenges of the transition from accumulating their nest egg to using it to support their retirement lifestyle. Get in touch today to schedule a complimentary consultation

Welcome from Blue Cross NC

As a proud sponsor of this exciting season at DPAC, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) is honored and delighted to welcome you to this performance!

Blue Cross NC is a mission-driven, not-for-pro t guided by our purpose to improve the health and well-being of our customers…and our communities. This commitment reaches deep into all 100 counties across the state. You might be wondering how our support of the arts relates to our work to make health care better for all.

Well, the answer is simple: The arts enrich our lives beyond measure, and not just by entertaining us. Research shows that they improve mental and physical health. Whether we are practicing, performing, producing, doodling or just enjoying as a member of the audience, experiencing art delivers authentic physiological and emotional bene ts. In many ways, the arts strengthen our community and act as a cornerstone of the populations we serve.

We value our ongoing partnership with DPAC, and sponsoring the Blue Cross NC – Ticket Center and DPAC’s Heart of the Arts Community Education and Engagement Programs aligns with our consumer-focused vision. Having spent over 90 years in this community, we look forward to many more. We’re here to help. Learn more at BlueCrossNC.com.

Thanks for being here. Sit back, relax and enjoy the show!

On behalf of the City of Durham, I would like to welcome you to DPAC! Like so many Durham residents, I recognize the jewel that DPAC is to Durham and the Triangle region.

I’m thrilled to say that DPAC, after more than a decade, continues to showcase the energy, passion and great entertainment with a list of performances that people will travel from miles around to see.

This season will feature some of Broadway’s biggest hits, concerts, comedy shows and special events to ever take the DPAC stage. I’m also excited to see so many DPAC fan-favorites and rst-time performers take the stage throughout the upcoming season.

And as usual, all the special touches that come with seeing a Broadway show or concert at DPAC still await you, starting with the beauty of the theater and DPAC’s legendary customer service. A visit to DPAC is an open invitation to experience Durham. It’s as easy as parking and walking to downtown restaurants, or taking a short drive to nearby malls, museums, or historical sites.

As your Mayor, I’m so excited that one of my duties is to o cially welcome you to one of the greatest theaters in the world! But don’t take my word; last year DPAC was ranked in the top ve in the country by national theater reviewers and magazines, including VenuesNow and Pollstar. Thank you for choosing DPAC and Durham. Now settle into your seats to enjoy your DPAC experience and an unforgettable show. 

In Service and Gratitude,

Welcome to DPAC!

This is our 16th season of presenting events at DPAC, and we’re so glad you are here. The magic and connection of live entertainment are undeniable, and we hope this performance will be among your best entertainment experiences ever.

In addition to the fantastic talent that lights up the stage at DPAC, there are hundreds of incredibly hard-working people who help make each and every performance possible.

When you arrived at DPAC for this performance, you may have been welcomed by one of the Durham Way nders who help guests navigate from parking areas, distribute Broadway programs, and welcome guests at DPAC’s entry doors and entry lobby areas. This group of almost 200 City of Durham volunteers donate their time and talents in the spirit of helping everyone feel welcome at DPAC.

Though you may not have noticed them (and this is by design), this performance is also made safer by o -duty City of Durham police o cers working at DPAC. A team of o cers rotate assignment at DPAC events, and their presence is always valued, as they are onsite and ready to assist with any emergencies. In addition to these o cers, security at DPAC is also aided by the talents of K2 Solutions, one of the nation’s most respected and experienced team of canine weapon detection dogs, along with access control and crowd management provided by Sta -1 Services Group, a leader in event safety in the Triangle for nearly 35 years.

Since DPAC’s opening in 2008, we have been complimented often for being a live event setting where the guest experience reigns supreme. Audience Services at DPAC includes a team of dedicated Event Screeners, Ticket Takers, Ushers, and other guest services sta . With a culture built on being authentic and caring, with warm and friendly greetings, DPAC’s Audience Services sta are key to our guest experience survey scores (which have always been great) now being at an all-time high.

Backstage, the hundreds of productions we host each year are supported by a crew from DPAC’s roster of 250 professional stagehands. These stagehands are

all members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) union. Their work starts early in the morning and often goes late into the night. Without their expertise, the show would de nitely not go on.

The work and preparation at DPAC for events runs nearly 365 days a year. Most days, the earliest to arrive is our Facility Maintenance sta , who are responsible not only for every repair at DPAC, but also for the important preventative maintenance programs that help the building operate smoothly and look great before we open the doors to guests.

Before we open for our guests, DPAC’s Facility Operations sta are also here early, setting up our lobbies, checking the venue from front to back, and monitoring heating and air conditioning settings to keep everyone comfortable.

With 500,000 to 600,000 guests per year, there are so many others who contribute to your experience at our events, including food and beverage services provided by OVG Hospitality, a national leader in event hospitality. Their event days also start early with many deliveries, stocking bars and snack stands, serving guests and then reordering for the next week. Another important group is Cenplex Building Services, who make sure the venue is cleaned after every performance and fresh and tidy for the audience at the next show. Each of these valuable subcontract companies care just as much as anyone that everything is always “just right” for every show.

And this tribute to all that help us do what we do would not be complete without a tip of the hat to the many others in senior leadership at DPAC who work so hard behind the scenes in Community Engagement, Business Operations, Human Resources, Marketing, and Ticketing along with everyone at our parent companies Nederlander and PFM, plus City of Durham elected o cials and City sta .

With an incredible amount of gratitude, I salute every single person involved with DPAC, all who care so passionately, all who work so hard, each as important and valued as the stars who grace our stage.

Cheers to Team DPAC…DPAC pride.

We have an unfair advantage... We care more

DPAC's Broadway season is dedicated in loving memory of Betsy Kessler

For many of us, DPAC holds a special place in our hearts. From the bright lights and big smiles to that feeling of anticipation; there’s nothing quite like catching a show at DPAC. At least that’s what Betsy Kessler believed. Betsy will be deeply missed, and we are proud to celebrate her life and the memory of how she helped so many people in countless kind ways.

Betsy was the rst-ever Ticketing Specialist hired at DPAC. She would lovingly tell you that she had been here ‘since the dirt’. A larger-than-life persona, Betsy never met a stranger and made it her mission to connect everyone she met to DPAC. With her giant laugh, big rosy red cheeks and warm hugs, it was a joy watching Betsy do what she loved in the place she called home.

For nearly sixteen years, Betsy was DPAC’s greatest champion. She ushered in groups by the dozens, made thousands of Season Seat Members smile, and wore her DPAC red with pride. For me and many others, she will always be remembered as DPAC’s shining star.

Thank you, Betsy. It was a pleasure to see you shine.

Betsy Kessler (1952 – 2023)

DPAC salutes William (Bill) Brackett, Jr.

We take pride in presenting the best touring shows that Broadway has to offer, and one reason we can do that season after season is due to the tireless efforts of William (Bill) Brackett, Jr., retired Technical Director at the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC) and retired Director of Technical Operations at Professional Facilities Management (PFM), one of the two partner companies that operate DPAC.

As part of his work with PFM, Bill was the lead consultant for the stage and backstage portions of DPAC, and it was Bill’s goal to ensure that DPAC could welcome the largest touring shows from New York - Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King, Radio City Christmas Spectacular, and Wicked, to name a few. Many of the touring crew working on these shows provided input on the design of DPAC, all due to relationships Bill cultivated when these shows visited PPAC during his 21-year career in Providence.

Bill spent countless hours between Providence and Durham making sure the design came to fruition, all vital Audio, Lighting, and Rigging systems were specified and installed, and that all Production Staff were in place and ready to go ahead of DPAC’s opening performance on November 30, 2008, with BB King. DPAC would not be the place it is today without the vision, leadership, and mentorship of William Brackett, Jr. – one of the founding fathers of DPAC. 

The best of high school musical theater talent in our region

BY

The DPAC Rising Star Awards is a program designed to celebrate outstanding achievements in high school musical theater throughout Central North Carolina. The program highlights the meaningful work being done both on and o stage by dedicated teachers and students.

As the regional qualifying event for The National High School Musical Theatre Awards™ (NHSMTA), also known as The Jimmy Awards®, The DPAC Rising Star Awards brings together high school musical theater students from Durham, the Triangle and the surrounding region to perform and compete for a chance to represent DPAC in the national nals in New York City.

To learn more about how to register your school’s theater program for The DPAC Rising Star Awards, please visit https://www.dpacnc. com/community/dpac-risingstar-awards.

In Spring 2024, DPAC named Alex Fluker (Panther Creek High School) and Conor Kruger (Enloe High School) The DPAC Rising Star Awards’ Best Actress and Best Actor winners. Alex and Conor then went on to compete nationally at The Jimmy Awards®.

This year, the national competition included a total of 102 nominees representing 51 Regional Awards Programs from across the country. Alex and Conor worked with Broadway professionals and made their Broadway debuts on Nederlander’s Minsko Theatre stage, where Disney’s The Lion King performs to sold-out audiences nightly. Both represented DPAC and Central North Carolina exceptionally well, and we cannot wait to see their bright futures.

Help local students experience their rst ever Broadway show

Discover Broadway o ers Season Seat Members a way to donate tickets so their valuable seats do not go unused.

Thanks to the generosity of DPAC’s Season Seat Members, hundreds of tickets have been donated to deserving students from high schools and universities throughout Durham. For many students, these seats provided opportunities to experience their rstever Broadway show.

For those that we serve through this program, these opportunities are more than just a ticket, they are a chance to experience something that could inspire goals and dreams for the future.

Here is how you can donate:

• If you know in advance that you cannot attend a show, or even if one member of your party will not be joining you, simply contact DPAC at DiscoverBroadway@dpacnc.com.

• You will receive an acknowledgment from DPAC that your unused tickets will be transferred to an area student.

• DPAC will handle all other details and provide instructions to the recipient on how to access their tickets.

PLEASE NOTE: Ticket donations must be made at least 72 hours prior to the performance date. Discover Broadway donations do not provide tax donation receipts. 

At DPAC, we’re committed to Guest Courtesy. Please remember to be a good neighbor to those seated around you.

After the Performance Yes, the lobby gets busy and the parking lots can be tricky, but please remain at your seats until the houselights come up.

As a courtesy to the performers and other audience members, DPAC asks that you do not rush for the exits prematurely at the end of the performance.

Entering and Exiting the Seating Area

Please time your exits and reentry to the seating area to occur only at intermission or breaks between songs. This is a courtesy to other guests around you, who will appreciate you keeping these disruptions to a minimum.

Kids at DPAC

Please note that all guests require a ticket, regardless of age. Children under the age of six are not allowed at most DPAC performances including Broadway, Concerts and Comedy shows.

For some shows, DPAC will make recommendations on the appropriate minimum age based on the content and the length of the event. Parental discretion is always advised and judgment of the appropriateness of the content for each show should be made on an individual basis prior to purchase.

Children must be able to sit quietly in their own seat without disturbing other guests. As a further courtesy to our guests, DPAC recommends one parent or chaperone for every child in attendance.

It Can Wait Please save texting until AFTER the show. The light from phones is distracting to others throughout the theater. Please keep them turned o .

It’s Superstar Entertainment, Not a Food Fest Small snacks and drinks are welcome in the seating area, but as a courtesy to those around you, eat and drink as quietly as possible. Please know that odors and noisy wrappers can disturb others. We also ask that you nish sandwiches or other large food items before entering the seating area.

Photography / Video Recording Using Mobile Phones

At DPAC, each event that we host determines their own policy on photography and video recording using mobile phones.

Please note that GoPros, tablets, and cameras of any kind are prohibited at all DPAC events. All Broadway shows prohibit photography and video recording.

Quiet Please

Once the show starts, please let the stage be the center of attention. We ask that you turn o all cell phones and limit conversation. If children are attending this performance with you, please exit the theater immediately if they become restless or talkative. 

Sharing the magic of live entertainment

DPAC’s Local Hero Spotlight recognizes those who are doing great deeds in service to their communities or families. Recipients receive a VIP night out at DPAC and in many cases, this night out provides an opportunity for those who have never been to DPAC to have their rst-ever live theater experience. Community members selected for this honor receive a DPAC VIP experience, including premium seating to a select show, VIP parking and admission to the BMW of Southpoint President’s Club hospitality area.

Want to nominate someone? Visit DPACnc.com for more information. 

Congratulations to all our Local Heroes

Each fall, DPAC selects high school students from across Central North Carolina who are passionate about live entertainment to serve as Performing Arts Ambassadors throughout the school year.

SO L VE:

Rearrange the checkers to create 4 columns—black/red/black/red/, touching only 2 checkers.

If you figured it out, congratulations. Move the 2 red checkers in the first column to the other side of the grid, and use them to push rows 2 and 4 to the left. Solving the problem requires unconventional thinking.

This illustrates our approach to legal issues—looking beyond the expected path to find solutions for our clients.
