THE NUTCRACKER
ACT I—CHRISTMAS EVE
It is Christmas Eve in the toy shop of Uncle Drosselmeyer, a magical man and marvelous inventor of toys; he is also the godfather of Clara Smith. Dross is putting the finishing touches on the enchanting toys he is taking as gifts to the Smith’s annual Holiday festivities.
Meanwhile at the Smith’s house, the final preparations for their party are taking place in the foyer as their children, Clara and Fritz, play in the front yard awaiting their guests. Soon the guests arrive and there is great enthusiasm at the wonder of this memorable time spent amongst the beautiful tree and decorations that offer respite from any other time of the year. Everyone greets each other with warmth and spirit, swept up in the joy of being together. Dr. Smith divides the children for games and dances; all the adults participate and soon the grandparents arrive at the party. Eggnog is served and, most important of all, presents are given out.
Suddenly the room grows dark with an exhilarating energy that causes the children to run to their parents with anticipation. Uncle Drosselmeyer mysteriously appears and introduces nephew to Clara, and she is instantly smitten by him. Drosselmeyer proceeds to entertain the assembled guests with the most amazing magical illusions. At the end of his show, he presents Clara with a beautiful Nutcracker that he made especially for her. Enthusiastically, she shows all of her friends. They pass it around, tossing it to one another, when during the game the Nutcracker is dropped and breaks in the fall. Clara is heartbroken but Dr. Smith and Dross console her. The nephew brings Clara a bed for the Nutcracker. She tucks the Nutcracker in and puts the bed under the tree.
The last dance of the evening takes place and afterwards everyone departs to their homes. Once the guests are gone and the house is quiet, Drosselmeyer returns to repair the Nutcracker and bring him to life with his magic. Clara enters the room in her nightgown, goes directly to the Nutcracker realizing he is fixed, and cradles him in her arms.
A commotion interrupts Clara’s joyous moment. Out of nowhere, she is stormed upon by giant mice and their leader, the Rat King. All the children’s gifts from this extraordinary evening come to life from the magic of the Holiday, with troops and toys alike helping Clara fight back with all of her might. Through the course of the battle, the Nutcracker falls to the Rat King. In an effort to distract him, Clara throws her shoe at the Rat King, runs to the bed, and faints. In a final stab from the Nutcracker himself, the Rat King succumbs to his injury and the battle is over.
Exhausted from the encounter, Clara falls fast asleep while her bed is swept away into a snowy evening conjured by the North Wind. The Nutcracker is transformed into a handsome prince who then departs on a sleigh with Clara at his side. They are sent off by the North Wind to the Land of Sweets as the Snowflakes dance to his captivating breeze.
INTERMISSION
ACT II—THE LAND OF SWEETS
The curtain rises on twelve Chocolate Truffles. The Sugar Plum Fairy, who rules over this Kingdom of Sweets, makes a regal entrance and dances a charming variation to the tinkling celesta. The Truffles enclose her in a semicircle of love. Then leading the Truffles off, the Sugar Plum Fairy welcomes the full candy box: Chocolate and Coffee and Tea sweets, Candy Canes, Ribbon Candy and Gingerbread Cookies, and a lovely candy Butterfly. The Nutcracker Prince and Clara arrive on a cloud.
The Prince introduces Clara to the Sugar Plum Fairy. He relates the story of the battle with the mice and she congratulates him on the victory and escorts Clara to a throne. Clara is given numerous sweets to eat as she watches the entertainment. There follows a series of dances by characters of the candy kingdom, culminating in the grandest dance of all—a pas de deux with the Sugar Plum Fairy and her cavalier.
Just as the festivities in the Land of Sweets conclude, Uncle Dross appears and Clara finds herself transported back home where the magic began. She could not recall if this momentous evening was reality or just a dream; but with her treasured Nutcracker in her arms, she falls into a deep slumber with hopes that this fantastical memory will live forever in her mind.
