A TRUE FEAST FOR THE SOUL
From the editor
Greetings! Welcome to our Spring 20/20 Edition of Faith Works Magazine! We’re so excited to share this issue with you all. We’ve included some awesome articles and interviews, and some wonderful tips and ideas for embracing the spring season and beating the quarantine blues. As we brace ourselves for the days ahead it is vital that we encounter them from a place of Peace and Joy. During this stressful and trying season we are currently experiencing, please let us remember that together, with the help of the Lord, we can overcome this devastation and emerge even better individuals. For those of you who have young children, it’s important now more than ever that you are completely honest with them about the uncertainty of the near future. Its’ wisdom to assure them that things may change drastically going forward, however; encourage them to know that you are there for them whatever occurs. Children tend to be very perceptive… so trying to deceive them about the seriousness of the effects of COVID19 is probably not a great idea. I encourage you to stay safe, be prepared for whatever, and trust God for everything! This world is ever changing but there is one thing that we can be confident remains consistent…the Word of the Lord and His undying love for us. Patricia A. Bunton editor in chief 1

A LESSON IN RESILIENCE By: Tamara E. Estick-Gregory Time passed and our garden evolved
T
he foliage on the red bush thrived and flourished while the white bush’s foliage seemed stunted. Disappointment set in and I thought to myself, “I knew I should have gotten two red bushes. The white one isn’t that pretty anyway.” Weeks later, all of the plants had tremendous growth except the white rose bush. Many of its leaves had dried up and it appeared to be dying.... poor unfortunate thing. I decided to leave it planted rather than digging it up and replacing it with another red bush, as I had once thought of doing. You can never tell…perhaps it would die and then make a comeback in spring. A month or two passed and the red rose bush grew, budded and flowered while the white bush continued to do poorly. A week after pulling up a weed near the red rose bush, the new red blooms died, and all the once bright green leaves had begun to turn yellow and dried. I frantically re-dug a hole and pulled any weeds that had sprung up next to rose red, watered a little and fertilized all to no avail. This beautiful plant which had so much promise was now just as un-loveable as the other bush. While watching one of my daughter’s favorite shows, the main character spoke about loving a garden and my daughter said to me, “some of our garden doesn’t need lots and lots of love…some of them are already growing.” I began observing my daughter as she watered her garden. She spent a considerable amount of time watering the area where the white rose bush once stood. She would pour there, stand back and observe and then asked, “Mommy, what should I water next?” My small child, unlike me, had been giving the extra special attention, love and nourishment to the one that was most needy and neglected. I was ashamed. After all, is it not written that, ‘A child shall lead them?’ It was in that moment that I learned a valuable lesson

from both my daughter and My Daughter’s Garden. I learned that day, that true love asks impartiality. True love embraces the whole and does not play favorites. It is not a journey of popularity. Though she was only partially right (for even the growing ones still needed love), she was a better steward over loving her garden than I had been. True love is a gift and it gives without reservation. We must love the unlovable and take extra care to pour out even more into those that seem to be the least likely of all to deserve it. There was a period in my life when I felt so very overwhelmed. I had been broadsided with a myriad of challenges spearheaded by a diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma (of a rare typing) delivered on an express train right into my home, colliding with and shattering my husband’s bones. I recall struggling to cope with coping; wondering how much longer I had to be strong. I felt as though I was being pulled into a million directions: caregiver, doctor, nurse, pharmacist, wife, mother and employee. I was always the strong one. I was born a fighter, but suddenly the warrior had come home, and she was tired. Who was going to nurture me? I was exhausted and I needed a break. I was serious! I needed time to just not care; feel, breathe or grow. I just wanted to sit beneath the shade of a tree and quit. Don’t get me wrong...I wasn’t giving up on living, just taking a break from life for just a little while. I recall my Pastor saying to me, “there are so many times that you have wanted to give up but there is a fighter in you that refuses to quit. It is the way you were created. You couldn’t quit even if you tried.” As my daughter faithfully and consistently watered her garden with love, giving especial attention to her white rose, I watched that tiny bush that I had so prematurely given up on, emerge from the shadow of the marigold, (a miniature bloom of white tinged with pink), small yet resilient. Right in those shadows, I learned yet another valuable lesson from My Daughters Garden; when faced with overwhelming situations; cramped by the pressures of life, it is in that every instant that you need to remind yourself that there is a fighter in you. It is then that you arise and do what you were created to do; WIN!

The Reality of Our Sameness By: DAWNA BUNTON
I
remember growing up as a child in the suburbs of southern New Jersey and being star-struck by so many celebrities that I saw on TV and in the movies. As a child, I believed that what I was seeing take place on those shows was real. The stunts and the strength that was demonstrated by the heroes and heroines, was something I wished that I could do to show off for my friends at school and take down school bullies. I never realized back then that those were actors who were portraying characters who in some cases, were very different and perhaps even the total opposite of who the person is in real life. There was surely a lot of training that these individuals had to undergo to be believable, and lots of work had been done behind the scenes to create these illusions for our entertainment. Ironically, when an actor played their role particularly well, it was easy for them to be perceived as being that character in real life. It was hard for the public to separate the person from the character they played. This case of mistaken identity still holds true for many actors today. As humans, there is a natural inclination within us to worship. It is intrinsically encoded into our core. When we don’t understand why it is there, it becomes easy for us to misdirect our affectionate reverence and adoration to the wrong target. God, our Creator and designer created us to worship Him. The longing we have deep within for something greater than ourselves is from Him and for Him. When we don’t make the connection and see God as the greater one, or have that relationship with him, our fleshly passions will dictate and direct who and what we worship. That is why it is easy for us to find ourselves worshipping celebrities and esteemed public figures. When we see them as better than or of greater value or importance than us, we feel like they are not the same as us. We often see the rules– the rules that we all should be abiding by – as being different for them. In our eyes, their celebrity places them in a god-like category. I have seen people become extremely angry and lash out against others who have spoken ill of their favorite popular celebrity. I have witnessed people fall away from God and the church because their
favorite preacher or Christian leader fell into a place of sin. I have also viewed celebrity legal trials where people could not believe that the individual on trial could possibly have been guilty, or at least they should receive a lesser punishment because after all, they are a celebrity. Here is where the lines get blurred. Honor is due those who lead well and to those who have earned their place of status and elevation. It is fine and even proper to esteem and even admire them. It is necessary for us to have leaders and role models in our cultures and in society. The problem comes in when we make them idols. We have tendency to place people on pedestals and think of them more highly than we ought to. However, the moment they disappoint us or wreck our self-imposed glossy image of them, many of us find ourselves devastated and taken aback. We finally realize that they are just like us. The reality is…there are some of us that stand out because of an exceptional level of talent or knowledge or skill. Some among us are especially anointed or gifted in ways that are incredibly attractive. These things have been given to us by God to enjoy each other and the various contributions that we all have. We don’t all have the same abilities or measures of aptitude and potential and that’s great! In essence…these differences are the measure of sameness that makes us human and relatable. When we see each other as human first, we relate to the person and not the persona. We identify with the commonality of weakness and imperfection that we all share as a species. Even those classified as geniuses and savants – even they are made of the same stuff as the rest of us. So, the next time you see your favorite celebrity, remember that these folks hurt, they have problems and yes, they encounter tragedy and misfortune despite their status. Your pastor or spiritual leader has fears and deals with doubt and insecurity from time to time. Your mentors and role models won’t always make good choices and may be battling their own demons privately. Let’s not judge them or compare ourselves against them, but instead empathize with them and acknowledge the reality of our sameness. It’s comforting.

YOU CAN WIN IN THIS SEASON By: Clyres E. Minor
W
e are living in some very dark times and we have been for decades. As we know, the entire world is currently going through a tragic pandemic. People are sick and dying alone. In America, the unemployment rates have risen dramatically and over 2 million people have filed for unemployment. In an attempt to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, numerous businesses have closed around the world. While so much negativity is around us, as believers we are not subject to the global economic tragedies of the world. We can still win If we stand on God’s word. The one scripture that comes to mind is Hebrews 13:5 NLT, “Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you I will never abandon you.” Walt Disney first began working on his vision of being the greatest cartoonist of all time during the heart of the Great Depression. Walt had an idea and a vision. Even though the economy was in a depression that did not stop him from pursuing his vision. He failed greatly not once but three times, by starting too soon and not having the financial and legal support he needed. After receiving his first check he rented a location, hired a cartoonist, bought equipment and began production. But, within a year he lost it all and ended up homeless. He failed this time because he did not have a financial plan. The second time, he borrowed money, hired employees again, this time he hired his brother to handle the finances while he continued with the dream. Still working on the business, he didn’t follow the direction of his accountant, and spent more money than he was bringing in. However, he landed a large contract with Warner Brothers, only to find out that in their contract they kept most of the royalties, and all the rights of the first image of Mickey Mouse (first image was under a different name), leaving Walt with pennies while stealing most of his employees. Now, we all know the ending to the story. Walt finally started listening and created a new image and a PLAN which birthed the Walt Disney Company that we know of today. Why did I tell you this story? God has given each of us a vision, gifts, and talents. Many have already started a business and/or a ministry. You may have started and failed at everything that you have tried to put into place. You may have even considered giving up. But know that it is not over yet because God is just getting started. He does not work based on global circumstances, but on what he has said and commanded to happen. As we declare with our mouths…that what God commands in heaven will be released on earth, we too shall win no matter what the world looks like. God has his own economy.

Start right now, begin to get up and declare out loud …your VICTORY is here and now. Now, in order to win there is some work that needs to be done. You must have a plan, a business plan, and a team which includes a team of professionals and likeminded people on your side. Take the time to write down the vision. The business plan consists of the mission, vision, market research, and financial plan. Habakkuk 2:2 NLT says, “The Lord said to me, ‘Write my answer plainly on tablets, so that a runner can carry the correct message to others.” Without out a plan, you plan to fail. Use this time of quarantine to work what the Lord has given you and do what you were created to do. At the start of the quarantine God spoke to me using this scripture, Proverbs 6:6-8 NLT “Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise! Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work they labor hard all summer gathering food for the winter.” I went to google the life of an ant and boy do they work hard. They are gathering food, tools, and scraps all summer long. They must do this when it is hot, because when it is cold their body can’t endure the weather…it will literally kill them. Another thing I learned is they help each other out with large projects. All while the queen is home producing more workers for the next season. The scripture in Proverbs prompted me to get up and get moving. I began by completing the projects I had not completed and starting things I was supposed to start. All while organizing and preparing my family to move into the next season. I am taking free online webinars and reading a lot more. I encourage you to do the same. Do not be like Walt Disney who started his great vision without a plan and proper support. Be like the ant who has the plan and the vision and works hard during a season of work, so when rest comes, you can enjoy it. Walt Disney started a business in the heart of the Great Depression and in the depression gave birth the greatest entertainment and amusement parks the world has ever known. God does not have favorites, what he does for one man He can do for another, as long as we are willing to do the work and keep the faith. In Jesus Name, Amen Clyres E. Everybodys Got A Grand-Momma By: Patricia A. Bunton
I
ts’ true…everybody has or has had a grand-momma. They are a very special breed of loving, warm and giving human-beings. Grand-moms spoil us, cater to our wants, buy us stuff our parents won’t, and rarely yell at us. There is something extra calming about their hugs and kisses. They are irreplaceable and that’s a fact, and my grand-momma was hands down the best. I considered writing about my wonderful mother and sharing what an amazing mom and individual she was (my mom passed away in 2017). Instead, I decided to share some of my fondest memories of my sweet and loving grandmother instead. Now don’t get it twisted, I dearly love and miss my mom however, I felt that sharing some of the great times I had growing up with my “momma Fannie”(that’s what we called her), would shed a little sunshine into someone else’s day this Mother’s Day. Momma Fannie as everyone so lovingly called her (aka Fannie Mae-Henderson-Jennings), was my grandmother on my mother’s side of the family. She was the warmest, kindest and most loving human being I have ever known. She was generous to a fault, and tirelessly dedicated to her children and grand children (and anyone else’s for that matter)! Momma went home to be with the Lord many years ago now, but I can fondly remember days long past, when I would awaken to the aroma of some of the greatest food anybody ever tasted wafting from her kitchen. Momma Fannie would get up early in the morning and begin her daily vigil of preparing breakfast and dinner for us. You see, momma was from the old school she did mostly all of her cooking at one time…in the morning. Even though she was a true-blue southern cook, momma had her own unique style of preparing traditional southern dishes. For instance, her deep-dish apple pie was cooked in a big (3) quart boiler (aka “pot”) and believe me, it was the best thing you ever laid your lips on! I loved any and everything Momma cooked…we all did!!! However, my absolute favorite dish was her amazing teacakes. In my opinion, they were the best thing since fried meat! Great food that warmed the heart and filled
10
the belly, that’s what she gave us along with some of the greatest memories we could ever hope for. I vividly recall as a very young child staying with Momma Fannie who lived with her father, my great-granddaddy, Frank Henderson (aka Poppa Frank) in Green County, Alabama. My younger siblings and I would stay with her during the school year until we were old enough to attend school in Tuscaloosa, where my older siblings lived with my parents. Those were some of the best times of my young life. food, family and fun. You see, food has always played an important role in our African American culture. It just seems to make fun more fun. Any celebration, occasion, or event was a good reason to cook and eat some good ole’ “down home” food. As a child some of the things I most anxiously looked forward to were breakfast, lunch and dinner! Back then, food was unspoiled by chemicals, additives, hormones and preservatives. It was healthy, affordable, accessible and just plain GOOD all the time. If we were poor, nobody told us! Eating stuff like pig feet, tails and ears, hog maws and chittlins, ox tails, lye corn (aka hominy corn), plum dumplings and the like, was living it up for us. And those old wood stoves and cast-iron skillets and pots made for the best cooking in the world…any where… any time ever! Trust me you have not eaten good cornbread until you have tasted Momma Fannie’s cornbread cooked on that wood stove in a cast iron skillet. Lord have mercy! You talking about good-shut the door good! My dear grand-momma touched so many lives and was a wonderful inspiration to all of her loving family and friends alike. Those “oh so special” memories of enjoying life with her will live on inside of me for years to come, and as I continue to share them, they continue to warm my heart and encourage me to know that I was loved by the best grand-momma ever! Love and miss you my Momma Fannie. HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

ALERT! ALERT! THERE IS A VACCINE! By: CHAD TAYLOR
T
HE PROBLEM: For the last 20 + years the word REPENTANCE has been scrubbed from our spiritual vernacular. Remember when you were a kid and were caught saying a bad word and got your mouth washed out with soap? REPENTANCE has been transmuted into a dirty word in most Christian circles. Amongst the “au courant,” and the spiritually “enlightened.” REPENTANCE has become superannuated, outdated and out of style. The pseudo sophisticated teachers tell us that it “ended with John the Baptist.” But they also omit the first words of Christ in the onset of His ministry: “REPENT FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS AT HAND.” Fast forward to Acts 2:38, and we see an entirely different doctrine than the post-modern preterist are teaching today, “Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit...” Again Acts 3:19, “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.” REPENTANCE was not an antiquated doctrine of the unfashionable in the early Church. Absolutely not. It was the linchpin to every breakthrough and every revival in the Bible. Without it, you are like a gun and no bullets. A car with no gasoline. It looks good, feels good but has absolutely no effect or power to change anything. In Acts 11:18, in the Jerusalem counsel following the account of Paul and Barnabas of the revival amongst the Gentiles, they exclaimed with jubilance, “We can see that God has also given the Gentiles the privilege of repenting of their sins and receiving eternal life...” REPENTANCE was a privilege! It was the most honorable and glorifying act that they could perform. It is the pure worship that the Father is searching for in this hour. THE VACCINE: You see, REPENTANCE is not out of date, out of style, or outmoded at all. IT IS THE ANTIDOTE! IT IS THE VACCINE. It is the antitoxin to every plague, drought and famine in the Bible. When they REPENTED with a broken heart and tears to God, He without exception moved! It is the counteragent to our current crisis, and WE NEED TO FIND OUR WAY BACK TO IT NOW! Repentance, in covenant with prayer, is the countermeasure in this critical mass. It is the antivenin, the neutralizer in our adversity.
MY FRIEND, REPENTANCE IS THE VACCINE! There is a brokenness, a divine sorrow that He is prescribing to all of us in this hour: “For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation...” (2nd Cor 7:10) A divine sorrow. A Holy Spirit inspired REPENTANCE from our nation’s sin, our divisions, our pride of life. Repent from our “multitude of sins” which in turn, will inevitably bring about a revival in the midst of this calamity. A salvation. The Wise Preacher in Ecclesiastes 7:3 tells us, “Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better...” Another version says it this way, “sadness that has a refining influence on us.” It refines us in the fire. It sifts the wheat from the chaff and produces faith that is much more precious than gold. In this climatic hour, as we are confined to our houses, let us take these scriptures to heart and allow true REPENTANCE to shape our future. Listen, “The heart of the wise is in the HOUSE OF MOURNING, but the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure.” (Ecclesiastes 7:3) Friend, WE need Godly sorrow that leads to repentance. We need millions of “Houses of mourning” around the world. Holy Spirit breathed repentance across the land crying out to God for mercy and grace. “Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. And he said... It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent and you are witnesses of all these things...” (Luke 24:45-48) Teacher, prophet, pastor, worship leader, lead us into repentance! Many will follow I promise you! As Catherine Booth, the co-founder of the Salvation Army once wrote, “Let them see the tears in your eyes, or if you can’t weep, let them hear the tears in your voice. Let them realize that you feel their danger and are in distress for them. Then God will give His Holy Spirit so they can be saved...” Take up the gauntlet! The baton passed to us from Finney and Booth and an army of other revivalists, prophets and prayer warriors. Lead us into the rarefied air of repentance and prayer! The world is waiting...

HEAVEN IS …Is Anyone Listening? By: Patricia A. Bunton
Q
uarantine, social distancing, snitches’ hotlines, shelter at home, words some two to three months ago were foreign to many of us. These have now become common place in our world and are reflective of the daily uncertainty of life going forward. How swiftly our world has changed. Almost in the twinkling of an eye-suddenly, our reality shifted. We are being told that the major shut-downs in our cities and states of businesses and social-outlets may be indefinite at this juncture. We are being forced to embrace a “new norm”. As believers we should never be in despair concerning these events. We serve a God who is the Ruler and Maker of Heaven and Earth! He is ever–present and yet in control of all that concerns His own. There are days that I look around in complete disbelief at even the city that I live in, and sigh heavily. Can this be it for us for months to come? Heaven forbid! Heaven is truly speaking saints. Even in the midst of all of the turmoil, unrest, fear and death that we are experiencing…there is a “word from the Lord”. He is saying “there is a shifting taking place and things as we

once knew them …will be no more”. There is no going back to “business as usual”. The entire world has shifted and changed. God’s word is unchangeable, unerring, immutable and eternal. It is dependable, reliable and consistent. When He speaks He does not change His mind or take His words it back. There is a rumbling in the Heavens… that’s God’s voice speaking to His people. In this unexpected season of “quiet” we have been afforded the opportunity to take time to “hear from Heaven”. God is speaking to His church collectively, and His children individually. He has consistently warned and admonished us to “change our ways”. He has urged us to humble ourselves, pray, seek Him, repent, turn and be healed. But even as it was with Job…”the very thing we feared the most has come upon us”. There is a lost and dying world out there yet in need of a Savior. We must seize this opportunity. For the hour is now to become the change that this world so desperately needs. I encourage you to begin to practice listening for the sounds of Heaven…they are evident, and as you become sensitive to His voice, you will begin to readily identify His call and run swiftly to answer the sound.

hen Zoe Brooks was five-years old, she could dribble, pass and shoot a basketball better than most boys or girls more than twice her age. “How is that possible?” people would often ask her dad, Maurice. His answer was short and simple. “She came into the world like that. It’s a gift from God.” And now, 10 years later, Brooks is still displaying the talent that the Heavenly Father blessed her with. The Plainfield, N.J. resident just completed her first season at Trenton Catholic Academy. She rolled a career’s worth of accomplishments into one COVID19-shortened basketball campaign. Trenton Catholic finished the season with a 28-1 record, winning county and sectional championships along the way. MaxPreps ranked the Iron Mikes as the No. 10 team in the entire country. Individually, Brooks took home a couple of tournament MVP awards, was named the Trenton Times Player of the Year and was the only New Jersey freshman chosen for the All-State team.
16
Brooks averaged 13.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 4.6 steals per game. Not bad for a freshman playing varsity on a team stacked with Division 1 talent. “I just tried to do whatever the team needed,” Brooks said. “Some games I came up with big plays on defense. Other games I had to score more. Sometimes it was my passing. I just like to win.” The reason the lights never seemed too bright for her is because she has been playing high-level hoops with the New Jersey Sparks AAU squad since the fourth grade. “AAU basketball prepared me for high school,” said Brooks, who despite only being in 8th grade last summer, played on the Sparks’ 17-and-under EYBL team. “I’ve played all over the country with and against some very talented players.” Brooks, who is 5-9, plays both guard positions. The strength of her game is driving to the hoop, although she has an above-average jumper and takes great joy in her ability to set her teammates up for easy scoring opportunities. She has already received a dozen college scholarship offers, but despite her onthe-court success, remains extremely humble.
“We were one win away from playing in the Tournament of Champions and our season got cut short because of the virus,” Brooks said. “I have three high school seasons left and I want to help my team win as many championships as possible.” When she’s not playing basketball, what does Brooks like to do in her spare time? “I love to play Fortnite, watch Supergirl, talk on the phone and ride my bike,” Brooks said. “My favorite hobby is making my own highlight videos. That is a lot of fun. I try to think of different cool things to do. A lot of the videos on my Instagram page, I made. I want to go to a college with a strong communications department. My dad is a sports editor and I want to do something in sports when I get older.” Brooks also serves as the hype person for Trenton Catholic and the Sparks. “I’m silly, so I like to dance and have fun,” Brooks said. “I’m never nervous so I try to keep all of my teammates loose.” Although she has achieved so much in such a little amount of time, what other goals has she set for herself? “Last year I got cut from the USA team, but I want to make it next year,” Brooks said. “I want to graduate from college and play in the WNBA. I also would love to have my own sneaker one day.”

THE SHIFTING HAS BEGUN By: Connie Weikert
F
rom Kent State to Deep State, from Woodstock to Hip-hop, from Watergate to Pizza-gate our world has undergone serious fundamental changes. The homogenized and pasteurized mainstream news media has blurred the lines between good and evil. A deviant intelligence community and whitewashed politicians have been complicent in the destruction of our moral code. Hollywood promotes risky behavior as Wall Street pushes a new definition of profit making, all designed to fund the dark agenda. Modern plagues such as human trafficking go unnoticed as millions of children are sacrificed to Moloch. The spiral downward travels at Mach speed, yet a sleeping public refuses to wake up. Our minds go on overload as we attempt to understand what all this means for us and our loved ones. As a nation we appear undone.
“Nobody’s right if everybody’s wrong...” There was a time in our society when you could respectfully disagree. No more. You’re either on the right or on the left, there is no middle ground. We are as divided as a nation could be and still share common borders. “There’s a man with a gun over there telling me I’ve got to beware.” Violence in all its forms reigns in America today. Gangs, drug cartels, groups like Antifa, revolving door jailbirds and possibly our own family members threaten us as hidden socialist networks attempt to disarm John Q. Citizen. Anymore …our lives are in constant danger. Americans are arming themselves as never before. Fear strikes the heart causing peace loving people to create a bastille of protection. “Personal space” has become a human right. Say anything someone else doesn’t like and you’re labeled a “hater”. In some places in America today such “hate speech” will land you in jail. Never mind if you are speaking the truth in love, say something that offends another individual and the police will haul you away. The thought police are everywhere. “Stop children, what’s that sound? Everybody look what’s going down!” We don’t talk to each other anymore... we talk at each other. Everyone has their own “talking points”, their personal “narrative”. If your opinion does not jive with mine…you must be deleted from my friends list. We label everything, judge everyone and categorize all input constantly. We’re so busy shielding ourselves from what we deem as a possible threat we fail to see how controlled we are. It’s time to wake up and smell the proverbial coffee before its’ too late. God has given us a global time out to do just that.

Anguished and grief stricken I read the account of my schoolmate’s death in the pages of Life Magazine, circa 1969. Jeffery Miller was struck down by a stray bullet at Kent State University while crossing the campus to his next class. This was a wakeup call I did not ask for. My next wakeup call came on 911 as I watched thousands of New Yorkers plunge to their deaths, a few of them friends from the old neighborhood. Now a new wakeup call has captured my attention in the form of a plague, and I wonder how many will die this time? Lately I find myself praying a singular repeating prayer, “Please Lord, no more death!” When my husband died in 2018… I started crying and I haven’t stopped. It’s as though the travail of a lost world has been put upon me as I seek relief that never comes. Crying out to God with groans and mutterings I do not understand, at last I collapse into sleep for an hour or two. Prophetically, I was told in 1991 that I was a watchman, a job I never asked for. Now I feel compelled to send out one more warning... “The enemy is at the door!” Humanity has an enemy and his name is Lucifer, the Satan. He is antichrist and antichristian. He will do whatever it takes to shut you up or shut you down. Coronavirus is one more weapon in his arsenal and worldwide he’s taking us out in droves. Isn’t it curious this virus goes for our very breath? Only prayer will defeat him. Only a pure heart threatens him. Only a chaste lifestyle will overcome him. The Call to Arms is a Call to Holiness! Heaven cries out for justice… it will not be delayed. If we are to survive this assault, we must come clean with the Lord. We must pray that He reveals all the hidden leaven. We must demand holiness of ourselves, for we serve a holy God. Before the Lord can usher in the last great harvest, He needs us committed to purity, whatever that means personally. So, as we spend our time in confinement, we must seek Him for the transformation in us which is so sorely needed. If we will do that, we will see the reaper overtake the sower in our lifetime! We will see the latter rain! We will experience joy unspeakable with our Master as a lost and dying world turns to Him for relief! And perhaps, just perhaps, we will see the sky split open as the Body of Christ refuses to be separated any longer! I am convinced, that this is why we as a people are confined at this time. Father is forcing us to look inward and do some house cleaning. If we will do that, carry out His will in this hour, I believe the transformation will bring translation into His abiding presence. It is time for the Head to take His rightful place upon the Body! “Even so, come Lord Jesus!”

Queens Corner Celebrate You! by: patricia bunton
I
IT’S PAMPER TIME QUEENS!
’m certain that many of you are suffering from “sheltering-in-place” overload by now and in need of emergency pampering. No visits to the hair salon, no mani/pedi, no massage, brows totally hit, lashes all but gone…you need help girl! And guessy what, your help has arrived my Queens!
§ A good moisturizer (for face and body… Olay is great for face) § Hand and foot soak (O-P-I has a great one $9.41 JC Penny) § An inexpensive pumice stone (for foot scrub) § An inexpensive loofah sponge (for bath)
In the midst of screaming children, barking dogs, and the daily demands of laundry, dinner and constant cleaning “ground zero must seem like a mad-house right about now. But I assure you, the delirium and confusion you are currently experiencing, will begin to slowly fade as sanity, common sense and an overwhelming feeling of well-being re-emerge. Just follow the instructions that are included below and you will be singing my praises for days to come!
For your “celebrate/pamper me” day, the goal is to create a combination peaceful meditation/ relaxation and spa-like escape that will allow you to sail away to calmer more peaceful seas for one day. The focus has to be solely on you and “you” alone. No kiddies, no housework, no cooking or cleaning…period! You may need to enlist the help of dad, a friend or family member in creating the time and space you need to successfully carry this thing off. Queen…do what you gotta do!
You might need to first make a quick pharmacy run to purchase the needed items for this “quick fix” shenanigans. Some of these items you may already have and that’s great, however; if you don’t have them or they’re almost gone…now might be a good time to go ahead and restock.
Make certain there are You can begin your spa day in any order that you choose, however; I suggest that you do your facial and mani/pedi first, then your bubble bath with cucumber eye treatment. After the bubble bath, complete the mani/pedi pamper with nail and toe polishing. Order some take out just for you, and revel in the peace and tranquility of your special time alone with just you and your thoughts.
First off, you are going to need a plastic tub if you don’t already have one, and some soothing/ relaxing music. Your shopping list of necessities is as follows: § Epsom salt (for bath) § Bubble bath (the smell good kind) § Nail polish remover (some of you won’t this one!) § A good nail file and clipper (not the all-inone type!!) § A couple of bottles of “good” nail polish § A cucumber (for eyes…might need to make a market run as well) § An aromatherapy candle or two (lavender or lemongrass) § An inexpensive facial scrub or mask
32
An inexpensive alternative for those of you on a tight budge is this low-cost face and body scrub.
Sugar scrub:
1 cup brown or white sugar ¼ cup oil (olive or coconut) 2 teaspoons essential oil or 2 tablespoons vanilla I really hope you Queens take advantage of this time to celebrate “you” for all that you are and do. Taking care of you is one of the most valuable gifts you can give to yourself and your family. ENJOY YOUR DAY!!
OVERCOMING CAIN By: Dr. Marci Bryant
A
s humans, we were all born with what I call a “Cain” effect. Simply put …we have the capacity to “sin” both consciously and unconsciously, and this effect must be overcome by an act of our will. We fight battles every single day, whether we are aware of them or not. We fight the battle individually with ourselves and with others. But too often, we don’t relate the battles that we encounter with the root cause. Where did it all start? It all started in a place called Eden. It started with Adam and Eve and then onto their offspring, Cain and Abel. Cain was the aggressor and Abel the victim. I fought a battle against Cain…I lost. His influence to do what was wrong was greater than my ability to stand against him. I fought a battle against Abel...he lost. He was good, reserved, trusting, he did not put up any resistance to what was going to destroy him. The essence of these two natures tends to show up in each of our lives. They must be dealt with…not with our human reasoning, but with the mind of Christ. As God was present with mankind from the beginning, so He is with us today. Cain’s nature represents hard work; strategizing and the need for advancement and recognition, but it has one major flaw…the concept of “it has to be my way.” His tactics include, cutting corners, looking for fast opportunities, taking advantage of others, self-serving, willingness to harm or hurt, others, false allegiance, a deceitful heart, and a tendency to run away from consequences. Abel’s nature represents, work; meekness, trusting in nature, a willingness to follow the rules without cutting corners, or looking for fast opportunities, refuses to take advantage of others, not self- seeking, definitely willing to walk in Godly precepts, not willing to harm or hurt, clear about his allegiance, no deceit or guile in his heart, not in agreement with the deceitfulness of others. Thus, he suffers harm by the hand of another whose heart he failed to recognize. His flaw, immature, unprepared for the spiritual battles that come against him in human form. For centuries we have heard the story of these two brothers, and for centuries we have ignored the messages that are within. We continue to hold to a pattern that needs to be revaluated and perhaps discarded for our own good as well as that of those we love. Time is a valuable and delightful gift. God has given each of us a portion of it and we should treat it as a precious gift to be used to make wise choices that can change the hearts
• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
and lives of those we encounter along life’s journey. But unfortunately, so much of our individual time is focused on the frivolous “woe is me syndrome”. Our attention is too often drawn to the destructive mayhem in our society the “self- indulgent” concept, scheming and scamming, or to anything else that seems to feed the need for “self” focused temporary pleasures, without regard to the good of the whole society. We often to recognize that temporary pleasures bring dire consequences. Daily…our society tells us and shows us through its’ technological mediums just how far we have fallen into a state of wantonness. Many fail to see how a diminishing regard for life and authority has become paramount in our world. Killings are an everyday occurrence. Harden criminals walk the street free; they get away with unspeakable crimes while the innocent rot in our jails and prisons. Where are those who care enough to make laws that will help mankind as opposed to supporting efforts to destroy mankind? The rich get richer, the poor get poorer but the hearts of both seem to remain unchanged. Currently, we are facing the Covid-19 pandemic. Only God knows when it will become a thing of the past. For certain, Armageddon is on the way. It is looming on the horizon and will strike when God gives the command. Who will be able to stand? Where will the “self-willed” find their ultimate reward? Where will the Cains of this world stand? The power to defeat the spirit of Cain and embrace the spirit of Abel lies within each of us, but there is a force outside of ourselves that seeks to keep us preoccupied and in darkness. Too many of us listen too intently to that voice and give in to its force. Why, because it appeals to our senses and our emotions and has clouded our judgment. We’ve become as robots following what looks and sounds good, even though much of it is designed to destroy the very essence of who we were meant to be. The spirit of Abel with the wisdom of God as its guide, can move us all to a place of safety and love and unity. This spirit seeks peace and harmony and health. It is both loyal and giving. We all have a will of our own. Let’s use it to defeat the Cain that rises up only to destroy us. Christ told us in John 10:10, “The thief cometh not but to kill, steal and destroy, but I have come that they (you and me) might have life and have it more abundantly” (emphasis mine). We must not allow our “self-will” to hinder us from continually standing against and defeating the Cain nature within.
