STORY
MONTH 2024

I am delighted to welcome you to the Fifth Annual Women’s History Month Symposium! This year’s symposium returns to all-in-person programming for the frst time since our frst symposium in 2019. We’ve come full circle as we commemorate the pioneering, courageous women of our past and honor the equally heroic women of today. And yes, that includes you!

Today our focus will be to “Reimagine the Possibilities,” and I am absolutely thrilled that we will kick-start our day with a conversation between First Lady Dawn Flythe Moore and Secretary of Appointments Tisha Edwards. Maryland’s frst Black frst lady is a graduate of our sister institution, the University of Maryland, College Park, and has more than 20 years of experience in government relations, community organizing, and nonproft work. Along with her work in fostering economic development and championing the arts, the frst lady is just as passionate about empowering women as we are! Secretary Edwards is an alumnus of our School of Social Work and Maryland Carey Law and a longtime member of the UMB Foundation, Inc. Board of Trustees. She is a public servant and leader for equity and justice; in her 20-plus years working in Baltimore’s public and private sectors, Tisha has dedicated her life to removing the racial inequities that have historically prevented Black and Brown families from fulflling their potential.

Next, choose one of four breakout workshops: Take a deep dive into turning your strengths into your superpower; fnd out how to not let the brushback pitch take you out of the game; embrace your curiosity and fnd more joy; or develop strategies for introverted leadership. You can’t go wrong with any of these engaging sessions.

We will then all come back together for lunch and a freside chat with our afternoon keynote speaker Shanna Hocking. Shanna is a leadership development and fundraising strategy consultant and author of “One Bold Move a Day.” I will talk with Shanna about the meaningful actions we can all take to fulfll our leadership and career potential. And 100 attendees will receive a copy of Shanna’s book during the social hour!

Afterward, I will announce the three deserving women who will receive our fourth annual UMBrella Awards: Champion of the Year; Person of the Year — Leading the Way; and Person of the Year — On the Rise. These women exemplify the spirit of UMBrella and work hard to support the success of women at UMB.

Next, we will take a few deep breaths and reimagine the possibilities for self-care. Mindfulness expert Kathy Flaminio will lead us through a series of mind-body strategies to focus on our minds, bodies, and hearts. Those of you who have attended previous Women’s History Month symposiums will remember Kathy, and I am thrilled to welcome her back to UMB for the third time!

All good things must come to an end, and so must our Women’s History Month Symposium. But I look forward to chatting with you all during our social hour. Please stick around to see old friends, make new ones, get your book signed, have a bite to eat, and raise your glass to women!

On behalf of UMBrella, I thank you for joining us today and for the contributions you will make to UMB and society in the years ahead.

Dawn Flythe Moore is the first lady of the state of Maryland. With more than 20 years of leadership experience in government relations, nonprofit work, building corporate partnerships, community organizing, campaign strategy, and fundraising, she is passionate about empowering women, fostering economic opportunity, and championing the arts.

She has held positions in the highest levels of state government and has served on the boards of nonprofit organizations including Maryland’s State Theatre, Baltimore Center Stage, and iMentor, which partners with high schools in communities where the majority of students served will be firstgeneration college graduates. She also served as chair of the Moore-Miller Inaugural Committee, whose inclusive efforts contributed to a reported 30 percent to 40 percent increase in business for Black-owned businesses during the week of Gov. Wes Moore’s inauguration, supported 34 jobs with minority-, women- and locally owned businesses, and generated more than $1.5 million in labor income.

The first lady and Governor Moore together established the Moore Family Foundation to make impact grants to local nonprofits, provide thought leadership and organizational support, and create partnership alliances with community stakeholders, government entities, and other philanthropic partners that are committed to place-based initiatives in Baltimore. Under her leadership, the Moore Family Foundation has invested strategically in education, community enrichment, health research and development, veterans organizations, and the arts.

BREAKOUT WORKSHOP

“Finding Your Confidence (And Not Letting the Brushback Pitch Take You Out of the Game)”

Traditional résumés highlight accomplishments but conceal the setbacks that occurred along the way. As a result, the résumés of our role models can often be intimidating, and similar success may seem unattainable, especially at moments of failure. When you consider additional social and cultural complexities, such as those often experienced by women in male-dominated career fields, it can be hard to find your confidence. Kerri Phillips will discuss her path to learning to cultivate confidence, the social phenomena that affected that journey, and strategies to grow your confidence.

Location: SMC Campus Center, Room 351

PRESENTER

Kerri B. Phillips, PhD, MSE

Kerri Phillips is the chief scientist of the Air and Missile Defense Sector at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, where she advises on strategic technical direction, science and technology initiatives, and novel applications of technologies to address critical warfighting needs. Prior to her current appointment, Phillips served as program area manager for Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance and Targeting (ISR&T), focusing on developing, prototyping, and transitioning state-of-the-art capabilities to revolutionize ISR&T in the U.S. military. She also served as the program manager for hypersonic weapons, working closely with the U.S. Department of Defense to support the rapid development and fielding of hypersonic systems.

Phillips is a subject matter expert in missile guidance and control, and her technical contributions to innovative guidance algorithms earned her a Letter of Recognition from the Missile Defense Agency. Phillips earned dual bachelor’s degrees in aerospace and mechanical engineering and a PhD in aerospace engineering from West Virginia University and a master’s degree in systems engineering from Johns Hopkins University.

BREAKOUT WORKSHOP

“Embrace

Your Curiosities and Experience More Joy: How Identifying and Indulging Your Curiosities Promotes More Joyful Living”

Sometimes we feel like flat, one-dimensional versions of ourselves. Our sense of joy and wonder gives way to boxes checked, deadlines met, and endless lists of things to do. Day-to-day demands, periods of personal/professional challenge, and ongoing social uncertainties can dampen our states of joy, enthusiasm, well-being, and engagement. The good news is that our curiosities are powerful resources in reacquainting with our joy. This workshop explores the joy/curiosity connection and how intentionality in identifying and indulging our curiosities inspires more joyful living.

Location: HSHSL, T. Sue Gladhill Board Room (fifth floor)

PRESENTER

Vanessa Carroll, MS

Vanessa Carroll recently retired after a 10-year career at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, where she served most recently as special assistant to the dean at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. Prior to that she was director of special projects in the Dean’s Office at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. In retirement, Carroll serves as a consultant in the nonprofit arena, where she has enjoyed a 20-plus-year executive-level career. She is certified as an integrative health coach and maintains a rewarding practice as a strategic thought partner for boards and executives of regional service organizations.

Carroll’s curiosity style is “Explorer.” While her lifelong passion for indulging her curiosities may have created a few awkward moments for family and friends, she proudly boasts participation in an archaeological dig of the slave quarters at the Montpelier home of James and Dolley Madison, fencing lessons (as a woman of a certain age), officiating a wedding, meeting the Dalai Lama, and taking Thai cooking classes in Thailand, among her long, eccentric list of joy-inspiring experiences.
