WELCOME

I’m thrilled to welcome you to the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s 2019 Women’s History Month celebration. UMB has long taken part in this annual celebration that commemorates the pioneering, courageous women of our past and honors the equally heroic women of today. But this year marks a special new chapter as we expand our typical 90-minute celebration to a daylong symposium, jam-packed with workshops designed to give women tools and strategies to be catalysts for change in their lives and careers. Do you need to enhance your negotiating or storytelling skills? Learn how to be more authentic? Recognize gender-based violence or implicit bias? We have a workshop for you, led by female experts in their fields. Two guest speakers, Mei Xu, MA, founder and CEO of Chesapeake Bay Candle, and Duilia de Mello, PhD, MS, vice provost at Catholic University of America, will expand your knowledge as well. And then, after the breakout sessions, the whole group of attendees will reunite for an experiential workshop to integrate what you have learned into simple mind-body practices. I am confident it will be a meaningful experience for all of you, as the women of today propel this University, our state, nation, and world toward true equality, inclusion, and opportunity. On behalf of The UMBrella Group, which was formed in 2015 to support the success of women at UMB and whose members organized today’s event, we thank you for your participation in this celebration and for the contributions you will make to society in the years ahead. Sincerely, Jennifer B. Litchman, MA Senior Vice President for External Relations Special Assistant to the President Founder & Chair, UMBrella University of Maryland, Baltimore
