2012 Leadership Conference: Serving on the Front Lines of Delta June 8-10, 2012 • Houston, Texas

Welcome from the Supreme Basileus Greetings Brothers, THE LONE STAR STATE AWAITS YOU! The Brothers of the South Western region have made preparation for you to join them in beautiful Houston, June 8-10, 2012. The theme of the 2nd Leadership Conference is Serving on the Front Lines of Delta. This theme represents the need for Delta Phi Upsilon to begin to take her rightful place on the forefront of the battleground, in the fight against HIV/AIDS, legislative and social discrimination and the myriad of other ills which we face daily. Brothers, we will excite, ignite and energize our members as we prepare them to lead in their respective regions and beyond. We will fellowship, excel through presentations, workshops and interactive dialogue, while learning how to put our best face forward, build upon our strong foundation of brotherhood and set our standards high as we train the next generation of Delta leaders. We will also take time to bond with our Brothers, beginning on Friday, June 8, with the welcome reception, hosted by the Iota Chapter and ending on Sunday, June 10, with the Executive Director’s White Shirt Brunch. Along with traditional registration by mail, we are embracing technology with the introduction of online registration, which can be accessed via the restricted section of www.dphiu.org or directly at www.2012lc. eventbrite.com. Be sure to utilize the Early Bird Registration, for a $10 discount on your registration fee and take the opportunity to purchase the 2011 Constitution and Bylaws. We are also pleased to offer late registration for those unable to take advantage of the lower cost savings. Registrations may be paid by chapter check, certified/cashiers check, money order, credit card or Paypal®. PERSONAL CHECKS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AND THERE IS NO ON-SITE REGISTRATION. This year, we have chosen to not use an official host hotel, but you are encouraged to use the beautiful Courtyard Houston by The Galleria hotel. Reservations can be made by calling (866) 506-5782. Get Ready, Get Set and Come to the 2012 Leadership Conference. We look forward to seeing you! Kendrick T. Clack, RN BSN Supreme Basileus

2012 Leadership Conference: Serving on the Front Lines of Delta June 8-10, 2012 • Houston, Texas

Welcome from the Conference Chairman Most Esteemed Brothers, It brings me great honor and gratitude to serve as the conference chair for this, our second Leadership Conference. As I look back over the last three years of my membership in this organization I am reminded of the trials and tribulations, the sacrifices and the disagreements but I am also reminded of the pride, commitment, and unity that comes with being a brother of this esteemed organization. Ours is a fraternity comprised of college-minded, collegeeducated men that through such scholarship, embody the skills and talents necessary to move our organization forward. This Leadership Conference has been planned with the hope that you will leave this weekend empowered and ready to storm the Front Lines for Delta. This Leadership Conference represents many things. It represents the blessings of loyalty to one another, it represents the quest for the keys to be the saviors of our fraternity, and it represents that we know that our sights should be focused on the future. So, as we embark on a weekend of friendship, we access the annals of leadership to provide the vision necessary to be the pre-eminent Greek Lettered Organization comprised primarily of Gay men of color for the advancement of Service to Our Kind. This weekend will provide opportunities for communication and learning. We must approach the weekend with this understanding. We must be willing to provide thoughtful and useful commentary, understanding and respecting the ideas of others. As we reconnect with the heart of Delta Phi Upsilon, we must aspire to be the best while resting on the laurels of the lubricant that maintains our fraternity. Exposure to our new method for program planning requires dedication for faithful execution; we must, therefore, trust that every man embodies the spirit of brotherhood. Considering our namesake, we must exploit the wisdom of the past to bring about a change in spirit, in love, and in human relations that will complete our trinity. Delta Phi Upsilon is a Brotherhood comprised of trendsetters in the gay communities that we serve and live in. We must hold ourselves accountable to this ideal. With courage, we have made strides towards improvement. Through discretion we have made gains in membership attainment. We must focus our aspirations on retention, we must refocus our efforts on the building blocks of our organization. We must look to the motto that binds our hearts to eradicate the judgment and discrimination that ails us all. We do this by living out loud, earnestly. This way, my dear brothers, our hard work will not be in vain. The culture and merit we infuse into our communities will allow us to claim the victory we earned with honesty. Welcome back to Houston brothers, and welcome back to the Service of Delta; we can conquer the blocks in the way of our inevitable greatness. I hope this weekend will go down in history as a historic battle victory. Rendering Service without Expectation, Brother David Cornell Butler, Jr., MA Leadership Conference Chairman

2012 Leadership Conference: Serving on the Front Lines of Delta June 8-10, 2012 • Houston, Texas

Welcome to Houston: Host City The Delta Train is preparing to make a stop in Houston, Texas, as the city and its multitude of Deltas play host to the 2012 Leadership Conference. With a population of 2.1 million people within an area of 579 square miles, Houston, the seat of Harris County and the economic center of Houston–Sugar Land– Baytown, is the sixth-largest metropolitan area in the U.S. Houston was founded in 1836 on land near the banks of Buffalo Bayou. It was incorporated as a city on June 5, 1837, and named after then-President of the Republic of Texas—former General Sam Houston—who had commanded at the Battle of San Jacinto, which took place 25 miles east of where the city was established. The city has a population from various ethnic and religious backgrounds and a large and growing international community. It is home to many cultural institutions and exhibits, which attract more than 7 million visitors a year to the Museum District. Houston has an active visual and performing arts scene in the Theater District and offers year-round resident companies in all major performing arts, including the Urban Souls Dance Company, headed by our very own 2nd Supreme Anti-Basileus, Harrison J. Guy. Houston is one of few United States cities with permanent, professional, resident companies in all major performing arts disciplines: opera, ballet, music, and theater. Many annual events celebrate the diverse cultures of Houston. The largest and longest running is the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, held over 20 days from late February to early March, which happens to be the largest annual Livestock Show and Rodeo anywhere in the world. Another large celebration is the annual night-time Houston Pride Parade, held at the end of June. Other annual events include the Houston Greek Festival, Art Car Parade, the Houston Auto Show, the Houston International Festival, and the Bayou City Art Festival, which is considered to be one of the top five art festivals in the United States. Let’s not forget Houston Splash, an annual event that attracts thousands of GLBT participants from around the globe. Houston received the official nickname of “Space City” in 1967 because it is the location of NASA’s Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. Other nicknames often used by locals include “Bayou City,” “Magnolia City,” and “H-Town.”

Some Thoughts on Leadership Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.

Absolute identity with one’s cause is the first and great condition of successful leadership.

— John F. Kennedy

— Woodrow Wilson

It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur. You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership.

I light my candle from their torches. — Robert Burton
