Lighting may not only deter human intruders, but also it can scare away animals. A raccoon, skunk or opossum may think twice about hanging around your home when your property is bathed in a spotlight. When drafting a to-do list for home improvements that can increase home value and appeal, several renovations may be atop homeowners’ lists. While kitchen or bathroom remodels may be popular renovations, homeowners also should consider outdoor lighting schemes that can make homes safer and more alluring.
To get started, homeowners should first examine the exteriors of their homes and make note of existing lighting and where improvements can be made. If you’re not sure where to begin, speak with an electrician or a landscape designer, each of whom can offer suggestions on lighting and which options are the best fit for your particular property.
Outdoor lighting serves various purposes. Such lighting can draw attention to more impressive parts of a property. In addition, such lighting can improve security and deter criminals.
Next, you’ll want to consider efficiency and function. The United States Department of Energy suggests incorporating energy-efficient lighting, including energy-saving LED bulbs or
fluorescent lights, into your plans. Timers and other automatic controls can prevent waste by turning lights on only when they are needed. Solar lights can be used as accent lights, further saving energy.

When addressing aesthetics, think about the appeal of an accented landscape. Include lights to frame the front door and call attention to certain elements, such as decorative trees or water features. Use lights to light up deck stairways or to accent planters. Speak with a lighting professional about how to position lights to cover the most territory in the most attractive way possible.

Safety Safety is an important consideration when improving a home. Lighting can help illuminate potential hazards or draw attention to borders or property boundaries. Navigating in the dark can be treacherous, so put lights along pathways and near pools or spas. Be sure that lights will clearly mark other walkways around your home, such as those leading from doors to the yard or from the garage to where trash and recycling pails are kept. If a design element such as a bridge over a water feature or a particular ornamental tree or shrub is difficult to navigate in the
dark, use lights to improve visibility.
Security Added security is another reason to install more exterior lighting. Dark homes are attractive to burglars. Eliminate dark corners by lighting up areas where thieves may be able to gain access to your home.

Improve your
home’s energy efficiency with these smart
winterizing tips
Cooler temperatures and shorter days can only mean one thing — winter is on its way. January and February are typically considered the coldest months in the Northwest, Northeast and Midwest regions of the United States. It can be tough for homeowners to stay cozy inside without running up monthly heating costs. Building professionals say fall is the ideal time to consider winterizing your home for a more energy efficient and comfortable winter.
Look for simple, affordable fixes. There are some simple, inexpensive measures that homeowners can do to ensure their homes remain energy efficient, warm and comfortable. For less than $100, weather-stripping for windows, a door sweep strip and some caulking can help fill any air leaks to limit energy loss. Replacing the furnace’s air filter every three months can also help create a more comfortable environment
since a clogged filter can reduce the unit’s overall efficiency and lifespan.
Set the temperature. Investing in a programmable thermostat allows homeowners to monitor the indoor temperature of their home remotely via a smart phone or online. Keeping the temperature low when no one is home and programming the thermostat to increase the temperature when everyone arrives home, annual heating costs can be
available from Icynene, works well in all climates and fills in gaps and cracks to help stop air leakage as well as ice dams formation.
Prevent ice damming.
As a long-term solution, spray foam insulation helps maintain a comfortable temperature year round while helping to control monthly heating and cooling expenses. Thanks to spray foam insulation’s air-sealing qualities, homeowners can reduce the size of their heating and cooling equipment since less effort is required to heat or cool the home.
If ice damming on the roof is an annual problem, consider taking measures to completely stop dams from forming. Major damage can result from ice damming, so it’s never too early to start thinking about a long-term solution. Ice damming occurs when warm, indoor air escaping through the roof melts snow on the shingles. The water then refreezes as it runs off the roof, creating a barrier of ice at the edge. Shovelling snow or chipping ice away can threaten life, limb and roof, so it’s best to consider more permanent solutions.
Keep warm air inside. While weather-stripping and caulking can help address air leakage, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Home Energy Saver website says that proper air sealing insulation and attic venting are the best methods to stop ice damming from occurring. Spray foam insulation is a modern solution that both insulates and seals to help stop ice damming. Installed by licensed professionals, spray foam insulation, like that
While air leakage can play a role in higher-than-average heating and cooling bills, a well-insulated home and economical winterizing can help you get through the cold winter months. Homeowners can learn the five easy steps of selecting the right insulation for their home on icynene.com.

Entertaining at home is a fun and convenient way to get together with friends and family. Entertaining at home is less expensive than renting out a venue or hitting the town, and party hosts know the amenities they have available to them. Although convenient, home entertaining also requires more work on the part of the event host, including readying the house for company. But with some creative thinking and a little sweat equity, hosts can throw an enjoyable and memorable get-together from the comforts of their own homes. Begin by going room-by-room and making note of what will need to be done. If you’ve entertained at home before, you may have a mental inventory of what worked and what didn’t, so make changes accordingly this time around. Focus only on the spaces where guests will congregate, such as the living room, den, kitchen, and dining area. Develop a decluttering plan to remove items from entertaining spaces and store them safely away. A little bit of clutter can make a space seem unruly and unclean. Move delicate items, such as collectibles, to a storage location, returning them to their

to tidy the house and then tackle deep cleaning room by room. Remove anything you do not want your guests to see. One or two inquisitive guests may check behind the shower curtain or even open up the medicine cabinet, so remove personal or potentially sensitive items. Recruit help to ready your home or even assist you on the day of the party. A cleaning service can make fast work of scouring the house, while a waitstaff can help serve food and keep drinks refilled, enabling you to mingle with guests. If the idea of cooking for all of your guests is overwhelming, hire a caterer to provide the food. Stock up on stain removal products to tackle the inevitable spills. While you no doubt hope to keep your house as clean as possible, expect some dropped food or spilled drinks. Keep a cleaner at the ready so you can quickly combat stains and guests can continue having a good time. The more complicated the party is, the more time you will need to prepare your home. Afford yourself ample time to prepare so you are not feeling rushed come the day of the party. DE15B396

FARMHOUSE (406-44) LIVING SPACE: 1,206 SF
A compact, but fun-filled home away from home, or a wonderful little starter home, the Farmhouse (406-44) has 988 square feet on the main level and a 215 square feet loft area for storage and sleeping (if approved by building official).
Farmhouse
The Farmhouse is an ideal retreat at the beach, mountains or even on a small city lot. The home features two good-sized bedrooms, a bath, and a stacked washer/dryer unit in space provided just off the kitchen. The living/dining area has a vaulted ceiling, which is not only attractive but also creates a spacious and airy atmosphere. A steep slope roof with a decorative gable window accents the classically simple exterior. The gable window enhances the interior as well by allowing the sunshine to penetrate, providing warmth and light. The exterior is illustrated with vertical board and batt. If a horizontal siding is used, particularly on the lower level, a more formal design would result. Yet another distinctly attractive appearance could be created with brick. A large deck sweeps across the front and partially down one side, creating a wonderful place for summertime lazing and dining as well as space for venting creative energies with potted flowers and herbs. The Farmhouse is a beautiful little home that is packed with features to make living more enjoyable. If a small home or a vacation home is your desire, then the Farmhouse is the place to start.
