Designed by I Fromkin Interiors and captured by Peter Rymwid, the kitchen features maple cabinetry painted white, a honed black granite countertop and an island with under-counter cubbyhole wine storage and a glass-door wine refrigerator.

From modest to magnificent: Create an entertainment space for any home

Entertaining at home? Whatever you’re planning — big bash or intimate soirée, cheery beer fest or elegant wine tasting — an inviting and accessible built-in bar featuring handsome hardwood cabinetry can help transform mundane household space into the life of the party. And once the festivities are over, all the accouterments such as glasses and silverware, not to mention wine, liquor and mixers, can be stored in those cabinets, either displayed behind glass or hidden by solid wood doors. “Today, the term ‘built-in bar’ covers a variety of possible set ups,” says Linda Jovanovich, of the American

Hardwood Information Center at www.HardwoodInfo.com. At its simplest, a bar may occupy the end of a kitchen island — nothing more than a short length of dedicated countertop above a neat grid of cubbyholes to store wine and a small fridge to cool it when necessary. Slightly more ambitious bars comprise a niche or doorless closet fitted with wood shelves and cabinets, a countertop and perhaps a faucet and sink. Then there are more imposing affairs, the modern equivalent of a traditional butler’s pantry, fully plumbed stations where not only drinks, but also finger foods and hors d’oeuvres can be prepared and served. Finally, there are dedicated sit-down bars. Complete with stools, behind-counter serving space, and semi-professional equipment, these pull-up-a-chair facilities have special requirements that take them beyond our present consideration. “Many houses and apartments have a closet or unused space that can easily be converted into an attractive and useful built-in bar,” says Laura Bohn, a New Yorkbased interior designer who has done this for several clients over the years. “If you live in a house with stairs, the space beneath them is often an ideal place to install a small, modestly equipped drinks center. It should be able to accommodate enough countertop to prepare cocktails, enough storage for a liquor cabinet, and maybe enough room for a fridge or wine cooler.” A sink is not an absolute necessity, but if the small space you requisition is near a kitchen, powder room, laundry or bathroom, you may be able to make use of the existing plumbing and create a true wet bar. As Bohn notes, one advantage of using such confined spaces for built-in bars is that they can be closed off when not in use, so that a commandeered closet looks just like a closet, an appropriated staircase just like a staircase. “But a well-designed, well-crafted hardwood mini-bar needn’t be hidden,” she adds. “Made of walnut, cherry or some other distinctive wood — my favorite is maple — it can be an integral and pleasing a part of the décor.” Of course, larger butler’s pantry-style built-in bars cannot be hidden. Ideally, they are located discreetly in transitional spaces between kitchens and adjacent dining or living rooms. But in today’s more open-plan houses, such built-in bars, often dubbed buffets, are likely to be in either the kitchen or living area itself — wall-spanning installations that are on full public view and should therefore look as elegant as pieces of fine hardwood furniture. “Walnut is very popular right now

for this type of bar,” says Christine Donner, a kitchen designer in New Canaan, Connecticut. “It is an elegant wood and its cool tones complement the white-and-silver palette that my clients currently favor. It can be bleached to a lighter tone, left natural, or stained much darker, almost all the way to black. Limed oak, bleached to a lovely honey-blonde color, has a marvelous midcentury-modern feel that is slowly catching on, too.” For Donner, functionality is as important as aesthetics. “Wine connoisseurs often have an extensive collection of varietal-specific glasses that they want displayed, so I get asked a lot for glass-fronted cabinets with interior lighting,” she says. “Much of this stemware is oversize or extra tall, so I make sure the shelves can accommodate their height. And I always include solid-door cabinets to stow motley collections of assorted liquor bottles.” Fine hardwood cabinetry can also be used to conceal icemakers, refrigerators, bottlecooling drawers, dishwashers and other unsightly appliances and equipment “A small bar sink is also very useful,” Donner continues. “Less for the water coming out of the spout than as a place to dump out old drinks or melted ice.” Loading up your built-in bar with such practical, laborsaving features will free you up to enjoy your own party to the fullest. And that, surely, is the point of the exercise. Visit www.HardwoodInfo.com to learn more about cabinetry for built-in bars and other products made from American hardwoods.

Independent third party EnergyStar compliance audits and on-site inspections guarantee that every VEI home meets the rigorous EnergyStar 3.0 standards. Make yourself the center of attention at

Sterling Springs in York County.

Historic Yorktown is a happening place. Not just because you can tour the battlefield and surrounding areas where British General Charles Cornwallis formally surrendered to American and French forces to end the American Revolution, but also because of what’s going on there now. In addition to the shops and restaurants along the shores of the York River, there’s almost always something going on to amuse and entertain visitors. In October alone you can experience “Rhythms on the Riverwalk” concerts, the Yorktown Wine Festival, Yorktown Market Days and Fall Festival Celebration, a performance by The Deep River Junior Ancient Fife & Drum Corps, Yorktown Day and live entertainment regularly at Water Street Grille.

County. Sterling Springs is a neighborhood of quality homes built by VEI Homes—a locally owned, family operated business that is recognized by buyers as one of the best values in new construction when it comes to pricing, quality, flexibility and providing premium features as standards.

Who wouldn’t want to be in the middle of all that fun and excitement? You can be if you move to Sterling Springs in York

Sterling Springs has become such an incredibly popular choice because of its convenient location not only to Historic

All the lots at Sterling Springs back up to common areas and some lots have the Newport News watershed behind them, so it’s not only a beautiful location, it’s also a very calming setting. The neighborhood is built around three cul-de-sacs without any through-streets and there is a neighborhood playground, so it’s also a well-protected place for kids and families to enjoy the serene outdoors.

Yorktown but is also close to excellent hospitals and military facilities as well as an incredible selection of shopping, dining, entertainment and educational opportunities, in addition to easy access to Newport News Park. Historic Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, Patrick Henry Mall and Newport News Airport are all just minutes away, yet the neighborhood is surprisingly secluded. In other words, York County is a terrific place for families to live. York County has one of the lowest tax rates in Hampton Roads when it comes to property tax, service charges, sales tax, fees on special services and other taxes. In fact, Yorktown is rated as second in the area (behind Williamsburg) for livability by areavibes. com, based on low crime rates, high graduation rates, employment, sunny weather and a stable housing market.

Additionally, York County is ranked 5th in the state by countyhealthrankings. org, based on factors such as quality of life, health behaviors, clinical care, social and economic factors, and physical environment. And, according to a recent national survey released by SmartAsset, a financial technology company that tracks national real estate and financial trends, York County is rated as the fifth-happiest county in the entire nation. Yes, in the whole United States. But the true beauty of Sterling Springs is in the living spaces. All of the homes at Sterling Springs are built to EnergyStar 3.0 specifications, which means your home is tightly sealed to ensure good air quality. Plus, you don’t have to worry about high energy costs when it comes to heating (this summer) and cooling (when winter

If you’re not ready to make your move just yet, there are eight lots still open and VEI Homes is well known for modifying plans on new construction to accommodate a buyer’s specific needs or requests. For example, if a buyer needs handicap accessibility in their new home, the builder can widen doorways, adjust counter heights and push out walls to increase mobility spaces. VEI Homes has an in-house designer who is available to help make your home the perfect home for you. Either way, with six models to choose from, you’ll be sure to find a home to accommodate your family’s needs. VEI Homes will pay up to $4,000 in buyer’s closing costs when using the builder’s approved preferred lenders—Johnson Mortgage and USAA. Come for a visit from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., Friday through Monday. The best (and worst) foods for

heart health

No one wants to hear from their doctors that they have joined the millions of people across the globe to be diagnosed with heart disease. The Heart Foundation reports that heart disease, which includes diseases of the heart and cardiovascular system and stroke, is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States, affecting both men and women and most racial/ ethnic groups. Heart disease also is one of the leading causes of death in Canada, claiming more than 33,000 lives per year. Many factors contribute to the development of heart disease, including smoking, lack of exercise and stress. Diet and whether a person is overweight or obese also can have a direct link to heart health. Diet, particularly for

those with diabetes and poorly controlled blood sugar levels, is a major concern. A variety of foods are considered helpful for maintaining a strong and healthy heart and cardiovascular system, while others can contribute to conditions that may eventually lead to cardiovascular disease or cardiac arrest. Moderation enables a person to sample a little of everything, but not to make any one food a habit. The following are some foods to promote heart health and some foods you might want to avoid.

Good • Tree nuts: Tree nuts contain unsaturated fats that can help lower LDL cholesterol (the bad stuff) and improve

HDL (the good stuff). Nuts also are a filling source of protein and other healthy nutrients. • Whole grains: Whole grains contain complex carbohydrates for energy, as well as protein and fiber. Fiber can help scrub cholesterol from the blood, lowering bad cholesterol levels. • Fatty fish: Many coldwater, fatty fish, such as halibut, herring and salmon, contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are heart-healthy. Omega3s also can be found in walnuts, flaxseed and some soy products. • Beans: Beans and other legumes are an excellent source of protein and can be a stand-in for meats that are high in saturated fat. Beans also contain cholesterol-lowering soluble fiber and folate, which can reduce blood homocystein levels. The Bean Institute reports that consuming beans may reduce cholesterol levels by roughly six to 10 percent. · Yogurt: Researchers in Japan found yogurt may protect against gum disease. Left untreated, gum disease may elevate a person’s risk for heart disease. Yogurt contains good bacteria that can

· Red meats: Enjoying a steak is probably not as bad as eating a deep-fried brownie, but it’s best to limit red meat consumption to about 10 percent or less of your diet. Red meats can have a considerable amount of cholesterol, saturated fat and calories. · Added sugars: Sugar can increase blood pressure and triglyceride levels. Sugar often hides out in foods that you would not associate with the sweetener. Plus, many people unwittingly consume too much sugar simply through sugarsweetened beverages and ready-to-eat cereals. · Salty foods: Leave the salt shaker in the spice cabinet and opt for herbs for flavoring, advises the American Heart Association. High-sodium diets often are to blame for hypertension, a major risk factor for heart disease. · Dairy: Artery-clogging saturated fat also can be found in dairy products, particularly the full-fat versions. Butter, sour cream and milk can be problematic when people overindulge. Opt for low-fat dairy when possible.

Embrace the wonders of wireless at

home

Data from the Consumer Electronics Association, CTIA and U.S. Census Bureau paint a picture of just how immersed in new technology society has become. Statistics indicate the typical home of 2.6 people has an average of 24 electronic gadgets in use, including one or more smartphones. These devices include eReaders, HDTVs, laptops, tablets, printers, digital cameras, DVRs, Bluetooth speakers, portable GPS devices, and more. To meet the demands of all of these devices, some homes need an electronics overhaul, including beefing up the capabilities of Internet connections and wireless networks. Many WiFi routers claim to be capable of supporting as many as 255 connected devices. While this is theoretically possible, having that many devices on a standard home wireless router can compromise how well a network works. The results may include slow Internet browsing abilities, long lag time and even connection interference or droppage. When considering renovation projects around the home, it may be worth it to pay attention to electronic devices and their connectivity.

Start with the router The wireless router in your home is a technological workhorse. When the router goes down, your devices follow suit. Without a router you will not be able to access the digital signal from your Internet Service Provider and send it out to all of your devices. Many older routers broadcast on a 2.4GHz signal, the same as many other radio devices. Crowding on the 2.4GHz spectrum could cause slowdown during the busiest times of the day for Internet traffic. It may be worth it to invest in a new router that can search for other channels that have less traffic and broadcast through them.

Test your speed Relatively inexpensive software can show you your Internet speed numbers to see if your connection is meeting the speeds promised by your ISP. If your speed is slow when tested at various times in a

given day, you may want to upgrade your service package to a faster service plan. If the speed is adequate, you can invest in some other options.

Get new hardware Routers should be placed in a central location so that the signal can be accessed throughout the house. But router placement may depend on where your cable or fiber optic lines enter the home. If router signal interference seems suspect in slower connections, hardware, such as a greaterrange antenna, wireless access points, and wireless repeaters can help expand your

router signal throughout the house. Speak with a wireless network expert about the options that may be best for your home. Another consideration is a Wi-Fi plug that uses existing electrical circuits in a home to expand the signals offered by the router.

Expand your gadget list Once a wireless signal is verified and confirmed as adequate, you may be interested in additional

devices that can tap into the wireless network and make your home run more efficiently. Manufacturers now offer everything from wireless door locks that can be controlled with a smartphone to wireless flash memory cards that can easily transfer photos from a camera to computer to wireless lighting control throughout the entire house. With wireless speakers, you can instantly beam music to any number of units in a home or use a NAS

(network attached storage) drive as a backup for photos, videos and other large files. Technology is changing the way people utilize their homes. Making sure a wireless network is up to par can make using devices easier and more efficient.

VERA (404-07) LIVING SPACE: 1,926 SF

A wide lot is required to build the 1,926 square foot Vera (404-07). The configuration of this exciting new floor design has the isolated master suite on the left side of the house and the secondary bedrooms on the right. With the common areas in the middle, privacy is assured not only for the occupants of the master suite, but those in the other bedrooms as well. This arrangement will be especially beneficial to a family with high school students needing their own “space”, or one with aging parents sharing the home.

Vera

Dignified columns frame the recessed entry and compliment the attractive brick and siding exterior of the Vera. The expansive master suite includes among its numerous amenities, a huge walk-in closet, raised television shelf and a private bathroom with twin basins. This end of the house also contains a large storage area with access to the three-car garage, and a handy utility room with a sink and built-in ironing board. Pull-down stairs in the garage take you up to an attic with an additional 480 square feet of storage capacity. The up-to-date kitchen, easy to maneuver around in, features an island cook top, walk-in pantry, appliance center, built-in desk and a bright breakfast nook. The formal dining room with a beautiful built-in hutch, and the front living room, both have a coffered vault ceiling. When entertaining your guests in the comfortable living room, a combination gas/wood fireplace will keep everyone nice and cozy regardless of the conditions outside. A sky lit hallway leads to the secondary bedrooms. They are both good-sized and have plenty of windows along with ample closet space. The smaller of the two has a built-in file cabinet, and with the addition of a desk and computer, can easily be converted for use as a home office. Nearby are two spots for linen storage and a full bathroom with twin basins.
