As life gets busier, a bedroom becomes more than a sleeping space — it’s an escape to a calmer, more serene world that rests the mind as well as the body. To create your own inhouse getaway, use these easy tips to “calm-ify” your bedroom and transform it into a more beautiful and restful retreat. Sink into some silence. Create white noise to block out sounds that disturb the solitude. Install a stylish ceiling fan with gently whirring blades to give the room a languid, tropical ambiance that will help you relax. Paint the room green. Studies show green has a calming effect when used as a main color for decorating. A recent homeowner study
conducted by Sherwin-Williams found that more than 60 percent of homeowners would consider adding shades of green into their home, with more than half saying they would use it to paint an entire room. “The color green is symbolic of balance, nature, spring and rebirth,” says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. “Because it has such positive connections in the mind, I especially like to see Gallery Green (SW 0015) used in spaces seeking balance and harmony, such as bedrooms.” Add fresh houseplants. Living things, like leafy or flowering plants, make a bedroom feel more down to
earth. Visit your local garden center and purchase a variety of houseplants, large or small, to freshen the air. Fluff up your bedding. Give your bed a fresh new look and feel. Buy yourself some soft, cool white sheets. Add a featherlike, comfortable bedspread or quilt, and top it with multiple pillows of all shapes and sizes for a wellrested night’s sleep. Lower the lighting. Adjusting the lighting can completely alter the atmosphere in a bedroom. Install a light dimmer or add a programmable timer that turns lights off and on automatically, to help lull you to sleep, yet brighten the room when it’s time to get up.
Treat yourself to new window treatments. Add to the easy-breezy feel of the room by purchasing fresh, flowing curtains or sleek new blinds that can be easily adjusted to block out the daylight. Simplify for serenity’s sake. Eliminate clutter to keep it out of sight — and out of mind. Add cabinetry with built-in organization features like drawer inserts. Add more shelving in the closet. Use baskets and pottery to keep small items contained. Having everything in its place will help you feel free to relax in your beautiful new bedroom. Sherwin-Williams DIY Pulse Survey, Q1 2016.

outside entryways. Once doors are opened, insects can then fly right into your home. Keep exterior lights as far away from entryways as possible. If you need lights right outside your doors, install motionsensing lights that only turn on when you come within a few feet of the door. This reduces the volume of insects that congregate outside your entryways, and lowers the risk that insects will follow you in when you arrive home at night.
The dawn of spring marks the return of many things, including long hours of sunlight and warm temperatures in which to enjoy that sunshine. But homeowners know spring also marks the return of insects, unwelcome guests that can be difficult or expensive to control once they have entered a home. As problematic as insect infestations
can be, preventing such problems can be simple, especially when homeowners are proactive. The following are a handful of ways to keep insects out this spring and summer. ■ Consider potential food supplies and cut those supplies off. Insects often enter a home in search of food, so cutting off potential food supplies is a great way to prevent
insects from coming inside. Give dining areas a thorough cleaning after meals, vacuuming or sweeping the floors beneath dining tables each night before going to bed. (Parents of young children may want to sweep floors after each meal.) In addition, clean pets’ bowls each night to be sure there are no food scraps left that may entice insects,
and make sure pet food containers are tightly sealed after each serving. Sinks are another potential food source, so empty food traps after using the sink and run the garbage disposal as well to remove any food that might be lingering. ■ Address potential shelters. Insects also seek shelter inside homes, and there are many areas in a home that can provide adequate shelter. Cracks around windows and doors and in the foundation provide both entry
points and potential shelters for insects. Seal such cracks with caulk, testing the areas by feeling for any incoming air. If you still feel air coming in, there is still some sealing to do. Cracks in cabinets or counters also may provide shelter to insects, so address these areas as well. ■ Reconsider exterior lighting. Exterior lighting may be inviting insects into your home. Insects tend to congregate around lights at nighttime, so avoid placing lights right
■ React quickly upon seeing insects. Insect infestations happen gradually, so homeowners should react quickly when seeing a single insect or a handful of insects inside their homes. The slower your response, the more likely one or two intruders is likely to turn into a large infestation. Immediately clean any areas where you see insects, and take more substantial measures if your initial efforts were not enough to prevent more insects from coming in. The presence of insects inside a home can be a nuisance, but there are many ways to prevent such infestations and keep unwelcome guests at bay. SH162867

At parties Bingo is a fun way to entertain guests at various events, such as bridal showers, birthday parties or anniversary parties. While anyone can make his or her own bingo card grid, plenty of premade templates are available online. At parties, when the guest of honor opens gifts, party guests can mark off those items on their cards. Not only does the game keep guests engaged in the gift-opening process, but it also presents a way to give them trinkets and other prizes without guests having to do too much.
alternative ways of playing bingo have been introduced to increase the excitement and chances of winning. By modifying game play, everyone from teachers to students to party hosts to entertainment coordinators can expand bingo’s versatility.
In the classroom
An estimated $90 million is spent on bingo games each week in North America. What began as a humble county fair game using numbered discs and beans to mark cards has expanded to be one of the more beloved games — and fundraisers — of all time. Bingo attracts people of all ages. Bingo is usually won by compiling a pattern of numbers covered on a bingo card, typically vertically, horizontally or diagonally. However,
Teachers can use the game of bingo in their classrooms as an entertaining way to engage students. Bingo cards can be marked with just about any image or word to coincide with lessons. World Leader Bingo, for example, requires students to recognize and cover various world leader’s faces. Verb Conjugation Bingo can help foreign language students familiarize themselves with the various conjugates of common verbs. Teachers also can encourage students to come up with their own versions of bingo that they can play with fellow classmates and use during study sessions.
Depending on the audience, modify the bingo cards according to age and skill level. Young children may enjoy a birthday game of bingo with pictures printed on the cards instead of words.
In the workplace Employers often seek out ways to boost employee morale, and entertaining games and small gifts are one way to do just that. Raffle off baskets and other prizes while using bingo to lighten up the work atmosphere and keep employees happy. Dedicate one day each week for bingo play toward the end of the workday when everyone is winding down. Ask employees to gather at a central location or let them play at their desks, with numbers called over the office PA system. The first person to reach bingo must call out and have his or her card verified. Prizes can include a free day off from work, sports tickets or gift cards to a restaurant. Bingo has been entertaining players since its inception in 1929. Its versatility makes it a winner in any number of settings and applications. TF15C737

CYNTHIA (406-19) LIVING SPACE: 1,613 SF
The brick facade of the Cynthia (406-19) gives the home a warm, welcoming look. At 1,836 square feet, the interior provides an abundance of open living space. The covered porch opens into an entry. To the left is a door to the large den, where an elegant picture window graces formal entertaining. The back of the entertainment center provides an angular traffic diversion from the entry to the master suite and family room on the left, and the kitchen and the dining area on the right.
Cynthia
The master suite is on the opposite side of the home from the secondary bedrooms. Close to the entry and the family room, this is a private retreat with enough space for a king-sized bed, and several dressers. There is a large master bath with a skylight, double sinks, and an oversized shower. A large walk-in closet is conveniently located between the entry of the suite and the bath. The family room has a bay area filled with windows and patio doors leading to the deck. A large informal eating area ties the kitchen and family areas together with an eating bar. The kitchen is an unusual design. The range and oven are adjacent to the eating bar. Above the sink is a unique corner cabinet, or a knick-knack shelf. The garage opens to the utility room with a pre-wash sink and counter space for sorting and folding. From the utility room, the kitchen is across the hall and a full bath is down the hall. There is a linen closet in the bath next to the tub, along with one located in the hall. These are shared by the two bedrooms on either side. Each bedroom has its own closet, a large window, and one room has a built-in desk. Available for seasonal items is a storage closet located in this particular hallway. Home means comfort, happiness, family, and a sense of being welcome. The Cynthia provides all these with its spaciousness.
