Heavy snowfall that lingers for weeks or months, extreme temperatures, ice that thaws and then refreezes — Old Man Winter can be rough on your home’s hardscape. When the last vestiges of cold weather finally melt away, you can find yourself heading into spring with pitted driveways, cracked asphalt and crumbling landscaping. It’s important to make repairs before summer heats up and puts further stress on these important areas. Doing your own hardscape repairs isn’t difficult. You’ll save money, and doing it yourself gives you the opportunity to get some outdoor exercise this spring. Here are some hardscape features that commonly need a little TLC in the spring:
Asphalt driveways - Winter delivers the perfect mix of conditions to cause potholes, pits and cracks in asphalt surfaces. Wet, cold conditions work to weaken minute fissures, cracks and other flaws in an asphalt driveway. Add in the vehicles that travel
over it constantly — not to mention the occasional snow plow — and when spring arrives, your asphalt driveway could need some serious repair. While you may need pros to pour new asphalt, repairing existing asphalt is well within the abilities of most DIYers. For pothole repairs, start by sweeping and removing any loose materials from the area needing repair. Next, pour U.S. Cold Patch by Sakrete in the trouble spot and spread evenly to a depth of no more than 2 inches at a time. Use the back side of a shovel to compact the material, then, since there is no oily tracking with this material, just drive over it a few times with your vehicle. The compaction causes the product to cure into an effective patch. For deeper potholes, keep repeating in 2 inch amounts until completely filled.
Patios and pavers - Patio pavers and bricks can shift, sink or raise, and even crack

during a tough winter. If your patio has a sand underlay, fixing problems is relatively easy. For broken or cracked pavers, simply remove the damaged pieces, check that the sand is level, and fill the gap with a new paver or brick. If your patio has become uneven over time, you’ll need to lift all the uneven pavers, level the sand beneath — you may have to add sand — and then put the pavers back atop the now-level sand.
Concrete surfaces - Concrete is a common hardscape material around homes across the country. Concrete driveways, walkways and steps can all succumb to cracking, crumbling, chipping and spalling after a harsh winter. Fortunately, concrete is an easy material to fix, and patching a problem while it’s small may help prevent a much costlier repair or even replacement down the road. To repair cracks of virtually any size, simply apply an easy-to-use product like Sakrete Top’n Bond. Power wash cracks to remove debris. For larger fissures, it may be necessary to use a hammer and chisel to remove crumbling concrete and produce a clean, clearly delineated repair site. For resurfacing old, damaged or spalled concrete, Flo-Coat resurfacing material by Sakrete provides an easy alternative to costly replacement. Simply remove loose materials
from the surface, mix the material, dampen the concrete surface with water and pour the resurfacing material onto the concrete slab. Use a long-handled squeegee to spread the mixture evenly. Be sure to protect expansion and control joints with tape to prevent filling.
Retaining walls - Whether your brick, stone or cinderblock retaining wall is acting as a retaining wall or simply a decorative one, moisture is not its friend. If your region has had a lot of snow this past winter, check your landscaping walls for damage such as cracks in mortar, shifted stones or crumbling bricks. Repairing cracked mortar is easy as long as the bricks or stones it secures remain in good position. Just use a hammer and chisel to carefully remove the cracked mortar to a little more than half the depth of the stone or brick, taking care not to damage the bricks. Then fill the gap with new mortar. To replace cracked bricks in ornamental walls, remove the damaged brick and the mortar around it, then remortar and replace with a new brick A few simple repairs will help ensure your home’s hardscape is in good shape, and ready for whatever summer weather brings.

monthly. By switching to either digital phone service or going wireless only, customers are cutting their home landline phone bills in half or eliminating them entirely. The savings desire goes well beyond the home phone service and extends to other services including electricity and water services where customers are purchasing devices that lower their consumption. One area where many consumers are not aware that they can save a substantial amount is on their security and fire alarm monitoring costs. Thanks to wireless home automation, in addition to saving money, some systems also allow homeowners to remotely access and control the alarm systems, door locks, thermostats, appliances and other devices. The trend is expected to continue as ABI Research shows home automation will increase to 20 million installed units by the year 2017. This saves money, time and improves efficiency, coveted attributes in a world where free time is getting harder and harder to find.
Home security in the palm of your hand
Did you know that more than 40 percent of U.S. homes have dropped their home landline phone service and gone completely wireless? This amazing statistic from the federal government’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) says a great deal about today’s modern world, one where people have more control over their homes than ever — in large part because of smart homes and smart phones. This smart technology also allows consumers to save money on services that they frequently use and have to pay for
As homes have become more valuable than ever, many homeowners are embracing wireless home options with both hands, while others are still holding onto their landline phones. Often, homeowners who retain their landline are doing this because, while many home technologies allow for wireless options, there is still one system that often may require a traditional landline — the home security system. Fortunately for many homeowners, there is a new option. As technology continues to develop in other areas, home security systems and accessories have gotten smarter as well, and the smart alarm system now complements the smart home. NextAlarm’s Broadband Adaptor allows consumers an economical and easy way to
Thanks to wireless home automation, in addition to saving money, some systems also allow homeowners to remotely access and control the alarm systems, door locks, thermostats, appliances and other devices. For many, this technology finally puts the promise of affordable home security right in the palm of their hands. In addition to eliminating the landline to reduce expenses, customers of NextAlarm can choose a “self-monitoring” option which allows them to also take total control over their security monitoring and reduce security system expenses even further. The “self-monitoring” option allows consumers to monitor their security system themselves, without the cost of monitoring by a central station operator. Consumers who choose this option have the ability to: view the system’s arming status, remotely arm or disarm (with certain compatible alarm systems), view event and alarm history, access service information, manage logins, and receive email and text notifications about alarm panel events - plenty of options for homeowners who expect the freedom that smart technology provides. According to ABI Research, home automation has grown by 1.5 million units over the last six years, and as technology continues to improve, that number is expected to grow. As smart homes get smarter, it’s good to know there are security systems that are getting smarter and delivering big savings at the same time. To learn more about NextAlarm’s Broadband Adaptor, visit www.NextAlarm.com or call NextAlarm at (866) 223-0017.

“cut the cord” from landline-based security systems and eliminate the associated expenses, which can total as much as $30 or more per month before taxes and fees. Using innovative technology and a broadband adaptor, NextAlarm intercepts the security system’s signal and routes it through the users’ broadband internet service, giving them control over their security systems from a smartphone. The NextAlarm system even provides an option for “attended monitoring” (by a UL certified central station) for monitoring and dispatching authorities upon receipt of a fire or burglar alarm event. This “attended monitoring” option may even allow homeowners to achieve a discount on their homeowner’s insurance policies.

Grilling for a Good Cause Cookbook raises money for wounded veterans Honey Dijon Grilled Chicken Recipe courtesy of Shawn Syphus 4 (6-oz) boneless skinless chicken breast halves 1/3 cup horseradish Dijon mustard (or regular Dijon mustard) 3 tablespoons honey 1 tablespoon parsley flakes Salt, to taste Preheat grill or grill pan on medium-high heat and spray with non-stick cooking spray or olive oil. Once pan is hot, reduce heat to just below medium. In small bowl, combine mustard, honey and parsley flakes. Set aside. Flatten chicken breasts to an even thickness by placing between two sheets of parchment paper and pounding with rolling pin or heavy bottomed It’s time to throw on that apron and head outside. Memorial Day is the biggest grilling holiday of the year, and you’ll want to show off your barbecue expertise for hungry friends and family.
Original, delicious recipes Just in time for the flavor-filled festivities, the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) is debuting a new cookbook, “Grilling
for Heroes,” to raise money for wounded veterans. The cookbook features a foreword and recipe from Food Network personality Sunny Anderson, an Air Force veteran and co-host of the Food Network show, “The Kitchen.” It also features a compilation of 50 original grilling recipes along with heartfelt stories of military servicemen and servicewomen as submitted by food bloggers and grill enthusiasts from across the country.
With hundreds of submissions collected from a recipe contest held last year, Anderson handpicked her favorite recipe and story of military service. The winner is Shawn Syphus, a food blogger and creator of celebrated blog I Wash...You Dry. “I’ve had several members of my family join the armed forces. My uncle was one of the first to serve in the war in Iraq, and sadly lost his life there. I will never forget him or the courage he had to fight for our
pan. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Place chicken on grill for 3 minutes, then flip over and brush chicken with sauce. Grill an additional 2-3 minutes, then remove from grill and loosely cover with tin foil. Let rest for 5 minutes before enjoying. Serve with any additional sauce on side for dipping.
country,” said Syphus. “My heart and prayers go out to all those still fighting and defending our beautiful land.” One hundred percent of cookbook proceeds will go to Hope for the Warriors, a nonprofit whose programs enhance the quality of life for post-9/11 wounded service members and their families. Visit GrillingForHeroes.com to donate and download the cookbook, and for PERC’s tips for safe grilling all season long.

Jones While Jones is a common name, the Jones (407-01) is far from being a common type home. It has a southwestern look with its tile roof and stucco and brick exterior. It is unique in that there is an inner courtyard surrounded by a covered patio. Masses of windows provide light and an air of openness to this large 4,256 square foot home. A wrought iron gate secures the entry to the Jones. Double doors open into an entry with a great room on the left and the dining room on the right. This entire area has a two-story vault with arched windows along the roofline. The kitchen is situated between the dining area and the master bedroom. It is U-shaped with an island eating bar in the center. A garden window over the sink provides an area to grown herbs and spices. The master bedroom has a gas fireplace in the corner of the elongated room. There are double doors opening into a walk-through closet and bath area. A built-in spa for private use in the master bedroom is one of the many extras of this spacious home. There is a half bath between the master bedroom and the library. Again, the library is narrow but extremely long with a gas fireplace in the corner. French doors open off the library onto the courtyard patio. Next door, the utility room opens directly off the patio, adjacent to the garage. It has a sink and a built-in ironing board. The garage is large enough to have a shop on one side for the do-it-yourselfer. Upstairs are three bedrooms and two baths. One bedroom is large enough to be used as a guest suite with a large walk-in closet and a raised tub. The other two bedrooms share a common bathroom. One bedroom has a wall closet while the other larger bedroom has a walk-in closet.
