stirred up activity. Homeowners also must decide if it is bearable living with the insects. If insects are not doing any damage or if they can be controlled relatively easily, then you might be able to avoid calling in the professionals. However, if critters like termites and certain species of wood-eating insects are invasive and damaging your yard, you may need to take action. Anyone concerned with the side effects of pesticides and insecticides can first try to remedy the problem naturally. Sometimes it’s just a matter of making a yard less hospitable to insects. Remove leaves and clean up debris close to the house, as these can both encourage infestations. Piles of rotting wood or leftover firewood can be a food or shelter source for a number of insects. Inspect water spigots for leaks and improve suspect drainage on your property, as these things can be welcoming to bugs that like moist surroundings. Remove standing water whenever possible to eliminate spots for mosquitoes to incubate larvae. Natural remedies also may do the trick. Mint, bay leaves, catnip, and garlic can repel insects like roaches and ants. Citrus can be a natural flea deterrent. Some homeowners have had success planting marigolds around their yards to serve as a natural bug repellent because the flowers produce a scent that many insects find repulsive. Thai lemon grass plants also can be used to keep mosquitoes at bay.

out that homeowners cannot count on bitterly cold winters to help control the numbers of insects in their yards. Insect ecology is affected by various factors and is not solely dependent on temperature. Furthermore, what occurred one year certainly may not be repeated the next, as homeowners who have had various insect infestations in their yards can attest. One year a yard may be overcome with ants, while the next year it may suffer through an earwig infestation.

Homeowners know that the arrival of warm weather marks the re-emergence of insects. While not every insect is harmful, if an infestation grows considerably or if insects

begin to move from the outdoors into a home, it may be time for homeowners to call in a professional. The Entomological Society of America points

The first step homeowners looking to curtail insects in their yards can take is to determine if the insects they see are genuine threats to their lawns. Some bugs emerge and swarm early in the season, but then gradually disappear as spring turns into summer. Other insects may come out of hiding if a homeowner is doing a lot of yard work or construction around a house. Practice a wait-and-see approach to determine if you really have an insect problem or just have

Remember, natural predators, such as birds, bats, spiders, and larger insects, feed on nuisance bugs. Keeping these helpful predators around may be an effective and natural way for homeowners to control annoying pests. If an insect problem seems out of control or if you need a professional opinion about the damage being done to your home or landscape, consult with an exterminator. Licensed exterminators have the training and expertise to assess insect concerns and create a plan of action that will minimize the risk to inhabitants of your home and nearby wildlife. An exterminator will know what it takes to treat insects and maximize the chances of removing the problem promptly and effectively. Warm weather is synonymous with many things, including the return of insects. Homeowners may be able to treat unruly bugs on their own, but especially problematic infestations may require the help of experienced exterminators. GT154060 Source: Metro Creative Connection

KAEMPFERI (336-050) Living Space: 1,717 SF

Kaempferi A large workshop, separate from the garage, is included in the floor plan of the Kaempferi (336-050), a compact single-level home with a country style front porch. Economical to build, this home is well suited to the needs of first-time homebuyers, singles, or empty nesters. And it can be adapted for wheelchair accessibility. Family living areas are at the front, bedrooms at the back. The vaulted ceiling gives a sense of spaciousness to the living room. A five-sided bay window brightens the living room and creates an interesting recess for plants, a specially designed couch, a couple of easy chairs - the possibilities are endless. The living room also has a door that opens onto a small deck. Most homes this size have two bathrooms, but this one has three. The one next to the garage comes in handy for clean-up when clothes and shoes are grubby from working in the shop or garden. A work island, with a built-in range and oven, augments counter space in the kitchen. Other features include a large walk-in pantry, broom closet, and builtin dishwasher. Sink and dishwasher are nestled into a bay window that faces the street. Some families might prefer to outfit the adjacent space as a family room, rather than a dining room. Luxury touches in the master suite include a huge walk-in closet, oversized shower and twin basins in the dressing area. A glass door opening off the main suite area provides access to the deck. The utility room has cabinets and a long counter for folding clothes. It can be entered from the back yard, as well as from the interior hallway. Although not included in the plan, another deck could be built behind the home. A skylight brightens the main bathroom and a large linen closet is across the hail, next to the coat closet by the entry.

Remote controlled, programmable skylights bring not only daylight and fresh air into the home but provide privacy as well. Enjoy natural light and passive ventilation even when wall window coverings or doors are closed. Solar powered fresh air skylights and blinds, along with installation costs, are eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit.

Look good or feel good? 5 home improvements that let you do both

Who remembers that old Saturday Night Live bit in which Billy Crystal, posing as Lorenzo Lamas, quips that “It’s better to look good than to feel good”? Home improvement can sometimes shake out that way. Some upgrades that look great don’t do a lot for a homeowner’s emotional or physical health. Others, however, can help your home look good and make its inhabitants feel great. As you’re planning your spring and summer home projects, consider these five improvements that mean you don’t have to choose between looking good and feeling good.

1. Add more natural light. The health benefits of natural light are well documented, from improving our bodies’ ability to produce vitamin D to helping boost mood and fight seasonal affective disorder. Natural light also enhances virtually any decor, while helping reduce

Finally, don’t overlook the mood-boosting effects of looking at a lush, beautiful landscape. Multiple studies have shown that being surrounded by plants — or even just looking at a picture of a beautiful landscape — can help relieve stress and improve mental states.

3. Repaint with eco-friendly paints. Painting is one of the easiest, most cost-effective ways to make a room look good. But some types of paints can release fumes such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air, and such fumes have been linked to both short-term and long-term respiratory problems.

Programmable remote control units allow you to operate solar powered skylights and blinds, even when you’re not at home. Schedule lighting and ventilation periods without worrying about the weather due to automatic sensors that close the units in case of rain. Solar powered fresh air skylights and blinds, along with installation dependence on artificial light and lowering electricity bills. Adding a skylight is one of the most impactful, cost-effective ways to increase natural light in virtually any room, even those without direct roof access. Energy Star qualified, solar-powered, fresh-air skylights, like those from Velux America, allow homeowners to reap the health and functional benefits of enhanced natural light and fresh air. Boost the energy efficiency and aesthetic appeal of no-leak venting skylights further by adding solar-powered blinds in

designer colors and patterns. Solar powered skylights and blinds are operated by a programmable remote control. Both products, plus the installation costs, are eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit for energy-efficient home improvements. Visit www.veluxusa.com to learn more.

2. Improve your landscaping. Of course beautiful landscaping makes your home look great, but it can also improve your

health in a number of ways. First, if you do your own yard work, you reap the benefit of outdoor exercise, which can help improve cardiovascular and muscle health. What’s more, plants remove carbon dioxide and particulates from the air, acting as natural purifiers — so your lovely trees and flowers can also help improve your outdoor air quality. If you’re concerned about allergies, choose plants known for producing little or no airborne spores or pollens. Fortuitously, the plants that are the prettiest in

To make your room look good and improve how you feel, choose VOC-free paint types. Some manufacturers offer durable interior paints in designer colors that emit no VOCs and give off little or no odor throughout the painting process. You can even find eco-friendly paints that are made from natural ingredients such as plants and minerals. The truly eco-conscious will breathe easier knowing the paint they’ve chosen looks good and that it’s not harmful to their families or environment.

4. Improve ventilation. An EPA study showed that indoor air quality can be worse than the air outside your home. Poor air quality has been linked to a host of health issues, from respiratory problems to eye irritation, headaches and even depression. Improving the ventilation in your home can

help everyone who lives there feel better — and you can do it with style. Venting skylights are a great way to passively, costeffectively improve indoor air quality, plus privacy, especially in baths. You can also enhance ventilation and air movement through the use of ceiling fans and exhaust fans. Both types of ventilation enhancers are available in a variety of designs and styles to match virtually any decor.

5. Renovate your kitchen or bathroom. And the top home improvement that’s good for your home’s beauty, your health and happiness, and home value? Renovating an outdated kitchen or bathroom. The two rooms consistently score highest in terms of return on investment in Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs. Value report. It’s widely known that great kitchens and bathrooms sell houses, too — which can be a major stress-reliever if you’ll be putting your home on the market this spring or summer. But updated kitchens and baths can be good for your health in a number of other ways. High-tech enhancements like touchless faucets and germ-resistant surfaces on Countertops and appliances can help thwart the spread of illness-causing germs. Replacing old, deteriorating cabinets and flooring can help reduce mold, mildew and airborne irritants. Adding a water-filtration system at the sink or in a new refrigerator can help improve the taste and healthfulness of drinking water. Additionally, replacing traditional drywall with moisture-resistant gypsum panels can inhibit the growth of mold and mildew.

your landscaping - those that produce big, showy blossoms — also produce the least amount of pollen, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
